Title: PSA: You can move diagonally
Post by: thelaptop on September 22, 2014, 16:21
Another PSA.  Despite how the tiles and ASCII art looks, DoomGuy can actually move diagonally and squeeze through those itty-bitty corner spaces of walls.  I mean that is possible to go from ##.

using diagonal movements.  Best part is that you don't even need to drop any of DoomGuy's gear to do so, unlike say NetHack.

PSA?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
And well, Nethack isn't exactly the roguelike you should refer to when you want fun gameplay. (It's a funny game, but the gameplay isn't all that fun.)

So it is indeed a Good Thing that DoomRLGuy (who is much wussier than Doomguy unless we count OP items) can squeeze through walls.

(I'm sooo going to smack you for that arduous list of acronyms. >.< )

The reason for pointing out Nethack is in case people actually "play" that, or at least have heard of that.

For the record, I have played a fair bit of Nethack and am very familiar with the experience of throwing my bag through tiny cracks so I'll be small enough to squeeze through myself.  (I'd rather just use the pick-axe to make the hole wider, though)

Never really got into Nethack, and the only other Roguelikes I play are Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (which is trivial to complete if you're sufficiently determined), POWDER (which doesn't allow the player to move diagonally unless you do something odd like become a Grid Bug), and Spelunky (which is a sidescroller anyway)

Plus I play on a laptop without a numpad, and don't use diagonal movement unless I have to do so to get to the stairs, so I never rebind 'em either. This sort of PSA is always appreciated ^^

It strikes me as kind of odd that this PSA would be necessary in the first place, because diagonal movement is an important staple of gameplay!  If you look at my videos, you'll find that I go diagonally all the time.

So is using the shift key to type capital letters...

...you'd be surprised.  Maybe.  Not everyone is a DoomRL veteran here.

Okay, point taken, maybe I'm being a dick by saying that diagonal movement is obvious, but I still can't imagine playing the game without it.

Couldn't live without it either. Still cost me a couple of dozen games to figure it out though..

It's rather a tile bug than a gameplay bug.
Just iphonise those edges :) if Apple allows you to use rounded square since they've patented it lol
Simply draw part of floor texture there.

Same here. When I first discovered roguelikes (ADOM 0.8.3 in 2002, IIRC), the discovery of numpad support and diagonal movement increased my interest and skills in RLs considerably.

When I first played castle of the winds I didn't know about diagonal movement. I got phase door as my first spell. Dungeon level 1 was SLOW

I'm going to Necro this because Castle of the Winds was amazing. I now wish to play it again.

On topic... people didn't know you could move diagonally? How did they play? The described CotW experience seems to me as though it'd have parallels in almost any roguelike ever...
