I was sitting down, playing DoomRL and was thinking about a couple of things which would be nice features, just a couple of cosmetic changes really. (Hence the title of the thread!)

- Armour glows on enemies. When you put a special armour onto Doomguy, it "glows" his model. Why then, does the armour not make the enemy glow, signifying that he/she/it is wearing a special armour? I thought this would be kinda neat, considering how annoying we all know it is to find out that the baron is wearing an energy shield or ballistic vest...

- Door sounds in Hell. The sprites for doors in Hell are clearly very old style typical hellish doors. However the sound that they emit is still quite clearly something which sounds like an auto-door from *INSERT GENERIC SCI FI HERE*. Can a sound be made that's more like say a, creaking door opening quickly, or something along those lines. It just makes no sense that these (clearly) old style doors are making noises which belong in Aliens...

I know these are small things really, but eh, just my 2 cents on the matters! =P

--------------------------------------------------------------

This was pretty good, not my first win - but my first on this computer - so it still feels cool.

I was going to go for explorer - which is why I entered City of Skulls and UC with no intention of completing them. Then my dumb ass decided decided to skip The Mortuary - even though I had access to a homing phase...GOD DAMN IT. (Which is why my kill % is so low)

My main problem this run was actually deciding where to put mods. I got a bunch of A and B mods - but with no WK, not much of a place to put them...so I dropped most of them... (I would like to point out that I had to use the nuke plasma rifle to get to JC - which I'll get to in a second. . .) However one thing which WAS hilarious - Hell's Armoury finally gave me something that wasn't a schematic - which was a nano pack. The very next level - an onyx pack dropped. Lava boots came ASAP! Then when I realised I could - Powered Red Armour - which rocked ass by the way!

Most of the run was uneventful - although I have to comment on Cateye. I pretty much used it predominately as an OP way to scout - then plan. Many a time was I just corner shooting with a shotgun, or bursting off with the nuke plasma rifle...It was really good, and pretty prevented me from taking damage a lot of the time. However since I'm a dumbass, I still took damage frequently...

JC was really funny at best. I didn't actually know that shooting him from a distance would do this so I was on the backfoot from the start. I put up a pretty good fight, getting JC down to severely wounded, but once my powered red armour disappeared into the abyss - it was all over. (I MEAN SERIOUSLY, LOOK AT THOSE BARONS - YES THEY WERE BARONS - mostly....)

Overall though, the game calls it a win - so suck it. I'm happy with the run - so, you should be to! :P

--------------------------------------------------------------

After a reasonably successful run with Shottyhead (sparked by debate about the Scout class) this happened. I'll get back to it - but let me just comment on the run more generically first.

At first, I was really struggling to get to Anomaly without dying horribly. Eventually with the help of getting a Double Shotgun on level 2 and a Combat Shotgun on level 6 (pre-Wall) I was good to go. I managed to acquire Shottyhead inside the Armoury, which made the Shambler a really fun fight, just dodging around with my Combat Shotgun, switching to the Double when he got too close for comfort...

In the main levels, I really had to rely on the range of the Combat Shotgun, although even formers who picked up armour of any kind posed a threat. After Spider's Lair, I used my N. Plasma Rifle a lot as a backup - and to conserve shells which by this point - I was running out of.

My strategy for the big C? Simple really, 2 BFG's and about 100 spare cells. :P

It all started going downhill in The Vaults really. Running low on resources I thought I'd crack them and see what goodies I could find. I got a shell box which lasted me, but nothing special on the Exotic/Unique front.

Assembling the Elephant Gun was really an act of fun - although it helped conserve ammo for when I needed a punch, and didn't want to use two shells.

Now, back to the Mortuary. I unloaded one BFG round left and right, and then proceeded to carve right, with the BFG of course. I killed all the Arch-Viles - and wanted out. So, instead of using my homing phase, or just walking to the stairs like I was capable of, my brain said to use the phase device. This put me in the middle of about...30 enemies. I could have homing phased out, but looking at my resources, and my will to stop playing (I had to do other things) I just nuked the place. I don't really know why I'm posting a whole mortem - but I thought it was funny.

I'm going to keep trying with the Shottyhead build - it works well - but I need to stockpile more shells and a shell box even - to provide in the days where there are no sergeants.

Requests For Features / Equalise shotgun ammo finds
« on: March 14, 2012, 22:43 »
I know this is a small request - and I'm sure there's a reason for it being the way it is...but...

Can the shotguns shells you find on the ground be made the same as the amount you find on sergeants. For example, if you kill a former human (a "basic" 10mm ammo enemy) you find 24 bullets. If you find 10mm ammo laying on the ground - 24 bullets. But with sergeants, you find 30 shells on his body - but only 8 on the ground! Can this be equalised.

I'm not saying it should be one way or the other - however the inconsistency just bugs me. Also it's really annoying only finding 8 shells on the ground - 8 doesn't really do spit when you really need it! (i.e. when sergeants pretty much cease spawning in favour of revs, mancubi, viles etc.)

0.9.9.5 / [M|99%|YAVP] - First win ever - and it was on stream!

Well, here is, the win using MBD which you have all been waiting for. OK, probably not...but I've been waiting long enough! Commentary can be found below.

54 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 51 of those were killed.
1 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 1 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

 1 souls destroyed the Mastermind...
1 killed the bitch and survived.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Dlevel 2: Decided to not kill 100% on this level - talk about biting me in the ass! I got 99.99% kills in the end! That god damn imp!

Hells Arena: Pretty easy, however a couple of stupid mistakes led to the waste of a medpack, however it panned out for a very clear victory.

(Un)Chained Court: Again, pretty stock, I just zerked, went to the right, one shotted all the formers, one clipped (six shots) the cacos, then dual zerked, swept to the left, took out the Arena Master, took out the formers...level clear! I used the A mods on my pistols, hoping for tech mods to pop up. They did, but much later than I had hoped.

The Wall: One of my better Wall runs considering all, however stupid mistakes led to the destruction of some armour which I really didn't want destroyed, and the waste of a large med pack. The backpack imo was crucial in holding enough ammo to last through Hell. By Hell 7 - I had only a stack left! (Thank goodness for the Ammo Chain I held in reserve)

Anomaly: Although the lost souls caused trouble since I was a pistoleer, I got reasonably lucky with the cacos and how they blew up the souls for me. Thanks guys! The Brothers caused me some trouble in the form of coming in low (I went low) so I couldn't just knock them back with the missile launcher. Whipping out the pistolas however fixed this little issue and I came out with mere scratches.

Armoury: Three Rocket Launchers and a Shotgun...you wouldn't bloody believe it. Then just to top it off, two agililty, one bulk, one tech mod. Not two, but I lived. Schematic was one I already had...*sigh*. (At this point I assembled the all holy Tactical Armour, which led me all the way through to Hell 7.)

Halls of Carnage: After much debate, I took the homing phase device from the previous level - then immediately used it in this level. Clearing out the cacos, barons, demons and lost souls was just fun to me, as I knew there was a supercharge waiting for me. Quite amusing indeed.

Spider's Lair: Going into this with a PAIR of speedloaders was really fun. I made some silly errors, and encountered two at a time - twice...which hurt...but nothing that couldn't be fixed by a health globe/medpack.

Babel: Thanks to a great tip from a viewer (sorry, I can't remember your name) I picked up a envirosuit on the previous level and used it to pretty much tank the bastard. Of course I dodged, but having TH 2 and MBD by this point made the fight almost redundant.

Vaults: I went into this with two freshly picked up invlun globes. Damn these Vaults were fun as. The loot wasn't all that great - just a Jackhammer. As Game Hunter pointed out - the Gothic Boots I found would have been useful in many occasions - but I passed them up in favour of a free inventory slot. Yes, I do kinda regret not listening to you...but only kinda...

Hell in general: Having backup in the form of a stream audience composing of those who can identify enemies (whereas I couldn't before today) was great. Knowing when to switch out my pistols for a different gun (for say a revenant) was great to have. I really thank my audience for this win paritally, simply because of that ability to accurately identify bad guys - through them! Thanks guys! (Also - having two consecutive arach caves was damn funny - but no revenants so it's cool right?)

Mastermind: Having pondered and planned for maybe 10 minutes, I finally went in with a BFG, P modded Phaseshift Armour, and two pistols. After unloading the three BFG shots (two radar shot may I add) I switched to the pistols and asked Spidey to dance with me....a BULLET DANCE. As you can see in the mortem, it took maybe four bursts - and she went down like a bitch! LIKE A BITCH I SAY.

Overall, this was a really fun run, as the stream viewers will attest to, I kinda just sat in awe of the victory mortem for about 10 minutes before finally moving on. Having it on stream was also kinda special, which felt nice. Also just the fact that it was my first win - and it was with a goal I set before I even knew I had remote possibilities of winning - felt awesome.

As a little backstory - I've run a stream for about a month and a half now. I used to have quite a bit of popularity back when I was streaming mainstream games (SM64, OoT etc) however that has run it's course and I am now quite enjoyably streaming whatever the hell I want...It's great.

Tonight during a laugh fest of MW2 - my little group started talking about DoomRL - and claimed that you didn't get a rocket launcher from Hell's Arena. I naturally like the smartass prick I am jumped up and claimed instantly that you did, and that I would prove it by placing DoomRL on the stream and showing indecisively that there was a rocket launcher.

After doing just that, I thought I'd finish out the run, I got through the Anomaly, through Armoury, skipped City of Skulls, found a GCB, slapped the Cyberdemon in the face then got a cheesy death on Hell 1 from a Commando while I was switching firing modes for the GCB...he came out of nowhere I swear!

Now here's my plan - I'm thinking of doing something along the lines of "play till I win" with DoomRL, next Friday (24/02/12) starting around 11:00am GMT. (Grenwich Mean Time) I really enjoy DoomRL and to stream it is awesome, however I'm going to need some bums on seats so to speak. I know this may sound like a great way to increase my popularity through you guys, but think about it...if I stop streaming DoomRL (which I will after I run this little stunt) you probably won't be interested. Status Quo maintained - successful! (Also yes, I will be plugging the fact this (DoomRL) is free and that you can very easily download it from this great website (The one you are on now), then posting links etc etc)

If anyone thinks this is a great/crap idea, please say so. Also your support of the event in just loading the stream page and idling there is helpful. To get on the "front page" of twitch tv's game index - you only need about 10-20 people - and that's not a lot once random people show up, which is awesome.

A link to my stream can be found here - http://www.twitch.tv/softman25 - And with some nifty navigation, you may even find the DoomRL video I just did...(Skip to about 1 hour 30 minutes for the start of the DoomRL section)

Thank you all for your support or even if you just read the thread - it means a lot to me to realise that you care - whether you feed constructive criticism or positive praise or whatever!

Bug Reports / [0.9.9.5 | Win XP] Hell's Armoury - No science lab!
« on: February 16, 2012, 22:55 »
So I was playing a game of DoomRL, and Hell's Armoury FINALLY decided to give me the GCB, so naturally I was game to take on the Shambler and get all of his science lab goodies.

Much to my dismay though when the science lab did not open...I now draw your attention to the attachment of this post...

Now then, I'm not sure whether this is a bug or something on purpose - but the amount of times I've played Hell's Armoury - not once has the science lab just not opened. Forgive me if this actually isn't a bug - but it's just something peculiar which I thought I'd report!

Thanks in advance for your consideration if I have just goofed...

0.9.9.5 / [M|98%|Hell 4|YASD] - RNG thou art a fickle bastard
« on: February 14, 2012, 23:09 »
This run was going swimmingly.

The Necroarmor was doing it's thing, and I seemed to be finding just enough health globes and armour shards to keep me and it going like a house on fire...it was great.

The fact that I didn't have dual speedloader pistols was more of a luck issue than anything else - no tech mods! However for the first damn time in .995, I found something OTHER than a schematic in Hell's Armoury! Shame it was a Firestorm...but that BFG worked wonders in a couple of tough spots!

My plan overall was to just nuke the Mastermind...I knew that I really couldn't actually beat it based on my resources - however the situation I got into on this level was really daunting.

As you can see in the mortem, I pretty much spawned right next to these two friendly chaps. I only saw one at first and was taking him out quite nicely, but then the second one came, and the medpacks ran out...For the record, I know now that I should have just switched to the damn Plasma Rifle...but hindsight is a bitch...

Overall, I just wanted to share this to show that RNG is an asshole. Like seriously...a real bitch. He/She can't give me tech mods, but he can give me bleeding Acid Spitters, Super Shotguns and Firestorm packs...but only one tech mod in the entire game?

Requests For Features / Mortem Series' (FORUM SUGGESTION)
« on: February 12, 2012, 01:25 »
(As I always put with suggestions on forums, my apologies if this has already been suggested. I always make a quick perusal of the forums, but nothing too thorough. If it has been suggested before, I have no qualms if the topic is just deleted or something...thanks for your consideration)

I was thinking about the Post-Mortem section of the forums, and came up with an idea.

My current "goal" in DoomRL is to complete the game utilising MBD. I posted one of my first half successful runs here. However if/when I actually win, I'd like to post another mortem, and have another little ramble on what I did, how lucky I got etc etc.

However instead of making another topic (which is what I believe (operative word being "believe) is the current norm) I'd much rather not clutter up the forums and put it in the same spot. So then, here's my idea.

Have another sub-forum (or not depending on how much this would be received) where people can place "Goal mortems". For example, my current goal of completing the game using MBD could be notated "Goal - complete on M using MBD" and when I complete it I could put "Complete" at the end or something along those lines. (To let people know that this goal isn't a WIP, and they can see the journey from beginning to end.) (Also, if someone decides to give up, they could put "Failed" or "Suspended" or something...)

I personally just think this would be awesome. The people who are actually good at the game could maybe have N! goals, or Diamond badge goals or something. But instead of just posting the end of the journey, people can see the journey, comment and help out maybe.

I don't know what people think of this, and maybe I'm taking the wrong light on the Post-Mortem forum. I just feel (personally) that it isn't a bragging ground, but more of a "have a look at what I'm doing right now in DoomRL", since the game is so robust like that.

Thanks for reading, hope you like my suggestion...although I won't take it personally if you don't! :P

0.9.9.5 / [M|AoMr|86%|Hell 4|YASD] - Why I hate the Mortuary
« on: February 10, 2012, 02:08 »
I see a bunch of hate for Bullet Dance...more so among my friends, however I have proved here that it does work, at least to a point.

I might have actually won my first game of DoomRL (on AoMr at that!) if it wasn't for being stupid enough to enter the Mortuary.

Funny story though, I actually said directly to my friends, "Am I crazy?" and when the answer came back as "Yes", I delved in.

It was really only a lack of attention/abundance of stupidity which led to my death. Why ever the hell I didn't just use a medpack or two...or fell back to the Supercharge globes is beyond me. However, those viles just kept giving me barons, and that, even with my Lava Armour, led to my death.

When it comes down to it, I was pretty lucky. Except for the fact that every mod pack I seemed to find after the Armoury was a bulk pack, my modding was very successful in the beginning. I was at first experimenting with High Power Pistols, but once I realised that Bullet Dance actually fired extra shots, I easily then made an extra Speedloader.

I did actually find a combat pistol in the Armoury, and if I found a second I might have used them, but I didn't, so I stuck with the Speedloaders.

Near the end (although I had an inkling I wouldn't make it) I was trying to get Whizkid to put P mods on my speedloaders, but alas, the Mortuary got me first!

All in all, a decent run, I'm more than happy with it, I'm still kicking myself for being stupid enough to actually go into the Mortuary in the first place though...

Discussion / DoomRL Blogging - my attempt at a review! (Finished)
« on: February 10, 2012, 01:55 »
This is possibly just shameless self-advertising, but I thought that before actually posting a DoomRL review on my blog...I should really come to the experts. I hold and maintain a blog of reviews and rants, and after getting 0.9.9.5 up (and enjoying it) I decided to write a little review on the game. It has to be one of my "coffee break" favourites, so it's certainly a favourable review. I'm also hoping that at least one person who reads the review actually downloads the thing, since it would be pretty cool if I could actually help the PR of DoomRL! But anyway, I'm humbly right now, asking for your help! I want you to review my review!

For starters, here is what I have now - http://pastebin.com/DxJRWfRK

OK, now before everyone jumps up and says "do this" here's my parameters...

- Don't tell me to change my opinion. If I have a fact wrong and I complain about it however...different story... :D
- I'm asking for advice and clarification. I've played DoomRL since the latter days of 0.9.9.3, so although I wouldn't cry that I'm a veteran, but I've been around the block. However my knowledge on the game is minimal to none...hence my coming here!
- Anything else is fair game. However please don't write the paragraph for me. For example, if you think with all your heart that putting a section in on assemblies (as opposed to glossing over them like I did) is the best thing since sliced bread...just say it. I'll write it, don't you worry! ;)

Also, if anyone is really game to actually help (although I'm not banking any hopes here and won't hold it against anyone if they don't help...:D) I'd appreciate some screenshots of the game. I'll be picking maybe...5 in the end, and I'm looking for at least semi-high resolution. i.e. At it's "original" size everything can be seen. (Also - if you wish to put your own caption on it, I'll be happy to include it as the caption for the picture)

If anyone does actually help, thank you very much. If not, thanks anyway for just reading!

Cheers, Pricklyman
