Title: Workers
Post by: Drox on April 10, 2007, 09:39
I'm not really familiar with the source material on the level that you all seem to be, so I was wondering if someone might answer a quick question for me.

Is there a canonical reason why workers behave the way they do? It is really creepy to open a door, run in to grab some ammo, and have 2 or 3 workers sitting in their own corners just watching me. Especially in small rooms.

Actually, I think that comment in itself could be fine justification for their existence.  Granted, none of the Alien movies I've seen had anything like this in it (almost all the aliens were either seen and shot at or not seen and wandering around trying to kill people), and I've not played Alien Breed, but atmosphere is one thing this game wouldn't be the same without and anything that adds to it is gold by me.

I'm not familiar with the canon myself, but it's pretty clear that the workers aren't watching you at all.

With one glaringly obvious exception, they have sight radius 2; as long as you don't hit them and stay beyond their sight range, you won't exist for them.

And, until XP for killing aliens is finally purged, they have the absolute worst shots/XP ratio for obvious reasons.  I don't mind taking one out as collateral damage from a krak grenade, but other than that it's usually better to outrun them than to kill them even if they do notice you.

I was thinking the same thing :p

Creeping you out made them worth it ;D

About their existence:
Workers ignore the player because it's not their job to fight intruders. Instead, they "do stuff". It shows that the Queen is in charge and that the whole thing turned into a full fledged hive. The basic idea behind it comes from ants/bees/borg.

That makes sense. I was just wondering if this was the case. I was reminded of Borg, as well. Those episodes where they board a cube always creep me out.

Except, the Federation only had their silly-looking phaser rifles. No smartguns. :)
