Pre-0.9.9 / Re: [E|90%] YAFVP
« on: April 09, 2007, 13:16 »
I actually used a defensive build here with 3 IM, 3 TaN and 1 EE for accuracy with my rocket launcher. My sequence was TaN-TaN-TaN-IM-EE-IM-IM-RL-RL. SInce I ended up with two more points at the end that I didn't need, I just dumped them in Reloader once I got to that part (It seemed the most useful since all my weapons at that pointt required frequent reloading)

I'll try running a shottyman game in the future though, it sounds like it could be fun. Any tips on what other traits to take for that build once I have the 2 RL and 3 SM?

If you want a web scoreboard, you'll also want tools to examine the replays. All replays would also have to be run through your own copy of DoomRL or through someone else you trust. It basically boils down to whether you want to run a whole Compet-N for the DoomRL or not.

Even then you'd have to create a seperate game mode in which you can't save or else people could savescum. :-/

Oh, cool.

I'm still fairly new to DoomRL but I'll probably donate eventually. Can you donate by mail or just by PayPal?

Update: It happened a few more times. It appears to only happen with "Stupid suicide" deaths.

My first win! Yeah I know, Easy isn't very impressive but I'm still happy with it.

This was a really close one, I ran out of Power Cells after 3 BFG blasts and had to use my Double Shotgun. I was one turn away from dying, but it all worked out in the end.

I made a lot of stupid mistakes this game, not the least of which was using the resources needed to clear the Mortuary and then forgetting to pick up the Angelic Armor. >_< Hopefully I'll be less careless on my future games, especially since I plan to do medium.

Also, I have a spoilery question.

Pre-0.9.9 / Re: [E|23|92%] My best run so far...any tips?
« on: April 08, 2007, 12:40 »
Thanks for the feedback! I just had my first win on Easy difficulty, I'll probably upload that mortem soon. For that I actually skipped plasma rifles altogether in favor of a double shotgun and used the cells to power my BFGs. That seemed the work pretty well. Although defensive skill sets worked well for me in Easy, I'll probably have to go on the offensive with Medium and I'll definitely keep your trait tips in mind. My biggest problem was that I got assaulted rediculous sets ofl monsters on l22 and l23 and had to convert my ammo over to the BFG which sucked. I got more reasonable levels on my successful attempt which allowed me save my power cells for the Cyberdemon.

Thanks again for taking the time to type out such in in-depth reply!

Someone in another topic said that for newer players defensive skills were the best chance for survival. This seems to be true, as previously I had always taken offensive skill sets and had never made it past level 12. My skill sequence was IM-IM-IM-TaN-EE-TaN-TaN-HR. I took the level of Eagle Eye because I was at The Wall when I hit level 5 and was getting frustrated with only getting like 70% accuracy with my rocket launcher. The EE worked wonders for me, and I have no doubt that it led to much conservation of ammo and earlier taking out of enemies in the later levels. The Hellrunner didn't seem to make a very big difference, I'd probably choose a different skill in the future.

Level 22 and 23 were fucking intense. On level 22, I entered the level into swarm of 10 Arachnotrons and burnt 3 large medkits moving 7 spaces to the Mortuary stairs. If the stairs hadn't been right there I would have been wasted almost immediatly. On level 23 I was met with a group of 4 archviles that shredded my angelic armor in like 4 turns. I fought valiently and dumped the remainder of my power cells into the BFG to try and take them out, but it was to no avail. Are there any tips on surviving these two situations in the future?

In comparison, the Mortuary was a cakewalk-two rounds from my BFG, mopped up quickly with the rocket launcher, and collected the loot.

A few other notes- I encounted the famed Pain Elemental melee attack- it did about 30% damage with red armor on at char level 6. The reason I had so many plasma rifles was that I was planning on overclocking them and wasting the cyberdemon. As it was I ended up unloading them and using the ammo in the BFG. I wandering into the unholy Cathedral, but upon realizing guns didn't work I quickly wandered back out. I didn't encounter any enemies.

I didn't notice it aside from the power cells while ingame (I had arch-viles to be worrying about) but  looking at the post-mortem I was just about out of every reasource possible. Are there any good tips on conserving resources in the future?

Thanks in advance for taking the time to look at this and help me out! ^_^

Requests For Features / Re: New Traits
« on: April 06, 2007, 10:06 »
I really like Hellwalker and Fireball, I think they'd work well. :-)

With Hellwalker, I think it would be better to make it a one-level skill that completely eliminates acid/lava damage. Otherwise no one would bother using it, but with the fairly negigable effects of acid and lava on gameplay this wouldn't be overpowered.

For Fireball, I love the effect but I would rather have it changed to "demolition specialist" and available from the start. That way, the issue of giving you character superpowers wouldn't have to be raised.

My own ideas for traits:

Custom weaponry - Requires 2 reloader.
Your superiors told you not to modify your weapons. Look where that got everyone else. For each level of this trait, your clip size on most weapons increases. In addition, the number of bullets fired per round with Chaingun and Plasma Rifle increases by one per level.

(For actual clip size increases, I would say per level 1 for pistols, 5 for chainguns, 5 for plasma rifles, and 10 for the BFG)

Man of the Blade- Basic Trait.
You are trained in the art of bladed combat. You live by the blade, and now your enemies will die by it. For each level of this trait, damage from combat knives increase by 20%. In addition, at level one knives have an increased chance of causing bleeding, knives can be dual wielded at level 2, and at level 3 knives stack and can be thrown short distances (About the range of a shotgun)

I think this would be a fun trait, especially since it would allow for an actual malicious knives challenge to be added (As was being discussed previously.)

Bug Reports / High score dissapearing?
« on: April 06, 2007, 08:30 »
I just had the second place game on my highscore list seemingly randomly dissapear! :-O It cost me a rank, although I was on Easy so it wasn't hard to get back. I can see this being a problem if someone lost their N! win though. Anyone else have this problem?

146
I recently got a level with 2 berserker packs, 4 large health globes, 3 superglobes, 2 invincibility globes...and three monsters. It made me sad to see such a rediculous amount of powerups wasted, although starting the next level with 200% health and invincibility was nice.
