Title: Text messages instead sounds (especially wailing)
Post by: Little green man on June 27, 2012, 00:56
Hello, Chaosforge.

I play this magnificent rogue-like game for about a couple of months and deeply enjoy it. But I wanted to ask if some sounds could be removed by messages.

Its a vital part of the game - to hear monsters wailing outside your view (especially when they far away, or when you corner-shoot) - so it nice to set your sound volume at maximum. And, of course, everyone in house start to know, that you are battling against evil, when you do so. But sometimes you really don't want your nearest (or neighbors) knowing you play Doom.

So, please, tell me how to make program show text messages instead of playing sound files (especially this far-wailing), if its already possible. Or it will be great if such thing could be done next version. Thank you for further answers.

P.S.: Sorry for my English.

I proposed the similar thing in my topic:

It is good to see that more people want such a change :) .

You might want to get headphones. The sounds won't bother anybody and you will be able to hear more clearly.

There are times when you have to play with no sound, though. It would be nice to have some sort of alternative.

I'd certainly appreciate this option as well.

I don't want to wake the kids and I don't really want to go digging for headphones just for this.

Currently I play with music volume really low and sound volume low but just loud enough that I can tell apart shotgun sounds and monster wails. This is still a bit awkward in practice so having the sounds optionally as text would be a big improvement.

I could do this but it would be opt-in "deaf" mode. I wouldn't do it by default, because it would spam the message log too much.

Thank you for answers.
And thank you for game, DoomRL is amazing.

P.S.: i really think, that "*missile* hit something" (for corner shoot) and "you hear distant wail (roar, etc)" (for distant monster) will be enough and will not expose messages too mutch

"you hear distant wail (roar, etc)"
And I was just hoping to read a zombie "grunt", or a Baron going all "WAAARGH!" on me...

Anyways, leaving jokes aside, having a "deaf" mode would be a nice thing, because deaf people aren't a mythical being on par with unicorns. They need their chance to enjoy the game, and all that, but that would be difficult if they don't hear shit.

Absolutely agree.
More options to the God of Options :D

Yeah, a toggleable "deaf" mode  is something that I've wanted for quite a while. I wonder if it would be possible for the *heavy breathing* and *wail* words to actually float out of the side of the screen where the noises are coming from, instead of the messages all being at the top.

I think Caves of Qud handles some alerts like that.

Deaf mode is a great idea. Sadly, it will not stop *me* from making sounds when I play, which is still going to wake up the room-mates and neighbors whenever I get a 'zerker pack and declare that I am in fact, a man and a half at the top of my lungs.
