Discussion / Re: Some Ammochain thoughts
« on: April 10, 2010, 09:32 »
I'd rather ammochain still require the player to reload, just that reloading takes no ammo from your backpack. Imagine the player lugging around a chain of trolleys full of ammo clips external to his backpack. This way the reloader trait remains useful, and ammochain is less obscenely powerful.

Berserk of course! Why would you want diabloRL? There are so many generic dungeon crawlers already. Just play angband or something. Berserk is unique and therefore much more interesting!

1 showed that it can outsmart hell itself.

--------------------------------------------------------------
Managed on my first try, not sure how much of that was due to luck. I normally play on UV or N!, but the joint conditions of RA and 100% made it difficult in its own unique way. Forces a different playstyle than my usual plodding approach.

The idea was to beeline to Intuition 2, so as to not waste time on finding enemies wandering halfway across the map into already explored rooms. Mained shotguns initially, transitioning to chaingun by the end of Chained Courts. If MAD wasn't blocked by Eagle Eye, I would've considered sticking with shotguns.

Resisted the urge to start using Anti-Freak Jackal, since I knew it'd just blow up all the ammo I'd need for it :P

Health packs and armour were never a problem for some reason, but ammo definitely was through all of Hell. During one level I only had rockets left! I was thankful for perhaps the first time ever at finding a couple arachno caves, as they supplied me with enough plasma to actually kill cybie at the end - I suspect I'd have been screwed otherwise.

All in all, an intense, but very doable challenge!

The open door was what was left of the room's wall, just after opening it. I actually survived: closed door, engaged running, moved to the left, revealing 2 arch viles and a couple more mancubi, got behind the wall and double shottied them all from around the wall.

Just a couple levels prior, I was completely out of shotgun ammo on an arena level, dancing around barons and such, trying to get them to kill shotgun guys without nuking the ammo. Fun game.

Edit: Managed a partial win. Just didn't have the health supply reserves to deal with the damage I was receiving vs what I could dish out. If I hadn't run out of shotgun ammo partway through hell, and burned most of my armour/health trying to find some, I think I could've beaten him. Oh well, was still fun :)

Bug Reports / Crash upon death in Hell's Arena
« on: October 25, 2009, 07:06 »

Version Type: win_nosound
Platform: Windows 7

Was playing AoSh on UV, second round of Hell's Arena, fired combat shotgun at a cacodemon, then it fires at me killing me and crashing the game.

I've died a couple other times in AoSh UV in Hell's Arena, so I don't think it's specific to that.

I've attached a screenshot showing the dump.

Discussion / Re: Sensing Levers
« on: January 23, 2009, 23:16 »
I have a method to using levers.

1) Don't pull them if there are nearby barrels that can't be moved out of the way. If the room is small, make sure to check outside of it too.

2) Don't pull them unless the walk to outside the room only goes through 1 in-room tile at the maximum. If the lever is near a wall, try to arrange barrel or rocket explosions such that you destroy part of the wall to allow quick escape without destroying the lever.

Obviously, if you have a spare envirokit you can ignore 2), and with invul you can ignore both.

I miss out on a bunch of levers, but the levers I do pull almost never kill me.

Requests For Features / Advanced weapon presence notification
« on: January 21, 2009, 04:17 »
I was thinking, that given the rarity of advanced weapons and the trait investment in a whizkid build, perhaps their presence in a level could be announced similar to how uniques are? Similarly, the item destruction message uniques are due to receive.

Discussion / SoB vs Armor question

Was doing some damage calcs, and was wondering, does the damage bonus from SoB, SoG, Brute, etc apply before or after the target's armor damage reduction?

Haven't played for a couple weeks, thought AoRa would be an interesting challenge.

Video:
http://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php?topic=1222.msg14706#msg14706

The dosrecorder video is unfortunately only partial. Around hell 2 or 3, I spawned next to something silly, so I thought I'd take a break for a bit. Forgot to hit the resume button on dosrecorder when I came back though :/ Resumes around lava pits. Damn shame, since those levels were probably the most intense out of the lot, with arch vile groups becoming common.

AoRa was a real mind bender for me, since I'm used to taking things very slowly, cautiously, killing every moving exp chunk and saving powerups for later where appropriate. AoRa forces you to rush, leaving parts of the level undiscovered, and use powerups when you find them, except if they're next to the exit stairs. It's a real ball breaker to see a damage mod just a little too far away to both retrieve it and make it down the stairs in time. In this particular run, I managed to clear Hell's Arena, but didn't have enough time to pick up the rocket launcher, which was basically the point in doing it in the first place. Managed to pick up a random rocket launcher later though for The Wall.

This particular run was fairly lucky. By the end I had 3x Durability modded red armors, and a gothic armor. Spotted 2 advanced chainguns. 2 closely spaced invul globes on level 24. No particularly good uniques though: never used gothic armor; phase boots are ok but got them very late-game.

I chose H instead of UV because I am lazy. UV has an accuracy improvement to enemy projectiles, meaning my lazy "fire from the edge of their field of view" method of projectile avoidance stops working at UV. My general laziness also results in many mistakes, so don't take the video too seriously.

Hm that's about it I guess? Probably won't be doing any more games until the new version is out.

Managed a successful HMP Angel of Red Alert game. After doing that Masochism game before, I've become very lazy, so I make lots of mistakes, but oh well!

Video cuts out Around hell 2 or 3 when I spawn next to a bunch of formers and arch viles. Thought it was a good time to take a break, but forgot to press resume in dosrecorder when I got back :/ The group was actually no sweat, since running over to the right made them trapped against the lava at sniping range. Video resumes at lava pits.

I tried to have them as close to their originals as possible, given the constraints.

Had to cut out the top and bottom secret rooms in Grosse though, so I plonked some of the items into the start room, and some into previously empty pillars. By having them in these pillars, one has to be very careful in using rockets to blow the outer wall, but not the goodies inside. Would probably have to aim rockets at the level's perimeter wall and use the blast's splash to achieve that.

You could otherwise hide them in the top/bottom left/right corners of the map if you wanted to, like those hidden segments in chained court.

There's some decorative lights, pillars, corpses, etc that I haven't put in.

I coloured the nazi troops dark red because I figure they're fairly close mechanically to captains. And dark blue on black is horrendous on my eyes.

Come to think of it, that would make a melee Ao100 game slightly less impossible.
I was under the impression that the difficulty factor in a melee Ao100 wouldn't be from lack of dealt damage so much as a surplus of incoming damage, from having to close in on everything. A melee'er with all the relevent traits deals enough damage to down lesser creatures in one hit, and the bigger ones not much longer than that.

SoG is useless for a melee character, so none would get the trait then.
Yeh I forgot to mention that I would change the pre-reqs of course. I'd probably dump it under finesse, since I figure one needs a bit of finesse to be ambidextrously coordinated. In order to make finesse more tempting to melee'ers, I'd apply its effects to melee attacks as well as ranged attacks. Maybe just fin(1) instead of fin(2).

My take on it would be to ignore the juggler free melee hit thing, and merge dual-gunner into a single trait that allows any one-handed weapons to be dual-wielded, carrying over the same speed penalty. What constitutes "one-handed" would be the pistols and knives category. Not sure if I'd include the chainsaw as a "knife". Longinus Spear and DragonSlayer are definitely out.

As for the person who said 2x knives would break AoB, look at these numbers.
Note that A is the target's armor.
I'm assuming that all melee weapons currently have base firing speeds of 1s.
I'm assuming 100% accuracy for simplicity sake.

Chainsaw:
firing speed
=1s,
damage
=4d6-A
=[4,24]-A
=14-A average
damage/time
=14-A

2xKnives:
firing speed
=1.2s,
damage
=(2d5-A)x2
=([2,10]-A)x2
=[4,20]-2A
=12-2A average
damage/time
=(12-2A)/1.2
=10-A-(2/3)A

Difference
=(14-A) - (10-A-(2/3)A)
=4+(2/3)A

Chainsaw averages 4+(2/3)A more damage than dual knives per one unit of time.

Note that even if the dual-wield time penalty is removed, the dual knives still deal less damage.

I also found Juggler to be very useful on my Ao100 win, though having pistols may invalidate that approach.
In one of my better masochism games, I switched between a blaster and an advanced rocket launcher. It worked very well, and with juggler would work even better. Dual wielding pistols carries a speed penalty, and if your offhand pistol is crap, then single wielding a powerful pistol is actually better. I took down cybie once fairly easily with a single heavily modded advanced pistol.
