Requests For Features / Assembled Mods

Rather than common, exotic, and unique mods, let's tweak the latter two a bit. Instead of hoping for a random drop, how about being able to turn 2-3 mods into an exotic, and (more) mods into a unique? Just mod an agility mod with a tech and maybe another agility. Bang, Sniper Mod.

This lets us have all assemblies rely on basic mods to be constructed. No worrying about if something will drop, just when - you're likely to get enough for at least one thing you want in a WK game.

Other thoughts that occurred to me:

This makes raising and lowering assembling quantity as easy as adjusting the basic mod economy.

Alternatively, mod and weapon assembly quality could be altered and the game could spawn mods more frequently, encouraging experimentation.

Another possible way of limiting use of this feature would be requiring a certain new basic mod type to drop - an 'assembler', I suppose, that you load with mods, rather than modding mods with other mods. This would have the side-effect of more complex mods that require pre-assembled mods possibly needing multiple assemblers.

Implement this and leave natural exotic/unique mod spawns in?

Another thing that strikes me as something that may have been pitched, maybe for DRL2. Should I donate already so I can see the dev stuff for myself?

It started as a random thought while dwelling on DoomRL challenge modes. A film-noir type of gameplay vaguely similar to Angel of Darkness: floors cloaked in shadows, with precious few light sources allowing you to get a fix on demons and perhaps letting you hide from their fire. Also, all chainguns become tommyguns, demons become classy dames and there are cigars and whiskey instead of powerups.

Then it sort of morphed into the simple idea of light levels. Doom was all about atmospheric lighting, and having zones of clear visibility for normal (or bonus) to-hit mixed with areas of darkness, where identification and even sighting could be hampered or rendered impossible, would be neat and interesting.

Here's suggestion number two, partly to avoid spamming the forum with threads and partly because I'm certain this has been suggested before, but the search function isn't being very reliable. Being able to break into a sprint is cool and useful, but it'd be nice if you could do it more than once and didn't either have to keep doing it until you got exhausted or 'get tired' with abnormal quickness... more like in real life, or Berserk! RL.

So far, DoomRL is all about speedruns or surviving to the end under certain circumstances.

That's fun, but sometimes I just feel like screwing around in a playground not quite as old-school, collecting toys and using them to mow down demons and collect even more toys on my way to level 50 and certain death at the hands of the end boss.

Would it be Another DoomRL2 Thing to suggest a mode of DoomRL that's less like Rogue and more like Angband or Tales of Middle Earth? Less a one-way plunge to hell and more an exploration of a vast military complex, perhaps with some locale persistence and the available fallback of a safe town to spend gathered currency on weapons and items (even if it's just a Dead Space-like kiosk)?

DoomRL is delightful. It's based on a game I love, and so far it's either added better things to the mix or people are at least talking about the not-so-good. It does get a few suggestions to fix what ain't broken, and this might be one of them, but it's only a thought I had.

A core part of both Doom and DoomRL is movement. In Doom... hell, you were moving all the time. I can't be the only one who strafes back and forth while waiting for a long elevator, or jams down the shift key and exaggerates circle-strafes in big fights. And in Doom, while you're moving, you're also almost always shooting.

I didn't really pay much attention before, since they're fundamentally different games and changing things now would mess with the balance, but now it kind of bothers me. In DoomRL, you have to stop to shoot your gun, and looking at it through the Doom lens, it feels a little like it breaks the flow.

How broken would it be if you could set a direction to walk, then automatically step in that direction regardless* of what your next action is, continuing to do so until your next action is a movement or change in direction? Yeah, it would totally change the game and make it a bunch easier, but I'd like to hear other people's take on it.


*except for sticking a chainsaw into something.

As far as I know, the way things currently are, moving towards a square occupied by an enemy with a gun equipped rolls for a fist attack, and if you score a kill, it's a kill for the gun.

Why not have fun with this?

Guns like pistols, shotguns, and rifles can all have close combat applications, and of course a Marine would be familiar with them - pistol-whipping, butt strikes and bayonets, to name a few examples. Why not give guns their own melee dice - nothing major, just more than 1d2+SoB/Brute. Combat knives could possibly be used to mod weapons (probably granting slightly less than straight-up knife damage). More damaging combinations and different dtypes could be applied in the event that something more exotic is assembled, like some kind of chainsaw gun laser bayonet.

Pistols - pistol whips would probably be fairly fast but do little damage.
Shotguns - normal speed and slightly more damage.
Rocket Launcher - these would probably pack the most heft.
Rapid weapons - depends. There are multiple types - smaller, handheld ones could be used similar to shotguns, and there are bayonet possibilities.
Heavier options - assault cannons, BFGs and miniguns may not be as useful in melee, so maybe default to fist or no melee attack.

It would be sort of neat if kills scored by gun-melee were counted separately, but eh.

This may also open up some fun chainsaw gun assembly possibilities. Not sure how all of this should interact with Berserker.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

This is with a technician and WK(2). The only reason I can think of that might have caused this is adding the first Agility mod without WK(2)...

The shotguns are a relic from pre-nano mod, when ammo for everything only seemed to get scarcer.
A lot of enemies ate a lot of rockets from offscreen this run.
Even more ate a lot of plasma.
...
Four of those corpses are arch-viles. The rest are all R-M-Pink/Red B.
The only thing passing for cover within sight of where Baird spawned (NW corner) got destroyed with the BFG because there was a VMR pack behind it.
Both cerberus armors (blue, P) died from over 50% in the final firefight.
So did every clip of every energy weapon, except the hyperblaster - the BFGs came out after the first volley or two.
Phases probably could have taken the place of those shotguns and potentially saved the run.
Those boots are cheap and great. I imagine they're the only thing left at ground zero...

I could have sworn I picked Dodgemaster at some point. Apparently not.

GH: Don't mind me, just fixing the tag.

First time through UV Hellgate barely scratched me, the Vaults were no problem, Shottyhead was great.
Then the ammo ran out right at the start of level 9.
Two shell boxes spawned.
Both, despite my best efforts, were blown up. (Really? Nearly half a second movetime and the mancubus gets a move when I step out of melee onto the box, and decides to shoot me?)
So, with a sigh, I ran the hell down and nuked my first UV Cybie.

I don't have any Shotgunner badges (somehow) so I decided to try a UV AoSh.
I hit that stupid alt-reload ammocan bug halfway through Hell's Armory.
The game was kind enough to spawn me back on level 10, stairs to Hell's Armory present.
Right next to a vault with a dozen cacodemons, plus a nearby revenant and mancubus.
Bad luck the second time through ate my handful of medkits, and I radar-shot through at 16%, only to mistype while aiming into the black, step out, and die.
Int(2) and enough ammo would have made this a first try UV win.

This bug.

p.s. well aware this build is sort of backwards, I wanted to see shottyhead in action.

I've killed JC twice in the past ~5 wins, once without taking a point of damage, and I'm fairly sure I did him at least once before 0.9.9.4.

Yet my mortems don't credit me for outsmarting hell. Was that line removed/conslidated with 'killed the Cyberdemon'?

Not too much to say about this run.
I was tempted to try the Mortuary, but I had two nuclear devices and plenty of armor already.
Sharpshooter is a beast with a high power weapon and Int(2). Or a Beretta... second game, second pistol build, second GCB of 0.9.9.4.
I'm particularly proud of the Lava Pits. I only had one envirosuit, but there was a phase buried under those arachnotron corpses and two invulns by the stairs...
I spent several minutes with JC and his summons before I got fed up and hit the button. (It was my only source of splash damage...)
Prepped ammo packs are still great. This time I was more mindful of their function, and it made for a ridiculous single-gun pistolier.
I'm glad nuking JC counts as a full win.

Is it intended behavior to be unable to switch to your prepared ammocan, so you can then equip a weapon instead?

edit: Guess what? I didn't realize you could take things off on the equipment screen. Still, allowing the player to switch to their ammocan and swap out directly might be convenient.

For my first game of the new version, I decided on just a standard game, Marine built to Bullet Dance.

The silliness began early:
- On the Chained Court, I forgot that I am forbidden to use rocket launchers on the Chained Court. This is why my boots are on level 9.
- Hell's Armory contained a few surprises. I did not know you could get schematics for things you already knew...
- Bullet Dancer could have come before half the barons in The Wall charged through my breach. I still have yet to use every rocket I find in a game, and yet in other playthroughs I've run out of every other ammo type.
- Right after Halls of Carnage (yawn), the Beretta. A decent gun for the build, though it barely saw more use than...
- Three BFGs and a missile launcher. Much of hell was spent blowing shit up instead of properly using a full six of the traits I bought.
- For a few levels, all I had was a plasma shield. It helped me derp right through Spider's Lair without ever going critical.
- I was a dunce in the Mortuary and still came out with less cells, less skulls, but much more armor and a little more health.
- On the other hand, I breezed through the Vaults. Revenant Launcher... :|
- Late in hell, phaseshift armor popped. In that former complex, I ignored a pair of phaseshift boots...
- JC died on accident. It turns out I had enough rockets to kill him while firing east in a fit of paranoia. I don't remember him being so... spammy.
- I like ammo packs.
- Total endgame damage taken: 0.
- Total rockets ignored or discarded: ~40 + one box.
- Total large med-kits carried for a few levels, then abandoned: at least ten.
- The piece de resistance.

Not pictured: Cyberdemon at almost dead. I got screwed up pistol-whipping him, since melee speed (obviously) isn't affected by SoG, and took a few hits I could have avoided. Even if my strategy had been perfect, I had to flip my pistol around when he was only mortally wounded, so...

Yes, those are 6 captain kills. Yep, I missed Hell's Armory, which probably would have given me all the ammo I needed. I spent most of the game hoping I could find some ammo to replace the stack of 12 large medkits I had found, and I ended up using most of those in slugmatches out in the open or against Cybie.

I rushed the last few floors and never found any nukes. One or two before Cybie, I saw a nuclear plasma rifle... checked my bullets, looked at the Arch-Vile and two Revenants on my tracking map, said 'screw it' and decided to take my chances with ~40 bullets.

In other rage news, BFG10K IN AOMR. If only it had been a Trigun, or even a Jackal.

I got back into Doom 2 the FPS again, and while playing through mods and such I noticed something of a discrepancy (lol) between the FPS and the Roguelike.

In Doom 2, Revenants have a habit of running right the hell up to you and punching your face in... but as far as I've seen in DoomRL, they like to hang back and abuse their undodgeable missiles and try to avoid melee. Was this a balance choice or something?
