Requests For Features / Re: Remove Chained Court
« on: December 25, 2007, 14:07 »
You know ? Remove the surface level ! It's a routine ! Or change foos for Arachnotrons ! :P

It's entirely different. The thing about the surface level is that there's variety there. Sometimes you get all the health-packs, sometimes you only get a couple (sometimes you get none, and smash your keyboard in rage). And sometimes the monsters get lucky with their hits and actually do considerable damage. You have to concentrate and play well to minimise this damage.

As for Arachnotrons, considering there are 5 sources of berserk there, and considering the layout of the level, it'd still be too easy. And you'd gain a disproportionate amount of experience. Perhaps changing the layout would help.

Requests For Features / Re: Additional Juggler improvement
« on: December 25, 2007, 11:36 »
The new Juggler, if it replaces the old 'swap weapon' thing as opposed to just adding on to it, is a poor trait choice in my opinion. Hybrid melee/missile characters seem rare to the point of non-existence. If you're melee, you'll already have your chainsaw or LS in your primary slot. If you're missile, situations where it'll come in handy are going to be rather thin on the ground. Maybe it's just my play tactics, but it makes more sense to me to shoot the Arachnotron I'm standing next to with my modded Chaingun, z-switching to a plasma rifle or BFG if the situation warrants it, rather than ineffectually mashing it with the chainsaw.

I never skip it- free Power Cells and an opportunity to chainsaw eighteen Former Humans and four Cacodemons to death?! Sign me up!

Conker: You don't have to go through the Chained Court- or any bonus level, for that matter. I frequently skip Hell's Arena (and The Wall, ammo depending). Incidentally, it is possible to die on Chained Court- get shot a lot, have Berserk time out, and don't make it back to the Berserk Packs in the middle. Kinda embarassing u_u;

I bet it is.

You don't HAVE to go through it, no. But considering even a poor player can clear it with no losses whatsoever (I'm using myself as a great example here - just remove your armour before entering. Health and ammo are replenished by the abundance of berserk packs), the only reason you wouldn't do so, as you're saying you don't, is presumably the monotony. Surely we can all agree that it's a bad thing for any part of the game to become monotonous?

Besides, the way I play, I don't like throwing away any experience - even the small amount I'll get from the former foo's and four cacos might be enough so that I gain a crucial level that bit earlier - every little helps. And as you say, the power cells are nice too. And the speed mod.

I support the demon and lost soul idea (not sure if you were joking or not, but I think it's a good idea). And the removal of a couple of berserk packs. It's just too easy.

Requests For Features / Remove Chained Court
« on: December 24, 2007, 15:31 »
Does anyone think it might be good to remove the Chained Court? I always wince when I get to it. It's always the same - the berserk packs make it impossible to lose. It's so routine!

Even if you're a complete spastic, you can't die to those human guards with a total of 5 berserks available (plus the large health globe in the corner). The cacos, well, maybe the first time, but anyone who's gotten that far even a handful of time will be able to do the entire level in their sleep.

To pre-empt the reply of 'Ah, but it makes a player go 'Wow, this is neat!' the first time' - perhaps. But not the 2nd, 3rd, and definitely not the 200th time.

Requests For Features / Improved auto-targetting
« on: December 22, 2007, 16:46 »
When you hit fire, it generally targets the nearest monster, right?

Only sometimes, the LOS it draws will land your bullet into a wall, even if there's an alternate one you could pick where it'd hit the monster. It'd be nice if we could make it always pick a 'valid' LOS (or tell us one doesn't exist) to speed up games, rather than having to laboriously check each time we fire at a monster near a wall.

So close, but yet so far.

I could have escaped - a phase put me right next to the 'exit' corner, with the advanced BFG. But that 100% kill rate was beckoning...

That's my last attempt on this game until the new beta comes out. If I can't do it when I have the immense luck of finding an advanced chaingun on level 3, then I can't do it at all.

Requests For Features / Re: New Special Level?
« on: September 26, 2007, 06:58 »
Hey, I like it ! But only if that level would be an easter egg, hard to discover (for example, you have to use a phase device on down stairs leading to level 13). But I'll rather vote for a second bolter or a cool close-combat weapon instead of Adeptus armor...

Things of that obscurity would only be discovered by spoilers (it's not like the game has hundreds of thousands of players for trying random nonsensical things). Which makes the obscurity pointless in the first place.

Perhaps it's only available if the player has 100% kills to that point?

Off Topic / Re: Frozen Depth 1.02 released!
« on: August 27, 2007, 19:15 »
Two things in this game I wouldn't mind seeing in Doom:

A maze with a lot of thick walls with narrow corridors and nested rooms like Frozen Depths, and most of all, a pause that occurs every time the player takes enough damage to be near death.

*goes to bed*

The only problem with the second idea is that in hectic situations, upwards of 60% health can be lost in a single round. It's rarely not noticing my health level that kills me, anyway.

After an evening of playing, FD does seem to have some neat features, such as the shrines, instant-use scrolls, the whole warmth thing, but it's a bit too luck-based for my tastes, in terms of equipping cursed items, stat gains, etc. I'll be keeping an eye on it though.

Best run: Killed the second boss on my ninth go at the game, only to die to a potion of acid that did around 70+hp damage when I opened it. Meh.

Similar dumb question - how do I sacrifice? The manual says go to a shrine and press 'u', but that doesn't seem to work. The first time, a little demon came and fireballed my equipment (lovely). Now nothing happens. I've got a load of silver statues I want to offer up, so the Goddess might uncurse my weapon/ring.

There are actually two different types of shrines (surprise!!). The one that you described is a Spirit Shrine. When 'u'sed, it bestows a random effect on you- and they aren't always good. Those are one shot deals. The other one is a Goddess Shrine (specifically named so, but uses the same symbol). When you 'u'se it, it brings you to the sacrifice menu. These can be used again and again.

Now, I have yet to sacrifice enough that she likes me enough to respond to my prayers, but I gather you sacrifice first, then attempt to pray (press the '_' symbol). Good luck!

Thanks a lot! One less thing to figure out.

I entered that level with full blue armour and at least 8 large medkits. Starts off fine. Then I walk into a room into the sight of two V's, who immediately take me down to something like 40% health. I phase out of there, only to find another V. Managed to take him out, and one more who popped up, but a third got me with some insane damage amount. And there was still one left elsewhere on the level. Unbelievable.

I've seen it said elsewhere that Viles are scary because of their resurrection ability. True enough, in old Doom. But here, a 100% hit-chance attack with that high damage, coupled with speed unmatched by anything but Lost Souls? Hell, I welcome the times they spend their turns resurrecting other monsters. Less turns spent hellfiring me.

Requests For Features / Updated manual.txt
« on: August 22, 2007, 20:47 »
Pretty low down on the totem pole, obviously, but it'd be nice. There are a lot of unexplained things. Modding isn't touched upon at all, in there. I suspect the mod-limit would be useful information for new players (so they'd know to get Whizkid ;)).

A brief summary of items and monsters would also be good. It's rather needed for some items - the thermonuclear bomb springs to mind, to avoid poor newbie suicides. And to solve a few other issues with it (I admit, what drove me to make this post was having the option to nuke the level I'm on - while invincible, obviously - but not knowing if that'd obliterate all the items or leave them, or give me exp from the monsters, or anything like that. The manual didn't contain any of that information).

Other matters that could benefit from a little elucidation would be the fact that accuracy is affected by range, and by moving from side to side, and perhaps a few vague teaser descriptions of some special levels/weapons for flavour?

Most, if not all the above information can be found on the site, but as an ease of use thing, it'd be wonderful to have the manual as a handy compendium of DoomRL lore as opposed to having to scour the wiki and various forum posts to find the answer needed. My only concern is that perhaps the proposed information would be too spoilerish? I'm a poor judge of that myself - I read spoilers on every RL I play (the 'fun' of cockatrice, ghul, and drolem insta-deaths in Nethack, ADOM and Angband respectively made sure of that), so I've somewhat lost my appreciation for mystery :P

4. Boots have no effect.
Uh what? I'm 99% positive tha boots do work O.o

As for others you can mark off #1 as fixed in beta, and I think that #7 was stated as intended somewhere

As I said, that was based off a few forum posts - I wander through lava/acid rarely enough that I never really notice myself. Thanks for the corrections. Edited the OP. I'll leave 7 in the 'Unsure' list for now though, because it seems a bit debatable.

[
2. Teleporters can cause unexplained mysterious deaths. Teleporters bad.
The only "mysterious death" I know of is when a teleporter ports you back on itself, causing an infinite loop. This is "solved" by making the marine die instead of teleporting for eternity :p

Mysterious enough for me. If a new player walks into one and dies that way, they won't really know what happened. I'd say it still needs solving, personally.

Also added the backpack bugs kindly linked to by tisiphone.

Bug Reports / Revised Known Bugs
« on: August 22, 2007, 09:45 »
I realise some of these may be fixed in the beta (wouldn't know, don't have the cash to buy it), but I thought a thread with the known bugs of 0987 might be useful for newbies who looked at the stickied topic and didn't see their bug there. Additions or corrections welcome, I'm far from an expert on this game.

The following bugs are, to the best of my knowledge, still unfixed in .0987  (I'm not talking about the beta here).

1. Damage Bonuses from SoaB and SoaG traits do not work.   * Fixed in the current Beta

2. Teleporters can kill the player by trying to teleport him to the location of the teleporter.

3. Player doesn't gain experience from monsters bleeding to death.

4. Boots have no effect.

5. Rooms occasionally generated without exits

6. Possible corruption of player.dat

7. Backpack issues - Unloading uses the old ammo handling code, and picking up stacks creating unusual amounts (apparently fixed in beta).

8. Two players generated (resulting in monsters 'sniping' you) on Arena levels * Apparently fixed in the beta.

9. Saving doesn't preserve invincibility.

Unsure if these are bugs

10. Player doesn't gain experience from pulling a lever, causing barrels to explode which kill monsters.  * Apparently intended?

11. Monsters can be generated in closed off corridors behind barrels, making them impossible to kill in an AoB game (Renders 100% kill rates in AoB even more unlikely :P)

12. Trying to use the BFG with less than 40 plasma cells in the thing takes 'time'. Considering that trying to shoot any other weapon while empty doesn't take time, this would be a nice consistency fix.

Some of these are based on comments on the forums - like the boots one - and so could be incorrect. If so, please let me know.

This will obviously (hopefully) become obsolete when the new version comes out, but until then, hope this helps someone.
