Discussion / Re: Call for Uniques/Exotics
« on: August 21, 2016, 09:31 »
I have one, if I can be so daring.

A game that is at least somewhat similar in genre to Doom (action-oriented survival horror), we have the signature mechanic from F.E.A.R.  Time slowing.

For the sake of working in DoomRL, it would best exist as either a unique item that you use which lasts for X amount of time (10 seconds?  I don't know, it's just a number that can be adjusted); I don't think Kornel wants to dare add a new mod to the game, with the complications of needing to work it into assemblies.  How it could work is simple:

In keeping with the theme of time slow down, it will not make your weapons fire any better, or make you move faster.  Instead your reflexes would increase, which offers you but exactly one benefit, the ability to react.  Thus, while it is active, you gain all standard benefits of dodging enemy fire (exempting arch-viles and revenants, due to the way their shots work).  You can see it all coming from all directions, you're going to be just that good.  In other words, you would have your dodge chance for everything, even while holding still, including Dodgemaster if you've got it.  The absolute best time to use it is at the start of a floor when you're surrounded.  No phase device?  No problem.  Pop this bad boy, and you'll be able to chain fire while dodging it all.  The idea behind it is that it won't last very long at all, but when you need it, it's gonna rock.

Bwahaha!  Kornel, I didn't even realize you put that in there!  That's simply amazing.  It reminds me of that one time I started an AoH, started in a room with six lost souls, and...well...before I even got my first turn I was under 48%, so long story short, I didn't get any kills.  Nice touch on that one too.

Here's the run in a nutshell:

Super shotgun, medical armor, then phaseshift boots one after another.  Considering I was building Army of the Dead anyway, you could imagine my maniacal laugh (seriously, nerf super shotgun my god).  So, in-between my clear sense of invinciblity, I was plowing through everything, going as far as to two-hit Barons.  So after I clear the arach cave without ever bothering to use a teleport (or anything aside from my super shotty), I'm clearing the place out, ho hum diddily dum...oh, cool, nuke.  I could use that later!  The second I saw the red text of the counter beginning, I damn-near crapped myself.  I looked around for about half-a-second before I concluded: Yeah, I'm not getting out of this one.  Ah well, the perfect run is lost, but a hilarious mortem is gained.

I hate using the nuke for a suicide-win.  If I had an invulnerability globe, I'd be all over it, but I wanted to go big on this one, even if it nearly caused me to fail in two different ways (and what a rush it was!)

Goal: Complete the HNTR+ in under 25 minutes badge.  I didn't have the under 30 minutes badge, so that was also in the plan.

Background: I'm no newbie, I felt confident...so confident I made many stupid deaths in previous attempts.  Well like all the others, this one was filled with promise.  Additionally, I'm always looking to discover those assemblies (on my own of course), so I went whizkid build, and just threw mods on my stuff every chance I could.

What happened: Two assault shotguns?  YEAH!  It was useful in my speedrunning.  I almost always took the stairs down immediately when I could, which even included mortuary.  In that case, I used two phases andgot to the corner, where I got that thar nuclear BFG.

Cybie: This is where the run was interesting.  I had about five large meds, and limited rockets...and to top it off, I could feel it, the timer was ticking down on me.  I started out with rockets, and got a rhythm down.  Naturally I didn't evade pain every time, I didn't hit every time, and I made many stupid mistakes, but I got my hits in.  Next I fired that nuclear BFG, then got behind a pillar.  The 3x3 pillar was between me and Cybie, and he was doing that thing where he sits on the other side, so I paced back and forth to charge the BFG, then gave him another shot.  I was down to my last hit (as you see there), and it came down to blind shooting with my main assault shotty.  The relief when I saw his explosion was great.  The timer sitting at just below a minute to expiration filled me with that sense of accomplishment.  Not one of the harder badges, but a unique one that I finally earned.

I'm more interested in that tactical equipment.  It must do something quite amazing for you to use it even in the Mortuary with 1/1 each.

Learning from my missed Nightmare full win, I got the trigun very early in this run.  My eyes widened...a lot.  Any time I get an invuln globe, I could clear a stage for free.  And if the positioning is right, maybe two...or THREE!  Well I didn't take this route, I took the classy route and didn't abuse it (I kinda wished the mortem would count Trigun nuking as saying you nuked a stage in the history).  I even found a nuke, but didn't care.  I don't care all that much for Trigun as a weapon, but as infinite nukes?  Yes please.  I eventually got bored abusing my assault shotty, and upon finding an invulnerability globe on Hell 8, I nuked the next two stages.  I was hoping for a chance to redeem myself by nuking the arena, and beyond...but my invulnerability wore off before the end of Hell 9.  Now, as usual, I want to try and kill Cybie normally, but I was lazy and didn't abuse Dodgemaster.  SO...I nuked him.  Only just became a Major, but Lt. Colonel seemed so appealing.

On level 19 he found the Nano Pack!
On level 20 he found the Trigun!
On level 23 he entered the Lava Pits.
He decided it was too hot there.
Then at last he found Phobos Arena!
On level 25 he finally sacrificed himself to kill the Cyberdemon.

Before him 485 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 429 of those were killed.
2 of those were killed by something unknown.
9 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 29 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 16 souls claim to have killed him...
1 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
12 killed the bastard and survived.
3 showed that it can outsmart hell itself.

First time I completed Nightmare...I was stubborn (Game Hunter can vouch for this), as I only beat UV once before this, on standard.  My main motivation was that I hate doing challenges like AoSg or AoMr, and not getting to enjoy all the cool gadgets I will inevitably find.  Well in this run, I got more than a person and a half's worth of cool stuff.

Highlights:

-This run started out strong, as I was getting berserk packs early and strong.  I even cleared out a floor once.  Per Game Hunter's recommendation, I realyl tried to kill things, even after finding the stairs.
-Supercharge going into Chained Court, so I got in, got my berserking, and got out.
-Found the sniper pack.  This was before I found the Beretta, so I threw it on a plasma rifle.  This was a risky move, as I lacked cells, and I knew they wouldn't come easy later either.  Still, the few times I plan to use the plasma rifle, I must (MUST) be ready to utterly annihilate what is in front of me.
-Why yes, I found the beretta.  Unfortunately, it was mildly useless the entire run.  Ah well.
-The Halls of Carnage was MUCH easier than I could have ever imagined (yes, this was my first time in it).
-I got MFa right before Hellgate, my ultimate goal.  I was a fool and didn't take a berserk pack when I could on level 14...but RNG took pity and threw one at me elsewhere on the floor...by the stairs.
-As you might have guessed, my first Hellgate was this run.  I lacked cells hardcore, even as I bulk modded my BFG.  Well still, I was berserk, and decked out in healing (among other things).  I cleared out most of the nightmare baddies, and as my berserk ran low, I got to the safe room on the left.  The nightmare creeps were just so fierce, so I restocked, and left the room to face the last couple nightmare cacos and imps to find...nothing?  Well they were further right, and through some fancy footwork, I got them to kill each-other, and dodged my way right by.  The bruisers were ready to kill, but I didn't feel like playing, so I ran right on through.
-I found a blaster a little later.  Kinda useless, but a nice feather in my cap.  I never once equipped it.
-Found a Megasphere...don't care who you are, you smile when you pick one up.
-The enemies were really fierce all-around.  At one point I "convinced" a commando into killing a baron.  Mmm, it felt good.
-Nano pack!  Yes yes yes!  I'll throw it on my BFG...oh wait, bulk mod.  Okay, then on my plasma...oh, sniper pack.  Well, I gave myself permanent red armor instead.
-At about level 20, I started to question if I should REALLY still be using my combat shotgun.
-I then saw the Trigun in a hall, between two hell knights in a city level.  My instant thought was; "Freebie against Cybie?  Yes pl0x."  When I got it, I was extremely relieved.
-The rest of the run was really, REALLY easy.  I was literally running around, immune to revenants, arch-viles, mancubi, and pretty much everything under the sun that I once feared (ironic, as I never used to fear plasma enemies, but they are the biggest problem when you have MFa.)  I can't imagine ever attempting this without MFa, as I ate a muiltitude of flames and homing rockets.
-I had invulnerability when I got to the Phobos Arena.  My first thought was; "Sweet, Trigun and..." then I immediately stopped myself, I almost did a horrible, HORRIBLE thing (note: The first time I discovered YOU KNOW WHAT, was in an AoMr run where I threw the nuke down.  I failed to get it counted as a win as a result).  So, I run up to Cybie (invulnerable AND berserk), and waddya know, he spawned OBSCENELY close to me, by a pillar.  So I pull out my plasma rifle, unload into him at point blank and...the sniper pack isn't working.  I was so upset, I felt robbed, utterly robbed.  Four whole magazines of plasma later, he isn't even half-dead it seems.  Okay, so I pull out my combat shotgun (yes, this felt like a stupid decision at the time too), and I start blasting away.  Naturally I ignored my rockets, in an effort to abandon all common sense.  My invulnerability and berserk wore off, I ate up like three full med kits, and I knew I wasn't going to win like this.  Instead of being logical and abusing my dodgemaster and MFa as I should, I threw down the Trigun.  Fuck the Cyberdemon, even if I'm stupid, I will STILL win.

Mmm, dare I say you can call me a Major?  I guess now I can relax, and go back to clean up UV a little.

Doing JC as an AoSg is insane by any standards if you don't have a spare nuke handy.  I can't help but think without that Super Shotty, you wouldn't have stood a chance.  Well done though, seriously.

Requoted for hilarity:

Fire -- Choose target...   The missile hits the Cyberdemon. The Cyberdemon
FUCKING KILLS YOU. You and your friends are dead. GAME OVER.

A reference to Friday The 13th for NES (also seen on Angry Video Game Nerd) I presume?

Preparing for both the Cyberdemon and the last levels is a combination hard to stomach.  Remember, in most cases, shotties and the BFG are not good Cybie weapons (the shotties are bad because the SoaB has great accuracy, and putting yourself up close is begging to get knocked back to hell...unless your back is to a wall, but you're still going to take ungodly punishment.  The BFG is poor because the cell/damage ratio is horrid.  Yes, the damage/time ratio is amazing, so by all means blast away if you have a whole TON of cells.)

Any plasma rifle of sorts is number one against Cybie every time.  And true to the FPS-variant, rockets are efficient, and get the point across.

Remember, as you go further into the depths, power-ups and true goodies become more common, so don't be afraid of clearing out the final floor before him, as a convenient invulnerability globe can turn the odds in the opposite direction.

Five minute AoPc runs?  This is just sick.  Granted it has to be the easiest run to race through, it's still bizarre.

I still insist AoLT is one of the harder challenges, despite all of the requirements knocking it up a difficulty level.  Despite my own bad experiences with AoMr, I think that one would give you more luck.
