Megasphere? What Megasphere, I've never seen one. What would it even be in DoomRL, a powerup that gives free ammo, like in original DOom? This would be stupid, and counter-intuitive with the inventory managemet being present.

Discussion / Some Ammochain thoughts

As of now, the Ammochain is definitely one of the most prominent 'easy' buttons the game has, and by far the most consistent. I'm not asking to nerf it (after all, I'm posting it in Discussion, not Feature Request), but if it is decided it needs a rebalance, let's think of how it could be done:

Ammochain is so powerful, because it solves multiple problems all by itself. Army of the Dead, for example, solves only the problem of giving the shotguns plasma damage, which stacks well with the Shottyman prereq effect, and it is already good. MAc solves many problems by itself at the same time:
  • It totally obliterates the reloading subgame.
  • It totally obliterates the ammo collection subgame.
  • It obliterates the inventory space management subgame (for ammo, at least).
  • The previous also opens a new tactic of shoot-scouting, which is pretty comparable to the effects of a Cateye, for example.
  • It obsoletes the chaingun, making the plasmagun the weapon of choice a no-brainer, and effectively giving you unlimited plasma damage.
  • It simplifies the modding subgame. as bulk mods become totally worthless, the WK is a prereq, and PT mods being very synergistics with the basic trait prereqs.

So, to preserve the spirit of MAc, the first function, in my opinion, must stay no matter what. I propose for consideration a way which will rebalance the 2,3,4 and 5th point:

The Ammochain allows you to stack all the 10mm ammo and plasma cells indefinitely, and chains those stacks into the equipped rapidfire weapon indefinitely

Basically, you'll still need to collect ammo (thus, offsetting the 2nd point), which will stack similarly to the backpack effect, but indefinitely (so, there'll be 2 slots filled, '10 mm ammo(x1284)' and 'plasma cells (x450)', as a corollary to 3), and channelled directly into the weapon, so 1 stays the same.

Now it makes sense to keep the chaingun (and maybe get the Juggler as 8th trait), as the 5th point signifies, for times when you don't need plasma and are forced to conserve bullets such as out-of-LoS shooting (4th point)

The presence of Chaingun also makes the modding subgame a bit more interesting, seeing as it and the plasmagun serve different functions - i'd specialise them like T3P2 chaingun for out-of-LoS scouting, and AT2P2 for plasma, maybe even considering A2TP2/A2T2P for bullet conservation.

(Concerning the Elite Diamond Badge, the introduction of gibbing will make it possible even with such modifications to MAc, I think. Though for me it is still impossible, for now :) )

That's the gist of my idea, all discussion is welcome. It will be interesting to see, at least, the point of view of fellow DoomRL players on MAc balance.

Looked like a super-rific run though.  In spite of the ridic armor you decided to focus on it even more with maxed Ironman.  Usually on UV I find it's so much more important to build a solid foundation of strength, but I suppose MAc made up for that.  Still, a third SoaB couldn't hurt, yeah?

Actually, I worried more about some stupid keypress mistake ruining such a good run, so I wanted some buffer HP. Third SoaB was not actually needed for P2T2 plasmagun, since 2 volleys take care of almost everything before it could react, and blindfire is always an option (netted me a shiny gold cluster, too) =)

The only thing plasmagun couldn't keep up to, was a pain elemental cave. The souls just overwhelm even a T2 one

This is a major milestone for me - first ever win on standart Ultra-Violence. Having already cleared the UV AoMC, I tried to MAc my way to victory in U after two successfull Ao100 runs, hoping to put my improved skills to test.

Alas, the game was determined to mock me, and went into a double-easy mode, generating the Malek's armor on level2, which, with Ammochain and fully modded plasma in Armory basically guaranteed the smoothest sailing ever since HNTR. Everything else, including Missile Launcher and Phaseshift Boots spawning 2 spaces from an agility mod, was just icing on the cake. Swapped to double-BFGs and Necroarmor for more Cybie humiliation =)

Now only 1 more gold for major, pity not a Strongman Gold also

my two cents...

Angel of Traits - You were always a prodigy, able to get to the gist of things others had trouble with. But in Hell, there are demons almost as smart as you.

Gives player two traits at start-up, and removes all trait blocking. But every monster you meet also gets a trait. Or maybe even several - preferrably random.

Nobody expects a pack of SoB'd captains, dualgunner former humans, or a cat-eyed arch-vile with a pack of Int2 revenants (you ARE dead here =) )

After a streak of ultra-violence standart games, hmp is so watered down... decided to rack up the pistol kills to achieve Mancubus rank and do a HMP AoMr YAAM run.

This build feels much nicer than MGK - the awesome kickback in particular is nice, and no wasted slots on HR/DM. All went fine, especially Onyx Armor, though no adv pistol or useful unique in Hell Armory. Then after two Arach caverns I found an Inv globe near the entrance to Spider's lair. I tended to balance my inventory in medkit favor, and had only 150 ammo left - but decided to clean it. Then in the next level only one chaingun surfaced, and no Santa-Clausy red 'h' ammo dispensers - was forced to kill the last two imps in melee, and hope for ammo in the next level.

No luck with ammo - forced to abandon the YAAM, I phase to the steps and thermie the C. All those unused medpacks in mortem annoy me greatly. Will be much wiser next time.

First partial win, at least =)

Yes, and this is how I usually go about in City... but this time a stray rocket destroyed the releasing lever, so no second BFG for me (as if i really needed it, heh ;)

I feel like PDs only teleport to an empty floor space. I think it would be easier to just ask Kornel himself =)

(As a side note for devs, great game. I tried it a long time ago, when there were no pretty gimmicks, and is now surprised as to the solid chunk of fun it turned out to be ;)

Having Angband (and ToME) experience actually helps getting about the game easier; I think that it's not like that for a nethacker)

addendum: I cleared the City of Skulls, but as i lost my previous character there, i dared not use the lever and instead opened the rooms with rockets, annihilating the second BFG in process. Pity =(

Looking at unique list, i see that the character lacked only Anti-Freak Jackal.  And is it intended that the Spear can be seen from outside the cathedral, being on a wall? ;)

My first win on H, getting me closer to Major rank, this run was insanely packed with pistol and melee uniques. Starting with TaN, as usual, so finding a Blaster on l3 allowed me to branch into a true Son of a Gun. I pondered taking DG for a non-modified pistol, but kept back, until chance got me a Trigun [they stack quite nicely, with Trigun in first slot you do not have to special-reload at all].

Standard cells in Chained Court - Backpack (sniped all those pesky barons behind the wall with only a blaster, as all 5 rockets went into breaching the Wall itself) at Wall - BFG from Halls of Carnage. And then the game throws in my face a red armor, armor protection mod and a Butcher's knife and steps to Unholy Cathedral in two neighboring rooms on L16. Tried playing with AoD - it quickly devoured my armor, depleted medpacks and i was forced to flee using sweet HPD with 3% health. And no heals for the first half of next level too

Beretta on level 20 was overkill - i did not find a use to it, though kept as a souvenir. The Trigun seems to have an advantage as it knocks enemies back a lot.

On l21 I used all my cells in a big room full of V's, M'sm, R's, and B's and cleaning afterwards in a small closet by the side found the Dragonslayer, which was even more overkill than Beretta. And I couldn't pick it up, either ;)

Cybie was a piece of cake - I just advanced until I heard his sounds, then fired east blindly, until i heard grunts of pain. I never even saw him, Trigun did a great job keeping him at bay.

So that's my first H winning run. By the way, what will happen if you use the sweet HPD on Cybie's arena? Will it allow the same thing as using a nuke? =)
