DiabloRL / Re: DiabloRL ported to Valkyrie 0.4.1 - testers needed

Money doesn't work, indicator in talk with Pipin shows 0 gold, and I can't buy anything, even though I have >100 gold.

Berserk! / Re: Ideas and Suggestions For the Next Version of Berserk!

(thought about creating a separate topic called "Time in BerserkRL", but decided against it for now)
Having died (no big surpise) once again in BerserkRL I had the following idea: translate turn count into real time count. There's something more touching in "X have survived through 4 hours 32 minutes 15 seconds of hell and killed whopping bunch of 971 ugly creatures" than in a boring "...19942 turns...".
This brings us to several different points. First, of all, "turn" seems like a generally little amount of time, and most probably all of us will agree that striking someone with a sword or making a step barely takes more than one-two seconds. And this means that if and when "Day Count" is implemented, we should either limit "The Night" to 10-20 minutes, or take a liberty of declaring it actually takes *minutes* for hero to swing his tool.
Here come other things I've been thinking of. First of all, I don't know how Kornel is planning to organize "train und restock" system in Day Count\Campaign. Mundane "XP\Gold" system doesn't feel right for Berserk. So I've though that maybe it could work, if the only valuable resource would be time. That's right - in between of battles hero has 6-8 hours, which he can spend to produce bolts, brew dust, train himself or treat his wounds (maybe HP should automatically restore to ~50% each day, or maybe fully, that's worth special consideration). We could even reward hero for quick and efficient disposing of enemies, which can be done in a following way: after fight time (5-10 minutes, maybe +1 each day) is over, monsters spawn no more (and fight is not over until there's only one), and the quicker the level is cleaned, the more time player will get to spend (so it would be unworth to run from enemies all the time). Of course that's not very logical since the difference would be 1-2 minutes, and how the hell does that give or take free hours? This can be explained by hero being on the edge and overstraining himself, so the longer is combat, the more he actually takes to recover (not in Energy\HP sense, which are "short-runned" but in some long-termed way).
Any comments on that?

Requests For Features / Composite Look

Mmmm... will it look alike with Akalabeth? (That one wasn't ASCII, but featured simplistic line-based graphics, which I suppose are easily recreated used ASCII).

I also learned a lot by reading the 'Core Java' books 1 and 2Hmmm... I'll search for those.

I guess the only way is getting into a project, and take it to personal levels.Maybe this summer third try will make a charm :).

I program in Java for a living, have been using it since about 3 years and it is my language of choice for almost everything, including standalone, mobile and web applications. How did you learn it? I tried studying it armed with "Thinking in Java" and failed...

so are all those 4 rougelikes?Strictly saying, none of them is :). MooRL stands for "Master of Orion RL", while it's actually a mix of MOO, Elite and BattleCruiser ;). RL stands for ASCII and style here.
"MercRL" is squad-based tactical RPG-strategy (think Warlords Battlecry 3 mixed with Final Fantasy Tactics). This one is closer to roguelike :).
"The Prince" is a medieval family sim (similar to strategical part of Rome: Total War, and maybe Crusader Kings).
I wonder, if you had seen the first MyADoM ;))). The second one will be bigger, prettier (in ASCII way) and generally more fun. And yeah, sourcecode won't be AS bad (you can generally use sc of first one as an example of the way you should never, never ever, not under any circumstances, write ANYTHING ;)) ).
Today I have a free day... Good time to get some hacking done ;).

I am FreePascal fanboy ;). I'm afraid that Kornel had a bad influence on me, hence the strong passion towards impossible projects and vapourware-look-alikes.
I've lost count to unfinished, unstarted and untouched projects I had - maybe up to hundred (yep, I'm serious. There was ASCII scroll-shooter, tetris, Lain-inspired cyberquest, few IF's, LOTS of rpgs, strategies, simulators... "all dead, all dead"). I'm awful at finishing stuff, and I am ashamed to admit I have maybe three or four finished games, all of them are very, very simple, and none of which are really interesting :).
Current projects: "MooRL", "MercRL", "The Prince" and rlRL which is in fact "MyADoM II" :).
I have my school-farewell exams this year, so my time is rather limited lately :(. Still I hope third and fourth projects will be finished soon... First and second ones are more long-termed and vapour-flavoured, I'm afraid...

Requests For Features / Silly but maybe fun idea
« on: February 27, 2006, 15:24 »
miniBB doesn't seem to support topic splitting feature... All I can do is to move entire topic into "Discussion" section and rename it to something like "Survival shooters", which isn't exactly what is needed, since there is some potentially useful information for development of DoomRL, which has it's right to reside in "Requests for features". I wonder if I should simply copy-paste everything non-DRL into a new topic, with manual separation by posters... that looks like a crude solution, but I can't think of anything else.
