Title: Proposed Feature - General Progress Tracking [DONE]
Post by: Kornel Kisielewicz on October 23, 2005, 00:34
This one is a little unroguelikeish. I'm playing with the idea to add a tracking system, that tracks all your games in general. As a player you would have a general "rank" common to all your DoomRL games. Let's say you first have the rank of "Former Human". If you manage to get a character to Level 10 you get the "Former Human Seregant" rank. If you manage to beat DoomRL you get the "Former Human Capitan" rank, or "Former Human Commander" if you beat it on at least "Hey, Not To Rough" level. Further ranks would need several things to be accomplished, like:

* finishing the game with 100% kills
* killing a total of 1000 Hell Barons
* beating the game on "Hurt Me Plenty"
* beating the game on "Ultra-Violence"
* finishing (or reaching a certain level) in a challenge game (see other post)

The final rank "Spider Mastermind" could be achieved by beating the game on the "Nightmare" level (which itself would be unlocked if you gain at least "Former Human Commander" rank.

What would ranks give (except for the obvious satisfaction :-P)? Well there are quite a few ideas:

* rank would be written in each mortem file (prestige!)
* rank could be shown in a future (maybe) ladder system
* rank would give an incentive to play DoomRL more

Ok, ok, these don't seem to useful... so how about:

* rank would unlock "Nightmare"
* rank would unlock "Challenge Games'
* rank would unlock additional Special Levels
* rank could unlock an additional weapon to be available (eg. Lightning Gun)

Moreover, a lot more statistical data about the players achievements would be stored by the game, so you could track your progress, with information about:

* global number of kills per monster
* maximum level on each skill level, or how many times you've beat it
* shortest completion time per skill level
* highest kill rate per skill level
* etc...

Well, what do you think?

\* killing a total of 1000 Hell Barons\

That's cruel :).

\* finishing the game with 100% kills\

What if someone hides in a corner, and spoils my Holy Quest for 100%? Maybe option for checking killrate for current level?

You can limit special levels by rank - unless you have it high enough, you won't get them...

Also I'm now thinking about mini-campaigns (2-4 levels large) for high-ranked players :). More like bonuses, that separate games... Maybe to large for a feature, but that'd be nice anyway - maybe something with Easter Egg feeling - special campaign "Anubis Lair", where you get to meet The Evil Creator, who gives a long-long speech and then lets you wander around mazes of his house, battling his minions and searching for DRL sources. Yeah, yeah, I've got over the top, I know :). That'd be more for Carceri ;).

Many people already managed to do that, so it isn't as hard as it sounds.

Yup. There might be additional special levels only available for those with the appropriate rank. They will be harder tough, and ususaly just for show and not for the reward ;-).

About the campaigns... who knows. But that's rather a post-1.0.0 feature ;-D.

I think progress tracking is a great idea, but we'll need the ability to wipe our high score table.

Does dead, but not killed by player, monsters count? It's quite common for some puny former human to die on acid (I could never kill'em all in the Chain Court, sigh!) or get blasted by baron.

Reminds me of some MMORPG. Just tedious, not fun or hard.

A ladder? Like the Angband's one? Great!

Scary.

Intriguing (I shall read that other post).

I would also like to see a list of how much players had each kind of monsters killed, how much died to acid and exploding barrels and distribution of deathes among the levels.

Those could be in.

Killing 1000 barons:
Not nice. In my 30 games I've only killed a baron in 3 or 4 of them...

100% kills:
I've done that a couple of times. I love the satisfaction of after ALL YOUR HARD WORK you get a "this ass-kicking marine killed 'em all!" message. :-)

Beating the game on difficulty 3 or 4:
Don't make me try. *sob*

What I would like to see is that these give you some amount of rank points or something when you do them the first time, adding to your rank point total, and for example,  when you reach 10 points you get a former human rank, 50-former human sergeant, 300-former human captain etc. This way, you still need to do a lot of things to get higher ranks , but have a bit more freedom in how you do it. You could even have a checklist of thesethings to show your porgress and things you could still try to do:

* getting to level ten: 3
* finishing the game with 100% kills: 20 points
* killing a total of 1000 Hell Barons: 60
* beating the game on "Hurt Me Plenty": 15
* beating the game on "Ultra-Violence": 25
* finishing as an Angel of rubber duckies: 75
* killing you first arachnodemon: 1
* seeing each new special level: 1

etc. The point being, also add some easier ones, so that the first rank can be gained with relative ease, and the last by doing lots of rediculously hard things.

Thanks for the welcome, I'm glad you like the idea. The one downside is that creating these tasks and balancing them somewhat might be quite difficult, but this way rank would be a better sign of a players skill. It would be a bit unfair if a player who had beaten nightmare would still be just a former human commander, because he has killed only 932 hell barons.

I'm guilty.  But hell is really pissed off at me for winning one too many times.  My worse luck so far is to walk into a room full of human sergants, and everyone fired all at once.  Can you say...shredded?

Nope. The All-consuming Holy Quest for 100% completion for GTA: Vice City. It's kinda boring... All them 100 hidden stuff.

Would it be of any interess to know how many time you shot with each weapon ? Or How many enemy you killed with each weapon ?

You could have a ratio killed/ammo. (or ammo/killed, depending on the weapon)
Title: Proposed Feature - General Progress Tracking
Post by: JimmyJ on February 05, 2006, 20:22
O_O ooh....or perhaps how many enemys you killed with each gun, and a comparison of WHICH gun did better :)

An ammo-efficiency ratio makes NO SENSE in DoomRL, Reason being that the only control over aiming you get is when you:

A. Press the F key twice

B. Press the F key, Target something (say, a barrel) and press F again.

Whether you hit or not is depended on a biased random roll (I.E To hit modifiers).

However a "Shots fired" table would make sense.

How would it track spash damage kills if it keeps record of enemies killed by weapon, though?

Moreover, you can kill a lot of foes with a single blast of BFG and you need a few hits to kill anything with a pistol.

Its simple really, Imagine this:

There is a man with a rocket launcher sitting at the top of a hill, You can see him and clearly identify him.

He says: "I am now going to fire a rocket at your friend"

He fires a rocket at you friend, But misses and hits the floor.

The explosion kills your friend anyway.

Splash-Damage for dummies.
