Play-By-Forum / Re: Dwarf Fortress succession fort?
« on: February 18, 2012, 17:58 »
Running worldgen now. History takes a lot longer to generate than it did in older versions, for sure. Any last minute opinions on embark, or suggestions for a fortress name?

I'd be interested, if there's still room.
Worldgen: Preferably a large world so we can get the perfect embark site. I'm very picky.
Embark Site:
Look for somewhere:
-Flat and cold, with as little vegetation as possible. (Tundras and deserts have historically run faster than sites where there's a lot going on with the wildlife. They also tend to lack Carp, Giant Eagles, and Unicorns)
-With at least three soil layers for most of it
-And no aquifers
-Except for in a second biome in the same site, so we have a water source
-Evil!
Embark Supplies:
-Lose the anvil, we can buy one later.
-Lose the axes, it's much cheaper to just bring a bunch of logs
-Bring extra food
-Bring extra booze
Embark Dorfs:
-If we have seven definitely interested, we can each design a dwarf.
-I would like to have at least two miners.
Tileset: We don't need to all use the same tileset.
Time Limit: As suggested - one year game/one week real per player.
Mods: No mods. (Utilities like Dwarf Therapist are okay, of course, but no world-gen mods)
I would be happy to take the worldgen and first year, and get our food industry up and running while we wait for Dwarf Therapist to update. Dwarf Therapist is awesome, but I only need it after the second year.

It gets us nowhere, but it keeps the thread alive:

Angel of Max Carnage makes Gatekeeper Diamond (and the harder difficulties in general) much easier. Shooting into the dark is much more likely to work, and enemies are much more likely to die before they get into a position to hit back.
The fact that they do maximum damage if they do hit you is dwarfed by the fact that you lose the badge if you're hit, no matter how little damage they'd do.

Malek's Armor is godsend for berserkers. 30% resistance to acid/fire/plasma. Resistance provides +60% resistance to everything and stacks additively, resulting in 90% resistance to everything except melee, unless you count formers, whose damage is low enough to be reduced to 1 by the combination of armor and zerking anyway.

The description of AoMC, "You hate chance, games of chance, you hate chance so much that you crush dice whenever you see them" describes me pretty well. I usually play on AoMC, to the point where my high scores only has three entries on the first page that aren't AoMC.
Second-favorite is a tie between all pistol traits that aren't Bullet Dance. I disagree about MSS. MSc is a better pistol trait if you don't mind using other weapons for the first half of the game. You get Intuition sooner, you get a nearly guaranteed Storm Bolter Pistol (with a nearly guaranteed Sniper Weapon Pack to slap on it), and it doesn't block SoB if you're playing Ao100 and want to do even more damage. Against the same enemy with 2 armor, with the same ammopack, my MSc-pistol build can put out (at level 16) 337 DPS assuming I roll nothing but 1's - or 487 DPS average. Getting numbers like that on an MSs build takes quite a few lucky drops.
It's mostly an Ao100 build, though; on any other mode, you won't have time to enjoy it, before frying the mastermind.

0.9.9.5 / [U|AoMC|YAFW|99.99%] I can do that too! (Gatekeeper Diamond)
« on: February 08, 2012, 08:52 »
I was holding off on posting another AoMC/UV mortem. My laptop which serves as my main gaming computer is out of commission, so I downloaded DoomRL on my desktop. Since I can't transfer progress from my desktop back to my laptop without overwriting my laptop's profile, I haven't been doing anything new on my desktop - just a lot of AoMC/UV and some AoMC/N! to practice.
Wouldn't'cha' know it, I get my first diamond badge here. Gatekeeper Diamond. Probably the easiest diamond badge right now.
There were no phase devices to be had on Phobos, but there was an invulnerability globe on Phobos 7. I grabbed it, skipped the wall, and made a mad dash through the ambush. To minimize the number of actions I took, I didn't loot the initial room, and rather than opening the door on either side of the ambush (which would have been two actions), I fired a volley from my plasma rifle and destroyed both doors in a single action. Turned out not to be necessary, I got to the other side of the ambush and cleared everything that remained in sight with a few actions to spare, then came back for cautious cleanup with Cateye.
Hoping for a Nano Pack, I went for Finesse instead of Hellrunner. It paid off, since the RNG and I have a special bond like that.
Without Hellrunner, I knew I wasn't going to get Gatekeeper Diamond if I ever let him get in sight of me, so I emptied both BFGs into him while he was still outside of vision, then backpeddled and finished him with the plasma rifle.
I am of the firm belief that in the current version, while there are many things that the Nano Pack can build, there is One Great Assembly that is so superior to all the others as to render them beneath consideration - doubly so when there's a guaranteed Nuclear Plasma Rifle in the easiest special level ever imagined. It wasn't until after the Vaults that I found the second agility pack I needed for it (having left behind agility packs in Phobos in favor of more medkits). Shortly afterward, I found another agility pack, and slapped it on for overkill.
I finished the game with a total movement speed of 0.07 seconds/move.

Century Lounge / [H|Ao100|99%|YAVP] An alternative technician pistol build
« on: January 30, 2012, 14:11 »
A thought occurred to me while planning out a technician pistol build: SoG5 is not a master trait, nor does it require MSs. Furthermore, any build with SoG5 in it is worth it for pistols. MSs blocks SoB, which leads to less average damage output (in the very long term) with most pistols.
With that in mind, I went for MSc, which had the added benefit of snagging Intuition much earlier. The beginning of the game played mostly with automatics, as I didn't start picking up SoG until after MSc.
Apart from Malek's Armor (which was awesome), I had basically 0 luck this game. I didn't get any unique/exotic pistols (and hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side) and none of my scavenged uniques turned into unique modpacks. It didn't matter, though, because MSc almost guarantees Firestorm and Sniper packs, which I used to make a wall-cutting laser pistol and a sickeningly damaging Storm Bolter.
The last level being full of formers was hilariously anticlimactic.

0.9.9.5 / [U|AoMC|YAAM] Angelic Badge / Gravity Boots should be illegal
« on: January 28, 2012, 04:01 »
Well, I said I'd do the Hell Fortress next time I did AoMC/UV, and I did. It just took a few tries. Amusingly, I found both of the awesome items as in my previous run (Railgun and Duelist armor) though on different floors. There was an acid spitter in the vaults, but I decided to leave it behind.
Highlight of the game was finding a Nano Pack in Hell's Armory, which I immediately used to assemble Gravity Boots. MY GOD THOSE THINGS ARE POWERFUL. 0.13 movement speed, until I traded out my duelist armor for angelic, which I only did because I thought the angelic armor looked prettier (also useful against JC, as I didn't have Dodgemaster).
Thanks to the Gravity Boots, I got the "Angelic Badge" medal: Completed the Mortuary without taking damage. I would have gotten one for the City of Skulls as well, if I didn't screw it up due to impatience. I also would have gotten Gatekeeper Diamond if my phase device didn't drop me in a bad position, at the anomaly.

Long time reader, first time poster. I can't play UV for carp normally, but I thought I'd try my luck at AoMC. Tactical Defense is a lot more effective when B's and V's die in one shot. I chose not to Invulneranuke the Mastermind because I didn't want to spoil my first UV win by dying in Hell Fortress. Next time, though!
Agility Modded duelist armor is shmexy. The new Tac Armor/Boots are crap because they're no better than slapping an agi mod on anything else worth having.
Hardest part was probably Phobos1, that level's awful on AoMC. Next up is the new Anomaly, which is nigh-impossible without a phase device. The Chained Court (hardmode) and The Wall were also nasty, but those could be taken slowly and cautiously thanks to intuition and MCe. I was out of bullets from The Wall until Hell's Armory, and having to make due with plasma cells and shotgun shells.
Next time, I'll keep the damage from my Nuclear Plasma Rifle at 11. At 12, it started knocking things back and out of its own stream of fire, which led to a few close calls.
I had found the Railgun before in AoMC/UV. My first AoMC/UV, in fact - I got the Railgun on Phobos2 (made Hell's Arena a breeze), but then I wasted all my ammo in the Wall because I didn't realize there were Viles... then I died in the Anomaly. I kept hoping and hoping to see the Railgun again, and I finally did in The Vaults. I thought it was an omen that I was about to die in an embarrassing way; I never expected to be standing toe-to-toe with the Mastermind and still have that thing in my hands.
