Title: 29th Floor: Perfume, Women's Lingerie and Arch-Viles
Post by: LuckyDee on April 19, 2012, 02:08
As long as I'm forcibly taking a break from the game (http://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php/topic,5564.30.html), let's take a moment to take stock of the current situation. I'm going for the A100 Gold, and have made it to 29 so far (highest run up until now was 53, this one currently coming in 2nd place).

I'm a L11 Sharpshooter (SOG3 EE3 MSS WK2 INT2) armed with a stormbolter (so levels 12 and 13 will be SOG again). I have a focused double prepared, and a missile launcher stashed away somewhere for the dirty work, 2 stacks of rockets, 2 stacks of shells and about 10 stacks of 10mm. Armor isn't grand (P-modded blue with a T-modded red as a spare), but I'm only 1 P-mod short of the Cerberus boots. Sidequest: finishing off 1 Mancubus with a slap in the face, so my experience rank rises (though I won't be buggered if this doesn't happen).

Apart from taking time to not make any stupid moves, what else advice could I do with in order to increase my chances of bringing home the gold?

Can't get BAD, since TAN is blocked, but IRO makes sense. Then again, so do HR and REL, but I guess it depends on whether you wan't to go for speed or for stamina.

HRx3, RELx2 (well, with HR3 you can disengage and reload), IROx1-2, FINx3 or Fin-Jug to be able to pull out your heavy armament in case of being pwn3d.

L40 now, with SOG5 and HR1. Saw my end coming a few levels back, starting in the corner of a room and more or less being trapped by 2 viles and 4 or 5 mancubi. Through the magic of sharpshooting, the viles were dead before anything could act, and on the first shot one of the mancubi was kind enough to blast me a hole in the wall through which I could flee like the Wizzard I am ('He who fights and runs away, lives to run another day!').

Found Malek's armor in the meantime, and completed the Cerberus boots, and so far I seem to have jumped the current difficulty curve and landed on the other side. Time for groceries and lunch, and then back to kicking ass and shoving mud, shoving mud (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jgzfjOHdFc).

IROx5 - Dooooo it!
You'll thank me later when you land in a Cyberdemon Cave or Mancubus Complex around dlvl 80.

Good point.

OK, at 61 now. Got my last Mancubus-in-melee kill, and about umpteen assemblies so far. If this keeps up I'll have everything that doesn't require an onyx, nano, BFG or chainsaw. At IRO 4 now, courtesy of Maizure. I keep saving at regulare intervals, even though I feel invincible. Maybe I even get to finish this run before I have to pick up my kids at daycare again :)

Need more updates!
Any good uniques or exotics?

At 70 now. Found the Jackhammer, which I decided to keep, since my supply of bullets is steadily shrinking. Found the Jackal earlier, but wasn't impressed enough to keep it. Found a hell of a lot of uniques/exotics, which you'll likely see when I'm posting the mortem for this one (regardless of if I'm going to make it). Found the Jackal earlier, but wasn't impressed enough to keep it.

So far, however, I've assembled the Storm Bolter, Energy Pistol, Focused Double Shotgun, Assault Rifle, Tactical RL, Fireshield (found the Onyx in the first level I played after my previous post), Hyperblaster, Cerberus Armor and Cerberus Boots.

I'm going back in again; I want to finish this before dinner :)

85! Ran into a shambler (toast), a lava elemental (erm... toastier?) and a Cyberdemon (and kept running). Almost there!

Congrats on the gold!

Sharpshooter is an interesting choice for Ao100. I've been trying to make it work on UV with mixed success. (There's just so many of them on UV, though).

For me (on Not Too Rough) the combination with INT2 made all the difference, even when enemies are coming in from different directions - and the terror would have been even greater had I invested in REL instead of IRO (which in hindsight, I didn't really need). You simply stand in place, fire at everything that comes in range to knock it back, then fire at everything that wasn't in range but shows up due to INT2. Reload and repeat.

This is even easier when you have some kind of cover, but at some point I even stopped trying to find some (with possibly the exceptions of facing nightmare cacos/arachnos).

With EE3 and INT2 it seems like shots into the darkness are damnably effective, especially with knockback to hold targets at bay. During a MSs game I was picking up computer/tracking maps and able to hit things across half the goddamn level sometimes.

MSs is great for battlefield control.
