Discussion / Re: Alternative Background Music for DoomRL
« on: June 17, 2013, 14:10 »
But they will, now that the seed's planted. If you come up with anything, please share. 'Tame' doesn't necessarily mean 'unfitting'. See my example of Air, above, or listen to things like Massive Attack, or for example this track from Jeff Wayne's 'War of the Worlds' (1978!) (check out the full story here [disc 1] and here [disc 2])

Also:

This one?

Yes, that one. It's probably more fitting for a special level or something. Maybe if Kornel bothered to secretly implement Nazi SS somehow. (Maybe the Apostle is a Nazi officer? Iunno.) I've got enough music and types of music on my computer to conclude that at least some of it might be appropriate for DOOMRL, anyhow; even including a little bit of metal. I've got diverse tastes. :p

I'd probably throw in a rip of the DOOM music anyway. :p

Other than that, I...I'm not really sure what I'd put in. It would definitely be something rock, even if it might be a bit older/tamer than some of what you've posted. No specific examples come to mind. Also, game music like the Battlefield 1942 theme.

I also just found the sounds from DNF. I still need the sounds from the two DNF expansion packs and the first two games, though.

I'd expect a lot of dodging. And sand daggers. (disclaimer i have never played PoP)

And Kornel meeting Romero is awesome. We still don't know what Romero thought of DOOMRL though.

Title. This thought popped into my head a while back. You think Romero would like DOOMRL's gameplay? You think Carmack would like the LUA code? I even considered e-mailing them and asking them, but maybe Kornel is more suited to do something like that (or a senior developer/community member with more guts than I. Iunno.)

I figure, as long as the player file remains backwards compatible, I'm gonna keep using it =P

This is a pretty great guide; I even learned a couple things. Glad it was sticked; it should go on the wiki when it's finally updated. I'll refer to it when I start branching out from Survivalist/Army of the Dead at any rate.

I recently played the Containment Area. Damn good level; I was on edge and still managed to kick ass. I like the locked rooms with the loot in them as well; I wouldn't have been able to fight those Barons/Knights without the Missile Launcher/rocket box. Also the Backpack! was nice.

Modding / Re: Oldschool sprites for DoomRL

I tried it and frankly I prefer Yu's graphics. They're more visually distinct, and the player sprite shows the equipped weapon and armor. Your mod is good, don't get me wrong, but I simply prefer the other graphics.

Thanks for that, SPTX. This thread is proving to be quite the information source! And Kornel, would it still be possible to implement branches in a mod?

Good on you, Kornel, and I'm going to try this out sooner or later. Looks damn good.

I need to play Heretic myself, but I'm still looking forward to this mod. Hope you haven't given up on it.

I've recently found a pack with all the sounds from not only DN3D, but the Life's A Beach and possibly Duke It Out In DC expansions. If you're thinking of doing related stuff, it could be useful.
