Century Lounge / [U|Ao100|99%|YAVP] Cyberdemons the TERROR
« on: April 17, 2013, 15:27 »
The torture of 100 levels in UV is finally over. I can hardly believe it. Never again will I touch such an endless challenge...
The only true reason behind this was to get as many assemblies as possible plus some badges & xp medals. Most goals were done, so I won't complain (much, haha). :)
Also got some decent luck on some of the drops/scavenges including an onyx, some nanos, an early phaseshift set (I even got the gothic set later but it was ofc useless) and some pretty exotics/uniques to count.
I even loled in the final level when a BFG10k appeared, I didn't even have time to use it, damn it...
I have to admit though, the technician/scavenger is an UBER fail class at the first 5-10 levels no matter what you do due to low early dps and no other class traits such as the marine's HP/powerups or the Scout's speed and senses.
I died 4-5 times just on the first 5 dungeon levels mind you, before getting a decent game rolling. Demon vaults in particular were too scary in early game.
But the one responsible was actually my ego and stubbornness that made me wanna kill everything before descending to next level... At some point I must get rid of that bad habbit..
Anyway:
Well this was a hell of a run with too much early difficulties mainly.
I relied on hyperblaster for too many levels unfortunately, until something better came up since I had no decent weapon drops at all in early game levels.
Had some huge ammunition problems with the hyperblaster naturally, until luckily I got a nano mod at last and managed to make the much-needed overpowered nanomachic plasma rifle. It's a beast I actually finished the whole game with just that. The other weapons were just accessories rarely used if not at all.
I have to admit though, the Phaseshift set was a huge help, I'm pretty sure things would be far harder without the Cybernano Phaseshift armor and the latter insane antigravity phaseshift boots of +60% movement both of which were made around the 50s-60s if I recall correctly.
0.17sec speed seemed almost like cheating.
I did however have just once in the late levels, a terrifying encounter... The CYBERDEMON complex level...
I swear nothing could have prepared me well enough for this.
8-9 cyberdemons are just no joke at all, on the contrary they made me feel like a low lvl newbie...
The nanomachic plasma rifle is a great weapon ofc, but somehow it felt it needed loads and loads of volleys to manage to kill even one of them... Those Demons were true BEASTS in hit points! I wish I had any kind of BFG at that point to finish them quickly, but I didn't. Sadly there was no berserk or invuln on the level either... There were many kinds of barrels and small healing globes though..
I did get a computer map thankfully and also lost an onyx armor in the entrance due to one of their rockets but who cares... Life was more important...
2-3 of them attacked me early on and I didn't have time to finish them either, cause while running around 2-3 more also joined into the fray.
I had to run the whole level sidestepping through doorways and small rooms (DM helped), exploiting my huge sniper range with the nanomachic rifle and any barrel I could find to dmg them even more. Every bit of dmg helped.
Couldn't think anything better. Still I got shot quite a bit. Their AI semed pretty good as well as their range, I also think it's impossible to do knockback to them which I'm not sure if this was the case in earliest versions.
They burned through my supplies completely, and left me without a single medpack.
Luckily even while panicked and stack by the cyberdemons in some small barrel rooms without exit near the right-end, I had meanwhile abused many rockets when they got close with each other to do extra dmg...
In the end they somehow died almost together... At least the last 4-5 of them...
I believe this was the first time I got so much xp on just one single level. :P
This felt somehow as an irony reminder, since I had named the doomguy Cyberdemon...
Oh well... I guess I underestimated them, and they had to punish/scare me... They got quite close to ending my run...
Rest of the game was generally a breeze due to combination of speed and endless plasma supply.
Good thing is I also got Hell Baron and Lt. Colonel ranks after this run. :)
It somehow felt strange in the 2nd half the game though, how often the levels were filled with huge packs of Archviles/Mancubi/Barons/Revenants etc. At late game the Arch-Viles in particular seemed truly like endless hordes...
I think I'll do a break for a week or so after this...
This was too tiresome and already took too much of my free time...
FUN FACT:
Most of the uniques found such as the Railgun, the Revenant's Launcher and the BFG 10k (also the subtle knife), was actually a reason I cursed the game at that point, cause I realized through the wiki that none of them can actually get scavenged to get an onyx. And I only wanted onyx, and they gave 00 chance to get it. So in the end I just kept them for the lolz, found no reason to break them...
PS1: Ofc no dragonslayer was ever encountered. :( Damn..
PS2: At almost the whole game I was carrying a BT red armor and a T gothic boots, just in case I got an onyx mod to stick it on them for the assemblies. I actually got frustrated when I realized the Cybernano armor cannot be worn off, preventing further armor crafting and making all other armors completely useless. From that point onwards I ditched every single armor found, for obvious reason, waste of inventory. Never got an onyx since for those crafts though... In another game perhaps..

Bug Reports / [0.9.9.7G] Phaseshift Set + Onyx Pack (White) Inventory Info - Minor Bugs
« on: April 14, 2013, 04:59 »
Ok two minor DISPLAY bugs from my last Ao100:
1. I had the phaseshift set and the boots were modded with [A]. The items still appeared as "Phaseshift Suit 1/2" in inventory screen instead of 2/2.
The set bonus thank god DID work though so I could step on lava harmless. (First Screenshot)
2. Onyx mod pack found from Scavenger skill is plain white color in inventory. Surely this is not correct ??
(2nd screenshot.) EDITED: ---- Ok so this is not a bug after all, ignore it. ----
PS : I also found another probable bug but couldn't reproduce it. I once disassembled a Mega Buster without empty space in inventory and I got a huge explosion instead of a mod-pack that produced a huge lava river. LOL?

Bug Reports / [0.9.9.7G] Deimos Lab - Duplicate Exotic drop
« on: April 01, 2013, 02:02 »
I'm not sure if it's a bug or not. You tell me if it is.
In one of my games in Deimos Lab, in the weapon rewards room, I found two laser rifles. (exotic)
Is that natural , both of them to spawn in same room same place ? I suppose one exotic/special is guaranteed in there, but 2 of the same? I don't know. It felt weird that's all.
I can also provide a screenshot if needed.

Discussion / Nightmare! difficulty not Accessible to slow players
« on: March 28, 2013, 06:07 »
Yesterday I learned the "hard way", that I should have never tried to play nightmare.
No I'm not talking about the difficulty which yes it is absurd, but I'm talking about the fact that you can't even save your game and come back to it later. What's up with that? How come?
You do realize you block players completely with this... Some of us enjoy this game playing at our own leisure and we also have work in the mornings/noons and can rarely play consecutively for more than 1 or 2 hours. It's pretty obvious a nightmare run is impossible in such a short time length.
My experience in this game is mainly from HMP and UV games. Some of you here have seen few mortems I've posted recently, I take my time in my games, that's how I enjoy doomrl, so I usually do 5 to 10 hours for each normal run, entering as many special levels as I can and playing carefully, it's just my style I can't play faster really, it's a tactical game after all.
But I made the mistake of thinking that I could give a try to nightmare too. With all that corpse resurrection and gibbing and thinking you must do just to "survive" and not die, how the hell am I to finish any run (I know I can't with my current skills, but even if I could) if I can never even save my game? ... I just cannot understand the logic behind it...
It's probably the only real complaint I have, for an otherwise great and free community game.
PS: For the record I had to quit the game before the arena due to a RL reason...

Post Mortem / [U|100%|YAAM] Gatekeeper Diamond, Beretta & a shit load of drops
« on: March 26, 2013, 15:12 »
First full run with 0.9.9.7G , got my first diamond too, so many of the special levels were truly a surprise and a great new experience too.
Thank God they were not enough to destroy the run, got scared many times, but made it in the end with a bit of luck! :P
Tried the random name too for first time, can't say I loved the result but oh well. :P
It got dangerous in some of the normal but also special levels, but late game was truly a breeze with loads of nukes and inv. globes.
Loads of drops, medpacks, exotics and uniques too, with the Beretta medal being the tip of the iceberg I guess. ^^
Anyway here goes:
(yeah i Know it's almost 10 hours... I become real careful on such runs lol...)
I had tried to get Anomaly damageless with the cateye build a few times, but always something unexpected happened and I got hit, or the phase just failed to get me where I wanted it to.
This time I got lucky though, mainly with the Phase Device in the Anomaly and the fast kill of the two bruiser brothers with a tactical shotty. Got teleported next to the hellgate got a bit up with running and hid behind the pillar. One bruiser brother approached from the top. Easy corner-shooting and reloading with the tactical shotty. At some point while shooting him, the 2nd one seemed to be going the other side around. The pattern was unpredictable the way he was moving. Thankfully he changed his mind and went left again approaching from the same top where the other was. This was their biggest mistake. I just kept knockbacking both together with the same shrapnels over and over and over with cover obviously. After a while they just died. :)
After that (wall of text)
Tbh with the above exceptions after the hyperblaster with Firestorm mod and finally getting enough ammunition which was 100% filled in the easy mode-Vaults, the rest of the game was very very easy, a walk in the park actually. Especially when I got juggler too. I love this trait. I find it great for rapid-fire builds. :P
Limbo was nuked with INV while I got the nuclear BFG with a phase (!!), Mount Erebus was too easy by now with the Cyberdemon boots I had made, everything died with 1 or 2 hyperblaster shots. Found much stuff on late levels including a Medical Power Armor, a Blaster, gothic boots and even a Minigun, but honestly I needed nothing of those.
And even at Spider Mastermind I got an invulnerability from last level and walked up to him like a gentleman, emptied the beretta in 2 shots with TH on full automatic mode, emptied the hyperblaster and finally killed it with two BFG shots.
Beretta is srsly a BEAST, wish I had found it on my AoMr runs...
I did forget to keep a nuke for mastermind though, so it couldn't be a full win facing JC. Who cares though? :P
SORRY for the HUGE post I got carried away....DAMN...
PS : And to think this run was just for the UAC Gold in the beginning. I'm pretty sure this is by far the easiest Diamond btw. Others will require much better skills which I currently don't have.
Thank God they were not enough to destroy the run, got scared many times, but made it in the end with a bit of luck! :P

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Ok now that was one damn lucky ride.
Hardest parts were by far the mortuary and JC, I don't even know why I risked going there. I'll think about it twice before doing that again in the future on UV...
The real reason that made me enter mortuary was the fact that I had a nano pack, and wanted to get a power mod asap to make a powered red armor for survivability purposes. The RNG luckily had given me 3 hatred skulls in City of skulls (only kept 2 though) and 2 shockwave packs (an overkill but whatever) though nothing else in terms of a good shotgun or armor. I managed to use all of those in mortuary. Elephant gun and tactical shotgun were good enough with 3 shell packs I had saved till then. Careful use and planning of both elephant gun and plasmatic shrapnel for gibbing also helped a bit, as well as the extra skill levels in TAN and Ironman. While berserked I was practically invincible. However once the zerk ended, I'd only finished half the level, I really thought I'd try to get some stuff and leave the cursed place, but before knowing it I was pressing the right side after finishing the left, with loads of shotgun shells and not caring much either. The remaining archviles had gotten on my nerves as it seems...It was more stubbornness than logic. Used most of my large medpacks in there, as well as WAY too much ammo. I don't think I'll do that again. I did get good xp, but I don't think it was really worth the ammo and consumables spent nor the risk... I swear I got at least 2-3 times near 20% life. And the damned baron of hells and commandos seemed to get all the medpacks and armors in the level before me... pff. Mancubi in Mortuary are not a nice addition either, though they did help a bit with the gibbing I can't deny it.
After nuking lava pits and getting enviro boots, I thought of trying for a full win, since the char seemed powerful enough with the army of the dead build and the powered red armor. I also had a phase device and 3 large medpacks.
Little did I know of JC's new summons in UV. He started with lost souls, hell knights and summoned at least twice barons of hell and another 2-3 times minimum dozens of revenants!! At some point I got completely surrounded by the damn homing missile critters!! I was missing my damn BFG. Armor almost destroyed along with my hopes, life too little to survive another turn and weapon ofc unloaded. Last resort, I phase. Thank GOD I got on the left side of the map... Spent some turns there and voila, the armor was back to 100%. Seriously these nanomod armors some times feel almost like cheating. :P
Anyway for some stupid reason JC had still tagged me from miles away, and I occasionally saw a dodge or two. At least I couldn't get hit due to distance as it seemed. Or not? The place was overrun with revenants though, so you can imagine how happy I was that at least plenty of those seemed to die from JC's rockets. xD
Continued pressing to the right killing revenants with the elephant gun at max range with sidesteps. Had not the faintest idea of where JC was. I don't really know what happened but I never really saw JC. It seems I killed him off-screen at some point in this shootout and the end credits rolled before knowing it, just by shooting at revenants (you can see the rockets dropped in the pic in the mortem)... Now what I'll probably never ever understand is how the hell I got that lucky and got 100% kills on this trip too. Wasn't even trying for it. The common and logical thing would be to forget some revenants alive or barons of hell at least in this last level. No idea why they all died... I guess this was a present of sorts, from JC... ??
Got a platinum badge, an xp AND a rank promotion so I guess all is good. :)
As it seems Duke Nukem was too "tough" to die. xD
Oh well, on to my next challenge. After winning with Aob/AoMr on HMP, AoMC on UV and now AoSh, I'm thinking of trying some of the other challenges. Some of them seem absurdly hard.
Funny thing is that I had also tried once or twice AoSh in HNTR in some of my first games in doomrl and I never even reached Cybie on those tries. Was a rooky at that time. Since then though, I've learned a ton of things in the game and playing those few full runs in HMP/UV in AoMr/Aob and AoMc really helped in improving playstyle.
Was also wondering if it's worth it to try latest release of doomrl to see the new special levels too, but to tell the truth I'm afraid of potential crash/gamebreaking bugs and was thinking of waiting for an initial patch or something first.
