First win since I got back! Not terribly impressive, but I'd like it chronichled anyway :)
Carried the thermies for a long time in the hopes of getting the special ending, but no invulnerability was spawned on Phobos Hell lvl 9

Hi everybody! I guess most of you don't know me, since I've been away for a while but i just tried the latest version of DoomRL and upon seeing my name still in special thanks list i knew i had to return.

First of all I would like to apologize to Kornel and the rest of you who were here at the beginning for my sudden absence, personal stuff and all that, yeah it's all good now, how have you all been?

Second, wow Kornel, you just kept improving DoomRL! It is much better than i remembered, and seems to be harder, but that could be because i am a bit rusty. I've been playing non stop for about 4 hours now, finally got a char to hell but lack of healing opportunities and a Revenant that kept getting revived by an Arch-vile somewhere put an end to my run. I don't remember encountering one of those on the version i used to play (Revenants that is, I remember the introduction of Arch-viles).

I like the expansion of items, and the traits seem to be much better balanced than they were. I was also somewhat pleasantly surprised to see that you can't just get enemies to go to a spot by just dropping some item (I guess that got the name giftdropping?) unless they want it. I could go on and on I guess, but for now I'm going to familiarize myself with the game again.

Finally a melee run where i had lots of luck. Started of with easily reachable stairs down to chained court. hellish caves were easy by then. And on level 10 there were invulnerability globes, which allowed me to own a few hell knights and cacodemons with my chainsaw :)

Finally when i got to level 11 i noticed i could never make it past a group of hell knights and cacodemons guarding the stairs down, so i nuked the level.

Yes, i finally made it to JC after a whole day of savescumming (so sue me :P)
I used a save at the start of Hell (saved at the stairs at level 15) and quit the game when i didn't see any invulnerability globes near the stairs to Phobos Arena.

I got JC down to wounded, then used a phase device to get away from the BoHs he kept summoning. The game crashed at that point, and this dump is from the retry.

I had power cells and plasma rifles aplenty, but didn't find a special level with a BFG :(

Bug Reports / Bug - Doors [FIXED]

on win98se, doomrl win version with sound and all the bells.

It is possible to close an open door when an item lies in the doorway. The item will remain where it is, on (in?) the now closed door.

I always assumed this was impossible.

Requests For Features / Sokoban level

How's about a special sokoban type level? no enemies, just 1 big room with a few walls and lots of barrels to push out of the way to clear a path to the stairs (and maybe a few nice items).

the catch is offcourse that if you push the barrels the wrong way, you get stuck and will have to blow them up to get to the stairs.. probably killing yourself.

Discussion / Difference in colors

I noticed that some people see different colors in the game than others. For example, i see rockets as red |'s, but somebody on the wiki mentioned they are yellow. Same goes for the imp.

Can this be due to different OS's?

I've been testing the rapid pistol and rapid chaingun (didn't find any other types yet).

The rapid pistol seems to shoot in exactly the same amount of turns as the normal pistol (10 turns).
The rapid chaingun doubles the amount of turns needed for shooting! (20 turns)

This isn't exactly the behaviour i was expecting, so i suspect this is a bug. Or is it a feature? ;-P

but i'm gonna post it anyway:

what kind of beverage do you drink while enjoying a game of DoomRL?

i personally like to drink coffee (right after dinner) or cola (later in the evening).
But in the weekends it's usually beer. I'm always amazed by how much alchohol influences a roguelike game. I mean, it has nothing to do with reaction time, allthough it has got something to do with how easily you notice  enemies :)

edit: If you are below drinking age under the law of your country, do not drink beer or any other alcoholic beverage.. it damages your braincells and causes a lot of diseases. wait till you are of legal age so you can choose in what way you want to destroy your body like an adult ;)

Discussion / Suggestions to make melee more usefull

I lost count of the amount of melee games i've played now.. probably close to 50. One thing i've noticed is the very low hit ratio you have when using your fists or a knife (haven't gotten to the chainsaw this way yet :S). Even when you use aggressive tactics, you'll miss around 50%, where you'd miss only around 20% with weapons like the pistol and the chaingun.
So if the to hit on melee combat is increased you'll be able to kill enemies faster that way.

Another thing that i think will work well is cutting the amount of turns it costs to do a melee attack in half, for both the player and the enemies. This will make melee enemies a slightly bigger threat, but not that much. It will allow you to get into a fistfight with a former human without that imp shooting a fireball at you every single hit you land (or miss).

Stunning with the chainsaw was suggested elsewhere, but i'd like to add stunning with your fists too, except at a much lower probability than chainsaw stunning.

I know that part of the charm of DoomRL is its accent on missile weapons, but i seriously dislike the fact that melee combat is just equal to suicide right now, and i'd hate to see melee disappearing.


edit: maybe adding a new trait would help too:
boxing: +2 to hit and +2 dodge when using melee

Bug Reports / Bug - Combat Shotgun [FIXED]

When trying to pump a new shell in the chamber of a combat shotgun without any shotgun shells in your inventory, you get the message:
You have no more ammo for the combat shotgun!

this forces you to move to shoot again (9 or 10 turns), instead of using the fast pumping (2 turns)
