Requests For Features / Re: The Wall
« on: May 22, 2011, 01:51 »
When The Wall is cleared by any means, it'd be cool if the hellish forces keeping it standing dissipate, thus making it crumble.

As a side effect, this would make Brick Silver slightly less reliant on luck and thus less annoying.

-- General ---------------------------------------------------

Before him 34 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 28 of those were killed.

And 1 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 5 souls claim to have killed him...
2 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
3 killed the bastard and survived.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Gothic boots and Lava Armor are a sweet-ass combo, and I blame them as much as the tactical shotgun and unwittingly killing crowds of sergeants around arch-viles for getting this far.

I didn't notice my boots had gotten so damaged until they broke on a lava square and I died the subsequent turn.

The level of Brute was taken in a panic, because I had the Cleaver and no ammo for anything. It turned out to serve me well on a couple of later occasions. If I could have done anything more, I would have remembered to swap to the Beretta more often and gotten Mancubus rank.

Had I gotten any further, this would have been a pretty cool no master traits run. I mad, but only a little mad. This is a roguelike, and my crushing stupidity is balanced by triumph at finally seeing some nightmare monsters.

Now HNTR seems kind of... easier.

33
At first, I thought it some odd glitch - the 'Jericho' message got printed twice upon starting blind jump #5 into UV Ao100.

Then, after pulling one lever and clearing the level, I went to pull the other one, got the same message, and stopped to think.

'Huh. Is this a bug or a feature?' No screenshots or proof, sadly, but it should be verifiable enough.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Meet Jean William, badass shotgun-toting frenchie. The Armory gave him the Jackhammer, and that and TaN(3) made him fear fearful things slightly less. The last few levels of hell were spent running from ridiculous amounts of greater demons, but...

The Mortuary was an amusing comedy of errors, as this is the second time I've ever made it past the first few arch-viles. (Last time was an unfortunate accident where I got too BFG-happy the floor before, and my 400 cells somehow all vanished, so I had no shots against the last arch-vile's army.) Like a drunken fool, Jean charged out the door, used one of the City of Skull's treasures, and... well, for half the fight was pretty much a tank. The rest was corpses raising and exploding, Jackhammering arch-viles into walls, and then spending a disbelieving minute or two hunting down a few demons.

Level 9, down to one stack of shells and hearing a revenant kicking around Jean didn't want to fight, he debated what to do near the stairs. Nearby was a computer map, and he had found a magic tunnel-to-JC-digging shovel in the Mortuary; all he needed was the legendary pair of Magic Shovelin' Gloves, and what do you know? They were nearby. But after Cybie, Jean realized a fatal flaw with his plan: shotgun drop-off. Even with MAD, JC wasn't taking damage fast enough, and Jean didn't jump down his throat fast enough to let the minions help acid him to death.

He probably could have used that phase device, but it might have just been prolonging the inevitable.

I'm glad it counted as a standard win, I suppose, but I wish I'd gotten Shottyman Silver. And that the Acid Spitter was a shotgun...

35
...so let me bite my enemies, or drink from pools of blood for some effect, but I haven't forgotten I'm berserk, so please stop reminding me.

The only reason I can think of for the berserk message after every action is to keep the player from 'remembering' what happened recently via the past messages command because their mind's too clouded with bloodlust. I don't have anything against the message, I just think the frequency could be toned down.

36
I'm sure most people have died at least once because there was a big wall right there when a mancubus shot at them. I honestly don't know why they shoot THREE clustered boomy shots when they shoot two in the source. The kill out of nowhere from 100% is very rogue-like and thus can be aggravating; as it stands I'm afraid to even engage Mancubi at all.

Does quicker movement speed cause less damage when moving on acid or lava? I'd think lighter feet would cause less contact, and I'd also think that if a marine isn't focusing on combat, he'd be incredibly motivated to get OFF whatever he's standing on and pick up his feet a little, especially if he's got protective boots buying him time.

Would a sophisicated weapon like a Revenant's Launcher (or a BFG10k?) come with a proximity warning if where you aim catches you in the radius? A meta-prompt that lets you change your mind about firing (or not) would be neat.

This isn't a cry to make the game easier, except maybe the Mancubi. Just some thoughts and suggestions. Any others?

Before him 33 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 30 of those were killed.
1 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 2 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

--------------------------------------------------------------

This run was so incredibly vanilla that I was afraid. Afraid I would not have the ubertech needed to plunge all the way into Hell's aorta (not quite the heart, after all) and kill the Cyberdemon. On the plus side, it kept me from getting cocky, thinking I could just mow everything down.

The only thing of note that dropped was armor and large medpacks. In both cases, at one point I found myself laden with 7 or 8 and weeping at having to leave one behind. Hardly any mods, one exotic besides the chainsaw (assault shotgun), no uniques until very late. I had barely enough for my speedloaders.

At the Hellgate, I had four homing phases... and got into a sticky spot with the Bruisers. It took all four to get out of line of sight, and the first three took me towards a wall, then towards the bruisers, then towards the same wall, nowhere near potential safety. The fourth at least dropped me near the exit.

The level before the Hell Staff (aww, not the Heretic weapon?), I think, was an Arachnotron cave. Three in LoS, another approached as I dove for cover, and a friend joined him when I decided one in LoS while searching for a chokepoint was better than three.

What choice did I have? I ran... And of course, by the time I reached the stairs they were all shooting me. "But Ander, however did you survive the flight?" I had entered with a Supercharge. 8)

In the middle of Hell, I almost ran out of ammo - oh, dear. Then a couple of captains spawned and set me up for the rest of the run.

And somehow I made it to Hell B9. A unique had spawned, but I had Gun Kata; I didn't care. I wouldn't have made it without three envirosuits and SoaG3 to blow away Barons; the only safe paths were blocked by lava. And by 'safe path' I mean 'not a huge room with a Mancubus in it'. He was probably camping the unique.

The Cyberdemon was about as easy as you'd expect with four stacks of 10mm and Dodgemaster. I only didn't get his head because DERP DERP I'M STUPID and just wanted to get it over with. I considered taking it to his Boss (I'm pretty sure I know how to get the 'invitation') but I just didn't have the hardware, and the obvious course of action would have left a bitter taste.

I won. By running away a lot, picking my battles, getting damn lucky staring down one of those Revenants, and finding a few well-placed invuls, I made it to the Cyberdemon and filled him with bullets.

Here I stand victorious. A short-time lurker who came back to DoomRL when it updated out of nowhere this winter and resolved not to register and post anything until finally beating the game. I'm glad to meet you all - you seem like quite a nicer community than I'm used to - and look forward to both future DoomRL updates and piling up the mortems in my newly-unlocked Ao100.
