Title: Who's up for...?
Post by: LuckyDee on March 22, 2013, 09:51
Having very much enjoyed the PBF experience as a player and having a lot of time on my hands, currently, I'm thinking of opening a thread as GM/DM/ST/Big Kahuna myself. Point is: I can't or won't decide yet on what type of game this should be. I've seen various good ideas floating around here, and I have experience with a number of settings/systems from the pen&paper scene, but I think I'd most like to try something new.

Please, anyone who is interested in playing, respond and let me know what kind of game you're looking for. I want to hear general descriptions (eg. 'dungeoncrawling', 'steampunk', 'postapocalyptic'), not brands/systems. We'll see what evolves.

Shoot!

Steam punk, eh? Ideas have already started forming...

If I did, I think I'd create my own setting, but it never hurts to get inspired. Anybody know any good sources?

Knights in space. With plate armor and jousting and aliens and ray guns and such.

Reminds me of very very very very long ago (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hd1ZETYrxkY/T4R0SY7JDRI/AAAAAAAABWQ/clksqv6-7xM/s1600/Joust.jpg)....

Interesting concept though. Any existing examples?

None that I can think of. Although, I did have a dream like this last night. My group and I were going to see some really important knight in this ancient monastery type deal, where monks in robes lined the hallway leading to his chamber. Before we could enter, we had to turn over all of our weapons which consisted of swords, wands, laser pistols, etc. etc. Also, there was a reptile dude in our group.

The knight himself wasn't anything too impressive; plate armor with tattered robes and a cape over it.

Actually, I guess the closest thing would Wizardry 6 through 8.

EDIT: If you're interested, here is Wizardry VII over on Abandonia. http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/247/Wizardry+VII+-+Crusaders+of+the+Dark+Savant.html

Also, there was a reptile dude in our group.

Fantastic: can't have too many reptile dudes (http://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php/topic,5762.msg48204.html#msg48204). :)

I'll be sure to check it out tomorrow.

Post-apocalyptic. I want to be on a world where the sun is dying, the planet is dying, and your dinner is trying to make a meal out of you before you get a chance to make a meal out of it.

LuckyDee, any sort of news on what direction you'd like to take?

I have a strong suspicion, but I was actually kinda expecting for the response to be at least a little bigger....

Anybody care to speak up before decisions are made?

No preferences, but I'm definitely in.

...and that makes 4 contestants.

Since the steam punk idea has been sending sparks through the grey matter for the last couple of days, it's going to be just that. The setting will be 19th century London, England in a copy of our own world, where Aether - the fabled fifth element - has been both the shepherd and the wolf in the evolution of man since the dawn of time. More details to follow.

First, I'll be wanting confirmation of up to four players. If more turn up, the people who have responded up until now will have preference.

Ok, consider this my confirmation then. Should be fun! :D

Good stuff. I'm counting Klear's last post as well, considering we were already in touch about this beforehand.

In the meantime, please take a moment to read this (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aether_%28classical_element%29), and possibly some of the stuff it links to. I'm not going to simply copy it into the game, but it gives a nice basis from which to extrapolate Steam Punk Earth.

Already read it =)

BTW, any chance you could incorporate Phlogiston (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phlogiston_theory) into the setting? It's my favourite scientific blunder, probably because I like the sound of it. Phlogiston... =)

The phlogiston theory (from the Ancient Greek φλογιστόν phlogistón "burning up", from φλόξ phlóx "flame"),

TOTAL BURNINATION (http://www.homestarrunner.com/sbemail58.html)!

I like it already :)

EDIT: Read it. Don't get your hopes up.

Raekuul, thelaptop - care to officialy either confirm your participation or bail out?
As you have probably seen, the framework is being built, and I would like to know how many players I can be counting on, thanks.

Seen and replied again. To everyone, please keep a close eye on your PM, especially when the game starts; information that's not immediately available to all players will likewise not immediately be posted for all to see. I don't know how often I'll be using it (if this were Vampire, probably half the campaign would go by PM :S ), but be prepared anyhow.

As I will be getting married tomorrow (sadly without the Karaoke Party all of you so enthusiastically contributed to (http://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php/topic,5688.0.html)) it'll be a bit longer before we can get started. Aim is to have all preparations (complete setting online+characters created) done by the end of next week, and kick off immediately afterwards.

@Raekuul, are you on board?

@Everyone else, regardless of whether you're playing; please have a look at what I came up with so far (http://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php/topic,6253.0.html); as I'm building the setting from scratch and - although the setting intrigues me very much - I hardly have experience with steam punk, any input you care to give would be most welcome. I hereby direct you to the Lock and Feather Inn (http://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php/topic,6254.0.html) for further discussion.

Im having all of my SMITE buddies over to my house to watch the live stream. Really wish we could all go, though. What are you guys doing for Worlds?
