Off Topic / Global crises and how to deal with them
« on: October 21, 2020, 09:53 »
Sooooo... 2020 is not a good year when you're in a band and want to go out on stage. Not that it's a good year when you're not in a band, but hey. I personally went through a rough patch starting mid March, when the effects of virus control measures were rearing their heads. So I did what I usually do - I did a song. A solo effort again, with the big difference with previous stuff being a more pop/electro twist to due to using Renoise to program some drums, bass and synths, and supplement that with live guitars, piano, vocals and (sampled) drums.

Best thing though: I had a blast making a video for it, based around the appropriate theme of 'living room fitness'. Thankfully I found a lot of people around me willing and able to contribute, and I'm very pleased with the result.

If you find yourself in a situation where the current global madness is getting to you, please know that you're not alone, and like reading the big and friendly letters spelling DON'T PANIC, watching this video may soothe you. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did making it. Love, D.

P.S. The title's a pop culture reference. Bonus points if you can guess where it's from and why it ended up being the title for this track.

Off Topic / Crusade show online

Almost titled this topic 'hardcore live stream', but didn't want to get anyone's hopes up :D

I've been mostly silent over here over the past year, with what me not having the hardware to join in the exploration of Jupiter Hell. Besides that, current affairs - the coronavirus - have seriously impacted my life over the last couple of months, one of the most bitter pills being no band practice.

As some of you may know, I'm the drummer for a hardcore/punk band. Tonight, we have the opportunity to play an empty venue - won't be the first time actually, but in this case at least it was planned. Local organizations have been offering live streams of concerts of all kinds of local bands, and our number's up tonight. You are herewith cordially invited to attend. Show will be presented through Facebook (I hope that doesn't deter too many people), and can be found through the venue's webpage here. Noise will start at 9pm CET, little under 6 and half hours from the time this is posted.

I sorely need this moment of catharsis. I hope some of you can enjoy it with me.

Cheers,

D

Hey all,

I thought I'd try something new again. Part of my spare time goes towards writing reviews of local bands, shows and releases for a rock/heavy oriented blog. It's a nice way to get introduced to music that I normally would never be confronted with. By way of exercise and further expansion of my horizon, I propose the following:

You give me the title of an album you enjoy listening too, preferably one that's available on YouTube or Spotify. I will gather my thoughts on it and put them in writing. In return, you receive a title from me, where you perform the same exercise on. No actual knowledge of music or production required, just listen to it and write down what you think/feel, and why.

I'll respond as soon as I can, but it may take some time. Luckily I can listen to virtually anything during my day job, so it shouldn't be too hard for me to get acquainted with the material.

Who wants to take a stab at this?

Ok, so that ended a lot sooner than I'd banked on:

Like I said, I was playing this game mainly for kills, assemblies and items, and to that effect I wasn't disappointed. Some levels were even considerate enough to just dump everyone at my feet :D

Despite all my defensive measures (INT2 and lotsa speed), I had a hard time dragging out that UAC gold, but once I had it in the pocket, everything went pretty smoothly. Had the luck of finding the GCB very early on, never short on ammo, halfway towards the Inquisitor set. Wish I'd found the other half sooner D:

Level 117 started with lots of purple stars just outside my vision: formers and barons, so I start blasting away, going through half of the level's inhabitants before anything can move. Then I hear a familiar *CLUNK* on my right. And revenants. And as I try and take cover to my left, I realise there is none, and I'm stuck with a puddle of lava and some napalm barrels. To top it off, in the end I dodged into the revenant's attack, which triggered a barrel to go off as well. Totally forgot my phase.

Oh well. Having gotten Sharpshooter out of my system, it's time to finally give Malicious Blades a try, methinks.

Post Mortem / [M|AoMC|89%|YAVP] Modest Progress
« on: October 08, 2017, 15:54 »
Ok, fueled mainly by Icy's progress reports, I've been reclaiming those badges I'd scored on my other machine. I really wanted to go for MSs AAo666, because:

1) Never finished it before
2) Lots of kills
3) Lots of stuff
4) Lots of assemblies
5) It's sharpshooter. It's a certifiable stealth death factory when backed up with INT2 and WK2. I may have mentioned I really love this trait one or two (hundred) times.

Unfortunately, this would require reaching 1st Lt. with 12 Silver to be harvested first. After my lucky Marksman run a month ago, I first bagged Centurial Silver (and Gold) on a Vampire build in three tries. I thought I was ready to try AoMC UV again, but after three attempts going belly-up early Deimos at best - Barons and my own sloppiness being my worst enemies - I decided to put that thought away again.

I went for Lightfoot Silver instead, which was as easy as I remembered it to be: Vampire build on HNTR, which additionally netted me the first three Reaper badges. Next up was Strongman Silver, picking up Heroic Silver on the fly with Sunrise Iron Fist and Malicious Knives, masterless build on ITYTD in a single attempt. Next was Speedrunner Silver, Scout chainsaw stairdive on HNTR in two tries. Needed only one more, so I thought I'd do Quartermaster Silver by the same tactics, but I forgot about the stair sense thing.

Back to AoMC then, but on HNTR this time:

Up until Hell, it went really well. Instead of aiming for Cateye, as I did on my UV attempts, I remembered MaiZure's words and went masterless this time. Dodgemaster would have saved my ass on the failed runs, so after INT 2 that was my first goal. Almost swallowed my tongue on the Anomaly, as my phase landed me up against the northern Bruiser's cubicle, in a position to just squeeze out one shotgun blast and run for cover. To my amazement, I cleared that one damageless.

Deimos came and went. Shambler tore me a couple of good ones, but nothing nearly scary. Went into the Spider's Lair and lightly soiled myself when the first Arachnotron managed to squeeze out a burst before my second F-modded chaingun volley could kill it. Turns out it was the only one that pulled it off. Between DM, the BFG and the cell pack, Cybie was a done deal.

Hell got real hairy real quick. Some bad decisions on my part, but a couple of levels put me in a pretty fearsome starting position, and I managed to draw a napalm barrel level among those as well. My attempts at a 100% killrate ended there, and I was starting to curse myself for not bringing the nuke I ran into somewhere on Deimos. I escaped to Hell 7 by way of the Lava Pits - just to wave at the stuff flying around there and be off again - and there was this huge acid river running through it north to south, no bridges. I slaughtered whatever was on my side, and luckily enough the stairs where close by to - although I still had a homing phase. There was a tracking map at hand as well, so while I was considering my options, I picked up. And lo and behold, hidden away in the corner of the map - again, at my side of the river - was the game's second nuke.

Thinking my luck had must've run out by now, I didn't even try to take on Spidey. Downstairs, big boom, done. So, 666 levels of grind, here I come!

Inspired by Icy's escapades, I thought it'd be prudent to brush up on my own skills once more. I have a second copy of The Game That Shall Not Be Named running on another machine, which it turns out I only played 3 games on some two and a half years ago. I wanted to do A100, but since I was too light for that one, I thought I might as well try and get myself shot really quickly and play MSs on AoMr. However, apart from having to look up a couple of assemblies, it actually went pretty well. Crap I even squeezed an Untouchable Badge out of this one, lord knows how. I can count the number of times I got that one on the fingers of one hand. After a horrible accident at the sawmill.

Anywho, I was hoping to find some kind of awesome pistol of course, but no such luck. I started out with the speedloader, and switched to a high power version once MSs kicked in and I had enough ammo chains to back me up. I skipped the arena - naturally - but did go for the Chained Court, the Military Base, the Amory and the Halls of Carnage - after finding a ballistic shield next to the stairs leading to it. Afterwards, I found the duelist armor to slap my onyx mod on, which gives a nice combination of speed and guaranteed protection.

I was dreading Cybie pretty badly, until this happened on Deimos 7:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And then the bastard was only two squares out of my FoV to top it off. After that bit of luck, I decided to just go for it and not get shot too badly anymore. In the end I left a vile and a couple of revenants alive on Hell 6 (lots of lava and a teleporter). I probably could have taken them, but in this case I'd rather beat spidey than risk throwing it all away on that unholy threesome. Two near deaths - the shambler and a revenant - but enough med-packs and cover to retreat and regroup.

Thrilling game all in all, considering I didn't go for the easiest possible game and still beat it pretty sweetly. Yes, my standards are pretty low. I've learned to love myself for it, and you can too. Time to give that A100 another go. If I ever have about 8 hours to spare.

P.S. what's the best build for AoD? That's just about the only challenge mode I've put off for more than five years now. Tips would be welcome.

The sun has long set on Ashburn, the so-called Pearl of Lake Michigan, on a Sunday night in early June. As usual, though, this means the lights in the office of Saul Bernstein, attorney at law, are exuding a pleasant glow that bathes his office in warm tones contrasting the dark streets outside. With the gramophone softly adding to the melancholy of the last days of spring, the inevitable summer looming over the young metropolis with a shadow that always seems to fun deeper than one might expect, the evening could almost be called perfect. To Saul it is, anyway. Ever since losing his wife to an unfortunate traffic accident so many months ago, he's content with these weekly evenings with his neighbors, sipping cognac or whisky and sharing his treasured Cubans - mixed with the soft jazz they go down so well that he may almost forget how much he misses listening to the sound of Elaine's breathing on mildly stifling nights likes this one. But the more the Light giveth...

He has come too far to let this bother him too much anymore. At least for the time being, he has Desmond and James to keep him company, and with their offices-cum-living quarters all situated on the same floor of the same building on East 23rd Street, it has been easy enough to fill the void of her absence with their company. A little bribery of the intoxicating kind helped grease the wheels, sure enough, but to Saul it's a small price to pay, at least for the time being.

"So," he says in his gravelly voice, further enhanced by smoke and alcohol, "what's been keeping you two busy, if I may ask? The Light knows I love to listen to myself talk, but I didn't get to where I am now by neglecting to listen every once in a while." He smirks to himself, staring into the middle distance for a second or two, after which his gaze falls upon his guests again, genuinely interested.

Although I can't find it anymore (without bothering to actually do something that could be considered searching), but I know we've been discussing other RLs at some point. My only contribution to this was Ragnarok, which I had fond memories of.

Well thanks to the great people of classicreload.com (formerly playdosgamesonline), it's back! Glory days! I asked them through Facebook to find it before I went to bed last night and it was online by the time I crawled back out again. Check it out here if you like. Check out their site either way, I got nostalgia coming out m'eyeballs.

Play-By-Forum / Hunter's Moon - Exploring Ashburn, MI [OOC]
« on: March 12, 2017, 16:30 »
Since I have enough players to start going into detail - namely 1 - and am unsure of any further additions, I'm gonna go ahead and start working out the details. Should any other potential players find their curiosity aroused, there's no reason for you not to apply for a part in the story. Just make yourselves heard and we'll fit you in somehow.

Our story is set in the fictitious city of Ashburn, Michigan. The city lies at the northern shore of Lake Michigan, its center falling somewhere in between the real world towns of Gulliver and Gould City. The exact year is of little importance, but the proceedings will take place around the late 30's or early 40's of the last century. The details of both time and place will identify themselves in the IC thread as the need arises.

To start off, we'll need to work out the basics of the player character(s) that will be going through this adventure. In order to do so, there's a simple system of Traits, Talents and Tricks which allow for performing tests to see whether characters succeed or fail at certain tasks.

- Traits are the very core statistics that make up a character, like WoD's Attributes or D&D's Abilities.
- Talents are the broad areas of expertise characters are familiar with, like WoD's Abilities or D&D's Skills. They are also meant to cover all the standard tests players may be confronted with. Bear in mind that this is a work-in-progress thing, and that new insights may lead to a modified set of Talents to be implemented.
- Tricks are highly specialized skills which can be applied only to very specific situations, like WoD's Specialties.

To succeed at a Basic test, a player rolls aD6+b, where a is the level of their character's applicable Trait and b is the sum of the levels of their character's applicable Talents and Tricks. There may be additional bonuses and penalties to the roll depending on the circumstances. A more complex lock will be harder to pick, and a less sturdy door will be easier to force open, for example. If at least one die scores a 5 or more, the outcome of the test is a success. Any dice result of '1' before modification is always a failure, regardless of any modifiers that may be applied after rolling. The more 'natural 1s' you roll, the more disastrous the effects of failure will be.

Some efforts will be likely to be actively countered by other characters' efforts. These are Resisted tests, in which case both sides roll for an applicable Basic test. The higher scorer wins, and the difference between best results may affect the outcome of the situation.

Disclaimer: this applies to all standard tests and may or may not apply to combat as well. The game isn't intended to be combat oriented, and the rules for combat may be made up on the spot.

Assuming the basics are clear, I suggest the following modus operandi:

@thelaptop, you are currently the (only and) key player in this campaign. Due to the nature of the setting, I would like to suggest that your character is a private investigator, licensed by Ashburn PD to help out civilians who can't or wouldn't burden the law with their problems. This means you will be likely to be contracted to perform certain sensitive tasks and have the law at your back as both an offensive and defensive tool - as long as you don't overstep your boundaries.

As any other character, you have 1 point in each of the four Traits, being:

- Ruthless, applying to any situation where subtlety fears to tread. This goes for both physical as well as social interactions;
- Cunning, signifying the amount of raw brainpower you may apply;
- Nimble, expressing your dexterity and agility, both on a physical and a mental level, and;
- Slick, being your ability to influence others around you.

Please accept the job as PI or offer a counter-proposal. Either way, please select any one Trait as your forte and increase its score from 1 to 2. We will proceed once these decisions have been made.

Hi, everybody!

(Hi, doctor Nick!)

Even though the last attempts have been ranging from mildly to severely disappointing, I have gotten The Urge again. And this time, it's for a good cause, too. As I have mentioned before, I'm working on my own little RPG. Visible progress has been very limited, but I've been working on it behind the scenes all the while. I'm now pretty confident I have a both a setting and a system that are going to work, and what I feel I need most right now is putting her into action and see how she runs.

And that's where you come in. I'm looking for:
- People who pop up here on a weekly basis
- Who are interested in RPGs
- And willing to test one set in a film noir setting

I'm offering:
- A nice, dark story in which you shine in the lead role(s)
- An interesting new background against which the story develops
- A willing ear for your opinion on game mechanics

Experience with RPGs? Screw it - I'll take curiosity over experience right now. Time? Well, it's supposed to be a short story, and at the moment time is a valuable commodity to myself as well. If you could manage to do 2-3 posts per week, I'll be more than happy. Difficulty level? Don't think so. If you're imagination is in working order, we'll get there. Mechanics are supposed to be simple and intuitive, and are only applied if and when of added value.

I'll take anywhere between 1 and 4 players. We'll start out with the basics and work our way up from there. With so many new people suddenly frequenting this forum, I'm hoping to find some more volunteers as well. Again, it's supposed to be a low-impact high-entertainment experience, so in my opinion you'd be crazy not to! But I tend to be biased on this :)

So, buttocks clenched right now: who's up for some digging around in the darker regions of a large American city in the 30's/40's of last century?

Daddy needs a new pair of shoes,

Dee

If I'm gonna waste time simply watching stuff, this is the new series for me.

I'm even tempted to pick up D&D. Forsooth!

Play-By-Forum / Hunter's Moon RPG - Work in progress
« on: January 03, 2016, 12:53 »
Hey all,

Even thought my last post on the subject didn't get that much any attention, I'm still sure there are some fellow enthusiasts among you, giving me no reason not to get on your nerves with yet another thread on the same. As I explained earlier, I'm working on a new RPG and have been for some time now. This is something I've been trying on multiple occasions over the last decade or so, and usually with nothing to show for it. This time, however, I feel I'm on to something. Not only have I found a setting that I deeply wish to discover for myself, I'm also working on a lean system to support it.

Since I kept going around in circles for the past couple of months, I decided to try a new approach to development: in order to both catalog and expand my ideas as well as to practice my writing by intertwining them with parts of a story, I launched a blog on Wordpress to which to publish all of this. At the moment, it's pretty much just a vanity thing, although I hope to at least end up with something with which to entertain myself and others around me. Should it turn out to be a marketable idea, I'll gladly take that opportunity to take it out into the world. I'm not expecting anything, though.

In the meantime, some kind of sounding board would be nice to have. At some point, I'd like to do one or more PBF test runs right here on the forum. For those of you who are prone to that kinda thing, I'd be honored if you were to keep an eye on my efforts and give me some feedback every now and then. In a couple of months, I hope to welcome you beneath the Hunter's Moon.

Thanks.

Play-By-Forum / Scavenging - part II
« on: October 10, 2015, 06:43 »
Hi all,

Half a year ago I came to you with a request for input on an RPG idea I'm working on. It's still in development while I'm looking for a suitable supernatural aspect to include. Vampires (the White Wolf variety) have already been mentioned, and in the meantime I've managed to lay my hands on copies of Call of Cthulhu and Werewolf: The Wild West. I've started reading the Angelwalk Trilogy only to put it away after about 60 pages - I'll see if I can be bothered to find out if mr. Elwood is going to get off his high horse eventually.

Anywho, the problem with a lot of supernatural elements is that they are too constricting, too clearly defined by (pop) culture to easily put them to use. After a couple of brainstorm sessions with a good friend, I landed on an idea which I think will make exactly the focus I'm looking for: dead people. Call 'em spirits, ghosts, wraiths, souls, whatever, you catch my drift; it's what supposedly remains after a person's body has expired. There are stories on this subject in every conceivable culture, and just about anything goes. At this point I think the world in general is supporting three major theories, being Eternal Sleep (nothing happens after your die), Afterlife (you go to a heaven or a hell depending on how piously you have lived) and Reincarnation (he who lives and passes away, lives to live another... life). What about the bazillion other current and historical theories, though?

Anyone who wants to contribute on ghosts and what happens to people after they die, be my guest. Anything goes.

Following Tormuse's exemple I would like to burden you with the question of what to name my pet. My wife got me a hamster, and after the initial shock of responsibility - I mean I knew we both wanted one, and we would sometimes fantasise on what it would be like to have rodents of our own, having seen other parents' joy but it still came very sudden - I realised I was ill-prepared for its arrival. I'm now stuck on having to decide what to call it. Any takers?

"Diamond Food" is out of the question, btw ;)
