Post Mortem / [U|AoP|100%|YAAM] Back in action

Hi everyone!

I kinda disappeared after the new year, at first overwhelmed by having to go to work again everyday, later sort of putting off my return for the sake of putting it off... Big thanks to LuckyDee for poking me a bit and making me break the cycle.

Anyway, I played my first game in 997 (not counting beta) and the first game this year. Luckily, it didn't turn out to be the disaster I was worried about and I got a new platinum badge out of it, so that's something.

For AoP, I decided to play it safe and get Int2 cateye build. I saw the Deimos lab for the first time (in the beta RNG never allowed me to try it) and it was quite fun. The shamblers didn't stand a chance against me and I got two nano mods out of it. For some reason I decided to make a powered blue armour, a first for me, but it felt pretty good. Between cateye and int2, I didn't really need passive defence that much, but I felt safer. Plus at least I didn't have to worry about armour since then.

The second nano mod was obviously meant for gravity boots, so I carried it with me for several levels, when I suddenly realized that A) nano-modded missile launcher is awesome, and B) Cateye is in fact a rocket launcher build, not pistol build as some people keep insisting. I see people on the forums often writing how infinite rockets are great and all, but you blow up all your loot. Guess what? If you have a nano modded missile launcher, you don't need any loot! Just demolish everything. The only enemies that can stand to that are lost souls, but I just punched them if they got too annoying.

The Containment area caught me a little by surprise - I realized that it is a remake of The Wall, so I busted through, found the backpack and screamed in terror as barons spawned all around me. I was running a little low on ammo at that point, but luckily I had a homing phase and a rocket box, so I just killed everything with fire and that eventually gave me the idea to slap the nano mod on my missile launcher. When everything died, I finally got to pick up the backpack and... impure! Damn, forgot about this being AoP =(

I used an onyx mod to make lava boots since I was missing that assembly (same with the VGFB9000 which I didn't fire once), though I remembered it from 995, and they turned out to be extremely useful in both Limbo and the Lava Lits. The Pits especially were a breeze with unlimited rockets, cateye vision, and immunity to lava.

In the end I decided not to tempt face and confront JC, since I was low on cells, despite firing the plasma rifle only rarely.

Play-By-Forum / All Outta Bubblegum

Due to all the research for DukeRL, I'm pretty immersed in everything related to Duke and I came across this simple and quite possibly awesome RPG system:

All Outta Bubblegum

I thought about it a bit and decided to run a game here, if there's interest.

Basic rules

If you read the rules, you'll see it's simplicity itself - the players only have a single "stat", and that is the amount of bubblegum they carry around, which starts at 8 and can go all the way down to 0. All possible actions are divided between "asskicking" and "everything else". To succeed in any normal action (opening a door, hacking a computer, persuading someone etc.), you have to roll a 1d10 and get a number less than or equal to the amount of bubblegum you possess. To succeed in an asskicking (kicking a door open, blasting an alien with a shotgun, beating someone to get him to do what you want etc.), you also roll a 1d10, but you need to score more than how many sticks of bubblegum you have.

You lose bubblegum whenever you fail at a standard action, when somebody kicks your ass or you can spend one to guarantee a success at a non-asskicking related activity.

That means that at first the players will be quite inefficient asskickers, more likely to succeed through other means, but with time and bubblegum chewing, you'll become mean badasses until, eventually, you run all outta gum. The good thing is that at that point you will automatically succeed in any asskicking you decide to unleash. The bad thing is that you won't be able to tie your shoelaces, unless you manage to turn the act into an asskicking.

I will keep track of an additional stat - ego. It will go up with every spectacular display of asskicking and serve as hippoints in the AOB stage, and get lowered by enemy attacks and by some really embarrassing failures, asskicking or not. This will be a secret stat - after all, no shame in having a gigantic ego, but you shouldn't obsess about it. I'll sometimes let you know of the changes of this by saying stuff like "You feel like a total badass right now." or "having failed to kick down the door, a wave of insecurity washes over you."

Setting

The game is initially set in LA, Red Light District, just before the events of Duke Nukem 3D (if you recall, he comes back from space only to find the alien assault is already in progress). The LAPD gets mutated into pig cops, babes are abducted all over the place and nasty aliens swarm the streets. The whole world is wondering when is Duke coming to save us, and you players form a rag-tag group trying to survive in the meantime and maybe even take the fight to the enemy, if you will be so incline. There's going to be an option to go to space and in any case you'll be able to witness some classic scenes from the game, maybe even meeting the King himself. It is Duke's task to save the world, though, so your primary concern should be survival. And who knows? Maybe one or two of you whom I don't kill off will grow to become almost Duke's equal.

Characters

You can create any sort of character - an EDF recruit on leave, a drug dealer whose hoes got abducted by the aliens, a homeless guy who, seeing the aliens attack the City of Angels, decides that "this will not stand" or whatever else you fancy. That said, the game will begin just before the initial alien attack edit: in a night club, to be precise, so don't put the aliens in your background wihtout consulting me, perhaps. Or you could play just a generic guy and let him evolve on his own. No need to get too elaborate here.

Additional details

I'll be probably tinkering with the rules on the go, and in any case I'll ultimately decide things by feel, so there might be inconsistencies in my rulings. Just deal with it. What I say goes. I'll take the precise number rolled into account to see how well you succeeded, or how miserably you failed. I will also favour you based on how badass action you try to perform. If you succeed on a roll to see if you can kick a pig cop with all your might, you'll hurt the enemy. If you roll the same number to grab him by the tusks and ram his head into a toilet while saying "You need to take a bath," an instant kill is pretty much guaranteed, as well as an ego boost. Shouting a one-liner and then failing to deliver could hurt your ego though.

Also, it will ultimately be me who decides if some action is asskicking or not. You can of course ask me before trying something that falls in the grey-area. For example - jumping through a second floor window and breaking your fall on a fruit stall - you'd best hope you have a lot of bubblegum, since that is not asskicking, even though it is quite badass. Jumping through a second floor window and breaking your fall on an unsuspecting pig cop though, that is asskicking. Very simple actions like taking (except persuading, seducing etc), walking around, running outside combat or hiding in a cupboard will be free, no rolls necessary. That last one will definitely hurt your ego, of course. Some combat actions, such as avoiding an enemy's charge are still non-asskicking. Anything to do with violence, especially the unnecessary kind, will probably fall down to asskicking though. Sometimes I might decide to split a complicated action into two - if there is an enforcer in the room, turned back to you, sneaking up on him and then strangling him would be two separate actions.

Oh, and to try to avoid this game stalling and dying out, I'll simply run the actions that you write and if someone doesn't play for some time, we'll just assume that the character stayed with the group and did nothing important. I'll also be quite tempted to kill you off when I get the chance, while allowing anybody to pretty much join at any time with a new character, so if the original players lose interest, the game can continue with new ones. If you really really don't want  me to kill your character, there's an easy defense - make them memorable and interesting. A group of tough-as-nails marines, each with a mysterious past and motivated by some personal tragedy will not make it too long in this game =P



So anyway... anybody interested? Questions? Suggestions?

I'd like to get this started as soon as possible. I'll just need a couple of days to make a draft of the overall story and 2-3 willing players and we can start, I think.

Intro

During the donation drive, I made and off-hand remark about how I'd love to see DukeRL made, and thelaptop, in a burst of generosity which left me speechless, donated the required amount and left me the responsibility of working out the details of the mod. So I've started to gather ideas (even writing some of that stuff down before forgetting it!) and I feel I should start systematically posting what I have so far here on the forum.

In general, I'm trying to keep the basic concepts of DukeRL close to DoomRL, but thinking of things that would make the gameplay quite different. Only time will tell if it will work out. The game will obviously be based on Duke Nukem 3D, borrowing bits and pieces from other titles. I'll write anything borrowed from outside DN3d (including the atomic edition) in purple.

Anybody is welcome to offer their thoughts and ideas, of course. A little brainstorming never hurt anybody. And I will definitely welcome any comments from the devs of DoomRL when it comes to feasibility of any trickier mechanisms I come up with. I'll try not to constrain myself too much by what I think is possible - I'll leave that to you =)

I'll be adding to these few posts bit by bit as I manage to gather my notes and thoughts.

Nightmare! / [N!|Ao100|99%|48|YASD] Death by boredom

I think I'm getting the hang of this. This build seems really promising. I took juggler first, to have some edge before MVm got online and both finesse and juggler are very useful, so it's not a waste. Once I got Vampyre, I could (I'm ashamed to admit) farm the last remaining enemy on each level for max health. The only problem I had (and I always have it with Vampyre) is that my armour kept getting destroyed. For the first part of the game, I was switching a dueling armour with two P-modded reds and whatever else I found laying around at the moment. At some point I stopped caring and ran around naked, charging into pretty much anything without any fear of death. I even charged towards mancubi along a wall a few times and survived, which unfortunately made me even more suicidal. And it worked! I rarely had to pop a medkit, TaN 3 serving as an unbreakable armour which I didn't find.

I knew I won't be able to finish the game all at once - I died at around 1AM - but I decided that I want to reach level 50 before hybernating my computer. The last 15 or so levels got kinda boring though. I felt invincible, I didn't have ammo or armour to worry about and I wanted to get it over with as fast as I could. Oh, and I had a trigun for nuking. That sped it up a little, but not enough.

When I died, I was like "Huh. So the guy can die. Interesting." I wasn't even angry or sad. Weird.

In any case, next time I try this, I'm taking a break after 40 levels no matter what. And I'll hope for some indestructible armour. And a chainsaw, that would be nice.

Oh, one more thing - I see there are only 7 enemies on the graveyard shot, and I'm missing 8 for YAAM. I blame the nightmare versions - since they are silent, it's quite easy miss them I guess. If I ever pull this off, I'm not expecting a true YAAM, but damn, this is 99,74% enemies killed. That should count =)

Nightmare! / [N!|Ao100|99%|45|YASD] Almost halfway...

This was a good run. I'm quite happy with the build - with the focus on passive defense, I felt quite safe most of the time. I did have problems with ammo later on though, when nightmare arachnotrons replaced the regular ones. They are much harder to farm for cells. I guess ammochain or a melee build will be required for me to beat this challenge.

I played masterless most of the game, eventually taking entrenchment to get a bit more protection when things got nasty. I was considering scavenger for a bit, but I didn't want to part with berserker. It was a good choice, since Ber saved my ass a couple of times, allowed me to occasionally melee to save on ammo, and most importantly, I didn't find a single unique and just one special weapon - the missile launcher. Other than that I found acid-proof boots twice, an onyx armour, hell staff (that was at least a little useful) and that's it, I think.

Looking at the graveyard, it seems there were only 6 enemies left in the level, so I must have missed somebody in the earlier levels. If I did win this run, I would be seriously pissed off to find out it wasn't a YAAM.

Oh, and it took me full day, since I left it running while I was sleeping and at work today =)
Edit: I just noticed that this run constitues 1/7th of my entire playtime in this version. Cool.

Nightmare! / [N!|Ao100|97%|25|YASD] A real nightmare

So it seems it's come to this - N! is my standard difficulty now. Not that I managed to beat it, but I'm getting better. Since my standard N! games end at the anomaly at best, I decided to try Ao100. I don't have much time to play DoomRL recently, nowadays usually I play just a few runs that end with disaster right away. Unfortunately, this was not the case - unfortunately because I started playing around 22:30 and had to go to get up early the next day.

I went with entrenchment. I wanted a chainfire build, but I didn't want Cateye, Ammochain didn't seem necessary with respawning enemies, and the general masters all restrict some traits I wanted. I basically wanted to do a masterless build, but then I thought, hey, entrenchment doesn't block anything too important. I'm not sure how much it helped me (I reckon some unlucky level beginnings hurt me a bit less).

Anyway, I was lucky enough to find the necroarmor on level 3. I immediately took two levels of TaN and with armour 8 and occasional +30% resistance, I was pretty safe. I shamelessly camped whenever and wherever I could until the whole level fell silent. 751 296 turns to get to a quarter of the game might be a little more than usual, I admit. Cotonou was able to win Ao100 with 95% kill rate in just 269 575 turns...

Somewhere in the early levels I had a duel with a hell knight /w a bulletproof vest. I kept pumping bullets into him, thinking that I simply have to kill him eventually. Then he reached me and proceeded to kick my ass. In the last possible moment (and I really should have done that immediately) I switched to a double shotgun and blew his severely wounded ass off.

Another highlight is that I found a chainsaw. I think I only saw chainsaw outside chained court once before. I discarded it immediately, but I was so glad to see it, like an old friend.

Anyway, as I was progressing deep into hell, much much farther than I ever managed to on N!, I realized I actually have a chance to win this, or at least get very far. But it was way past midnight and I had to go to work today. I considered leaving the computer on whole day and finishing the game next evening (i.e. right now), but I was scared that something will go wrong and I won't be able to forgive myself for throwing this run away. At level 25, I took a break, described my predicament on IRC (nobody was listening, I believe) and went back to the game.

I died almost immediately after firing a rocket into a lava barrel right in front of me. I guess I was too tired to be careful =(

Let the gravestone of this marine bears these words: "On level 25 he finally killed by a soldier."

Pseudoedit: I had 100% kills up to this point too! Maybe some other time.

I've already moved past the phase where I quickly run out of ammo and get killed with no way to defend myself, now I'm facing difficulties when dealing with higher levels, which are actually dangerous for unprepared marines. Most of my games end on level 4.

So I was wondering, should I stay at lower levels until I scrape together enough XP to improve most of my skills, possibly getting a weapon still to master level?

I usually get to a state where the lower levels don't really pose too much danger to me, with plenty of ammo and medkits. I tend to climb the towers at that point, probably getting to dangerous places too soon. Should I, for example, fully explore all/most of the towers before going up? Should I spend time camping and just shooting aliens to get XP while I'm not pressed for ammo?

I tend to skip a lot of potential XP simply because I want to get into action. Besides, lack of enough keys/explosives prevent me from fully exploring millitary/security towers, the layouts of some towers (namely medical and civilian) and/or radiation usually make me explore only the remaining towers, unless I need to find a working elevator.

So... is there some rule of thumb how much XP I should spend before venturing upwards?

AliensRL / YASD - I'm starting to get a hang of it

I finally got to trying the 0.8.2 version and I really love the new tower layouts. Also, I'm not sure if I'm getting better or the game got easier, but I was finally having some fun playing, instead of waiting for slow painful death. I got enough supplies to venture into higher levels this time, though I should have got back to storage tower at some point to resupply, instead I got ripped to shreds after running out of ammo. The engeneering tower is really nice with all the glass rooms.

I'll try to experiment with some other builds next. I went with a marine, thinking it will be the most basic and thus perhaps easier route. I keep hearing good things about heavy weapons build, though I still haven't found any new weapons besides the FN SCAR rifle. I guess I'll try to hunt for keys and explore the lower levels of security tower next, instead of rushing upwards.

OK, I've finally found time to play a little more, but I haven't been able to get too far. I feel like I could really use some pointers:

So far the game for me is a hopeless struggle to have enough ammo. But getting more ammo means searching everywhere, which means fighting aliens, and in the end I'm eventually running out at least as fast as I can replace lost ammo. I've found the storage tower, but once I clear that, I'm in the same problem as before.

I'm guessing I need a better weapon, but I've so far only found the starting (for marines) MP5 and some other rifle (forgot the name) which uses different ammunition, but since I can't bring both with me, it doesn't really help. I haven't found any new sidearm besides the starting pistol which is quite underwhelming. I guess more ammo/weapons can be found in the more difficult towers/levels, but they also bring more dangerous aliens and in the end I end up running out of ammo sooner if I try to forage into the more dangerous areas.

What still kinda puts be off in this game is that there's (at least from the beginning) not much problem with health, just with ammo. Only when ammo runs out do I get seriously hurt/killed fast.


Other than that - I keep trying to pick up open doors and to close weapons lying around, these graphics should be differentiated.

Oh, and I was thinking that the already scary atmosphere could be further improved by making each player step make a sound, though it could become tiresome after a while. It could sound good though.

I know that pinkies and lost souls tend to bunch up in current version so this might be related, but holy shit... too bad I don't have any explosives.

Standard game, N!, Phobos 2. The imp to the left is free to move, the others stay this way no matter how long I wait. (I have a tracking map, obviously)

Edit: I shot them and they charged me as expected. Their corpses are now on the bottom of that river.

I haven't played it much so far, but it's kinda tought to understand the exact shapes of the blocks. Blasting them away with the shotgun is quite satisfying, though. Also, for some reason Viles are the straight line kind of block - the best one to get =)

This took me far more tries than I'd like. After being unable to even get to Sharpshooter, I tried to go with ammochain instead, which is much easier in the early game. Best attempt with that build was when I found a sniper mod in the armoury which completely nullified ammochain's weakness - blocked EE. Unfortunately, a nuke level and cleverly hidden stairs lead to YASD... at least I got to see the stairs just before the detonation.

Today I started to try sharpshooter again and it went better. One of the runs gave me Jackhammer in the armoury which I used for quite some time after getting sharpshooter, but alas, eventually it was yet another YASD. YAYASD? Whatever...

This run started well enough, Hell's armoury gave me a nano pack and I wisely decided to hold onto it to make gravity boots. By inventory was quite cramped until I could get WK2 but it was worth it. I think I got it early after spider's lair, where I somehow lost all my armour, but the ability to run circles around anybody else compensated for the lack of protection.

On the first level of Hell, I was placed before a choice - I had a nuke (and the nuclear plasma gun) and there was an invulnerability globe near both normal stairs and those leading to UC. It took me quite a while, thinking whether to nuke UC or Hell 2 until I realized the obvious choice and nuked both. What was I thinking?

At some point I got Int 2 and since then it was really easy. Nothing could stand in my way.

I found two combat pistols in hell (levels 5 and 6). Kinda late, but one of them eventually became my instrument in killing the mastermind, properly modded ofc. Turns out the large clip is quite useful there, even though I had plenty of ammo in ammo boxes.


Oh, and besides this platinum badge, I finally got Armorer platinum and even discovered my first master assembly (nanomanufacture ammo).

I guess next is AoRA to get my last missing bronze badge. Since I've tried and failed hard to go for the quatermaster diamond, I think I'll play it on HNTR and go for conqeror to make it more interesting.
