Title: Locked posts
Post by: Styro on December 09, 2009, 14:00
Just curious... What is with all the locked posts?

I remember in the good old days of the interweb it was only the flame war or troll posts which would get locked, but in some of the sub forums here every post older than about 1 or 2 weeks is locked. Is there a reason for that? Is there any danger in leaving those posts open for people to discover and comment on a couple weeks later?

No disrespect meant to the Mods, I am just curious about the reason. It seems to make the forum less friendly to newbies or people who visit infrequently.

I can only speak for ones in Bug Reports forum - these get locked once they're:

a) Posted to tracker
b) The discussion gets to the point where it's obvious that that was not a bug
c) The topic is duplicate/outdated

Reason for that is simple - it makes much easier to check which topics still need to be checked for adding to the tracker and/or relevancy.

As for the topics closed in other forums I can't speak - I think Kornel did lock some old topics in a few forums in past, but don't take my word on it.

Edit: There is also possiblity that some/most/all forums have set an "timelimit" after which topic without activity gets autolocked.

Except the bugs closed by the inquisition, there's a deadline on all except a few boards that autolocks them.

Well we don't really have an endemic problem of inappropriately bumped old threads, and sometimes it's useful to bring an older discussion back to the forefront, so I would prefer if threads weren't automatically locked with time.

I think this was well explained.

Time to lock the post [;
