Got it down to 8660 turns, and with rapid weapons, surprisingly.  On Hey, not too rough, an early chaingun (or combat shotgun) is not necessarily a sure thing, unlike nightmare, so the first trait pick is a crapshoot.  Sometimes choosing reloader would lead to a chaingun, sometimes choosing eagle eye led to a combat shotgun.  Planeshift boots really cut down on movement time though, so that saved a large amount of turns.

I want to be 100% sure that the one I linked to is the one you'll accept, since they describe vastly different possible builds.

The original one you linked to has super stats, but didn't allow for as much variety in builds.  The one I'm linking to now doesn't have inflated stats, but allows things like psyker Space Marines (Librarians and Grey Knights), although they're not as great at psychic powers as Imperial Psykers.

I ask this because I want to build a psychic power using character - I have a Imperial Psyker put together now that I'm rather enamoured with (and as it happens, is pretty different from Passionario's) but will put together a psyker Space Marine too in case it'll be a better fit with the party when my turn comes up.

So to break up the frustration of N! AoB runs I've been trying to win in the lowest # of turns possible.  At first I tried a rapid weapon build, and reached Cybie in about 8000 turns, but had no way of killing him.  No BFG, no plasma rifle, and didn't hit close to hard enough with the chaingun and merely 4 traits to win, since I didn't have the luxury of picking up many medpacks along the way.

After a few runs, it seemed that I would likely only gain 3 levels in my rush to the Phobos Arena, so how best to allocate 4 traits?  Back to pistols, actually!  Son of a Gun is nice in that not only does it up the rate of fire, but also increases damage, which is pretty important since Cybie has a lot of natural armor.  But even then you can't deal damage quickly enough relative to the damage it deals to you, so I ended up needing a fortunate situation where I could fire rockets at the wall next to him while hiding behind a pillar.

Demo available upon request, I don't want to take up too much space on the webserver with less impressive runs, although this one is a bit unique.

It might seem at first that AoDD is just a slightly different rapid weapon run, but when you get down to it, it plays out with some significant differences.

First, when you start out, your to-hit bonus is actually pretty inadequate until perhaps level 4 or even 6, so after a few chaingun runs that terminated early, I tried using shotguns.  However, those runs didn't get past midgame, I can't seem to manage shotguns mid/late game on N! as the single target damage per second is rather low compared to rapid weapons and even pistols (although I can theoretically see how it can work with Berserker.)  So quickly I figured out the trick - play it out with a combat shotgun early on, then switch to chainguns and the like once you have enough to-hit bonus.

However, you can never afford Cateye on AoDD (if you went EE->EE->CE, you'd have no hitting power) so playing without it was an adventure.  Since you can't see farther than enemies, it's very difficult to ensure you don't walk into a pack of them, which really hurts.  With chainguns, often you don't have too much ammo to spare to fire off into space, so you can't afford to test enemy locations that way.

Having that extra health probably made a difference though, and it allowed the same medpacks to go a lot further.

Malek's armor (or any armor with 100% durability) is still pretty fragile.  Simply spawning in a room with 2 Cacos and 1 Archvile (with sight of those Caco corpses) and 1 Mancubus in the next room was enough to destroy it.

Cyberdemon got the first shot off on me, which is rare, but in this case the lack of Cateye made the difference, since it happened that it spawns in a place where there was no cover between us.  The extra health went a long way in the fight though.  I could shoot three times from the open before needing to take time to heal, which is something that doesn't occur normally.

Only N! AoPc and AoB left (the AoD win wasn't notable)!  I hope I beat them soon!

Nightmare! / Re: [N!|71%|AoP|YAVP] with demo.
« on: August 26, 2009, 18:39 »
Thanks for the advice, Dervis.  I'm running AoB about 20/30 times a day average now (only takes 20/30 minutes since almost all the runs die off so quickly...), hoping to get it eventually.  I don't find it fun like the others because it depends so much on luck and there's less you can do if sticky situations come up, unlike in other modes (AoMr excepted) where often you can be clever with the items you have despite being in a bad situation.

Thanks for the encouragement, Mr_Dead.  I actually was pretty disappointed losing a run at Cybie, since it wasn't easy getting there.  But you reminded me if I did it once I can do it again.  Actually runs are a lot smoother now that I've learned a bit more on what not to do.

Crap that's a lot of lost souls to face without a BFG, rocket launcher or fast firing pistol!  The horror!

Even with all that protection (TaN, armor, berserk), when they hit those lost souls are going to do 1hp damage, and I see a lot of "The lost soul hits you." messages!

100% seems to negate the ideal way to win in AoB, making it pretty hard.  Good luck on your quest!

Pre-0.9.9 / Re: [M|AoMs|85%|YASD] The watchword is "Cyberdemon"
« on: August 26, 2009, 18:30 »
It's possible to fight Cybie with low health - especially since you had the BFG, ample cells, and didn't spawn in front of it with no cover in between.  Peek from behind cover to see in which direction it's approaching from (listen to its movement sounds too), then hide and fire the BFG around corners.

Pre-0.9.9 / Re: [E|95%|23|YASD] Too many plasma rifles...
« on: August 26, 2009, 18:26 »
Mmm, when a mancubus hits you, it hurts - did it hit you with more than one shot?

It's always so tragic seeing large medpacks in inventory in YASD mortems!

« on: August 26, 2009, 18:24 »
Imps are as dangerous as anything else when you're low on health, I don't feel embarrassed being killed by them even when on deeper levels.

Having a lot of HP is amazing, but have you considered other traits that might help you get 100% more easily?

Off Topic / Re: Dark Heresy, eh?
« on: August 26, 2009, 18:15 »
That's fine.  I'm perfectly willing to wait if it leads to a better game overall.  A few questions though.

When you refer to the supplements, do you mean these two:
http://www.darkreign40k.com/downloads/career-paths/tyranus-conclave-adeptus-astartes/download-2.html
http://www.darkreign40k.com/downloads/career-paths/dark-reign-presents-sisters-of-silence-mkii/download.html
Rather than the ones you linked?
The Space Marines one you linked seemed rather unbalanced - the stats were so much better than other characters and such, and the one I refer to also calls itself 'astartes', but uses the same homeworld stats as other characters.  The Sisters on you linked to leads to a broken link eventually, as well.

I'd also like to clarify using psychic powers outside of battle.  Can I theoretically use invocation before every psychic power use?  It seems to have no downside, except the risk for negative phenomena.  Similarly, using the minor power knack before any test outside of battle?

Before him 688 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 591 of those were killed.
12 of those were killed by something unknown.
32 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 31 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 22 souls claim to have killed him...
1 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
20 killed the bastard and survived.
1 showed that it can outsmart hell itself.

I did it!  RNG gave me a few more medkits this time around - still less health compared to AoMs, though.  A unique generated in the chained court but I didn't have a rocket launcher to nab it.  Did find my favorite special levels this time around.

Pain elemental caves = true pain - burned off a ton of power cells (BFG) and medpacks trying to get through.  I don't encounter these that often, but when I do, yikes.

I did overcharge most of my plasma rifles this time around before facing cyberdemon - but I had a lot of spare power cells this time around so I didn't need to worry about wasting cells, and sure enough, cybie spawned right in front of me, so it was a good thing I did.

Now only 4 more challenges to go on N! ... AoD, AoDD, AoB, AoPc...  I still don't know how I'll do the last two - so my deathcount has gone up by 100's because of short AoB runs.

Are you positive?  I'm pretty sure I've observed more knockback when shooting pistols once I've gotten 3x SoG, 3x SoB.

Let's suppose you have SoaB 3 (but not Necroarmor - it'd probably be really rare to get two specific uniques in the same game)
2d2 = 3 average, so 6*3, 18 damage average, or 36 dps average
Now a regular vanilla chaingun with SoaB 3 - 1d6 = 3.5 average, so 6.5 * 5, or 32.5 dps average.

So compared to a chaingun, your weapon is marginally better (and yes the armor piercing adds a bit more too), but drains a rather large chunk of health.  Draining 1-4 health is actually pretty large, and the possibility of gaining 1 back doesn't offset the cost by much.

The way you've set things up I wouldn't even use it if I found it, a health penalty is a huge drawback, it needs a powerful benefit to make it worthwhile.  Furthermore, uniques are supposed to be superior to ordinary weapons, this one clearly is not.

And really, comparing it to a plasma rifle is the final straw.
1d8 = 4.5 average, so 7.5 * 8, or 60 average dps!
Even the new nerfed plasma at *6 is still 45 average dps, better than your design and with no health loss to boot.

Hrm, I checked again and moving into a water space takes 11 turns rather than 10 with no armor and no speed traits.  I was positive that when I checked earlier it was just 10 turns.

Or maybe it's a 5% penalty so it might have taken 10.5 turns which made it appear as 10 turns occasionally?
