Title: Next Project?
Post by: Kornel Kisielewicz on November 21, 2006, 09:23
Okay, it seems it's time for the next DoomRL release. It will be called 0.9.8.5, because I want to make 1.0.0 final (with Derek's graphics) or at least "semi-final" (with further DoomRL development). That makes me wonder what to do after DoomRL 0.9.8.5 is out? There are plenty of ideas, and plenty of games to work on :).

I allow 2 votes per member -- please vote! The future of the games presented here is in your hands!

Also, please discuss!

Primary choice: DiabloRL 0.5 - I'm waiting for it since, well forever
Secondary choice: DoomRL 0.9.9 - 'nuff said

DoomRL 0.9.9 and your other crazy idea. It is finally time to implement it! dont chicken out!

I say get DoomRL out before you start anything else... it's so close to being finished!  It'll make you legendary with its release!  And yeah, I kinda want to see the graphical tile version, too (hehe).

But yeah, get it over with and then you can spend all your time on whatever you want. :)

I actually made this poll because I know that after DoomRL 0.9.8.5 I will need to take a breather with another project :). I fully understand that DoomRL is my trump card and that it has highest priority.

Ah, okay.  I understand that!  God, I totally understand...

I'm just super anxious to see the next release, of course.

My vote would be for Carceri (though I seem to be the only one), because I always thought the atmosphere\setting for that game sounded pretty cool. Plus it would be interesting to see a traditional-dungeon-crawl (though it sounded like it was more than that as well) kind-of roguelike from someone who has usually programs anything but :)

Also I'd really like to see the graphical version of DoomRL.

For that matter I'd really like to see GenRogue.

And bererk and diabloRl are pretty cool, and whatever your next crazy idea is , I bet that'd be cool too...so, um, basically do whatever you like :)
Title: Re: Next Project?
Post by: Kornel Kisielewicz on November 21, 2006, 17:57
Yeah, you tripped on my foot with that "traditional dungeon crawl" -- I always wanted to make one :D. Damn I have sooo many ideas ^_^.
Title: Re: Next Project?
Post by: Derek on November 21, 2006, 21:51
A traditional dungeon crawl by you would be sweet!

And yeah, just to save myself the energy of asking you the same question over and over again, I'm basically down to do tiles for any of your games that you'd like to have graphical versions for.  Just let me know, man!

Would be especially nice to work on something that didn't have to be based on another artist's work. :)

Nah, it's just my bad English, and some literal Polish saying translations :-P.

I have to agree... I'd much rather see you work on an original property, like your traditional dungeon crawl.  Diablo is already so close to being a roguelike, too, isn't it?
Title: Re: Next Project?
Post by: Kornel Kisielewicz on November 25, 2006, 04:08
I will have to wait for Malek to spank you for that heresy :D. And seriously tough, you've got a point.

As for "other projects" they are not limited to roguelikes. I may post a seperate poll on that. And even if I'd work on a "traditional dungeon crawl" it wouldn't be so traditional. Especialy in the cases of Magic... I might elaborate on that if anyone's interested...

P.S. Welcome Peetaa to the forums -- you've came at a good time, any day now DoomRL 0.9.8.5 will be released ;].

I am offcourse eager for you to continue work on DoomRL, it is one of the best roguelike game today imo.

But since you say you need to take a break, just go for whatever crazy idea you have :) I would love to see that game/engine you were working on with multiple heights on the same map though (was that GenRogue or Carceri?)

Title: Re: Next Project?
Post by: Kornel Kisielewicz on November 25, 2006, 11:06
The engine was Carceri, but it didn't have multiple heights. The one with the multiple heights was GenRogue :).
Title: Re: Next Project?
Post by: Fingerzam on November 25, 2006, 11:46
My suggestion is to polish Berserk. It probably won't take long, at least if you don't add a campaign mode to 0.8, and would therefore work as a nice breather.

Defying Malek and the followers of Diablo, I agree with Peeta... better work on something cooler than DiabloRL ;)

And yes, ellaborate on the Magic stuff ;)

@Turgor, dunno if you know but crl has multiple heights, just in case you want to look

Title: Re: Next Project?
Post by: Chris on November 25, 2006, 14:46
I'm definitly interested in hearing more about the magic stuff. And I never thought that it was going to be a "traditional dungeon crawl" in that it was a direct copy of ADOM or Crawl or Nethack or something. Rather my interest was in, given a traditional game format, what odd or unique twists you would give it. Also I'm interested in seeing the kind of setting\story\atmosphere you can create yourself (which is not to knock the games based on the story\setting\atmosphere from another source, because there all encredibly cool :) )

I'm new on this forum, so hello to everyone!

I voted for DiabloRL and Carceri... mainly because I like the ideas behind these RLs the most. Of course I would prefer DoomRL, but I think moving on to another project for a while may be better for DRL :)

Personally, I'd love to see GenRogue, because horror is one of my favorite genres, and it'd be interesting to see that in a RogueLike.

But whatever you choose to work on, it will kick ass. I'm sure of that!

I voted for DoomRL and Genrogue. However what you do does not matter much to me as it is what inspires you that makes a good game.

HERESY! BURN THE HERETIC!

Seriously, I prefer RL's to other games because they are interesting to play. When I want graphics I just play another kind of game. The thing with RLs is that the effort is concentrated on having a good experience while playing, not while looking at them. ;)

Well, as long as there's an ASCII mode... :>

I'm not against graphics as long as they don't get in the way. It's just that I prefer the game happening in my head rather than my screen... I can imagine situations better if there are not graphics that force an idea on how something is on my head. I think about RLs as reading an interactive book. Anyway, as long as the game is good (and if it's as good as DooMRL, it'll be great) it really doesn't matter.
Title: Re: Next Project?
Post by: Blade on December 05, 2006, 12:18
Maybe make graphics and ascii versions separately, only changing output style. And you can choose, what version to download. Hey, developers, what you need to change in engine to convert everything to graphics?
Title: Re: Next Project?
Post by: Santiago Zapata on December 05, 2006, 12:30
Well actually... I guess it all depends on if you planned to support both modes when you started the project, altough it is never too late...

Also, it is common for graphics and ascii version to be bundled together and switched via configuration (or ingame)

What the hell ever happened to Aliens RL???

Kornel said something in another post about watching the 12th of March.  Any significance Kornel?

My vote is for:
DoomRL 1.0.0
Aliens RL 1.0.0
Pimp RL 1.0.0 (Would be a very interesting Rogue-Like! Since it's only ASCII, then is won't need any porn images.  Player can fight off other pimps and gang members and recruit/work his girls on the street.  Later expansion into drug and gun dealing.....ok, I'll stop now.

Seriously, Doom 1.0.0 and Aliens RL!

(Graphics are cool as long as the gameplay is fun.  I'd rather have crappy graphics and fun play than great graphics and lousy play).

Title: Zombie Horror Survival!
Post by: Elohssa on March 28, 2007, 13:05
My dream rogue is a randomized urban survival against zombies with multiple STARTING points.  The zombie fighting angle is obvious, but the starting point thing goes like this:

Depending on what type of character you choose (with the attendant bonuses and penalties) your mission will vary.  For example, if you are an unarmed civilian, perhaps either holing up in a house and surviving the night, or making your way to a shelter would be the goal.  However, if you are, say, a police officer, or a national militia type, then your increased firepower would be matched with a more difficult objective, like clearing the area around a shelter, or escorting civilians to safe zones.  A middle ground would be perhaps a street hoodlum, with better weaponry and combat skills, but no initial shelter, say trying to rescue his family or girlfriend.

Within their limitations, these goals, and the associated maps, could be randomized.

The Key is that the intro map, the triggered quests, and the overall experience would be dependent on what role you choose.  The would multiply the replayability.

Seriously, there aren't any zombie roguelikes, except of some crappy mod of some bigger RL, and in my opinion zombies deserve a roguelike. Think about all those zombie geeks who would start worshipping the Creator of first ZombieRL! It it going to be considered? Please!

Heh, I can see that you like Zombies seeing as you brought this thread back to life and all that ;)

Seriously though, I've been looking for a zombie RL but haven't found any that looks all that good. But I guess it's hard to make an interesting ZRL? basically it's slow moving drone-like creatures that don't use weapons that have to be either avoided or shot down in huge numbers... ok I'm getting excited here :)

It'd be really cool to generate a new city every game, with gun shops and malls of course :), and then see how long you could survive. Maybe add a timer of some sort, like survive for 10.000 turns and then get to the helipad and get rescued. As the game starts out there's few zombies but the longer you survive the more of them pop up of course. I've actually entertained the idea of creating such a RL, I quickly ended that train of thought however, I have no programming skills :)

Saying that I agree with this is totally worth thread necromancy. That game is solid, you need to lay some shine on it.
