Former civilian:

"The weakest of the weak. Generally unarmoured, unarmed, and soft-hitting, but will pick up and use any basic gear. Problem is, there's bound to be a lot of these bastards in the base. And you only have so much ammo."

The general workforce of the UAC base, only introduced when Doom 3 hit the shelves. These guys don't really need much more of a description, but should have a lower hit rate, due to civies having atrocious shooting abilities.

I was going to suggest civilians as well, but they seemed rather too boring an addition given how weak former humans already are, so I refrained from it...

Wouldn't be better to call "champion" monsters "nightmare" monsters, since that's what the uprated imp was called in Doom 64 and what the uprated caco and spectre were called in Doom 64 TC (which admittedly was a mod rather than an official game)?

Anyway, as long as Kornel's thinking about formers for a new DoomRL, here is another rough concept that I think would help to "fill out" the various types of people one might have expected to find on Phobos base before it was attacked...

Former medic:

"The bad new is this guy hasn't lost his extensive knowledge of medicine, meaning he can heal and, with some effort, even revive his fallen comrades. The good news is... well... other than that he's no tougher than any other former, there is no good news..."

Essentially, the former medic would be a lesser arch-vile and would either have the ability to heal nearby zombies and other bad guys, revive them from the dead if he is standing on an adjacant tile (meaning he can raise the dead, but not as effectively as a vile can), or both...

The funny thing is that whatever forum I end up on, I end up being a significant presence, whether for better or for worse.

That's because your ego takes up so much room that it's impossible for people to not notice it... :P

While I ended up ultimately banned from Smogon for HAVING AN OPINION, I went out in a blaze of glory and encouraged free thinking.

I imagine you were actually banned because your ego causes you to rudely and forcefully impose your opinions on others... Oh and last I checked, the definition of "free thinking" didn't include insulting people just because they disagree with you... :P

Dios mio. Okay. Aki doesn't have tact. Bottom line. Let's get used to the fact that he is going to spout stupid things instead of useful things a good portion of the time. He DOES have some good thoughts. He will often tell you that your thoughts suck. This is your opportunity to improve on them, and prove him wrong. Because chances are high that he is wrong.

Tavana, consider yourself quoted for truth... :)

And Aki's certainly not the only one, as I said, 'nor is he the worst, but his biggest problem is that he's always complaining which, funnily enough, is exactly what the other three members of my "chronic self-importance" section did, to varying degrees...

But, to get back on topic, has there been any discussion regarding possible implementation of the "nightmare imp" enemy from Doom 64? This enemy might seem somewhat redundant, but even with the newly weakened cacodemons in the most reason version, there still seems to be a fairly wide gulf between imps and cacodemons, a gulf I don't really think demons and former captains adequately fill... I don't know wether this would adequately reflect the n.mare imp's relative strength from Doom 64, never having played that version of the game, but throw a few nightmare imps with a strength between that of the imp and the caco into DoomRL and you could potentially have a smoother transition from weaker enemies (imps and formers) to stronger "mid-range" ones (knights and cacos)...

EDIT: Voted for option B by the way... The only rule I think we need is one for plagiarism, with the "Doomishness" thing being more along the lines of a helpful suggestion unless you want your idea to be ignored (I consider "Doomishness" to be at best a flimsy and extremely subjective concept that, in large part, only serves to divide and distract the ones doing the brainstorming such that they end up wasting time arguing over wether or not, say, a flamethrower, is sufficiently "Doomish" or not instead of coming up with new ideas or improvements to old ones, such as how to make that same flamethrower workable within DoomRL)...

Alright, here's my monster idea again...

Quote
Former engineer:

This combat engineer's inventive mind sadly wasn't enough to save him from the demonic hordes... His brain (or what's left of it) now works for them...

Essentially, this former would manifest himself as a green or yellow "h" who would start off with no weapons at all other than punching and perhaps the same Glock the former security officer would use, but would be able to pick up and use any weapon he can lay his hands on (including uniques), meaning that the player could, conceivably, find himself staring down the barrel of a nuclear BFG wielded by a former engineer... This would, however, necessitate the player being able to tell what weapon the engineer is carrying and would also necessitate some method by which the engineer could chose which of his carried weapons he'd like to use, all of which is perhaps too complex to be implemented effectively...

Oh and Aki, you really need to get over yourself... The very nature of ideas is that most of them aren't good (or are good, but impractical) and the ones that are good tend to start out in a rough, unrefined state that needs to be improved upon before it can be implemented and used, just like how James Watt was able to improve the Newcomen steam engine in such a way that it became a hundred times more viable for mass use than Newcomen's original design was... For this reason, all ideas are valid as what might seem like a bad idea at first can easily become a good idea if one is willing to modify it. Indeed, often those modifications don't even need to be all that extensive. Going back to the steam engine example, Watt's modification to the Newcomen design was actually a very simple one and yet it was a vast improvement...

OK, how about this for an idea, Aki? Instead of moping about how horrible all of our ideas are, why don't you instead suggest ways that they can be improved so that they stop being horrible ideas? You know, like how I suggested that the sec. off's shield should be only 50% effective against plasma and explosions so as to avoid them being too effective against higher-end weapons? And don't try to hide behind "Doomishness" arguments against improving a monster idea, because even if the idea isn't particularly "Doomish" (who the Hell is meant to judge constitutes "Doomish" is, anyway?) and has little chance of being implemented into the main game, I see no reason why the concept can't still be improved upon in terms of balance and ease of addition into the game (perhaps for a mod if the idea is inappropriate for the main game)...

1) A monster like this would probably be in conflict with the rest of the game's content. DoomRL is quite an abstract game (for example, we have a trait that literally gives you ammo out of air). Security officer, on the other hand, is a detailed monster - adding him would break the level of abstraction the rest of the content operates on. Incidentally, I didn't like the inclusion of Pancor Jackhammer into the game as well, for the same reason.

So... what... you'd be OK with the Jackhammer if only Kornel were to change its name to "automatic shotgun" and remove all references to the Pancor Corporation, I take it? Seriously, that's a pretty dumb notion...

Former commando is the single enemy from DoomRL that doesn't exist in Doom(1 or 2).

What about the Angel of Death in the unholy cathederal?

While indeed there were former commandos in the original Dooms, we knew them as the lovable blokes with bullets for our chainguns. Now they murder us with plasma rifles. And thats not too far?

(vague agreeing with Melon's statement :P)

For my money, new monsters are fine as long as they fit in with the existing cast and don't actually replace or cause the removal of an existing monster and indeed, what was the commando (or "heavy weapon dude" if you prefer) in the original game simply became the former captain, while the commando became an HWD with a plasma rifle, something I have no problem with... And why shouldn't there be a few elite formers who are able to play with the big boys? Maybe there should be a former rocket trooper as well...

Anyway, I very much like both the "Shotstol" (though it desperately needs a better name (though the best I can come up with for the moment sadly is sawn-off shotgun)) and the former security officer ideas, though I think plasma and explosive type weapons should be able to "lance through" the shield, causing the SO to take half-damage since, well, let's face it, a former security officer being completely immune to a BFG shot or rocket explosion (the concusive force alone of a high explosive round is considerable) because of a little portable piece of metal seems a little hard to swallow...

Going back to the rocket trooper concept though, that actually gives me a different idea...

Former engineer:

This combat engineer's inventive mind sadly wasn't enough to save him from the demonic hordes... His brain (or what's left of it) now works for them...

Essentially, this former would manifest himself as a green or yellow "h" who would start off with no weapons at all other than punching and perhaps the same Glock the former security officer would use, but would be able to pick up and use any weapon he can lay his hands on (including uniques), meaning that the player could, concievably, find himself staring down the barrel of a nuclear BFG wielded by a former engineer... This would, however, necessitate the player being able to tell what weapon the engineer is carrying and would also necessitate some method by which the engineer could chose which of his carried weapons he'd like to use, all of which is perhaps too complex to be implimented effectively...

Lets just say the Scavenger badges weren't won by entering the Vaults ;P.

Actually, they were... The aurora medallion is the one you get for finding lots of uniques (four or more I think) during a non-Ao100 game...

Strange though, you would think that since savanger bronze is for entering the vaults, savanger silver is for "scavanging" the vaults (breaking open some of the vaults but not all three maybe?) and scavanger gold is for clearing it, that nuking the vaults (and thus clearing them of bad guys) would net you the gold... and yet it didn't... Funny that...

*An ammochain build can be somewhat difficult to set-up in the early-going, but once I got the trait and an agility moded plasma rifle it was pretty much smooth sailing from there on out... I'm really starting to think that ammochain may be somewhat overpowered...

**One from Halls of Carnage, one from City of Skulls, advanced one from Mortuary and a nuclear one on level 22 I discarded as superfluous... That shout you just heard was the Doomguy from the comic having an orgasm... :)

***Even with the new-found fragility of armour (the angelic armour was toast almost as soon as I put it on), this one suit of heavily-modded red armour managed to last me almost throughout the game, thanks in no small part to the two megaspheres I found along the way...

****Lost souls (mostly spawned by pain elementals) up the ass this time around... I also see the "problem" of there always being more barons than knights hasn't been fixed. The glut of aracnotrons is due to several caves...

*****Just when I was starting to wonder if I wouldn't see a single unique on this run, bang! Five uniques spawn in seven levels (six in eight if you count the mortuary and the angelic armour found within). Unfortuneately, not a single one proved useful. I experimentally wasted the nanopack on red armour that only had a bulk mod, didn't want to risk wearing the unremovable cybernetic armour (though you can see I put it on during my battle with cybie), didn't need the necroarmour as my power/bulk/agility modded red armour was giving the same protection without the health drain, didn't have a use for the jackal of nuclear BFG and the angelic armour was taken down to about 30% almost as soon as I put it on...

*6 With ammochain, three levels of SoB, two levels of triggerhappy, power and bulk modded red armour and a plasma rifle with agility and technical mods, the mortuary was almost laughably easily... All I had to do was blow away any enemy that dared approach (at point-blank range I was able to take down aranotrons in one volley (two at long range) and barons and viles in two (three at long range) and revenants in one at all times) and wait for the viles to wander into range...

Overall, it was an absolutely fantastic run and, as I said, I really couldn't have asked for better... I wonder if this is RNG's way of wishing me luck on the first of my exams tommorow...

Congrats on the win, but what exactly is "highly overrated"? Your post wasn't entirely clear on the matter :)

He probably felt that the difficulty of the challenge mode was overated, that is, that it had been exaggerated by people who had played in previously, in which case I would advise him to play it on a higher difficulty and see how he does then...

I got both the Aurora Medal and one called Gambler's Shield on this AoSH game... Four uniques here as well, making me think that Aurora Medal is indeed for getting four or more uniques (in which case it would make sense for Ao100 players to be exempt from getting the medal, unless you can only get it if you find exactly four uniques and no more)... The death in lava pits with three enviropacks in my inventory is due to stupidass operator error on my part, making this mortem the very epitome of "Yet Another Stupid Death"...

I wish that DoomRL, once you have cleared a level, would reveal all the terrain you have seen as if you had gotten a computer globe. Not reveal stuff you haven't seen, but just show what you had already seen so you do not have to wander around the level again to make sure you didn't forget something you wanted to pickup later.

So, no, I do not consider it cheating. I think it should be a feature. :)

This'd work... :)

Ok:

I've got a minigun on an Ao100 Ammochain run :D

However, it's 1d5*8. This is compared to the Plasma Rifle's 1d7*6, which also halves armour.

Keep or drop?

Drop... definitely... The minigun and that plasma rifle of yours will actually have about the same average damage per volley (3, the average roll on a d5, x 8 = 24 damage per volley if every shot hits for the minigun and 4, the average roll on a d7, x 6 = 24 damage per volley if every shot hits) and this coupled with the rifle's lowering of enermy armour and the fact that the rifle fires faster makes the plasma rifle the superior ammochain weapon...
