Post Mortem / [U|100%|AoMr|YAAM] Marksman Platinum + Heroic Gold (Actual video this time)
« on: February 22, 2017, 14:17 »
Finally finished Marksman Platinum, after way too many attempts. I was screwing around playing a Marine, and... Bullet Dance is actually pretty damn powerful. The RNG was kind, giving me the GCB before Babel, and early on in hell a Combat Pistol, which I was later able to mod into an Energy Combat Pistol, so by the end of the game I was dual wielding two of the most powerful handguns in the game and putting out scary amounts of both Plasma and Bullet damage.
With this build, I actually went for SoG3 before starting SoB, even though it meant slowing down my mastery, because of lessons learned from ZicherCZ and confirmed via play experience afterwards. I also ended up maxing it by the end of the game, so between those two godlike pistols, SoG5, SoB2, and the extra shots per trigger pull from MBD, the Mastermind was never able to stop flinching. I had equipped a gothic armor I found to keep me safe from its attacks, but it never had a chance to make any. I had to cover to reload once, but was able to step back out and finish the fight safely, earning both the Mastermind's Brain, and finally the Grammaton Cleric Cross, my 24th unique medal, which also meant I finished up Heroic Gold.
This run was also streamed and appears to have been successfully recorded(still don't know what's going on with my Elite Platinum video), so as soon as it's processed, I'll make links available. I had to switch locations mid-run, as I was playing outside(really nice weather for this time of year here) but the glare from the sun was making it very difficult to see certain things(especially enemies tracked by the Tracking Map but not directly visible), so it'll be in two parts. Part 1 includes a few earlier attempts, and this run up to the Anomaly, and Part 2 is Deimos and Hell.
Edit: Looks like YouTube merged them, so it's all available in a single video here. Commentary, advice, or feedback of any kind on the run is welcome either here or in the video comments section.

Post Mortem / [U|100%|YAAM|YAFW] First ever Conqueror win + video
« on: February 20, 2017, 21:43 »
Edit: Still waiting on YouTube... meanwhile, the title has promised a video, so here's a failed Marksman Platinum attempt(or part of one, the second half of the stream doesn't seem to be available yet) that finished my Technician Platinum.
I've been alternating between Marksman Platinum and Elite Platinum attempts, and Elite won first - which is nice, because as my first ever conqueror win it comes with a whole bunch of medals I've never received before and a few bonus badges. I also managed to sneak in my first damageless Hell Arena, so there's that.
The run went very smoothly until the end of Hell... I'd never cleared the Mortuary before, so it started to break down about there as I was unprepared for it and used more medkits then I needed, both there and on subsequent levels. Hell 7 was rather brutal, and I was down to my last two medkits, wondering whether I ought to risk a full win attempt, knowing all the rest of my achievements up to that point could be lost(I'd have kept some stuff, like Armorer Gold and the Hell Arena Key, of course, but the Conqueror run would have been lost). I decided to go for it, remembering my last attempt as MVm with the Scythe, and this time I had a BFG to help.
The end result is one of my most impressive mortems to date, including 100% kill rate, conqueror, full win, and damageless arena on UV. Still not much compared to those of you doing the same thing on Nightmare!, but I'm pretty proud of it anyway.
Bonus: I had decided to stream to my YouTube channel tonight, following the example of some others here who record their games occasionally, so once that's finished processing, I'll link the video. I believe I've got the whole run, and there's some sort of commentary if my mic decided to work, so it should be interesting to review that afterwards =P

Nightmare! / [N!|26%|YAVP] UAC Gold+Plat+Diamond/Speedrunner Silver+Gold/Longinus Plat
« on: February 19, 2017, 15:37 »
I'm beginning to like Speedrunning - might become the new Sereging, except it's actually legit.
Started with HR, grabbed Int next to locate powerups, then into Bru->Bru->Ber. I think I stopped Berserking only once or twice after the chained court, and put it right back on almost immediately each time. Early double A mods and a steel boots drop got me tactical boots for even faster speed on top of HR, and I got really lucky with large medkits along my paths to the stairs, and had way more then I could have needed on a run like this. I was mostly trying to skip special levels - went into Abyssal Plains by accident while invulnerable(I can tell special stairs apart while berserking, but not while invulnerable), but luckily I was able to fight my way to the stairs and dip out of there. I almost skipped UC, but then I realized that not only was it easily doable at that point, but would also give me Longinus Platinum and the Spear would make the rest of the run even easier, so I went and did that.
All in all, another sub-15 Nightmare win(though Speedrunner Angelic is still looking impossible), with a pretty solid badge haul. I am now a lot closer to full General, and my prospects for advancing past that are good, given that I still have two free Platinums coming up with Technician and Armorer.

Century Lounge / [U|100%|Ao100|YAAM] Centurial Platinum + Lt. General
« on: February 17, 2017, 20:44 »
Typical Ao100 - too easy once it gets rolling. Opted for nanoskin armor to shore up my completed assemblies, and just as well since I didn't find Malek till the very last level(and never found O mod, so if I'd waited for cybernano, which I'm also missing, I would have been disappointed). Nuclear Burst Cannon is pretty legit, but let's be real, I was meleeing just about everything by the end.
Tried a different build path then I normally do, taking Bru->Bru->Ber before completing MAc, for survivability, and it worked quite well. Going berserk makes everything a hell of a lot easier, since I can run up to viles and other nasty things and take them down, and I can take quite a lot of abuse(especially with a nanoskin red!) without having to worry about dying.
This was the last Platinum I needed for Lt General, so I've almost returned to my former glory - just a few more Cyberdemons for the experience rank, and then it's time to actually improve. Platinum #10 should be easy, as I'm one advanced assembly(environmental boots, which I forgot existed and so made Cerberus instead) from Technician, and Armorer should also be easily doable(albeit a long way away, 337/1000 atm) with enough grinding, so all that leaves is one to make full General. Looking at Marksman, but I *hate* pistols(I don't have the slightest clue how Arena Gold is even possible), so we'll see.

Post Mortem / [U|100%|AoCn|YAAM|YAFW] Daredevil Platinum attempt went better then expected...
« on: February 14, 2017, 23:33 »
I'd been having a lot of difficulty with this challenge, attempting special levels because of course that's what you do when you've never tried them before... Several attempts ended at the Wall, a few at Deimos Lab(which I eventually quit attempting), and many at the Armory. This time I skipped them all, and had quite good luck with items and mods regardless. An early super shotgun was very helpful, as was an Onyx mod that went onto a set of Red armor that served me very well until I brilliantly forgot that Cybernetic is cursed, and all but screwed myself out of the run completely. Very careful play, tactical use of MVm, and some lucky level layouts saw me through to the end, fortunately.
Other fortuitous events included an Invulnerability on Deimos 7 for damageless Cyberdemon, and finding the Butcher's Cleaver, making UC even easier then it already was with MVm and securing me Azrael's Scythe(courtesy of the 100% kill requirement on Daredevil Platinum), which, coupled with a healthy stack of medkits, got me Scavenger Diamond at the Vaults.
This badge haul got me Major General, and I'm now only one Platinum away from my former rank of Lieutenant General, with more Diamonds and Angelics then I had before, so as long as I can keep finishing Platinum challenges, I can promote a few more skill ranks without too much trouble before the real pain begins...

Nightmare! / [N!|AoSh+AoOC|80%|YAVP] Daredevil Diamond, Shottyman Diamond, Shottyman Angelic
« on: February 10, 2017, 22:27 »
And another one.
Figured I had it on the old profile, might as well get it back on this one. Easy as Angelic badges go, but as always it takes a lot of attempts and farming for 80% is quite the grind.
I suspect 2 Angelic Badges a day is a pace I will not be able to maintain, however =P

Nightmare! / [N!|ArchAoTravel|24%|YAVP] Lightfoot Platinum/Diamond/Angelic
« on: February 10, 2017, 13:33 »
First Angelic for this profile, second earned overall, and first Nightmare! win without AoOC. This one might even be easier then Shottyman, as it's less luck dependant - once I got a feel for it, I was generally able to make it to Babel or better if I got through the early game safely. Despite being a full playthrough, it's also not very time consuming - might turn around and pick up Speedrunner Gold after this, as it should be trivial compared to this run.
Early attempts using pistols were quickly abandoned, followed by a shotgun approach, which made it down to the Cyberdemon and got soundly stomped. The trick for me was to build as if for melee, grabbing the chainsaw and holding it in reserve for the bossfights. Berserker was a huge help for survival, anyway, and the run probably wouldn't have been possible without it. My inventory for most of the game was a stack of shells and a large medkit, and I'd replenish either as necessary. If I ever ran low on shells, I just played like a pacifist and ran for the stairs, rather then risking an accidental melee kill. Cyberdemon and Mastermind were handled with melee until they displayed (almost dead), then finished with the shotgun. Mastermind almost got me during that part, as she took 3-4 shotgun blasts to finish, but the medkit I was carrying saved the day and allowed me to finish the run.

Post Mortem / [H|92%|AoD+AoOC|YAVP] More Sereging nets Hunter Silver and Gold
« on: February 05, 2017, 23:05 »
Not too difficult given HMP and a few lucky levels where I was able to camp respawns for killcount(Hunter Gold wants 80%) and ammo drops. Opened with Intuition to be sure I could secure Mastermind safely, so I never quite managed to finish Shottyhead, but shotguns were my go-to for the entire game.
One more gold for the next skill rank, then maybe I'll look at more impressive challenges.

Post Mortem / [H|23%|AoLT|YAVP] Lightfoot Silver, Gold, Pla... no? No Platinum? Okay...
« on: February 05, 2017, 12:28 »
Lightfoot Platinum calls for completion of AoLT in 20000 turns, with no difficulty level or time limit or other caveat specified. My turncount is 7775. What gives? I seem to remember encountering this issue before on my old profile, so I'll check my posting history and see if I ever discovered the reason...
Edit: Can't find that particular issue, but I did find an AoLT mortem on UV that did produce the platinum, so maybe that's a hidden requirement for the badge =P

« on: February 02, 2017, 22:38 »
And another one.
Lots of tries to get this going, as always - Sereging is very unhealthy for one's KDR. Gothic Armor on Hell 1, coupled with a lucky Invulnerability, helped immensely with the Mancubus Complex I spawned in, and the armor tanked AoD very nicely, but I switched to lighter armor as I descended, since it's very difficult to be an effective Angel of Berserk when you're -70% Movespeed and can't even take HR. Unfortunately all my lighter armor was destroyed in short order, so I ran naked and scared through a lot of the later levels, using up all of my medkits along the way. Luckily, heavy armor is very effective for the Mastermind, so while I had no remaining means of healing, I wasn't taking enough damage to be concerning, and berserk finally proc'd, allowing me to finish the fight and complete the run.

Post Mortem / [U|100%|AoMC+AoRA|YAAM] Quartermaster Diamond + more
« on: February 02, 2017, 13:58 »
I've been working on this one for awhile - the early game's a giant pain in the ass. Once the build gets rolling, though, it gets pretty easy - Intuition->Cateye makes it safe and simple to snipe(or blast) enemies before they can get in range, multiple levels of HR and Finesse reduce time passage significantly, and those Phase Boots and an ample supply of A modkits didn't hurt. The only real issue was Ammo - I started dropping medkits as I realized I wasn't really using them, and collecting large quantities of Energy Cells on the levels where I found them, so that issue went away. Managed to find invulnerability on Hell 7, so damageless Mastermind was trivial, since my damage output with HP Plasma Rifle and AoMC was more then enough to finish her before the duration lapsed.
Not sure how doable this badge would be without the AoMC pairing allowed by the Dual Angel challenge mode. Max Carnage synergizes well with the safety of the build, and the extra accuracy and damage is paramount to clearing levels in time. Quartermaster Angelic, requiring AAoRA and so disallowing Dual Angel mode, as well as more then halving the time limit(even with the lower kill percentage requirement), is probably not realistically possible - but then that seems to be true of many Angelic challenges.

...and I'm definitely out of practice.
I'm a few gold badges short of my next skill rank, so I was trying to knock out UAV and Veteran in one go, with my default Shottyman -> Ammochain -> Whizkid build. I think I devoted too many inventory slots to future Whizkid assemblies, because I didn't have enough armors and heals to survive the situation involving Viles and Mancubi that ended up finishing me. I may have to take a look at some of the other Golds remaining open before I try for these again, and get back into practice.

Not without incident, indeed.
Even managed to find the Grammaton Cleric Beretta as the first and only unique of the run.
Probably should have run from the archviles, rather then try to dual-reload in the LOS of three of them... ah well, I'm rusty.

-- General ---------------------------------------------------
337 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
312 of those were killed.
2 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 14 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.
9 souls destroyed the Mastermind...
1 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
7 killed the bitch and survived.
1 showed that it can outsmart Hell itself.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Even managed to find the Grammaton Cleric Beretta as the first and only unique of the run.
Probably should have run from the archviles, rather then try to dual-reload in the LOS of three of them... ah well, I'm rusty.
