This run is actually a couple of days and games ago already, but I thought I'd share it anyway. During the UV AoMC runs I did, I'd taken up the idea to try out an INT2-MGK build, see what that would do me. Since I was - and still am - aiming for UAC and Veteran Gold, and MGK has served me well in at least one HNTR game, it had to be a standard game.

Why this game was great: I knew I wasn't going to make it when I was only just past the Anomaly. I took severe punishment on more than one occasion, found myself being screwed around by the RNG too often as well, and - icing on the cake - I misclicked on the last level-up and chose REL instead of SOG ><
However, I persevered, and kept playing as well as I could. I'm actually amazed I got into Hell at all, although I didn't do more than peek past the front door and into the hallway. It did show me that even some very bleak situations can eventually turn out just fine, if I take a moment to do a mental retreat-and-regroup, and redouble my efforts.

Why this game was terrible: MGK is outright terrible, at least when you find only standard pistols and hardly any decent mods. The fire speed is tremendous, and I could easily squeeze off 12 shots (DG at work, of course) into an archvile's face before he had a chance to raise as much as an eyebrow. Problem is: I'd need at least 6 more bullets to finish him off. I was actually stunned by how hard it sucks.
Have a look at my starting position on the last level, and let me know what - if anything - could have been done to avoid certain death.

Any other tips and tricks on MGK or pistol builds on higher difficulties in general would be much appreciated too.

Well, MaiZure, as promised: after only four or five proper attempts, I finally landed my first UV victory. Had some nasty surprises in the first runs, so I decided to just play it safe and stick to the levels I thought I could take. Arena wasn't too much of a hassle, and I already did the Abyssal Plains on another run, so I took a chance on those again too. Spider's Lair? Uh - no. I was praying I wouldn't be dropped into an Arachnotron cave, which of course I was. Luckily, I was invulnerable when stepping in. In the end I still had to phase out of there, since I had crossed a big patch of lava to get to the stairs - and only partly while invulnerable - and they turned out to lead to the Mortuary. A big 'no thank you' right there again.
I came prepared, luckily, with enough homing phases and large medpacks to toss about. Eventually I found a Berserk pack lying close to the level 22 entrance, so I nabbed it and phased out. Level 23 stairs were only 5 tiles away, still should have phased though, but hey - entered Dis still zerking away.

In the end it didn't matter a single thing: I just started blasting away at the earliest opportunity, and Spidey started flinching from the first hit - she never even fired a single shot. A short duck-and-cover to reload, and that was that.

Got an unexpected Silver badge out of it, but that pales in comparison to the valuable insight playing UV AoMC is giving me. I think I'm gonna try some other UV game now - HNTR seems really lame all of a sudden. Thanks again to thelaptop and MaiZure for giving me a nudge in the right direction. I've found a whole new dimension of pain-filled fun, and am enjoying every second of it (:

My first proper UV game - ie, one where I didn't chicken out or got killed on the Base Entry - and it was BRILLIANT. Maizure, thelaptop, you were right, this is a great way to broaden the horizon.

First I thought I was going to die on dlev 2 or 3. A lucky kill-em-all lever on level 2 got me INT2, and my hopes rose. I skipped most special levels, figuring I wasn't going to tempt fate. I would have given the Military base a shot (with INT2, that should be pretty doable), but the RNG gave me Phobos Lab instead.

Then I thought I was going to die at the Anomaly. I rocket-jumped back to the start, took only 1 or 2 blasts from the cacos and had enough stuff to ease the pain. Was stupid enough to rocket a Bruiser Brother within my LOS, won't make that mistake again any time soon :S Dealing with those two (INT2 and a plasma rifle) was a breeze.

By that time I started believing I was nigh invincible. Did the Abyssal plains cause it seemed like a great idea (combat shotty, coupla boxes, plasma rifle with plenty of ammo) and it was. Got my killing spree up to about 170 there, earning me my only medal for this run.

Then... I got hasty. First level after the Plains I spawned surrounded by a pain elemental due west, a group of sergeants, commandos and hell knights north west and some more stuff (sergeants and imps, I think) northeast. It took a bit of balancing, but I came through virtually unscathed. Half a level later I learned that commandos don't go down too fast, and they do a shitload of damage on AoMC UV as long as they're standing up.

All in all this was the most fun run I've ever played, it's great to be challenged like this. Can't wait to get my next load of punishment.

Finally! After 21 months - okay, with a few lengthy pauses - I managed to grab my first Platinum badge. Made myself really proud, even though it's the easiest one to earn (by far). This puts my first Diamond within reach, too...

After my last A100 attempt I tried a few other games, mostly AoI since this is one of the Bronze I'm still missing. Most attempts ended in either the Base or Phobos Lab, so I thought I might as well take up my previous plan and go for Tech again. I really love the INT2 Sharpshooter, and I'm much more at ease playing A100 than most other games. And now I've found out why.

In A100 I set my sights on the Master and just steadily work my way there, taking everything I encounter in the meantime in my stride. In normal games, my playstyle is usually a lot more nervous, fussing about special levels, items and whatnot. I think I really need to apply my A100 attitude to all other games as well, see what that gets me.

So, humor me: for my next game I can either:

1) Aim for my missing Bronze by playing AoI/AoD/AoRA/AoCn on HNTR or
2) Aim (too) high and go for Shottyman Gold (probably on a Fireangel build, since I've yet to try that.

Bug Reports / [0997G WinXP] Phaseshift Set [WARNING: SPOILERS]

For I think the first time I was actually running around in the full phaseshift set, when I noticed I wasn't taking any damage from lava. I was almost going to log a bug about the lava - there's no mention of me being immune to it in-game - when I thought I'd check the wiki, on the off-chance...

Well.

So the set does cause the immunity, but:
1) It isn't mentioned in-game and
2) Contrary to what the wiki suggests, the boots don't take damage from the lava (haven't tried acid yet) nor acid.

Since my last game, it turns out, was in April, I thought it was about time to polish my plasma rifle and follow Moonshine Fox' example: do a built-for-speed MAc. I had only casually experimented with this build before, and he made it seems really impressive. And he was right.

I was made all the merrier by finding no less than 3 nuclear plasma rifles, the first of which I had even before I got to the master trait. I never had to touch a single plasma cell in the entire game. I had my sturdy Ceberus boots for rough terrain and the unpronouncable ones for running, so that went smoothly as well. Eventually I believe move speed was about a third of a second, and fire speed little over half. I could have probably improved that by not making a burst weapon, but since my initial plan was using a hyperblaster and I had mods to spare, I thought I might as well do a little tinkering while I was at it. Intuitively speaking I could probably have chosen a better assembly, but in the end it worked out great.

There were only 2 or 3 close shaves the entire game, all of them in the lower levels. Level 100 started me in a room with a Bruiser Brother, a Shambler - which summoned its mate in about 5 turns - 2 Viles, 3 or 4 Mancubi and a Nightmare Arachnotron. All I did was stand there and shoot stuff and I still came out with 147% health and 63% armor.

A very sloppy run overall (What, 100 levels and only a bronze UAC Star? Highest kill streak was 44, around dlev 20, never improved it), but then I could afford to play sloppily, especially after finding the Lava Armor. I'm glad I won, and playing MAc was fun, but now to whine about it:

1) I still play like a tit. Couldn't even improve my streak when I tried, so in the end I just gave up, focusing on my secondary objectives. These were:
2) Build a VBFG9000. Been carrying the mods for about 70 levels, never found a BFG. Would have netted me Technician Platinum, my first Platinum ever.
3) Build a cybernano armor, out of the duellist's in this case. I've only ever found a nano and onyx mod on runs where I could never hope to achieve WK2, and this was no different.

All in all: good to be back, less so to realize that I still haven't left mediocrity behind. I'll probably just try it again with an INT2 MSs, praying for enough stuff to nab those last 2 Tech badges. Only another 6500~ kills to rise to the rank of Arch-vile, and A100 is a big help there, too...

There appears to be a FREAKING HUGE advantage with the Revenant's launcher when playing with the mouse instead of the keys. Here's a little experiment:

1) Aiming RevL with the keys gives you an 8 tile range:


2) Then with the mouse, say a 32 tile range:


3) Does it work? Hell yeah!


4) It goes all the way to the other side of the level...


5) ... 'cept the missile seems to get distracted en route. It doesn't actually arrive there...


...and judging by the last picture, it doesn't actually end up anywhere either; nothing else seems damaged in the missile's path (I tried this in another level as well, where I pressed prtscr instead of F10, had the same results).

Being able to hit something at 32 tiles (and possibly more) with pin-point accuracy is just.... wrong. Additionally, so is missiles going AWOL after being fired. With a weapon like this, a hard-coded max range might be in order, which would of course have to be the same for those who have the advantage of a mouse.

Right, squeaky clean board - time for some action.

As you will have seen by now, both by the changes in the ChaosForge Team (among which I am fortunate enough to count myself) and by the teaser that was launched this weekend, stuff is happening behind the scenes. Although I want to leave it to Kornel to start presenting you with proper details, I at least want to inform you that up until this point close to 700 posts have been devoted to plotting Jupiter Hell, with a lot of really exciting stuff being put on display. A lot of the content is still being invented and discussed, but this discussion takes place in an arena founded on a well thought out concept and an equally well formulated vision, all courtesy of the big man behind the scenes.

Jupiter Hell has gotten the informal subtitle 'spiritual successor to DoomRL', and it will be just that: in some significant ways it will be different than the DoomRL you've come to know and love, but the essence of the game will be the same. In general terms it would be fair to say that the mechanics will be based on the same principles that make DoomRL a great game, and that the story and background are an homage to Doom itself. There will of course be more to Jupiter Hell than just these two factors, but since these will strike a chord with every single of you, I'd like you to step up to the mic and have your say about them.

What is it that makes DoomRL that leaves you begging for more even though you get slaughtered at least every other game? What would you definitely like to see in its younger brother? What could be improved, or added? And about the background of the original Doom; what features made it shine? What enemies made you drop your jaw when you first saw them, and for what reason?

Since I am very much into music and curious as to what bands and styles other players like, here's a mental excersize for you: let's say Doom(RL) came without a musical soundtrack, just the option to insert whatever you'd want to listen to. What bands/songs/styles/etc would you add?

At The Drive-In - Arcarsenal
Dillinger Escape Plan - Calculating Infinity

Tool & Air mainly for the atmoshpere of the songs; Rammstein, Millionaire and ATDI for the cojones plus the fact that they have something unique to their sound, and DEP because it's really really twisted (this is one of their 'lite' songs), much like the mindset DoomRL requires.

I haven't seen a single minute of the Walking Dead up until now - mainly because it's not being broadcast on regular channels over here and for no reason whatsoever I never download movies or tv shows - and I don't know if I should. I watched half an episode of Game of Thrones and decided I simply wasted, what, an hour? I fear Walking Dead is equally too let's-attract-a-mainstream-audience.

Although my positive views of MSc in general have shifted somewhat - once I have discovered all assemblies, chances of me playing it again are slim, especially in a regular game, and with the relatively huge amount of sniper and firestorms it got me it brings no better offensive advantage than other master traits, even when no basic traits are blocked - I must say I made incredible progress assembly-wise: when I started, I was short 8 advanced and 6 master assemblies, and now it's just 2 of each. The slap in the face came around dlev 180, when I finally found the Onyx mod I'd been hunting for for about 150 levels, to complete the fireshield: the nanofiber skin I made on 98 wouldn't come off, thereby ruining my chances at any Technician badge. I swallowed hard, but decided to press on anyway.

Levels came and went and came and went and came and went. With a storm bolter, SOG5, SOB5 and EE4 (thanks Radagast), there were actually very little real threats. The inventory you see didn't really change much over the last 200+ dlevs; I never ran out of medkits, never ran of homing phases, and never came close to running out of ammo. I decided to keep the relatively cumbersome nanomachic I made on 221 as a backup anyhow, fun little toy.

Once I reached level 25 I stopped clearing every level and just started dashing for the stairs asap. I was of no avail: realizing how much time I had already been playing, and how much levels I still had to go without obtaining any further goal, I decided to just flip off all those demons out there and do what they were unable to for the last 16½ hours: kill me. Sweet relief.

I'll hunt down the last couple of Tech badges in standard games, possibly with a Scavenger - although any other Technician build save Entrenchment sounds like a better plan to me. For a regular game I'll take Sharpshooter over no blocked basic traits any day.

Educational run, all in all, just too bad it's soooo boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooring. :)

From the Wiki assembly page:

"Assemblies can also be modded in limited circumstances. If the player has the second level of Whizkid before the assembly is finished, they may then add a single mod to that assembled item."

I did indeed make a nano-modded tac RL before (not a nanomanufacture RL, stupidly enough, but hey). Now I want to slap a P-mod on a storm bolter , and the game says I can't. Both the tac RL and the storm bolter were made from regular weapons.

Discussion / Poll: which medals can we do without?

Inspired by another discussion about medals, and having had doubts about certain medals before, I'd thought I might as well set up a poll about it. I've selected the 10 medals I have least confidence in, and some of you will likely sooner see others disappear, but hey, it's my poll.

A bit of background as to why these 10:
Cyberdemon's Head + Mastermind's Brain: I have earned a combined total of 8 of these in 20 games, 7 of which due to invulnerability. One lucky sphere - which is actually pretty common - and you're there. Hell, you get a free Mastermind's Brain with every full win.

Gambler's Shield
: Is this actually possible? I don't believe I've ever seen a non-A100 game with this many levers in it, let alone I felt lucky/stupid enough to pull them all.

Gutts' Heart+Grammaton Cleric Cross: Being able to lift the DS should be worth a medal in itself; slaying the Mastermind with it would be the only logical result, I guess. Shooting (not even killing?) the MM with the GCB is only a matter of actually finding a GCB in a standard game (the only 2 I ever found were on A100), too arbitrary.

Thomas's Medal+Every Soldier's Medal+Spider Killer's Cross: Earning the first nearly automatically means earning the other 2 as well - at least it used to on 0996. Now it's only a matter of lucky level spawns. And besides that, it's kinda insane. Spider Killer could be done with a lucky invulnerability - I did the Spider's Lair on AoMC today thanks to exactly that - most other levels.....*shudders.

Iron Skull: blegh. No further explanation needed.

Hell Arena Pwnage Medal: Come on. The Arena on N! is enough of a challenge as is. Not suffering damage whilst trying to get shot in order to destroy corpses... nuff said.

These are my poorly phrased opinions, feel free to disagree. With all the creativity floating around the forum, though, I think we can come up with some better medals than these.
