Hmm... I'm tempted... but on the other hand I wouldn't be able to promise anything, as my life isn't that stable as I would like it to be. And this would force me to go through the Horatio Hornblower books again, LOL!

I could at least put you in good direction in the beginning. May of the ideas I had in mind for StarWarsRL could be used here as well, including the progressive development approach - what you said about expanding the basic game.

However do we really want to start to dabble with this? With StarWarsRL I could finally have the game I'm waiting for 15 years or so. PiratesRL would compete with current "Age of Pirates" and its previous parts - Pirates of the Carribean, Sea Dogs, another Akella game which name escapes me, and Sid Meyer's Pirates!.
I'm really trying hard to imagine ship-to-ship combat. Tactical game would require precise maneuvers to make "raking" possible, for example. How can we show ship's course in ASCII?

Aye, well said, Igor. Never liked the PotC - it always appealed to me as a lampoon version of a pirate movie. For a good example I'd propose the "Cutthroat Island".

The movie sucked beyond comprehension, but I love this little clip. Few forum members may recognize it, despite never seeing the movie (it was the intro for a certain nautical TV programme... ;) )


Too bad you want this as 7DRL, we could use a "Pirates!" port to roguelike... always liked the games developed by Akella...

Reminds me of a certain website which publishes game manuals in PDF - they received request from Blizzard to remove all their manuals. However (after writing them back?) they were eventually granted permission to host them "The only requirement would be to include the proper copyright and trademark information to avoid any legal issues."

Strange, but possibly I found a similar thing in this latest version - the problem is that I didn't pay much attention. I think I could move one more tile after the death message before the screen "washed out"?

You are a reasonable man, so let me put it in this way:

A Jedi-focused game would be based primarily on melee combat (lightsabers) plus Force powers (~magic). Scoundrel/smuggler/mercenary-oriented SW game would feature mostly firefights with some addition of melee "for spice" (like DoomRL). For me melee combat in roguelike games is always... well, a bit like ASCII porn: surely you can imagine what are they doing but you'd like to see some detail :D What I mean is that it's easier to make a working and playable combat system which focuses on projectile weapons (like DoomRL) to a system which prefers melee fighting - which requires extensive skills, tactics, modes and various other factors to make it balanced (like the concept of pain in Berserk). Otherwise it would be a bit boring (just bounce the enemies till one of you die).

Bah! Only when I promised myself not to waste time on Internet forums I find topic like this... ;)

What can I say... I could basically sign myself under Daqin's posts - and I rarely meet a SW fan with similar views on the subject... I, too, miss times when X-Wing, Dark Forces and TIE Fighter rocked the world. I, too, crave for a full blown strategy game set in this universe or a fine RPG (KOTOR was OK, but it's not a real SW to me - for SW you need Empire, Rebellion, Vader, X-Wings, Stormtroopers and so on...).

I even discussed gaming subject on some SW forums, but these are overrun with geeks who have grown into trolls (because Internet gives them false feeling of anonymity and security). I was hoping to rally some people, but I only wasted my time.

If there are few people who could pull this off one of them has to be Kornel. This guy can see his things done (we've got like 4? playable games) and they turn out highly playable as well.

But I'm also worried about LFL/LEC response ("C&D letter", ya know). Yet I hope this could be somehow classified as "fan-made stuff", and especially recently they've started encouraging making fan-content.

I do have several concepts and a general vision of how such game could be done - we could also seek help at other SW-related forums (some of which I used to frequent).

But I'd need Kornel's response - I'm not gonna start daydreaming and typing all of this if it serves no purpose...

It would be even cooler if you could replay the whole starwars story as a RL! =D

AliensRL / a big THANK YOU and YASD

Hi, it's me again. It took me a while to notice that there's new RL game from Chaosforge - boy, what did I miss! I really love AliensRL, mainly for its great playability and all those little touches (hearing "Nash is dead..." again was a positive surprise I secretly anticipated - even though I never owned Amiga I DID saw the original).

Hereby I'd like to thank Kornel again for making this great game. Even though it's small by comparison, its greatness lies in high playability, something what even big titles miss sometimes. This is already third game made by Kornel I play and find enjoyable. So this is not "beginner's luck" or coincidence. This guy has talent - capturing those elusive elements of gameplay and bringing the right "blend" that would suit our taste is often a subject of expensive marketing studies - and this guy strikes three times in a row!
I guess I will check out that Berserk game too, even though I don't like Manga theme (one of the reasons was "Secret Service" mag wasting pages on Manga Room - I pay for game reviews dammit! and the X-Files... uggh... It's a game magazine, guys... I'm sure Kornel remembers times of "SS")

Here's my YAVP-wannabe... as the graveyard shows (wow, it worked THIS time) I got killed only few tiles from the elevator that would take me to lev2 when the aliens popped from nowhere... but I managed to kill that alien b*tch! yee-haaw! And seeing I've only 6% life left I took my killers with me using a grenade (reminds me of "Predator" movie ending scene, hehe!).

I guess I'll give the new game version a try as well :)

Guys, no offense, but I find all those automated "sloganizers" pretty lame. They can only offer you some generic stuff that sounds just like the 99% of the commercial rubbish we're fed every day.

DoomRL is good enough it deserves custom-made slogans from satisfied users ;)

Here are few from me, I just made them up:

You know what I just noticed? The @ representing player is displayed in white (when no armor is worn). That means the marine is a white guy. DoomRL is racist! It's because its creator is white! Ha!
We want a menu where you can select ethnicity!

Also we may suspect that the current player character is heterosexual by default. Darn you, homophobes! We want gay marines, too! We're strong in numbers! (approx. 7% of the population acc. to some research). Make the @ pink, darnit!
