Discussion / Re: Doom maps in DoomRL

BTW, how about a contest for a ( DoomRL size ) special level to be included in the game? :D

Original special level or DoomRL version of FPS Doom level? In any case, I'm all for it.

And indeed I had them. The problem is, Lava pits are guarded. And since you can carry only a limited amount of envirosuits, you are forced to break through enemy forces rather than take your time and do things properly. And Gothic Boots are just not worth the resources needed to pass Lava Pits. So naturally, I was a bit... disappointed.

Mine is synonimous with the words boots. And gothic. So gothic boots, than.
Because nothing beats spending a king's arsenal of ammo, armor and medkits trying to get to the end of the Lava Pits only to find some useless boots. Really unforgetable experiance it was, really.

Just to relate my experience:

My very first visit to the UC (a couple of builds ago) was a victory, despite the fact that a was playing a non-melle character then. At that time I was still lugging around my chainsaw just for fun, and i just so happened to pick up an inv. globe just before the stairs to the Cathedral. Result - killed the Angel without losing a single hp.

OK, my memory may be a little misty 'cause i played this game quite some time ago. But i will share my strategies the way i remember them.

A) The most probable way to die in this game is to run out of ammo. To solve this problem, go to storage tower immediatly after the beginning of the game (it's just north of the civilian tower, where you begin). Stay there until you get a shotgun and possibly a magnum.

B) The goal of the game is to kill the queen; to do so, you will need some heavy firepower to get rid of the elites around her. Queen herself is no weakling, either. Smartgun is my weapon of choice here, with at least 50 units of ammo. Military tower is the place to find this toy, and possibly a power armor (the tower is west of storage tower).

C) Speaking of Elites. Those bastards are sure to spoil your picnic, so anti-elite measures are a must. Krak granades can kill them in one hit. Plasma rifle is good here, too. If you don't have this weapons, magnum can save the day. Failing that, the starting equipment can sort 'em out with a few medpacks. Just don't use your shotgun, it can't punch through elite's armor.

D) Watch out for randomly spawning hunters. They hurt. A lot.

E) If you have the ability, explore as much as you can. It gives major exp bonuses.

F) Draw the maps of the levels, especially note where the lifts are. You'll need them on your way out. I failed my game twice because i didn't know where those damn lifts are.

G) About classes: i found out that the scout works the best for me. But any class except medic and the tech guy (forgot the proper name) will do, really.

H) The most important note: DO NOT PRESS CTRL C! NEVER DO THAT. You don't want to end up losing your game after hours of playtime.

That is all. I belive i left a video of of one of my runs in the video topic. It's long and boring and full of me doing stupid things, but it does illustrate some of my points.

PS: Have you noticed that the corresponding up and down elevators spawn on different parts of the floors. Say an up elevator is in the NW part of the floor, but if you take it up you and up in the NE part of the next floor. So if the elevators in the year 2200 are the same as our elevators, than the towers should look like this:

from the outside. Which is silly.

Requests For Features / Envirosuits suggestion.
« on: July 13, 2008, 09:44 »
Reading the pool results, i found out that the envirosuit was one of the more unpopular items out there. So, after some thinking, i came up with a way to make it more useful.

Envirosuits protect from acid, don't they? And it just so happens that hell knights and barons seem to throw green projectiles, which are probably made of acid too. So my suggestion is this: make envirosuits give you an immunity (or at least a serious protection bonus) against those green balls, which will make them infinitely more useful, on par with other items.

Discussion / Re: The Big DoomRL Poll!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Yeah, i still remember how much i howled in rage while playing Counter-strike Condition Zero. The boss of the penultimate stage, who was just a simple drug baron, took three AK74 clips to the head untill he droped dead. Surprisingly, the most realistic game in this aspect was the game called Cobra Mission (a game with a really unrealistic setting and gameplay): the general of the military part of the town couldn't even lift a gun at you after you beat his henchmen.

Discussion / Re: An Idea of mine.... the BPD....
« on: July 05, 2008, 06:25 »
This is going off-topic, but anyway:

1)The railgun i was talking about is actually the "real" railgun, which is an electricity-based gun which fires metal rails (or slugs). And it was actually tested by US navy.

The gun which fires magnetic projectiles is called a coilgun. And yeah, in Quake III railgun ammo is called "slugs".

2) I won't argue on this one, since it's my policy to keep quite on subjects i know next to nothing about. But i have to agree that scientists do like to make up silly names. I mean, really: all those talks about "dark energy"
and "dark matter" sound like those guys got drunk, read a lot of terrible science fiction and decided to make up theories.

Also, when i talked about the gun beeing machinegun-like, i meant that had a shape similar to a machinegun. And no rapid fire.

And i also have a suggestion: How about  making BPD a melle weapon that is better than the chainsaw, but consumes energy cells. It will than have an ability to overcharge it (like the plasmagun), maing it an one hit kill weapon, but losing it in the process. We really need more non-unique melle weapons. DoomRL has only 3 now, two of which only spawn on special levels.

Read the topic and felt i should reply. Well, to my mind running around with a machinegun-like injector and an evil grin, while cool, would indeed be "undoomish". With a little refinement, though, the idea will work. I once played this game, X-com 2(a faint ghost of what X-com 1 was with all that Ctulhu mimickry and a strange tech tree, but still a good game).Yeah, so in that game a weapon named thermic lance existed:

The concepts are pretty close, and i feel thermic lance is doomish enough. So maybe making some tweakings to the initial idea of BPD would do the trick of making it more doomish.

And while i'm here, i just can't resist but to do some nitpicking:

1) Railgun is supposed to fire slugs, not plasma. I think in DoomRL it fires energy cells because any other existing ammunition does not fit.

2) While i have never heard of a potential plasma-based life, i've heard something about a possible life being based on Silicon and a couple of other elements. Some elements show similarities with Carbon (and all life we know is carbon-based), Si being one of them. So in theory, silicon life is possible (as Pamela Anderson goes to show). But it will require a much higher temperature to survive, somewhere around  800-1000 C.

Requests For Features / Re: Disable ^C
« on: June 24, 2008, 04:37 »
I support this request. I once lost a character in AliesRL to this accursed key combination, because shift+c (character advancement screen) and ctrl+c (instant quit) were hazardously close to each other. And this character was already on his way to escape...

In DoomRL there is no command close to this keys, but  it's still a pity to lose an advanced character.
