Sorry for littering the thread then... Thanks a lot for the workaround!

I think this is a little more widespread than might seem from this report.

At current, this happens to me whenever I die during any Challenge game on any nonrandom level (Babel, Chained Court, The Wall, and Dis so far). Some details that might help resolve this:
- Bug is highly reproducible so far.
- On normal levels, I get no crash, .mortem as usual.
- Nuking the SMM in Dis also had the same effect.
- The resulting save file is always corrupted and subsequently discarded.
- Seems to be related to this and this.
- Since this started I haven't tried standard games so not sure if the Challenge stuff is relevant. But, the other cases I linked to are also Challenge games.
- I'm running Win7 64bit. Judging from this and other threads OS doesn't seem to be a major factor.
- Attaching the error report (all cases seem to be documented therein).

This is making all my challenges ultimately unplayable... At this point I think I'll reinstall DoomRL in another folder, move my player info there, and see if this continues to reproduce.


EDIT: Reinstall did not help. Also I got this again in a normal level this time.
Looks like it's no more challenges for me... :(

I like Juggler and Finesse in their own right... And usually after the first two levels I'm so packed full of mods that I feel I have to race for Whizkid or I'd have to just throw them on the ground, a criminal waste. I often can't get these levels fast enough and end up walking around with 3-4 mods and nothing good to use them on.

The Ultimate Doom ones are nice, but I'm frankly shocked no one is using the music from Doomsday. Their remakes have got to be the best I've ever heard of any game, ever!

I'm not sure how one can get them without downloading and unpacking Doomsday - not that doing that is such a bad idea, either.

You already CAN unload two BFGs in a row with Juggler. You just need to hold them on both slots. I stop doing this sort of thing with shotguns when I start getting Exotics.

Your suggestion is good, though another option is to simply let exotics bind to whatever is closer - Blasters on 2, Assault Shotguns on 4, etc.

You're forgetting that this lever always puts the "you feel that smell?" message at the beginning of the level. In other words, you have a way of knowing on which levels to avoid pulling levers, this risk doesn't carry into all other levels. Just like I always pull all levers on Humid levels to flood the place and drown corpses and damage tiles.

You know, like Megasphere.  In addition, the Backpack could also give you small amounts of every type of ammo (ala the original game), inventory space notwithstanding, as to have a purpose once it's already been obtained a first time.  Maybe half a slot of each (including the Backpack's space, so 70 12mm, 7 rockets, etc).  Since exotics now exist, and Megasphere looks just like an exotic, I was hoping that Backpack could be reorganized as to allow for the possibility of AoMr or AoSg players to get that extended space.

Alternatively, limit it to floors 26-100 on A100 as a way for Centurial players to get one.

Agree with every single word on this. Shouldn't be too hard to implement, either.

I've experienced this with enemies - a direct rocket hit throws them around, but does little to no damage. When three direct rocket hits make a Hell Knight barely wounded, you know something's amiss...

My strategy is to juggle shotguns - walk around with two normal shotguns and juggler, lots of finesse, combat shotgun and double shotgun at the ready. It's enough to kill anything short of a Baron, and I can usually hold my own against those too with enough cover. Last time I took Shottyman during AoSh I ended up regretting it. Though I guess I seriously needed Army of the Dead for that Cybie... Ended up nuking him instead.
This is the 0.9.9 .mortem from that run, you can see my build... A pity the nuking killed my score too.

Note it's H|YAAM and I didn't even take Rel before the last level - didn't need it. I had enough loaded shells around to not need to reload anyplace unsafe. And if somebody bothered me in the middle of reloading, well, I could always juggle into something that could kill them instantly.

I like this last concept despite being a Finesse-freak myself. One thing you didn't mention though is with Finesse blocked, you can't take Whizkid - which means you'll need exotics/uniques to stay competitive over time with this strategy.

I've figured out the phase device trick on my own pretty easily... But I assumed it was a workaround. I'm actually pretty disappointed to find out there's no cleverer way in :-/

This requirements change is actually the one 0.9.9.1 change I have a gripe with, for a couple of reasons. One is petty: I like Juggler a LOT, and the new requirements make it harder to combine the two. The second is more general though - this essentially makes Fireangel shotgun-only, whereas before it was open to all: Reduces the possible viable strategies. That's generally in my book as a Bad Thing.

On another petty note, I don't even like to take Shottyman when I'm playing AoSh, much less any other time.

Almost forgot a final twist of irony - I actually found a nuke halfway through, but my backpack was packed with useless crap and I decided I'd pick it up once I cleared the level... And actually FORGOT to.

I would have seriously hated myself had that last shot not taken him out...

Just give me a couple of pistols any day of the week.
That's my next run - UV|AoMr. Gonna try to nab me quite a few medals in one go...
