Took around fifteen tries, only half of which were deaths/quits on Phobos Entry.

One of the tries involved a Phobos 2 that generated 7 small meds (two right next to each other!) and a Phobos 3 which generated a vault with two large meds. And then a Phobos 4 with an ambush party of two shotgunners and two formers, literally all of them firing at once the move I stepped around the corner into LOS and killing me from >50%.

Oh, invulnerability. Oh, skipping special levels. Oh, losing out on my second Platinum Cross because I paused once or twice to take a bite of dinner...

Twelve points to anyone who can figure out my marine's name.

Requests For Features / Blood Rivers In Hell

Hell is just generally full of lava and it gets awful without frequent envirosuit spawns, heavy heavy boots, and/or extreme care.

To ameliorate this problem, since for some reason it's not in DoomRL already, I suggest adding rivers of blood, perhaps between acid and lava on the 'scale'. A simple color-shift for both graphical and console versions, and they act like pools of blood for tracking it all over the place.

Requests For Features / Ironman/Berserker Interaction

Currently, it seems that Berserker activates when you're damaged for a certain percent of your health rather than a certain amount of health.

Therefore, berserkers do not want to take Ironman.

Discussions of melee power balance aside, this feels kind of silly and unintuitive. Why would being able to take more hurt reduce your ability to go berserk when a rocket hits you? Why would taking a trait actively penalize another one like this?

Requests For Features / Repeat Level Feeling

For the uninitiated, the level feeling is the message(s) shown after 'You enter level x' upon entering a new level in many roguelikes.

Far too many times, I've just been derping around, speeding through, or tired, and completely spaced what Doomguy noticed when his boots hit a new floor, usually after feeling relatively safe. Setting the message buffer to something obscene and scrolling all the way back works, I guess. Having a key that re-prints the message would be a lot handier, though.

This would make at least a little sense and change the function of levers (at least in most of my games) from those funny weird things I run right past, except when I have to pull them to shoot the Mastermind/Shambler/lots of skulls.

The early game had its usual frustrations - the occasional point-blank shotgun blast too weak to fully kill some tiny trash thing and melee being gimped until Chained Court. By the time the chainsaw was in my hands, things naturally got easier. I was almost worried about being unable to corner-shoot the Arena Master... then I remembered I was playing a melee game.

The Wall was super-interesting, and afterwards I wasn't quite sure why I did it. Shotguns always attract more heat than I tend to be able to handle, and using the chainsaw tended to cut it closer than I liked. Then, towards the end, zerk procced, gg. From that point on, I figured I'd stick to the missile launcher, switching to melee for sticky spots, like whenever I've been hit hard enough to zerk, at least until I picked Juggler and it stopped mattering.

Hell's Armory was a good little Hell's Armory and dropped a nano pack once I used my shiny new piercing chainsaw to clear it. On the next floor... a second nano pack dropped. There are oodles of assembly options with just WK(1), and I could have gone the full route after MVm, made something extra-shiny.

I put it on my missile launcher instead. So, by that point, it was 'don't need armor shards anyway', 'don't really need health orbs anyway', and most importantly, 'don't need any ammo, ever'. I could literally shoot the missile launcher whenever I wanted without caring about the consequences.

The game quickly realized its mistake. The Vaults spawned full of Barons (naturally) who grabbed all the armor in sight (of course) including one energy shield (ugh) and... one plasma shield. I'm not sure why I didn't switch back to the chainsaw when the first ten zerked spear strikes didn't kill the latter; maybe to see just how many it would take (the plasma shield wound up at 23%, if anyone wants to have fun trying to calculate it).

The Mortuary was probably the hardest I have ever won. The initial skull didn't hit anything, and neither did BFG shots to the left and to the right. Every single arch-vile was at the very edge of the map. The struggle was truly epic, in the end burning six large med-packs for a nuclear BFG in return. (I still have skulls in my backpack because I'm an idiot.)

After that mess, the rest of the game was refreshingly easy.

Named Guts because I had hoped to find and try to wield the Dragonslayer, just like every other melee game I've played recently.

How many master traits do I have? Let's see... Ammochain, almost full Blademaster for when I'm in a pinch, pretty much Army of the Dead with uber-Shottyman...

So much of this run was handled like a boss you'd expect, so I'll hit the low points.

- I keep thinking I'm going to run out of ammo around the point I'm down to just a BFG9000 (B3) of cells (and nanoshrapnel), hence the schizophrenic 'just in case' traits (berserker actually came in handy, though).
- Four BFGs spawned in this game. The first one? I was berserk while walking towards it and didn't notice a hell knight sneaking up.
- I made a burst plasma rifle (A1)! And then never used it! And then accidentally threw it into lava picking up a small medkit.
- For 90 levels I was wearing tactical boots. I assembled three sets of cerberus armor.
- I screwed up almost every single time I modded - modded a cerberus instead of making a spare, stuck an onyx pack on one when I had an onyx armor in my inventory, waiting to be started.
- I had intended to make a nanomanufacture something, but I never got around to it.
- I would have had hyperblaster #2 several floors early if I had not gotten impatient (some 20 floors with no plasma rifles) and put a tech on what would become my endgame boots.
- The f-mod on Hyperblaster #2 was originally going to be on a demolition minigun, but the very first thing I did was add the wrong mod.
- That shielded armor is pretty handy, isn't it? I never wore it.
- I only fired the BFG10k like four times, just for fun. There was nothing that judicious application of the nano super shotgun wouldn't handle better.
- The BFG9ks, on the other hand, were never fired a single time.
- I missed multiple opportunities to A-mod my boots and T-mod my shotgun.

The barrel at the end was on purpose. Fireworks weeee

Requests For Features / The Rocket Launcher.

You usually get one for free from Hell's Arena. They show up relatively early. They're used for breaking walls, and occasionally the corpses near the walls, and occasionally the Arena Master.

You do the Wall right, you dump the Rocket Launcher. You get your master trait, half the time you dump the Rocket Launcher. Even its assemblies, useful as they are, feel the sting of not under-use, but under-utilization.

Why? Because they don't behave how rocket launchers should when in the hands of a trained marine.

Here's a list of possible tweaks! Not all of them necessarily have to go in, or are necessarily good ideas, or will necessarily not irreparably break the game, but they're things to think about.

- If an enemy or black space is targeted, it behaves as normal.
- If a (visible) floor is targeted, roll to hit the tile in the crosshairs.
Failure hits an adjacent square. Super-failure can perhaps take it further than adjacent.
Maybe give it rocket-jumping stats, since it's not a direct hit: half damage, maybe lots of knockback.
- Lower base accuracy.
Someone without a keen eye can hardly be expected to hit the right square with such a heavy weapon.
- Halve damage dealt to self from splash all the time, like from rocket jumping.
Allows better use in melee, but not nearly as good as mFA.
- Reduce damage dealt to (certain?) items on the ground. Flesh melts more easily than steel.
The reason rocket launchers are never primary weapons is partly because of this.
- Revenant's Launcher: becomes essentially an s-modded Rocket Launcher with big dice and a tiny blast radius.
Alternatively, make it a weaker exotic with an added low drop rate from (non-rezzed) Revenants? That'd be sorta cool.
- Missile Launcher: almost always hits a targeted monster, but can't lock-on to walls or floors.
Possibly explodes if it travels too far (misses), at least clipping the target with the blast?
- Start brainstorming master traits that do well with rocketeer builds. Fireangel for the melee rocketeer! Pyromaniac, whose distance damage drop-off is improved! Rocket Whore, who can carry 3x the rockets! Or cram 3x the rockets into their launchers, or shoot three rockets for each trigger pull, or reload their launchers in a third of the time, or make them never miss or whatever. Or the dreaded mMB: Master trait Michael Bay, whose rockets get BFG-like splash (and whose BFG splashes are all absolutely ludicrous).

I was thinking about how useful rocket jumping is, and how silly it is that you can't utilize the same basic idea, except not aiming directly at your feet.

I was also thinking about Hell and its seventeen million rockets (and Revenant's Launchers), all of which will get left behind by my marines with bottomless plasma rifles.

I was also thinking about how awesome rocket launchers are, for serious you guys, they're explosions you shoot like from a gun.

Was accidentally slumming it with a PPB plasma rifle (the one still in my bag, in fact) until I found a laser rifle with a power mod sitting right next to it. It wasn't long before I found the mods I needed for try #2 at a burst cannon. (It was over a dozen floors before I found that firestorm pack.)

That was pretty much game. With 11 rounds a shot, at almost half a second a volley with fin(3), I did 11d9+55 raw damage pretty much every time I hit 'fire'. Arch-viles only got off a blast if I was careless or decided to walk in my cerberus armor and boots (and then Enviroboots), many nightmare monsters never got a shot off before I trashed them, and nightmare demon caves were freebies. The only problems I had were a baron of hell with a ballistic shield and every revenant ever with their resistances (apparently burst cannons change plasma weapons to bullet damage). With Bad(2) and three sets of cerberus armor (excessive? I think not) they couldn't chip away more than I could restore.

It's easy to see the point where I started to wonder how many assemblies I could make in one game.

There was an actual ammo pinch at one point (sort of)! I made a F-modded assault minigun, then later decided I would never miss it and dropped it for like a medpack or something. Some time later... a complete drought of cells that lasted 20-some levels. I had to dip in to that plasma rifle (serving as a tiny ammo dump), and got so paranoid (never mind that I had a power battery since deimos) that I picked up a chaingun and started making that secondary burst cannon as a 'sidearm' for formers. I hated pissing away even one cell on a mere zombie... but, of course, once I buckled down and strapped on the power battery gathering dust at the bottom of my pack, a former complex showed up and dropped more ammo than I knew what to do with, and then tons of arachnotrons started showing up. Still, that burst cannon took up a slot to remind me to never ditch my backup weapon ever again.

There was a point - maybe SoB5, maybe the F-mod - where I just stopped using the missile launcher. Still, a stack of 8 rockets on standby is handy no matter what you are.

For the last 25 levels, I probably could have walked around with nothing but spare cerberus armor and a space in my pack for cells and still won. It was that easy.

Those last two assemblies were really down to the wire - the two tech mods I needed were on the very last floors.

The ballistic armor was a ballistic vest. Teehee, ballistic ballistic vest.

...is it meant to make plasma weapons do bullet damage?

I had a fight with a baron that ended after it had soaked approximately 70d9+350 damage from a burst laser rifle, and it dropped a ballistic shield (7%). The only conclusion I can make is that the assembly changes the damage type to bullet.

More of a pointing-out thing than a complaining-thing, since burst laser rifle is hax anyway, especially with F-mod and mAC.

Mmhmm, Sniper Pack. The Armory giveth, and later, Ammochain made it shine. At the time, all of my large medkits were stacks of plasma cells, so I was stomping around with 500 potential volleys (not counting two BFG(B1)s)... for some reason.

Oh, right, the Mortuary. It ate a bunch of skulls and a lot of BFG, but I don't recall the last time I had fun breezing right through it. That's where all the medkits are from.

Playing through this one made me notice a few things: First, I like the new Angel. Second, I love new blue armor. Third, how many item weights were changed? I (think I) know modpacks are more common. Most of the half-dozen games I've played in 0.9.9.6, I never went more than a floor or two without seeing a medkit! In the last few versions, a lot of my games crashed and burned because there just wasn't any health left for me.

It's very possible I just play better with tiles on, though...

I'm pretty proud of this. I'm usually bad at skipping special levels, but I did this time, and it worked great. There were times when I just squeaked by - Berserker never seemed to want to trigger - and then I got the Longinus Spear. City of Skulls got interesting, lost me most of my armor and health, since lol how do I city of skulls without MBm and/or phases. Mortuary was actually a little exciting, which might not have been so if I had remembered the Spear's altfire.

All those modpacks made me cry a little bit, as did abandoning the Chensaw for another medpack. I did not get a single power mod after the nano... but Angelic Armor is pretty good, anyway.

This was my first winning 0.9.9.6 game, so I never got to see the Mastermind.

I'm pretty glad the Longinus altfire killed most of JC's minions. I have just learned that JC's minions die with him. This is still a pretty neat mortem.

Don't you pay any attention to that level of WK.

Not pictured: Teleporter I stepped onto. Then I was hit by a fireball and killed... before teleporting... which should happen the instant you step on the pad.

It was my first time in 0.9.9.5 (hey did you know DoomRL updated?) so I was mostly screwing around, and you know what happens when you screw around: freak accidents.
