Title: ChaosForge Donation Drive!
Post by: Kornel Kisielewicz on October 29, 2012, 19:00
Peril has struck the 'Forge and we need your help! The ChaosForge development PC had a hardware failure and does not boot reliably any more -- time to buy a new PC, and do upgrades. I'd like to humbly ask you for a donation. If the free ChaosForge games have given you a good time, now is the best moment to give something back to help out!

This time, however, I want to do things a little differently -- I want to give you, the donator, something back. Inspired by Kickstarter reward tiers, I decided to do something similar, and to see if it provides an incentive, and to see if it is the right way to go :). The prizes below are for donations done during this Donation Drive only and will be unavailable once it ends!

All of the rewards are digital, because due to the urgent and unexpected nature of this situation, we didn't have time to prepare any physical ones :/.

Also, while the chance of going much over the goal is not big, I promise to have some strech goals planned if it does!

So please, help the ChaosForge survive! And spread the word among fellow ChaosForge players -- we need all the help we can get!

Head to the donation page (http://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php?action=treasury) and help out!

I'd love to donate, but I refuse to do business with Paypal anymore due to an assortment of bullshit. Plus, I can't use my account anyway without uploading information I have no way to upload.

Are there any other options?

Any suggestions welcome. Unfortunately the two major competitors (Amazon payments and Google Checkout) allow only for US/UK based receivers. BitCoin on the other hand is hard to cash in in general.

Would MoneyBookers be a sensible alternative?

Reading about a fair number of issues there. Possible security issues, definitely a tendency to trip anti-fraud systems (which may be why people are worried about security issues)

Unfortunately it's not free for the sender, but Western Union maybe? If nothing else, they're established enough that they wouldn't have the latter problem.

(I can't donate for a couple days at the least anyway, though)

Western Union is of course an option, but the fees are large, especially for small amounts :/. If you need any information (address, or bank information - maybe a wire transfer?) just PM me.

BTW, if ChaosForge would accept Credit Cards by itself, would it change things? There is such a possibility but for the future (and it has a yearly upkeep cost).

I don't have a credit card, but I have a Visa debit card, never had an issue with running it as credit. So yeah, that'd work.

And depending on how much my next check is, I'll look into it - the three-day transfer option didn't appear to have fees when I checked, but that was just a quick skim.

I also can't do paypal. I would like to donate in Bitcoins in possible. You never did reply after I posted in your bitcoin thread. :)

Problem is that here there's no reliable way to convert BitCoins to currency... :/. I'll look into it.

http://mtgox.com/ (http://mtgox.com/) is what most people use, but I admit, it can be a painful process. Ideally, you would be able to just use your bitcoins to buy whatever you needed. However, unless you want to buy some drugs from silk road, there's not a lot of ways to spend them.

Actually, I just had another idea anyways. I could give someone some Bitcoins for paypal money on the bitcoin forums, and have them send the funds to your paypal. I think I'll do that. :) When I do, I'll post the email that will send you the money so that you know it's from me. Is that ok?

Of course it is :)

Great! I'm in debt now because I just bought my best friend a cool birthday present. But as soon as I get more money, I'll donate as much as I can (which isn't much.)

When does this donation drive end? When enough money is raised?

I probably won't have funds to throw around in the near future and I have donated recently, but  who knows? Maybe I'll have a generous mood once paycheck arrives.

I might toss a couple of bucks your way too then this week. I actually need new shoes, but meh... my old ones aren't THAT worn off yet. :P

BTW, I'm a little tempted by the 512,- option, just to have DukeRL made, but it's way too much money for me =(

It'll probably run either for two weeks or a month (didn't decide yet). So still some time for the next paycheck to arrive :)

That is sooo tempting... I feel like nudging my donation just to get this done.

Note: Kornel's tiered rewards are ambiguous with regards to how the amounts are computed -- cumulative over the donation drive or on a particular donation transaction.

Post by: Kornel Kisielewicz on October 30, 2012, 11:56
Rewards will be based on the cumulative donations during the donation period. So no reason to wait :)

24 hours past, and we're 46% to the original goal!

Thank you everyone, I never expected such a reaction - seems as I might have a chance to post stretch goals after all!

I've donated in appreciation for your excellent development of DoomRL. Thank you Kornel.

Cable/wire transfer. In EU it is not so bad when you transfer Euros.

Or credit card.

Paypal accepts credit/debit card without setting up an account. As for Wire transfer or any other form of payment that I can accept in Poland, PM me for details. Be sure to check the fees of transferring to Poland though!

I'd donate like 128 or 256 bucks, but I don't have a checking account/debt account and I don't think my parents would be too wild about donating for a computer game.

Charity and community are worth a lot on a personal level to the giver if it's to a cause you believe is worth supporting. And you'll make a far bigger difference donating here than many other places.

GinDiamond, you can also use the oldest method in the book - find someone with a credit card or paypal, log in on the forum on their computer, ask them to do the donation and afterwards hand it to them in cash :).

j0 Klear, I think by the rules that Kornel has set (heheheheh), I've gone past the USD512 mark for the donation drive.  I'll let you work out the details to get DukeRL made.

;-)

Don't disappoint us.

Oh man.. that's been my dream since not long after I discovered DoomRL. I guess it's time to kick ass and chew bubblegum play through all the duke games my computer can handle and soak up the atmosphere.

Edit: Also, this is extremely generous of you, almost to the point I'm having problems accepting it. On the other hand, I already have dozens of ideas... I guess I'll do my best then.

I live by the forge, I die by the forge -- I am the Chaos Fanatic!

But you have the ideas, so it is only right that you help make DukeRL the TC a success.  I mean, I want DukeRL too, but I'm bad at idea-ing.  =)

Hmm, I'm having trouble deciding on a level (one of the low ones).  I feel silly asking this as the amount is low, but is it kosher to withdraw a bounty if I donate to the drive?

Absolutely not.

However, which bounty would you like me to take over for you in lieu of your donation to the drive?

We're at 80%! At 90% we'll publish the stretch goals!

Thanks all the awesome people :D

Update: I'll definitely be able to donate the Friday after this one (so, just under two weeks). I'll be going with Western Union I think; Bank to Bank has no fee, and if I use my debit card it should be in the next day (as opposed to up to five business days).

I'll PM you to get the information closer to that time, otherwise I'll forget I did it and lose track of it, because that's what I do.

don't worry about it - just checking.

I think I've put you over 90% now :)

First post (even if I was lurking here before) and donated as well.
Not as much as I would have liked to, but this month is a bit particular... Hope it helps though, even if it's already in the stretch goals :)

There we go, finally managed to get a transfer to go through. Should be in your account in a day or two.

But I had to use my debit card, meaning there was a fee added, meaning I couldn't afford to go for the $64. This annoys me.

I'll try to get the other $32 to you sometime; it'll be too late for the donation drive, but I said I'd do it so I'm going to.
