I didn't know about this advantage because I never use the mouse. Yea it is pretty unfair...

Well, I use keyboard almost all the time. If I want to, say, spray nuclear plasma across the whole map blindly for a while (such as in lava pits), I just grab mouse for a while. Problem solved.
Except that this doesn't work in console mode...

Yeah, EE is probably the best opening move for a vanilla UV game. Because you're getting a much-needed early chaingun and you need it to be effective at kicking ass.
As for sucking at this game -- practice, you WILL get better at it, really. :P And it may seem counterintuitive, but if I've had a DoomRL hiatus and my skills have rusted a bit, a good way to get started again is actually to play HMP or UV. It'll be incredibly hard but it trains/warms up your skills as rocket speed, at least if you're really trying.
(note: I play this game for years and years now and I myself can count the amount of UV games I ever actually won on one hand... so it's not like I'm incredibly good at it either)

Also the fact that running under the tileset doesn't put the whole floor on the screen at once.
I love the ascii version, it just feels more responsive than the graphical version, what with not having to wait for the tiles to slide into place...

Yea besides just generally not liking tiles, this and this are exactly the other main reasons why I stick to ASCII

ASCII.
The DoomRL tile mode is very well done, both graphically and program-wise, but for RLs I've just never been a fan of tiles in general.

On a side note: I wish special level stairs would appear as a < rather than a >.
I know this traditionally signifies an upward staircase, so it doesn't make much sense in that regard... but eh it's pretty annoying that you have to (l)ook at it if you have some visual effect going on.
