Also, loads one shell into your doble shotgun
Woah - that's new. I wonder what's the purpose of that xP
I've used that to shoot barrels with a double shotgun, using one shell instead of two.

 4 of those were killed.

Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 1 souls claim to have killed him...
1 showed that it can outsmart hell itself.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Trait order was: TaN 3 -> Eagle Eye 2 -> Intuition 3 -> SoaB 2 -> Ironman 1.
TaN helped a lot in my survival, and you know how Intuition 3 is just awesome. I just had one BFG, but lots of plasma rifles, and I didn't have lots of ammo, so I decided to go for SoaB. Later, I almost died in an arachnotron-ridden hellish cave, so I picked one point in Ironman, although I wasn't really hit after that.

I found the stairs to the Unholy Cathedral on lvl16, but I didn't have proper equipment (and I decided I wouldn't enter it anyway).
I found the stairs to the Mortuary on lvl22, but I didn't have too much ammo, and the rewards weren't worth the risk, being that close to the end.

To kill the Cybie, I tried firing that plasma rifle until I heard him scream (so that I hada clean line of vision to him), then I used 6 plasma rifles (which I had previously overcharged, to save time). I expected him to be dead at this point (6 overcharged rifles*20 shots=120 plasma shots, which are ID8+2 each, minus his armor), but he wasn't, so I got the BFG, and the first shot finished him off.

The worst moment happened on level 13 (I had Intuition 2 then) (I've changed the barrels to "o" here, so as not to confuse them with Cacodemons):

That's 2 Viles, 2 Barons, and 2 Cacodemons. I think I only saw the Vile on the left, so I fired a rocket at him, and when I reloaded, some shot from an enemy exploded some barrels, making the enemies on the left visible, and the Vile from the north appeared and raised the Baron on the south. The good thing is that I was standing on the stairs to the Wall, so I was about to flee, but I don't like leaving monsters alive. :-) Well, the Vile on the left was "Wounded", so I thought I'd try to kill him at least, and flee to the Wall when things were just too bad (I didn't think about the possibility of being knocked back away from the stairs, but TaN prevents that rather well). I fired a rocket at him, but killed nobody. Then, I switched to the BFG (good thing I got it in the Halls of Carnage), and fired two shots to the Vile on the left, which killed all the west monsters, and left the north Vile and the south Baron mortally wounded. Then, I switched to the plasma rifle, and finished the Vile and the Baron.

This is a screenshot after all of this:

Gah, died with 2 FairyDusts. I was trying to get the most out of my Berserking, but a beast critical-hit me and killed me.

I was mostly running around the level, which may not be the best idea against hunters, but I found it more fun. :-) I liked the game Kornel, it's great fun (and although I don't post too often in the forums, I'm really interested in the next version of DoomRL).

I found an important bug, though: the berserk bar charges (or uncharges, if it's active) for every action you do, even if it takes no time: for example, starting to fire but cancelling the action, or hitting the run key. I didn't take advantage of the bug in my game, 'cause it was obviously a bug, and I wanted to see how far I could go in normal conditions. :-) But this basically allows you to turn on/off berserk mode if under 50% health whenever you wish, by holding down the run key.

Requests For Features / Iffy idea, but, what the hell
« on: January 13, 2006, 19:34 »
Here's how mancubuses in Doom 2 work:

Mancubuses don't have flamethrowers, but something that would be better described as "fireball launchers". That's an inherent attack - they didn't drop anything when they died (like barons of hell).

They have fire modes A and B, and they always do A-A-B-A when they shoot, while standing still.

If @ is a player, M is the mancubus, X are the fireballs (which don't have splash damage, by the way) and dots are nothing, fire mode A looks like this:

.....X...........................
..................................
@..X.........................M
..................................
.....X...........................

And B looks like this:

..................................
.....X...........................
@.............................M
.....X...........................
..................................

(note that you won't get hit if you stand still here, and you aren't too close to the mancubus - but the two fireballs are closer to you in B that in A)

Er, this looks better if you imagine the fireballs moving from the mancubus to where they are, in a straight line. :-P

I don't know how this would adapt to DoomRL - probably, mancubus should just shoot at you in mode A. The two outer fireballs could hurt other monsters, or explode barrels (or hit you if you're in melee range, which would REALLY hurt).

Pre-0.9.9 / My first YAPV - no BFG, late rocket launcher
« on: December 11, 2005, 19:55 »
Quoting: Kornel Kisielewicz
You should be able to destroy locked doors with a shotgun.

I tried to break or destroy them with my double-shotgun, but it didn't work (and I spent quite some ammo, as I had the level full of shotgun shells anyway). I've destroyed doors with the shotgun (or have them destroyed by a sergeant), so either closed doors can't be destroyed with shotguns, or just the locked ones can't.

Somethings rotten in the state of Denmark...

Yeah, but I didn't know about that then. :-)

Quoting: Kornel Kisielewicz
That's probably the worst that can happen to you on Phobos Arena.

That was really scary, I though it would be the end. Fortunately, I did dodge his next shot, so the explosion moved me away from that wall.

Requests For Features / Help needed - Levers
« on: December 11, 2005, 19:42 »
A possible way to fix monster-spawning levers would be only make them work once (and maybe make them spawn 2 enemies, so they're a bit more scary :-) ).

Following this idea, positive levers could spawn (only once) an item (or two) near you. You could have several types of these levers: one that spawns ammo, one that spawns medkits... maybe have one (not too common) that spawns a special weapon? (I mean advanced/fastload/whatever)

Requests For Features / Proposed Feature - Machinery
« on: December 10, 2005, 04:54 »
I should note that in Doom and Doom 2, there was no sliding walls, or rotating walls: things only moved up and down. But that could be confusing in DoomRL, as the view is from the top.

-- General ---------------------------------------------------

Before him 10 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 9 of those were killed.
And 1 couldn't handle the stress and commited a stupid suicide.

--------------------------------------------------------------

This is my first victory, on the 11th game! :-) I didn't make it very far in my first 9 games (level 4 or 5 max.). On the 10th one, I got to level 15, where I was blasted by some arachnotrons really quickly when my armor got broken, as I hadn't picked any level at Tough as nails - this was why I maxed Tough as nails in this game.

Regarding this game, it was a strange one... I couldn't find a rocket launcher until level 15 (and I try not to explode any barrels unless I know there are no items in their radius), so I couldn't kill anyone in the Wall (but I did clean that level on the other game), and I couldn't go pass the locked doors at the Halls of Carnage, which meant no BGF for me in the whole game. In fact, I found a plasma rifle before the rocket launcher. Also, I didn't find any phase devices at all.

I just killed 399 out of 428 hellspawn, because of the closed areas at the Wall and the Halls of Carnage. I did clear any other level, though.

On a side note, I didn't pull any levers at all, because in my last game, one of the levers that I pulled filled the WHOLE level with acid, so pulling levers before the level is clear seems like a bad idea to me, and when the level is clear, the only "useful" lever would be the monster-spawning one, to get some Exp.

Regarding my traits: I got Cateye 2 (a cheater is me! ;-) ), then got Tough as nails 3, and then took Son of a bitch 1 - but then I noticed how much shots I missed with the plasma rifle, so I got Eagle Eye 1. I would have picked Son of a bitch 2, if I had leveled again, but I barely got to level 7.

I got to the final level with the weapons you see, and another 4 plasma rifles (I used to carry several of them so I didn't need to reload them, which was useful when several monsters were around, especially when entering a new level). I also had 4 large med-packs, 2 perfect red armors (one worn), and 100% health.

I had noticed you could overcharge plasma rifles, but hadn't actually tried it, so I decided to overcharge one at the start of the last level, and shoot it at the Cyberdemon to check what happened, because my lack of BFGs scared me. And that probably saved me - I destroyed 4 of my rifles this way, and then switched to my rocket launcher (because I didn't want to overcharge my last rifle, and just shooting it without overcharging first didn't look like a good idea), and after some rockets the beast fell. Well, maybe it sounds easy this way, because I skipped the part about getting blasted by rockets from him, and even getting myself thrown to the north wall, so the Cyberdemon didn't even need to aim at me then. :-P

Great game Kornel! I've had a lot of fun playing it - maybe I can find that secret level the next time, but the Cyberdemon didn't felt like cooperating. :-) (on a side note, the Cyberdemon is misspelled as Cyberdeamon in a few places - such as when you defeat it, and in the end-game text)
