AoPc is all about luck, and this run was lucky enough. One mega problem is when enemies block the only door forward - you have to run around precariously dodging (hopefully) lots of shots while also hoping the enemy moves, or gets hit by friendly fire and dies.Only AoB remains to be won, an enormous giant that I cannot yet defeat.
The winning run starts at frame 7941 in the demo (use dosrecorder's shortcut keys to get their more quickly), the earlier time was some AoB and AoPc runs where I died rather quickly...
Also, oddly enough, this blows away all of my other attempts at winning with a low turn count.

I'm playing this game way too much. Oh well, enjoying my last week or so until classes start again. An early attempt at trying to win quickly, in-game time. There's probably some improvement to be made. Not taking the trip for the BFG saves a bunch of time, so will need to fight Cyberdemon with plasma, and some backup health. Never wore armor except for the final fight with Cyberdemon, as it slows player movement down.
Playing for low turncount develops bad habits for difficult modes like AoP and AoMs, though, as you just walk around corners carelessly rather than carefully peeking and spending turns in that way.
Demo available if anyone curious.

So to break up the frustration of N! AoB runs I've been trying to win in the lowest # of turns possible. At first I tried a rapid weapon build, and reached Cybie in about 8000 turns, but had no way of killing him. No BFG, no plasma rifle, and didn't hit close to hard enough with the chaingun and merely 4 traits to win, since I didn't have the luxury of picking up many medpacks along the way. After a few runs, it seemed that I would likely only gain 3 levels in my rush to the Phobos Arena, so how best to allocate 4 traits? Back to pistols, actually! Son of a Gun is nice in that not only does it up the rate of fire, but also increases damage, which is pretty important since Cybie has a lot of natural armor. But even then you can't deal damage quickly enough relative to the damage it deals to you, so I ended up needing a fortunate situation where I could fire rockets at the wall next to him while hiding behind a pillar.
Demo available upon request, I don't want to take up too much space on the webserver with less impressive runs, although this one is a bit unique.

It might seem at first that AoDD is just a slightly different rapid weapon run, but when you get down to it, it plays out with some significant differences.First, when you start out, your to-hit bonus is actually pretty inadequate until perhaps level 4 or even 6, so after a few chaingun runs that terminated early, I tried using shotguns. However, those runs didn't get past midgame, I can't seem to manage shotguns mid/late game on N! as the single target damage per second is rather low compared to rapid weapons and even pistols (although I can theoretically see how it can work with Berserker.) So quickly I figured out the trick - play it out with a combat shotgun early on, then switch to chainguns and the like once you have enough to-hit bonus.
However, you can never afford Cateye on AoDD (if you went EE->EE->CE, you'd have no hitting power) so playing without it was an adventure. Since you can't see farther than enemies, it's very difficult to ensure you don't walk into a pack of them, which really hurts. With chainguns, often you don't have too much ammo to spare to fire off into space, so you can't afford to test enemy locations that way.
Having that extra health probably made a difference though, and it allowed the same medpacks to go a lot further.
Malek's armor (or any armor with 100% durability) is still pretty fragile. Simply spawning in a room with 2 Cacos and 1 Archvile (with sight of those Caco corpses) and 1 Mancubus in the next room was enough to destroy it.
Cyberdemon got the first shot off on me, which is rare, but in this case the lack of Cateye made the difference, since it happened that it spawns in a place where there was no cover between us. The extra health went a long way in the fight though. I could shoot three times from the open before needing to take time to heal, which is something that doesn't occur normally.
Only N! AoPc and AoB left (the AoD win wasn't notable)! I hope I beat them soon!

I did it! RNG gave me a few more medkits this time around - still less health compared to AoMs, though. A unique generated in the chained court but I didn't have a rocket launcher to nab it. Did find my favorite special levels this time around.Pain elemental caves = true pain - burned off a ton of power cells (BFG) and medpacks trying to get through. I don't encounter these that often, but when I do, yikes.
I did overcharge most of my plasma rifles this time around before facing cyberdemon - but I had a lot of spare power cells this time around so I didn't need to worry about wasting cells, and sure enough, cybie spawned right in front of me, so it was a good thing I did.
Now only 4 more challenges to go on N! ... AoD, AoDD, AoB, AoPc... I still don't know how I'll do the last two - so my deathcount has gone up by 100's because of short AoB runs.

Arrrgh! So close! Entered the fight with Cyberdemon with 40% health and no medpacks. And Cyberdemon spawned close to me with no cover in between - so I had to run for cover right off the bat, taking some splash damage along the way. I even let off a full plasma rifle salvo at it point blank when it was 'mortally wounded', but it wasn't enough. No uniques were generated, and somehow I missed all my favorite special levels. Or is the generation of special levels different in AoP?
Next time if I again have low health and no medpacks before Cyberdemon, I'll probably go in not wearing armor - I need all the movement speed I can get, and a few points of protection won't help much against the hard hitting, single shot rocket.
Angel of Purity is harder than Angel of Masochism. Before playing it extensively, it seemed on paper not as bad - you have access to all those medpacks! But medpacks aren't easy to obtain - often the enemies which pick them up use them up. In AoMs, the player gains levels somewhat regularly, and gets supercharged, so perhaps around 10 (or a bit more) supercharges throughout a full game, although you no longer have any other healing.
In AoP - no supercharges, so you never exceed 100% health, and most likely you won't even come across 6 large medpacks, and not that many smalls either. Also - no berserk or invulnerability, no computer map, no ARMOR SHARDS either. So health is even more scarce than AoMs, and no 'rambo mode' available.
Playing AoP makes you realize how essential powerups are - moreso than medpacks! Enemies can take away and consume your medpacks, but cannot take away your health globes and supercharges. A fortunate berserk lets you plow through dangerous crowds.

Slowly working myself towards Legend rank.
Actually I've already gotten the wins needed for Blade->Legend, but I don't have the wins for General->Overlord, nor Overlord->Blade. I'm not sure how I'll win AoB for the latter.
AoLT on N! isn't as easy as I expected. Despite having access to all powerups and all pickups, you run the risk of running out of ammo easily. I had to run from enemies that didn't drop ammo rather than kill them despite it being within my power, just to conserve ammo. It feels like a luxury playing on other modes and carrying around 800+ 10mm rounds, 200+ power cells, and 20 rockets, but you can't stock up like that on AoLT, so if you run into a crowd of enemies that don't drop ammo, you can easily run down what ammo you had.
At floor 24, I was wondering what I'd use against Cyberdemon. I even went as far as to pick up a double shotgun that was lying around and 12 rounds with it, then remembered the 100 power cells in my BFG, thank goodness. Unloading those, they supplied my plasma rifle for the win. "Damage per inventory slot" is now a new metric. 100mm bullets? Each one does perhaps 3.5 + 3 damage average (ignoring misses), so 650 damage per slot. Power cells? 7.5 per shot, 375 per slot. Of course ultimate ammo efficiency involves pistols, since per bullet they hit rather hard. Using power cells with your BFG is horrendously inefficient against single targets. 40 cells for 45 average damage? Those 40 cells could do 300 average damage before inaccuracy with a plasma rifle.
I took the third level of eagle eye, I think it made a difference. Especially with ammo so precious.
No uniques. Something spawned in an Arachnotron cave level, but it wasn't worth the risk. Something also spawned in the vaults, but I was never planning to attempt it (never picked up a rocket launcher), it was just a closer set of stairs.

Discussion / Shotgun strategies
« on: August 04, 2009, 00:54 »
So when I play around with shotguns at higher difficulty levels, either I simply play as I always do with other weapons (fire from places where enemies can't fire at me) and run out of shells, or I try zigzagging towards them (for the dodge bonus) to hit them at closer range and eating a lot of hits, then dying.
How do you guys do it?
How exactly does enemy accuracy work? The same way as the player's accuracy?
How exactly does movement, sidestepping, and Hellrunner affect whether or not an enemy's shot hits?

Discussion / Ranking the Uniques/Artifacts (spoilers ahoy!)
« on: August 03, 2009, 23:33 »
Let's discuss how useful you find the various Uniques and artifacts. Here's my take:
Top Tier:
Blaster - never need to worry about ammo (go ahead and store another 5 medpacks!), fires frighteningly fast - so good that if you find one, it's worth changing to a pistol build if you aren't doing one already (I'm also rather sentimentally attached to it since it helped me get some of my milestone wins. If I were to be objective, this would probably be 3rd best, and the spear in its current form best.)
Necroarmor - an immense amount of protection which repairs itself twice as quickly as Malek's. Speed boost, rather than penalty like most armors. If you play carefully, you'll never lose this armor. It's also useful no matter what build you do. (Note that higher protection will result in less damage to the armor as well.)
Longinus Spear - +6 armor on top of everything else? You're pretty frick'n invincible (rumor has it this is getting nerfed)
Very Nice:
Phaseshift boots - movement speed is so essential when facing monster hordes. This is top tier if you don't manage to find any boot mobility mods (Actually I'm seeing fewer boot mobility mods nowadays, I must have been lucky in my earlier games)
Missile launcher - having a magazine of 4 is much more useful that it looks to most people. Rather than having to spend precious seconds to reload between every shot, you can fire four in a row (each more quickly than a regular launcher's single shot), then take cover and load everything back up. This makes a huge different in confrontations with crowds or strong enemies. The added accuracy means that using it on individual targets is much more of a sure thing than with other rocket launchers. Also useful for all builds
Trigun - pretty fast firing, and hits HARD - take reloader instead of son of a bitch (on top of son of a gun)
Malek's armor - sort of like Necroarmor, but weaker. And it gets destroyed much more easily, it's possible that you'll lose it in a sticky situation. Works with all builds
Angelic armor - strong, with no drawbacks. Doesn't self-repair, though
Nice and useful:
Beretta - if you have a pistol build, I think tri-shot works the best if you have a decent amount of ammo in your backpack
Pancor Jackhammer - A double shotgun's damage, but with a combat shotgun's characteristics, and can shoot three times before reloading! Be careful not to run out of ammo though! It works as a secondary weapon even for non-shotgun builds. (Triggerhappy does NOT function with it - I found out the hard way.)
Phaseshift Armor - Speed boosts are key. If you're able to keep your armor intact, this is probably "Very Nice" (and with all the AoMs I've been playing, I've gotten a lot better at not taking damage, and thus preserving my armor as well)
Anti-freak Jackal - with both son of a gun/bitch, you can dig really precise holes through walls. No slouch at dealing damage either, it hits rather hard and is great against clumps. But often it'll destroy some of the stuff you wanted to pick up.
Assault shotgun - a more powerful combat shotgun that reloads a lot more quickly
Gothic boots - an excellent substitute for envirosuits, saving all that inventory space, useful for all builds
Nuclear BFG - most of the time when I use the BFG I shoot 3 shots in a row (to clear out vile et al clumps), so this doesn't act as a substitute for those situations. But having a single BFG shot available without cost every so often is still useful
Nuclear plasma - weaker shots, but free. Free means a lot when it comes to power cells
Minigun - unlike others, I think it does do well with a chaingun build - but you can't use it all the time, or you'll run out of ammo (and sooner than you expect)
Baron, Gothic Armor - can be useful in situations, but the speed penalty hinders running away when it matters
Butcher's Cleaver - If you found it with a melee build (pre-spear), more power to you
Meh:
Hell staff - random teleports when playing Nightmare are incredibly dangerous. I don't even bother to pick up vanilla phase devices anymore. On easier difficulties, this is probably "Very Nice"
Railgun - it's not good for dueling monsters in range (its damage per second is subpar), and it's not efficient for hitting things out of range or in crowds (the BFG is far better) - I only pick it up to get it noted in the mortem, and for the cells. Dervis's demo shows that he doesn't take it either, so I'm not alone in this respect.
BFG 10k - The first shot knocks back the target you were aiming at and often the next 4 miss. It's worse than a BFG9000
Revenant's Launcher - I'd rather have a vanilla rocket launcher, usually I can find a reload mod to attach to it. I suppose if your build had zero eagle eye this might come in handy when using the rocket launcher to engage individual targets at range. I suppose you could also use it in rare situations where you're able to aim the rocket to hit what you want while not destroying desired items on certain tiles.
???:
Dragonslayer - (I figure it's excellent, but I've never actually tried it out. Maybe it has hidden effects that make it amazing or totally awful. It doesn't have an armor bonus like the spear, though, so I'd take the +armor spear over it any day if it doesn't have any hidden effects.)

Man, AoMs on Nightmare has all of the challenge and almost none of the offsetting benefits (no double strength small medpacks or healing globes, only double berserk and invulnerability globe duration, the latter which I found none!). Did get the second best unique though (Necroarmor), which helped a lot for the win. First time in ages I actually appreciated having the Gothic boots - made damage floors into 1 hp affairs, which was important with every point of health essential. After a few shots, I'm really thinking that the third level of Eagle Eye would help - I still see perhaps a good third of my chaingun/plasma shots miss.
Floor 17 was pretty precarious - after lots of effort chipping away a dangerous horde, the number of monsters didn't feel like it was going down and I lost a lot of my health in the process. End up risking a homing phase device and luckily the exit area was safe. (Had I known it was safe I would have used it a lot earlier, but you never know with monsters everywhere on Nightmare.) I was actually reduced to 1hp midway through the next floor! At that point it wasn't safe to stand at a corner to fire, so I spent precious power cells to arc the bfg around a corner instead, giving me enough experience to bump me to the next level and the all-important healing! I ended up running out of ammo altogether on that floor (and I had 550 cells in inventory + 170 in my weapons the floor before, and some 10mm ammo to boot) and had only 17 rockets left, no 10mm, no power cells in inventory. I even had to unload the 90 cells in my BFG to supply my plasma rifle in a last ditch attempt to clear an area of enemies so I could pick up the captain droppings (10mm ammo).
When playing, and opening a door to see a clump of viles/mancubi or revenants/etc - you just sigh, close the door, and run around for another path, hoping that the stairs are in the new direction in which you head. This happened more than a few times this run. It's not like Ao100 where you're fully powered up, fully stocked with all the ammo and medpacks you need. (Of course, the Ao100 monster clumps are a lot bigger, but you have a fighting chance taking them on, you can heal when you take stray shots.)
Cyberdemon spawned in the open in front of me, so no chance to take cover and shoot around a corner. Thankfully I had enough health and ammo to win the slugging match.
Just Angel of Berserk left...I don't think I know how to play that, though.

Bug Reports / Dying in AoRA -> "nuked himself"
« on: August 03, 2009, 00:39 »
No big deal, but whenever you die in AoRA (and the nuke goes off afterwards), the mortem states that the player nuked himself, despite dying from another cause. This also increments the counter as well.

AoMs is truly unforgiving. "Oops, I stepped around a corner and ate a few shots...now I'm at 25% health. And I'm only 10% towards my next experience level." With no forgiveness of mistakes (health recovery), you have to make sure you don't make mistakes, two mistakes are enough to sink you. I'm definitely a more careful and more effective player after playing a bunch of AoMs runs. Don't step around blind corners. Be very careful when approaching open doors. Run away when you meet enemies you can't take down quickly enough in the open.
I'm also finally a rapid weapon user. Despite being rather attached to pistols, with experience I've finally seen the effectiveness of the chaingun and especially the plasma rifle. The latter blows pistols out of the water in terms of damage per second, for the same amount of traits. One benefit of this build is the ability to get Cateye much earlier (I wonder how I'll play without it in the next version!). I took Blade's word to not take more than 2 levels of eagle eye, but I still noticed a lot of shots missing. I'm starting to feel that the 3rd level would be worth it, I need to test it out.
With that said, what a bounty of Uniques from the RNG. I've never had a game remotely CLOSE to this one in the number of Unique spawns. There was even a unique on floor 24, but I didn't look for it, I already had my BFG I planned to fight the Cyberdemon with, and soon after levelling up, I took the stairs.
Thanks to the unique drops - I actually used every weapon type at different times in the game to kill enemies. I actually liked the Minigun, despite what others say about it. I used it a lot until I ran out of 10mm ammo (which is probably why everyone dislikes it, I suppose). I'm starting to like the phaseshift (not planeshift, why do I always call it that?) armor more and more when I find it. Perhaps I'm getting better at not taking damage, so my armors last longer than they did in the past. The Jackhammer came in handy when I didn't want to use up power cells, but had also run out of 10mm ammo. In particular, its knockback is really nice, but if you use it at range, you run out of shells quickly. In other games when I find it early and focus primarily on it, I always run out of shotgun shells. Hell staff - I used to really like it, but nowadays I don't bother with regular phase devices at all, so it has no value for me. Perhaps it's nice at lower difficulty levels where using a phase device is more likely to get you out of trouble than into more trouble. Railgun - I don't know if others think the piercing is nice, but if I wanted to hit more than one enemy, I'd just use the BFG. The railgun takes too long to fire and too long to reload relative to the damage it outputs. Missile launcher is actually really nice, with a magazine of 4 and a relatively quick fire time, you can peg a lot of enemies before taking cover to reload - I could probably have used it more and used the BFG less to save some power cells.
The waffling around in the inventory late in the game was me looking at weapon stats and trying to decide (calculate) which weapon to use against Cyberdemon. Raw average damage output per second from the Minigun (and the damage-modified plasma rifle) was actually theoretically higher than the BFG (when including the 3 SoaB), when considering reload times. But these two weapons weren't guaranteed to hit, and really had their edge taken away by protection, so BFG was the optimal choice. That's why I took reloader as my last trait, to reduce the time to reload the BFG. A level of Tough as Nails probably wouldn't have been that beneficial against the hard hitting single shot attack that Cyberdemon has. When it actually came down to the fight, the Cyberdemon never even got a shot off. I just spotted it, ducked around a corner, and shot a couple BFG blasts around said corner and won.
I held onto a few envirosuits all game in case I wanted to cross damage floors, but I never ended up using it - the one time I did cross a damage floor I forgot about it. It was only one tile, though.
An idea: perhaps even if medpacks and powerups don't heal, have them reset your 'tired' status? It could add a little bit of strategy to AoMs.

Discussion / How exactly does accuracy work?
« on: July 30, 2009, 18:35 »
Even though I have a rough idea about the impact of accuracy in the game*, how exactly is the number used to determine whether a shot hits or not?
Also, when things are not spotted, is the accuracy number simply halved before use?
* (+1 = about half your shots miss, +4 = most of your shots hit, +8 = almost every one of your shots hit)

Requests For Features / More variety in Ao100 levels
« on: July 29, 2009, 23:57 »
I rather enjoy playing Ao100 (and DoomRL, of course), but the levels after 25 are pretty...repetitive.
Now I understand the basis of it was no special levels, but it would be interesting if there was more variety and different situations. Right now it's just "hope the RNG doesn't spawn me in a room surrounded by dangerous monsters" (or pain elemental caves), and "slowly methodically handle the same monster mix for a lot of levels in a row"
Why don't we have the monster mix change more often? As long as there's still a distribution of former captains and sergeants (and perhaps arachnotrons) to replenish ammo, things could be more interesting.
