I was about to 'fourthed' this, when I realised health doesn't regenerate in Doom, so it wouldn't be the awesome 'R'est key I'm envisioning from, say, Angband. But what the hell, fourthed, it'd be nifty.

You could make it so that it'll spawn tougher enemies from later on. Sure would be nice to be on level 2 and go "Mm, this is the fifth time for the same spawn... Oh, a Hell Knight. Drat".

Actually, that'd be rather easy. Assuming a difficulty of H or above, one would most likely have a chaingun by then, thanks to Human Captains, and the enemies don't seem to move for a good three rounds after they're spawned. Hell, even an Arachnotron from one of those levers wouldn't be that scary with those initial free turns.

Why should the first level be treated that much different from any other level?

Because on the other levels, whether the monsters use up resources or not is down to your skill/tactics. If you choose to pop away at a human with a pistol when you could sneak up and one shot him with your shotgun, it's really your fault if he uses up a large medkit or whatever that could have been yours. Whereas on the first level, to my mind, it's random. Not much you can do to one shot them.

I agree that perhaps all 4 is a bit much. 2 guaranteed would be nice.

I can't be the only person who quits and restarts if he gets less than two of the med-kits on the first level (I play on H difficulty, and they make a big difference in Hell's Arena). I think it'd save a lot of startscumming if people just started with the medkits on the Phobos level in their inventory, as opposed to the lottery it is now of whether you get them. There's definitely no skill to it.

Apologies if this has been suggested before, I had a brief look at the last couple of pages, and it wasn't in the 'FAQ' thread.

I think Rabiat was just saying that if you savescum, you'll restore your game and not attempt a special level if it proves too hard - therefore there won't be as many special levels showing up in the mortem of a character who has save-scummed.

As far as making the game 'actually winnable' goes, I suspect those concerns will be helped to at least some degree when the rest of the outstanding bugs get fixed. For example, if you factor in the extra damage from things like SoB, SoG, the extra exp you'd gain from monsters that die of bloodloss, that might tip the scales just enough.

Hey, I'm running version 0.987 for Windows on XP.

I read the sticky where the creator mentioned the (rare) possibility of a teleporter sending you to its own location, resulting in an infinite loop, but it said this would be fixed in the next version (and the topic was last edited well before the latest version came out, so I presume it's fixed.

In that case, what exactly happened here?


 Nic, level 4 Former Human Corporal, killed by something...
 on level 7 of the Phobos base.
 He survived 27437 turns and scored 20812 points.
 He wasn't afraid to be hurt plenty.

 He killed 107 out of 119 hellspawn. (90%)

 He stormed the Chained Court.
 He fought on Hell's Arena.
 He became a champion of Hell's Arena!
