For no particular reason, I decided to try this game again, and see if I could get my "light weapons" skill up to master level.  The grind to get there was kind of ridiculous;  I was already ready to face the Queen long before I reached expert level, let alone master level.  (Even though I was playing as the marine, who has lowered cost of upgrading light weapon skill)  I didn't upgrade anything else, because I was saving up all my skill points for that one skill, and then took out the Queen as soon as I reached my goal.

I've complained about weapon skills needing a buff for a while, but I have to admit that once I reached master level, there was a noticeable improvement in my weapons' abilities.  I just wish the game was long enough to reasonably allow someone to advance that far.  Something for a future update, maybe.  :)

Are there any roguelikes that you are not supernaturally good at?

*Shrug,* I don't know about "supernaturally" good;  I just generally take my time and consider each move as I go along, while observing any patterns that may help me.  It seems to serve me well.  (Also, there were lots of deaths on the way to figuring out what strategies work best)  :P  So I dunno...  I'll play any roguelike that offers a challenge, really.

How much real-time did this run take?

Hmm...  I'm not sure.  A few sessions, I guess?  This is the kind of thing where I easily lose track of time.  :P

I tried AliensRL years ago and bounced off it, I suppose I was waiting for it to come out of BETA.

Yeah, version 0.8.4 has some nice additions, like the ability to carry primary weapons in the heavy slot, and the sentry bots in the Military Tower, but the fact that the tech abilities are broken is unfortunate.  I hope someone fixes it someday.

Someone randomly brought up AliensRL the other day, and it made me feel like playing this again.  :)  I haven't played the game at all since 2019, and apparently, I haven't played this version since 2015.  (I guess I really like the technician features of the previous version;  :P  seriously, if someone picks up development of this game, I hope they fix the things that broke during the last update)

Anyway, I decided to play as the Scout, for no particular reason, with the intention to lean into his strengths with the sidearm...  though in the long run, I ended up relying on my primary weapons anyway, and never fully upgraded my sidearm skill.  I didn't really notice a difference with my sidearm between "unskilled" and "expert."  I still think those weapon skills either need a buff, or need to be made less expensive;  there was no way I was going to grind all the way up to "master" skill level, when I was already ready to win the game by that point.

Nice catch. Stuff like that is why I was really grateful for my alpha testers back when I was working on my roguelike - they would manage to discover things I hadn't even thought about planning for.

It does look like there's some extra room to the left there, and maybe the whole thing could be shifted trivially - but I would imagine having that much ammo is an edge case, and it might be better handled that way as laptop recommends; that is, sanitize the output so that it's always 3 characters or less.

Either one is equally viable as a solution IMO, so it probably comes down to which is simpler to implement.

That closing parenthesis overflowed into the next line when the ammo hits 4 digits.  I'm proposing that any ammo count that exceeds 3 digits should have their significant figures reduced, so something like using "(1k+)" or something until the number of digits drop to less than 3 again.

Maybe Trar didn't employ advanced tactics of smacking stuff down with heavier weapons before finishing with fists to get the achievement, and so skipped out on the heavy-duty chainsaw?

Sure, but I'm not suggesting using the chainsaw;  that level contains the equivalent of five berserk packs, and with the increased powerup duration of ITYTD, those can last you all the way to the Cyberdemon.  I mean...  you don't have to use them, but it sure is a lot of fun.  :)

I think I did my Iron Fist run in the true spirit of the badge, with no alternates(and no chance of accidentally tanking the run, either!)
