3 primary methods of killing the Angel of Death that I've identified.

1. Traditional Berserker-based melee tactics. Old news, we know how this works.

2. Malicious Blades. Yes, it's that good- I just tried it a couple runs ago. Chainsword and/or a piercing knife is required; it'll be a really long fight with the AoD's 10 armor otherwise. (shit, it might be a pretty long fight anyways) MMB will easily let you go toe-to-toe with him, and while it is scary to have the screen flash red after every hit, only losing 2HP per hit is nothing short of awesome.

3. Items. Piercing Chainsaw + ridiculously stacked anti-melee armor. Shielded Armor is probably the absolute best, since it won't take damage, but there are a few other options. The AoD's frighteningly strong melee abilities limit the armor pool substantially; going off of the wiki, here's what I think'll work:
   *Ballistic Shield
   *Shielded Armor
   *(Duelist Armor)
   *(Ballistic Vest)
The first 2 armors will give you at least as much protection as Malicious Blades, and while your offense will be a bit weaker (single attack/turn, and you DID grab Brute at some point, did you?), they should make you tough enough to slug it out. Duelist Armor and Ballistic Vest offer much weaker melee resists, and they honestly probably aren't enough.

Hatred Skull sounds like a rather dodgy option, actually. No corpses from the Lost Souls, and a good chance of not getting many Demon corpses (do corpses actually stack?). Course, I'm salting those words now; I'd wager some loony like Tormuse is gearing up to get Longinus Diamond in exactly that fashion.

Yeah, I wouldn't say that the Unholy Cathedral forces aspiring Conquerers into melee builds, but the situation there does everything but forcing melee consideration. Planning ahead and getting lucky is the only real way to do it without a melee-based build. ....well, you really only need Berserker, trait-wise.

Gee, OBVIOUSLY you just have to be BERSERK when you pick it up.

I mean that sounds simple enough, right? Well, maybe if it was that easy then it wouldn't be such a secret.
Been there, tried that. If it's a requirement, it's not the only one.

After some digging through old DS mortems, and finding some commonalities between them, plus what people have been saying around the forums, I think I know how to wield the Dragonslayer and wear the Berserker Armor. But I'm not 100% certain, and I won't spill it on the forums.

I could get involved. Just finished up finals, and at the very least I could share things that would help newcomers.

I don't know if there's an established consensus on the best way to tackle Chained Court +, but I'd wager that the Arena Master generally gets focused first because he's an Arch-Vile, and capable of rezzing those 4 "other" demons anyway. Clever thinking, though, I might have to give it a shot.

140
I've found a common trait in old mortems that managed to wield it, but I don't know if there's more than just that. I suspect I know how to wear the Berserker Armor as well, but I've not even had the two pieces spawn in the same game..... yet.

Discussion / Re: Experimenting with Malicious Blades on Ao100

Or maybe I'll find a Minigun...
Assault Cannon's better than the Minigun. Just finished up an Ao100 run with a Demolition Minigun, and I must admit to being rather underwhelmed. Put that Sniper mod on your Assault Cannon, and make a ludicrous bullet death-laser. Just be sure to stock up on 10mil rounds and Ammo Chains...

That Energy Shield is pretty boss against Fire and Plasma....

Just to clarify - what is the game time of quick-reloading from the box?
I can live with this, but when quick-reloading from a box into a tactical shotgun, it takes six actions while standing still, as opposed to a single move. It makes me feel a bit vulnerable, especially in the middle of a firefight.
And thanks for the congrats :).
Reloading from an ammo pack takes 1/5 of the reload time listed in your character screen. So for a Tac Shotgun, you should be able to do a full reload in about as much time as a move-reload. Also, I'm not convinced that fully reloading a Tac Shotgun every move with Shottyman is not a bug.

144
You friggin' psycho. Hell-bent on absolutely dominating the game much?

Survivalist does actually seem to be a great go-to build for limited health games (AoI, AoHu, etc.), but I wouldn't presume to have any clue of what works for Nightmare. Also, I thought the Gravity Boots were indestructible... probably not something you'd want to test that far into that kind of run, though, har.

« on: November 28, 2011, 23:48 »
I used to favor Ammochain in Ao100 for obvious reasons, but have lately begun to favor Scavenger due to the possibilities of insane equipment.
Seems a bit nasty that you didn't find anything usable for a PNP (Nanoskin) or PNOP (cybernano) assembly..
Nanoskin Duelist Armor or Nano-modded Cerberus Duelist Armor/ Ballistic Vest might be the best armor assemblies in the game.

Nice run ended by a really rough death. The old "Mother-in-law" (nano-modded rocket launcher) is a perennial favorite for the Centurials who can build one. You obviously know what you're doing, and I'd challenge you to finish the Angel properly!

156 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 119 of those were killed.
3 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 6 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

 28 souls destroyed the Cyberdemon...
2 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
25 killed the bastard and survived.
1 showed that it can outsmart hell itself.

That was fun. I've pretty much ever played Angel of Max Carnage of Ultra-Violence for some reason, and today my persistence has been rewarded! Never did I think that I had a chance at any Diamond badges other than Armorer and Technician- perhaps I'm capable of more than I've given myself credit for.

Int (2) is really, really good on AoMC. In fact, I'd venture to say that Int (2) makes AoMC a breeze... as much as Ultra-Violence can be a breeze. With the stupidly high hit rates even out of vision, I'm not sure that Cateye is the best master to go for under AoMC, but it had to have helped. Juggler is another trait that's just plain awesome- I delayed picking it up until after a couple levels of Ironman to minimize the risk of surprise 1-turn deaths.

I played pretty conservatively since things can go from "oh, I'm doing fine" to "OMFG what I'm dead" literally in one move. As such, I only took on the first part of Hell's Armory and the Halls of Carnage. A shotgun and a bulk-modded chaingun got me pretty far, with occasional help from a rocket launcher. Things were pretty straightforward within the Phobos Base floors once I got rolling, and getting a hold of a Missile Launcher and a couple rocket boxes before Hellgate made Gatekeeper Diamond a cinch, though I didn't realize it at the time. Bullets started getting pretty scarce in Hell, but I managed to stretch my 10mm ammo until about floor 17 (I guess, I'm not posting this immediately after my win). Ditched with little 10mm ammo I had, equipped an ammo chain, and let rip with my gatling gun. I had planned ahead for the lack of 10mm rounds, and had a pretty nice stockpile of power cells to feed a plasma rifle and BFG.

2 floor starts had me crying "bullshit", but the mighty BFG or RNG came through and saved me each time. The first time was low in Phobos Base- I spawn in view of a platoon of Formers backed up by Arch-Viles.... with an Invulnerability Globe mayyyybe reachable. It was reachable. The second time was an Arachnotron Cave in Hell where I appeared in the midst of 3 Arachnotrons! Whipped out my BFG and shot the floor right next to me; 2 of the spiders died right there, I juggle-swapped to my other gun and wasted the third before systematically wiping the Cave clear.  Wielded a combat shotgun for a few floors, but ditched it when I spied a Nuclear Plasma Rifle pretty low in Hell alongside a Napalm Launcher. That Nuclear Plasma Rifle sealed the game. With about 7-8 full stacks of power cells to feed my BFG many, many Hellspawn died in coruscating fire. Didn't have an opportunity to get tactical against the Cyberdemon. A Supercharge Globe gave me the hp to survive a fight that might have killed me otherwise. Cybie spawned within my Intuition range as I entered the Phobos Arena, I swapped between my Nuke Rifle and BFG and tried to dodge as best as I could. Eventually got pasted to the wall and I just kept shooting, fearing the worst. Imagine my surprise when the Cyberdemon suddenly exploded- I hadn't even been seeing his health since he was shelling my from outside of my Intuition range. (New feature, I presume? Ran into that behavior in Ao100 as well).

As some of you have probably gathered from my player profile, I've played DoomRL for quite some time. I actually started on .9.9.1, and have been importing my player.wad since .9.9.2. I've had some pretty good games under my belt, and some pretty bad ones, but I feel that today's run was something that should be shared. Howdy, Chaosforge!
