So I needed a diamond for me to get to the next rank. I hate diamonds, you see. They're difficult and usually require me to play N! or AoRA, both of which I don't like (I don't even have Quartermaster Bronze yet).

So I sat down and took a look at the list of Diamonds. I'd already achieved Longinus Diamond and Scavenger Diamond, so the easy ones were out of the way, forcing me to do something hard. Damn.

I considered doing Arena Diamond briefly but that would require me to get 2 zerk packs next to the stairs on level 2 or something and I didn't feel like restarting infinity times or doing something kooky like AoB + AoLT with HR 1 + Fin 1 and somehow herding all the corpses in the middle and abusing dodge. Yeah, that's too much work.

So I remembered that Twodev used to use Ammochain before his weapon of choice was the Dragonslayer and it started magically appearing in his hands on dlevel 2. That, combined with AoLT's rather simple requirements of "Don't kill anything in melee" made it sound really appealing. Then I decided that if it's good enough for Twodev, it's good enough for me, so I dived straight into it.

Firstly, the actual play time was probably around 50 minutes as I went afk for a while during the middle of the run. I'm always constantly surprised at how quick N! runs are compared to other runs, even something like Berserker Gold can take me 3 hours or something.

Secondly, I decided to door camp for the first few levels to try and get my way up to ammochain as soon as possible to actually make this challenge doable. Dlevel 2 was okay with that, managed to clear it, but then DLevel 3 decided to start shitting on me.

I spawned in a big open space with 2 hell knight packs, and I was only level 3 with a shotgun and a chaingun. I mean, come on! I eventually worked my way down to dlevel 4 with 1 medikit left on 40% hp...

And spawned in a big open space surrounded by barrels, Cacodemons and Hell knights. Oh boy. I had nowhere else to go except for backing myself into a corner. Luckily I managed to snag 2 stacks of shells the level before and that combined with Reloader 2 + AoLT bonus meant that I was able to blow up a hell knight and 3 cacodemons to make my escape just by sitting in the corner and shooting. Yeah. Eventually I managed to get through that level. Levels 5, 6, and 7 were all maze levels meaning I either had to burn through ammo or medipacks or rockets - none of which I had. Luckily on dlevel 6 I managed to shotgun shovel a former commando over into a corner and camped him for his delicious cells, which saved my butt.

My strategy for the Anomaly was one of the poorer tactical decisions i've made. Once again, I underestimated the speed and bulkiness of Nightmare Demons - I keep thinking that they're more like Barons when they're really like 140% speed 80/3 munchers of death. Grabbing everything and dashing for it got me through relatively without incident, but I paused in front of the wall that opens up to the Bruiser Brothers to try and get a few kills since I was only about 30% exp away from Ammochain. Yeah....

I did manage to get through with no medipacks on ~70% hp though. Then the RNG threw me into this.



That wasn't too bad but it could have been a deathtrap if it wasn't on AoLT, ironically. Managed to get through it with no heals only to be confronted by an arena level. That wasn't pretty.

The plan originally was to go Fin-Fin-WK to stick some agility mods on my Plasma Rifle, but finding the Laser Rifle on dlevel 13 or so made that unnecessary - a help, but at that stage I could have still pulled off the win without it.

At the entrance to Limbo I had 2 phase devices, 2 medipacks and a stack of cells. I considered going in there to try and get the nuclear BFG for the full win, but didn't risk it and traded my phases for cells. Turns out that on level 22 I found a thermie, invunerability and a homing phase, so I decided to go for the win.

I was kinda nervous going into JC even though I had a t-modded Laser rifle with Fin/Ammochain/AoLT. If I lost to JC, i'd also lose my Lightfoot Diamond - so it was all or nothing. I did get socked by a rocket to the face because I messed up the timing but it didn't hurt too much and apart from that I just sat there pumping plasma into him. Eventually I came out the other side with my Veteran Diamond.

Not only is this pretty remarkable (from my skill as a player) because of all the close calls with nothing to fall back on and lack of powerups (I had...2 berserk kits and 1 invunerability the whole game, and that came on Dlevel 22), but it's a double diamond. Apart from the easy diamonds (such as Arena, Longinus and Scavenger), I never thought i'd be getting a single diamond, let alone 2 in one run.

First, the story of this mortem. I nearly died and ragequit three times in this game. First was on the Unchained Court:



But I survived with a Tech medipack and did some happy gibbing. Still, no zerk on the Chained Court.

The next was in the Halls of Carnage, where the lava seemed to accelerate right before I got the BFG. At this stage I had BBFF all lined up and it got to the column before the BFG. I was literally 1 second away from the BFG getting eaten up. I nearly had a heart attack, because this is the first run I had the biggest fucking gun on.

Lastly was after I finished Cybie with said gun and most of my rockets. Then I got dropped into hell level 1 right next to a vile pack with little cover. With only a stack of shells to protect me.

Anyway, the real reason I did this was to see how good MSc was lategame.

First of all, I got my firestorm packs by stupid dumb luck. MSc did nothing to assist me in that regard. I didn't get a disassembleable unique despite getting 3 uniques and only got regular mods from exotics. If it wasn't for stupid dumb luck I wouldn't have had my mortuary clear/full win, since I gibbed most of the corpses with the gun.

MSc only really seemed to be a waste of a master trait the further I got into the game, ironically enough. Sure, I got to make some nice things like a Focused double shotgun and a full set of A modded tactical armor that I wouldn't have gotten to make otherwise, but those didn't really affect the game as much as something like MMB, MAc, or something would. In addition, you're pretty much stuck between sucking earlygame (going straight for the trait) or putting it off, in which case you either have to give up disassembling exotics/uniques (defeating the purpose of it) or carry them around and take up valuable inventory space - meaning you're at a further disadvantage. Unless you get lucky and get a unique that gives you a nano pack which you're more likely to simply find on the ground, and you also happen to have the mods for something else, MSc gives you literally no advantage - and with the exception of something like a Nanomanufacture Missile Launcher, nothing is going to give you a free ticket.

Something really needs to be changed about it.

Discussion / Master trait discussion 2: Scavenger

So I was doing a little ruminating on Scavenger.

Here's the trait, for anyone unfamiliar with it:



What do you think of it? Pros and cons? Do you think it's fine as it is now?

After having used it in a UV Ao100 100% run, i'd have to say that the trait itself could do with a little tiny bit of a buff. Ao100/AAo666 probably brings out the potential of this trait and it really only makes getting some of those assemblies a little bit easier (1/6 of getting a Nano/Onyx pack from a generic ranged unique? May as well get a Nano mod from the floor.). It's not as much as a buff as some of the other master traits such as Ammochain, Malicious Blades and Sharpshooter, for example. I mean, it's great if you find a nano pack earlier on like I did, or find a unique that gives a guaranteed mod like I also did, but with that level of RNG luck the game might as well give you a Dragonslayer on a MMB run.

There's two things I was thinking. The first is renaming it something like Engineer (MEg) and giving you an additional mod slot for Assemblies (On top of WK 2). That'd probably be enough of a buff and would give you a little more strategic depth or something like that. The effect would apply to assemblies made before taking the master trait as well.

The second thing would be simply increasing the rate of a useful modpack from exotics/uniques (letting exotics give you a chance at any random unique modpack and changing exotics to 1/3 nano/onyx and 1/6 sniper/firestorm) and increasing the number of things you could disassemble. (perhaps allow melee uniques/exotics? certain armors? You could certainly pull something from the Cybernetic armor, for example..)

I finally found that nano pack.

Elephant gun was really the kicker. Plasmatic shrapnel double shotty, super shotgun, whatever. I barely used them. Elephant gun is the shotgun of champions.

Assembled the Plasmatic then found super shotgun on the next level. Way to kick me, RNG 8D

Nano pack was found rather luckily and I had to do some shenanigans to save it from being obliterated by V. Didn't have an assembly for it and didn't find the mods, so I just stuck it onto a red armor close to the end. Didn't really need it.

Anyway, this was much easier then I thought - I just booted up DoomRL during a study break and decided to go for Shottyman Platinum for lulz. Ended up with the badge.

Probably wouldn't want to try this again without a lucky combat shotgun find or the elephant gun though.

Got through Hellgate with the berserk from the Chained Courts - Thank you for teaching me the way of being a pussy, Thomas.

So this is kind of weird. I'm getting this wimpy message when I shoot my elephant gun of pwnage, but you know...it's a shotgun.

I'm thinking this issue stems from having a chainsaw in my prepared slot and Juggler. Unless this is how it's supposed to function?

Instead of continuing to talk about this in the small questions thread, I thought this might deserve it's own topic:

I said we need more melee bases. The only normal melee base is the knife. For pistols, only one is the pistol. Shotgun has 3 different bases, and chainfire has 2.

And I see more Shotgun/Chainfire random specials than pistol or melee.

Technically unarmed is a melee base too, since Sunrise Iron Fist.
But personally I wouldn't mind having a better non-unique/exotic melee weapon that's a step up from the combat knife. Maybe like a...sword or something.

I suppose this discussion could be extended to pistols somewhat, although they seem fine to me.

So I gave MSc a whirl. It was quite disappointing, actually. Even with a bunch of exotics the only nice thing I really got was the BFG10k - which was hardly an asskicker, I ended up disassembling it to get the guaranteed Nano pack on the next level. And that was the only thing that came from MSc, everything else was pretty much picked up off the floor. Disappointing but probably useful for AAo666. :\

At first I found a nano pack and made the mother in law on dlev 14. I thought I was pretty much set - but it found little use and It ended up in the back seat after my Nanomanufacture plasma rifle (F) hit the stage. Ended up blasting through most of the game like that.

Everything was pretty much easy vile packs up until dlev 74 (relativly speaking - nanomanufacture rocket launcher and plasma rifle easy) - then I got jumped by 3 cyberdemons and 2 shamblers. OH GOODNESS WHY. My Cerebus armor saved my butt that level but yeah, it wasn't pretty.

The next few times I got jumped by cyberdemons I instantly jumped on IRC spamming thomas going "THOMAS SAVE ME PLS". Once he pointed out a berserk pack that I missed because I was too busy panicing about being cornered by 2 cyberdemons with minimal hp, and another time he told me to just suck it up. He saved me twice. That's what those saves were.

Apart from that, pretty unremarkable because I didn't get anything awesome. Nanofibre P probably broke the game - and as you can see towards the end, I pretty much ended up taking random traits.

So another non-N! platinum down.

Well, that was an interesting experience. Took me a few tries to get past the Chained Court Hard but once I was past that it was pretty clean sailing - minus 1 stupid death due to 98% accurate brute 3 missing 4 times in a row and consuming all of my resources and another where I spawned on level 6 next to a few commandos. That was not fun.

Cleared vaults with Azarel's Scythe Altfire - for some reason, despite doing 20 plasma damage to everything on the level it actually took 5 shots to clear it, one monster was left alive after 4 bursts. There was a unique in there but I didn't get to see it. (can't open the middle one without staff/phases...) Was probably the Dragonslayer taunting me.

The level straight after that was a bit of a struggle - I had just taken Finesse before the vaults and using 1 more altfire then expected put me at odds with what to expect so I crawled out of that level with about 10% hp surrounded by viles and mancubi in a maze. A little bit of patience and cover got me through it, killing them one at a time (And plus, with red armor P and zerk, there wasn't much I had to worry about 1 vs 1, even on that low hp).

I paniced a little bit right at the end deciding on whether to go for another full win, because 1) I'm scared of JC (sshhh) and 2) I wasn't totally sure about the nuclear BFG's overcharge - whether it was instant or 10 seconds. I checked the wiki and barely reassured, went with my gut and overloaded it to be rewarded with one joke of a JC fight. I think I poked him like 5 times or something and he was dead, I didn't even see any other minions apart from the few lost souls.

The run was so long because I left my computer going all day - only to find out that when i'd come back my graphics card had gone berko while I was gone and everything was messed up. Luckily I left my doomguy 1 tile north of the stairs after the Armoury and saved (then fixed it). Ideally I would have liked to have done it with no saves...

Anyway, first diamond and yet another non-N! platinum down. I feel like I accomplished something today. Apart from lack of sleep.

This is harder then I thought. At this stage, without any method to tank cybie - unless you get lucky enough to make a fireproof armor after the anomaly, which is difficult because you can't hoard modpacks, and even then - I'm kinda stuck here. This is like the umpteenth time i've died at Cybie attempting this and I can't seem to get the build right. I mean, i could probably get everything if I entered every level and got 100% kill rate which would be enough to get me Dodgemaster, but failing that i'd have to give up something else again.

Hard Chained court and Deimos labs is suicide as far as I can tell going for platinum without any kind of emergency healing for the shamblers/after the arena master, i've always had trouble with those things. With the arena master you could leg it back to the middle to get a zerk pack if you left one there but then you'd get the "bruised by a Baron" message. And the shamblers seem to be crazily accurate - If you can't take cybie, you can't take them.

So yeah. Temporarily ragequitting this challenge because it's not particularly hard and I still can't beat cybie. I might give it a go later though.

As for why I was using the combat shotty? Well, I was too close to use the rocket launcher and even with the A-mod, I kept missing. Do I have no idea how to do Cybie in 0.9.9.7? Yup, no idea.

Discussion / Whizkid, Modpack Rarity, and Assemblies

Few things I wanted to gather some opinions on.

First is Whizkid 2 - As it currently stands, the effect of modding assemblies only applies to assemblies constructed after getting WK 2. I think this acts like more of an oversight then anything, and the modding an assembly effect should apply to any assembly that doesn't already have a modpack. Further discussion can be found here.

Second is the rarity of modpacks. This is something that I don't have an opinion on - I just wanted to know what people thought. Do they spawn too often? Not often enough? Should they spawn in more special levels? Should the unique modpacks be made more accessible considering the amount of assemblies they are used in? What do you think?

The third is assemblies in general. I think some of the assemblies need a few tweaks. An example that comes to my mind is the cybernano armor when compared to it's "lesser" cousin, the Nanoskin armor. For the addition of an onyx pack to PPN, meaning you need 2 unique modpacks, the effects are quite lackluster - especially on enemies that can really bring the pain, where the additional resistances of the Nanoskin give more benefit.

What are your thoughts? Where do you stand?

Okay well i lied, i'm not drunk, i just sculled like 6 standard drinks worth of wine earlier at once because (big long scenario you don't care about). I also dont hold my liquor, sue me.

This run was pretty cool, I managed the arena pretty well, took only this one try once i started trying to do the arena going for this badge. after the arena hell knights were a joke because I came out with dualgunner and was like heyo. saw the chained courts and was like is it really worth the price? then I paid it gladly because I killed them all with great prejudice. Well, except the barons. Running straight at the arena master with pistols worked quite well because I was like PEWPEWPEW and he died. Then my zerk ran out and I was like NUOOOOO. I got beat up badly by the barons but it wasnt anything a small + large medipack couldn't fix. i do feel stupid though. Millitary base was a joke and everything died really quick. The anomoly I feel really stupid. I was gonna get that thingy that's like beat the anomoly w/o damage but i did't have a phase so i had to run for the door and i was like nuooooo and got hit by splash so i was like SKDJlajsldkjaskdja and then shot them all. I ran towards the bruiser brothers and AS IT TURNS OUT run does not stop for them and I had to quickly press up to dodge and do a barrel roll because I did't stop for them and got socked in the face for like infinity million damage and nearly died and my armor melted so I had to go run back and pray i didn't get hit. Dodgemaster helped and eventually I beat them up.

I was gonna go for the armory but I got deimos labs and I remember my last experience with them and since I got beat up by 2 bruisers at once I was like nuooooo and skipped it. totally do not know how to do that level on a decent difficulty.

halls of carnage was still pretty funny but as it turns out according to the wiki all the lost souls are replaced by 80 hp cacodemons on N!. like how are you supposed to do that wow i don't even. got lots of kills and was like yeah this isn't as hard as I thought it was.

i backed myself into the wall because of pillars and crap so I got hit by splash during cybie. no bueno.

first time doing vaults on UV and it's kinda a sod on AoMr because of all that rev bullet resistance. I didn't get zerg rushed as expected so I imagine it's not going to be that hard on another run. wouldn't want to try for scav platinum without some kind of crazyyyy build though. used a lot of medipacks because I decided that the 2 mobs left on my character screen were revs, YEAH NO THEYRE NOT REVS THEY'RE VS and i got hit from a blind spot a lot. also upset because the vaults contained nothing good, only blue armors and 1 ammo chain, no uniques, no exotics, no nothings, not even a mod or anything wow. I did pick up a blue armor for the mastermind because i have no idea why, i think it might be better then red armor if you have to tank but i've never had much trouble with the mastermind (aob zerking or cornershooting or invun. before stairs), so I have no idea.

was going to do limbo but wiki no map and didn't know what I was in for because when I did it on M it was a total joke and sung the trololol song the whole way through, on a challenge UV i'd prefer to have some more info but oh well, so i skipped that. Same with mt erebus and because the lava elemental has like 300 hp and 5 defence or something? and last time I tried doing lava pits on UV that thing kept hitting me, it's like it's a rev or something and the explosions hit the target tile? how you supposed to beat that thing without cover without using lots of medipacks wtf.

last level was hilarious because it was like 6 vs and 10 arachnotrons and they're all coming at me and i'm like well okay and try and take cover then this rev (wtf these things are HELL on aomr unless you get like a trigun or AFJ or something) and then these Vs keep ressing the rev because i cant stack anything on top of it because the arachnotrons are like i'll park my car right here and shoot at you.

as for the build/mods, i found my first ever sniper mod pack right before i levelled up to pick my first level of whizkid so i was like why not and stuck it on there. it would have been better had I not taken that level of eagle eye but hey, i had no idea it'd spawn. as for the A mod on the other pistol, it was because the second shot kept missing and i forgot i had a technical mod pack till like right after the vaults because it was yellow and next to the arena master staff so i thought it was the staff. i took the second level of whizkid because I FORGOT THAT you can't double mod armor so when i tried putting this P mod onto my nanofibre red armor i was like...huh? then i was like WOW I STOOPID. would have preferred to put that into SoG but hey what can you do.

uhh, biggest complaint that i have is small clip and not enough reload time, i mean for enemies with more then 1 armor you have to be something like this and have 2x2P pistols and SoG 4-5 to kill them in a single clip or else you just won't, and you don't always have fresh fodder meat to shoot to reload on. gun kata is defiantly OP on lower difficulties where the boss mobs have lower hp and tanky mobs don't appear until later giving you enough chance to get your damage/mod/whatever on, but on UV it seems pretty balanced if not a bit of a pain, i think it'd suffer on N! though because of the nightmare mobs and forced levels but HEY WHAT DO I KNOW. if you did MGk and got a blaster or AFJ or something you'd be laughing, i think it'd be just as bad as getting a dragonslayer on a MMB run or a nano-shrapnel SSG on a shottyhead run.

A few early game questions and one late-game.

I've tried for about 30 hours of actual ingame time and more thinking time but haven't come up with a solution to any of these issues.

The first is Hell Knights on floor 3 of AoB/AoMr. You don't have anything decent to tackle them with at this stage, at least that i'm aware of.

For AoMr, even without the HK having armor and SoG 2 (Best scenario at dlev 2), you're going to need 9 shots on average to kill a hell knight, and with their 110% speed you can't run rings around them at that stage. Even with a scout, at best you'll match them move for move (I'm not sure if their 110% speed is at 0.91 or rounds down to 0.9), and if you spawn in a level with 2-3 HKs then running to get away from them isn't a viable option. In addition, trying to cornershoot them doesn't always work, because for some reason unlike Cacos and Mancubi, instead of moving down to hug the wall to get closer to you they tend to move out in the open so they can shoot you. This behavior also applies to Revs, Viles, and Barons, but they're less of a problem.

For AoB, you can gift-drop and lure them so you don't have to deal with their projectile attack (unless you start in a wide open space), but then you still have to face them in melee and get torn apart by their base +6 accuracy (so on UV/N! running does nothing) 1d3+6. You can't run circles around them with a combat knife again, because of their speed.

Both of these also apply to demons but to a lesser extent - it's much easier to deal with demons on AoMr because of their AI and demons are only 25 hp with 1d3+5.

I don't think it's just up to the RNG and has something to do with my lack of skill as a player, so does anyone have any tips?

How do you deal with corpses on Nightmare? What i've tried to do earlygame is just pool them into one area but I haven't had much luck reliably stacking them - they don't go where I want them to go and you can't gib them with rockets because you don't have a rocket launcher. You *can* get one from the arena but that still means you have to do the arena first - which requires you to deal with mid-tier enemies.

I recall the arena spawning on floor 3 during one game of 0.9.9.7. I believe that it's fixed on 2 now because that's what the wiki says and I recall all the other levels being fixed, so is my memory simply failing me? Just checking.

A final question: How do you combat knife throw the AoD to death? I've thought about it and the notion of having more runspeed then it makes sense, but I can't practically see how you could within the small space of the cathedral and the angel pursuing you directly (meaning diagonal movement), making it hard to circle it to pick up your knife.

Any help is much appreciated because i've been mulling over these for ages and have made absolutely no progress.

I don't even understand how to do Nightmare. I mean, most of the levels I spent fleeing in fear like I was playing the first few levels of an AoB game or something. The only level I didn't was the level where I had an invunerability and a berserk at once so I went around shooting things for exp. I mean, how are you supposed to get things stuck on doors or anything?

Spawning in a Cacodemon cave didn't help either. Looking at the log I used 2 medipacks instead of running - I was on exactly 2% hp those times when I medipacked, so running wouldn't have done me much good (N! monsters have like +1092801983098102938129 to hit).

I'm kinda frustrated that I have no idea how to approach this. I have enough trouble with the tanky mobs on level 3 of UV as it is, I have no idea how to even approach doing nightmare.
