Requests For Features / Re: Kill Counts in HUD
« on: April 15, 2012, 07:45 »
I still don't think that this kind of information really belongs to a HUD. HUD's are - after all - meant to display only the most crucial information to the player. Information that simply can't be stripped without handicapping the gameplay and/or the player.
But hear me out! I really think that there's a need for the player to be able to see things like kill count and achievment progression - so I think that one cool idea would be to implement a totally new screen (character screen, inventory screen, etc). That screen would perhaps lists all the achievements and the player's progress towards these ones - in-game ofc, and relevant to the current game being played. Many other games have options for displaying achievments in a similiar way. This is just an idea ofc - I'm not the one calling the shots here ^^

I see no reason to have this info on the HUD.
As Game Hunter says: this info is already available via another screen in the game.

Requests For Features / Re: Repeat Level Feeling
« on: April 08, 2012, 11:51 »
I might be the guy doing the HUD for this game for the next release and here is my take on the level feeling message:
My problem with it as it is right now is that the importance of this message does not stand in good proportion to the a) time it's visible on the screen, and: b) the size of this message
I would therefore suggest that the level feeling -message to be displayed separatly from the normal info messages, in a larger font and centered to the top of the screen. It could stick there for I dunno, something like 5 or 10 moves before disappearing.
Would that be a good idea you think?

Comments:
My last Ao100 ended @ lvl74 by an exploding lava barrel. This was before I learned that hey, Fireangel DOESN'T WORK. I had been running around overconfident for like 50 levels and then that happend.
Anyway, I completed my first Ao100 today after over 7 hours of gameplay - damn this challenge is LONG. I initially aimed for a 100% kill rate I think that somewhere after lvl50 I started running into situations that just were to dangerous. And I didn't want to fail this challenge so I just killed some of the monsters (in search for items) and then left.
After lvl80 I ended up in some really insane level. There was like 2 shamblers, a fire elemental (is that their name) and tons of archviles just where I spawned. Now shamblers I can handle but fire elementals are damn scary coz they spawn those damn lava patches. My resistances sucked the entire game so all I did there was homing device > run away to the next floor with the tail behind my legs.
Nuked a few levels as well - mostly because I was lazy, had like 2-3 nukes in my inventory and yea... just wanted to complete this challenge faster.
I got some really sweet weapons early on. The assault shotgun probably saved me through the 20-35 levels and after a while I also found a plasma shotgun which I put a nano pack on. This turned out to be great for two reasons:
-I never ran out of shells as I used the plasma shottie instead of the assault shottie
-I saved lots of inventory space, never having to pick up plasma
Anyway, this challenge didn't feel that hard. Once I got the plasma shottie with a nano pack on I turned into a death machine (even further so once I got intuition). I could just blow up entire levels without the monsters ever even seeing me. And with 2 firestorm packs on my missile launcher the AOE was insane.
Now I feel that I'm ready to start playing on Hurt Me Plenty (H). It's going to be interesting.
(The name of my soldier, "Enker" is a tribute to the Megaman games) :)

Oh I wasn't aware of that - fireangel being bugged...
Well that explains a whole lot. I would've never been so confident around barrels if I knew about that bug earlier.

Comment:
I've been playing Doom RL for a few weeks now so I don't consider me that good at it yet.
My first "victory" was on E - but back then I didn't know about JC so it was only a partial victory I guess? After that I got a full victory (dead JC) on M, and also did the AoB challenge on E. But all these runs have been plagued by a lot of failed attemps - as you can see from this post mortem. Sure I've played some U games and challenges that obviously were too difficult but most of these losses were due to my lack of experience with the game.
Anyway, about Ao100:
I've been trying to do this challenge for some time now on M, and it took me a few attempts before I figured out how to pass the 25 to 30th floors. After this, I got to like floor 32 but ran out of ammo and died. I was so frustrated because I didn't understand how the FUCK you were supposed to get past that. But during this run I learned something new:
Sometimes you just get a bad streak of levels. You sometimes get lots of lava levels with shitloads of barrels and tons of mancubi, archvile and the other high-end monsters - those who don't drop you any ammo besides the occasional rocket.
This time, although I did get these bad luck streaks again, I managed to get by them somehow. I was also lucky about getting some proper weapons early on: I got an assault shotgun before I could assembly a tactical shotgun - so I went with that one because I could attach 5 mods to it (being a techie +2p whizkid). I also got Malek's armor early on - at lvl 21. I also got a napalm launcher at around lvl25 I believe and a railgun at lvl31 - all of this was invaluable.
I felt that I had finally "solved" this challenge after I had completed the lvl25-35 levels I struggled with previously. Things went on very smoothly actually - I was rarely close to dieing: almost always above 100% hp, except for like one time.
The death? It was a YET ANOTHER STUPID DEATH.
With no monsters near me I moved towards some lava barrels to get a berserker healthpack. I did not hear any monster growling in the direction (northwest) I was moving. Before I could even react, a Mancubus blew those two lava barrels just next to the box and I was ONE-SHOTTED with 100% armor and 100% HP. Very funny - NOT.
I know this game is supposed to be hard - I get that and it's something I enjoy. I played Doom as a kid and I remember that the game was merciless. But this? This is just broken game design imo. I don't even consider myself doing any mistake here. I moved to get a pickup in a position that I thought was 100% safe. I know barrels are dangerous but with Fireangel I felt pretty safe - I had survived barrel blasts prior to this. But this Mancubus instablowing two lava barrels close to me... there was NOTHING I could do there.
So yea... it really SUCKS to die at lvl74 when things were going so great. Lvl 40 to 74 felt like a breeze - with only minor obsticles here and there. This death was so unlucky and so random - like if the power to my PC had been cut or something. -_-

Hello
My name is Martin and I'm a 27 year old game developer.
I'm interested in the position as a UI artist. I would love to design and create the UI for Doom RL - and wouldn't mind doing some other 2D work as well (tiles or whatever).
I'm a professional who have studied 3D art/game development and worked with several game projects - both educational ones, mods and more professional ones... even developed a AAA-title when I worked at Avalanche Studios (makers of Just Cause).
Currently I'm working full-time as a graphic artist for Polarbit - a developer of mobile games and middle-ware - so I think that this project would be very suitable for me... for several reasons:
-My strengths are texturing, 2D and graphical design.
-I have a good understanding of game development and seeing things from both the developer's and player's view.
-I've been looking to work for a mod team, or found my own one, but been kept back by my full time job. A light project such as this one would be perfect.
-I'm interested in getting more practical experience with 2D-art.
-I'm a genuine fan of retro games (I played Doom, Quake and all the classics back in the 90's!) so finding this game via moddb.com was quite a treat.
-I'm a real photoshop guru.
-I'm used to working against deadlines, using sub-version software such as SVN, working according to scrum and so on...
Last but not least, my portfolio:
www.martin.dahlin.net
It's a bit out-dated (haven't really uploaded anything new for a couple of months now) but it shows a bit of what I'm capable of.
CV, contact details, education, etc is all there at the site.
Let me know what you think. Thanks
/Martin
