Discussion / Re: What are the most common abuses of DoomRL?
« on: September 08, 2010, 08:10 »
I do not consider gift dropping to be an exploit anymore. When Barons would go out of their way to pick up worthless items like pistols then it was an exploit. Now they can use everything they pickup.

And not allowing enemies to use armor and Medpacks would be lame. I like the occasional surprise of finding a hard to kill Former Human because it found some Red Armor. And although I hate it when a nearly dead Baron uses a Large Medpack, it adds challenge to the game.

I think the gift dropping is balanced by the benefit that the enemies get.

The biggest meta-game exploit IMO is the moving to the center of the map issue mentioned by Fanta Hege. It means if I know the layout of the map I almost always know where the enemies have ended up.

Along those same lines, knowing what doors have opened on the unseen portion of the map is also a huge help. It lets you know where the enemies are wandering and I believe that most advanced players (especially on Nightmare) are in the habit of closing doors behind them so they can see where enemies are moving.

IMO, Ammochain and Intuition are not abuses since they are "working as designed". Discussions of how they should or should not be nerfed are probably better in other threads so they do not clog up this one. I personally believe they are fine as-is because of their cost and the limitations on what traits are excluded.

I also do not consider shooting around corners to be an abuse or exploit. People do it all the time IRL. It is like shooting from cover. I just wish that the shotguns would be consistent in all directions as has been mentioned by others. If anything needs to be changed about it, you could drop the accuracy of the shot as though shooting beyond sight range. When to use this could be determined by calculating LOS both ways (shooter to target and target to shooter). If only one is clear then apply the "shooting from cover" or "shooting around a corner" penalty. There should be a warning of some kind to the shooter though. Ammo can be precious and I would hate to unload a volley from a Plasma Rifle at 50% (or less) accuracy without knowing it.

Requests For Features / Badge Suggestion
« on: August 07, 2010, 11:41 »
I really like the current badges. I suggest adding one additional badge per level though. The new badge would be "Earn all <previous> level badges".

We could call it the Collector Badge. So a new Diamond badge would be "Collector Diamond Badge - Earn all Platinum level badges" and a new Platinum level badge would be "Collector Platinum Badge - Earn all Gold level badges".

For Bronze we could just make a new regular badge like "Hellgate Bronze Badge - Reach level 15 on Hurt Me Plenty".

The rational behind this change would be to reward players for collecting all the badges of each level and to offer them an alternate way to gain higher level badges. Personally I think it would be much more difficult to earn all the previous level badges than one badge of a level higher, but it would be an option.

Bug Reports / Nightmare Mortuary and Angelic Armor
« on: August 06, 2010, 16:28 »
This is in version 0.9.9.1

In my recent Nightmare game I was determined to clear the mortuary. I used the Nuclear BFG to help me by gibbing corpses. Eventually I killed everything but could not find the Angelic Armor. Corpses continued to raise and I killed them all again but still could not find the armor. I repeated this maybe two more times.

After that every time I killed the last remaining enemy it always generated an Angelic Armor. I ended up grabbing 4 before I got bored and left the Mortuary.

Here is the relevant part of my mortem:
-- Equipment -------------------------------------------------

    [a] [ Armor      ]   Angelic Armor [7/7] (89%)
    [b] [ Weapon     ]   modified plasma rifle (1d8)x6 [40/40] (P1)

Modding / Cell Flag Question
« on: April 13, 2010, 09:05 »
Can someone explain to me what the cell flags CF_OVERLAY, CF_MULTISPRITE, and CF_STICKWALL mean? They seem to be used a lot in the mod examples, but what do they do exactly?

Forum / Locked posts
« on: December 09, 2009, 14:00 »
Just curious... What is with all the locked posts?

I remember in the good old days of the interweb it was only the flame war or troll posts which would get locked, but in some of the sub forums here every post older than about 1 or 2 weeks is locked. Is there a reason for that? Is there any danger in leaving those posts open for people to discover and comment on a couple weeks later?

No disrespect meant to the Mods, I am just curious about the reason. It seems to make the forum less friendly to newbies or people who visit infrequently.

Bug Reports / Stairs not generated in accessible location
« on: December 09, 2009, 11:31 »
Version 0.9.9. Level 28 of a Nightmare Ao100 run. The stairs were generated in the bottom right corner surrounded by walls. There was a computer map on the level or I would have never found them. Fortunately I found a rocket launcher on the level so I could continue, though I ended up dying on dlvl 74 to a stupid Arach Cave :(.

Discussion / Re: Berserk, DiabloRL or AliensRL?
« on: December 07, 2009, 09:28 »
Frankly, I think Berzerk is rather boring. Sure it is fun to play a couple times, but there is no replay value for me. AliensRL is relatively fun to me, but for long-term fun and replayability my vote is for DiabloRL.

All of you pansies who voted for something else because it is easier need to change your votes. :)

Kornel offered DiabloRL. I figured that he would not have if he did not think it is possible. It is also unfinished. What good would a remake of Berzerk or AliensRL do? We can already play both of those games?

Bug Reports / Re: Problem with AoMC and SoB?
« on: November 10, 2009, 23:19 »
I have run a few more N! AoMC games and in my last one I experienced the same problem. It seemed to happen after I applied the 2nd Power (Dmg) Mod to my Plasma Rifle.

So the gun basically started pushing things away much more than damaging them. Is it a possibility that knocking back the enemy causes it to take less damage? That may explain it.

9
There are only three conditions where I would ever consider pulling a lever.

1. I have Intuition
2. I am playing N! and I get the water message (maybe)
3. I am totally desperate, about to die, am standing on a lever, and have no other viable options (out of ammo, no armor, no health, etc)

IMO if you pull a lever without one of those conditions you are just asking for a YASD.

* Everything after Dodgemaster (WK->Jug->Rel->Rel->SM->) was wasted choices. I wanted to avoid getting AoBx3 and THx2 since last time that screwed up my game. I didn't want to risk it here. See http://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php/topic,2422.0.html
** The Vaults are really annoying to me. I went in with 20 rockets, so I blew my way into the two side rooms. I had 3 phase devices and my first PD just randomly jumped me to be next to the stairs. I hated to use my others up in case I needed them to escape an Arach cave swarm (Insta-death on AoMC with no TaN or Iro). I cleared 2 rooms, and still I get neither of the Vault badges?

Bug Reports / Problem with AoMC and SoB?
« on: November 04, 2009, 18:30 »
So I have been playing a few N! AoMC games with a focus on getting Ammochain. It seems to me that there may be a bug somewhere. Allow me to relate my most recent death...

In my last game, I had gotten pretty far. Here was my trait progression:
SoB->SoB->Fin->Fin->TH->WK->MAc->HR->HR->DM->SoB->TH->
Here was my main weapon:
modified plasma rifle (1d9)x6 [40/40] (P2)

Everything was going swimmingly until I got that 3rd level of SoB. Before that, I would kill almost anything in one shot from my trusty plasma rifle. After SoBx3 (and around the same time I added the second dmg mod to my gun), it seemed that I started missing all the time. It would take at least two volleys to take down Cacos and Hell Knights. Sometimes it would take 3 or 4. Now only rarely would I kill things with 1 volley.

Has anyone else noticed anything similar to this? I wish I did not have to get so far in the game to test it out. Also, without actually seeing the numbers it is hard to know for sure what is going on.

This is not the first time I have noticed things start to get funny with SoB, TH, and MAc. It is very obvious with AoMC though.

Kornel, do you have a way to setup a AoMC game and fudge the stats so you can see if there is something wrong?

The only other thing I can think of is if going to a special level (like Halls of Carnage) somehow made the game lose it's AoMC status, but that does not seem very likely at all.

0.9.9 / [H|AoI|100%|YAVP] Colonel Rank!
« on: November 04, 2009, 08:01 »
I just needed one more Gold badge to hit Colonel rank. I kept trying some of the others and had a difficult time, but AoI finally paid off. I must say that IMO AoI is way, way easier than AoP. Should AoI's difficulty be changed to Medium?

I found that mods are considered to be like med-packs in AoI (use on pick-up). Is that intended?

* I had to do something else for 3 hours and I wasn't at a place I could save so I left it running. :D
** My goal was to get Intuition so I could find globes easier and Int 2 so I could see the enemy. It worked out very well. Then I got SoB for damage boost, and TaN/Iro/Bad to help against Cybie since I would have no healing at that point.
*** Doing the wall was a big gamble since I had no way to heal and I started the level with only around 60% health. I was unlucky at first and was hit down to 35% killing off the first 3 barons and almost gave up on it. I stuck with it, though, and once I killed off the Arch Viles the rest was not too bad. Being able to carry all the extra ammo paid off so I could burn through ammo killing things off screen.

Bug Reports / Re: Score is abnormally low
« on: November 03, 2009, 11:36 »
This also has the annoying side-effect that AoPc wins have much much lower scores than AoPc losses. My AoPc win has a final score of 3685, and a loss where I died on L18 has a score of 22,498.

Perhaps deaths where you nuke yourself should be counted as health=0 for purposes of the final score?
