0.9.9.2 / [M|99%|18|YASD] Good to be back!
« on: April 03, 2011, 15:07 »
Right ... I've been away for several months (My appartment burned down, with my computer in it), and things have gone amazingly well in getting back on my feet. Most importantly, this meant that I missed the update, and I'm just now getting around to kill demons as before.
I kicked off the new update by attempting an MGK build, and was shocked at how amazing the assemblies are for making the game more interesting.
I'd spoiled myself on the assemblies, breezed through the arena ... the chained court caught me completely by surprise ... I almost did not survive the arena master. I was able to find the Beretta afterward, and from there things were pretty much a cakewalk. Well ... I was foolish in thinking that those barrels were not behind me, and thus safe for a door check ... the end result was something out of a Micheal Bay film.
Are the mods dropping more frequently?

Discussion / AnyDice ... dice probability scripting for fun and profit
« on: December 03, 2010, 17:37 »
This is an amazing page, http://anydice.com/
It's a web based interpreter made for scripting dice probabilities, the output is processed by plotting the chance that each result will occur, and then graphing the results.
I used it to make a simple damage calculator for pistols per shot, factoring in damage, power mods and accuracy.
Paste this into the script field at the top, or come up with something of your own.
I'm finding it a fun toy to play with, and perhaps a valuable tool when determining my builds. I'm sure people can make scripts to work with the stats for other weapons.
The Minor page is very useful in this regard.
I've separated out the damage roll as a separate function, simply so make it easier to do the same calculations for other pistol type weapons.
EDIT: I've done a few tweaks, added number crunching for Chaingun and Plasma (virtually identical weapons as far as how they work) ... note that these calculations are made 'per trigger pull' ... weapon speed is not taken into account here.

Century Lounge / [M|Ao100|44|84%|YASD] Barrels and viles make me unhappy.
« on: November 28, 2010, 18:14 »
I'm on level 43, I'm in a maze that is Khe, he, he ... barrels everywhere. I've got Intx2 ... so I know they are out there, I've run into a already, so I decide to use my homing phase rather than wading through barrels.
On the next level I end up in another maze, just with less barrels. I'm creeping through, keeping an eye on the red dots. I'm confident that they don't have line of sight to me as I turn a corner. Boy was I wrong ... turns out I stepped right next to a barrel, and mister Vile managed, somehow to see me ... and lit me up, next to a barrel. Look at the mortem, that was utter bullshit.
Edit: I just noticed that at 139200, that run placed at the top of my Hall of Fame.

0.9.9.1 / [H|91%|25|YAVP] Desperado not afraid to be hurt, first attempt.
« on: November 06, 2010, 20:42 »
Okay ... I'd been cutting my teeth on Ao100 runs on M ... and it was getting to be brutally difficult, vile packs almost every level, not to mention the 'hidden fun stuff' ... which wasn't nearly as bad as the viles ...
I figured, if Ao100 is this insane on M, why not try to try a standard H game?
I figured I would die a lot as I learned to transition from M to H. I didn't. Not only that, I did it with my favorite build ... a build that I was still testing, and had no idea whether or not it would be effective at higher difficulties, or if I were just cheesing it on easy games.
Well, I present to you all, humbly, my first attempt at a standard run on Hurt Me Plenty.
Yeah, yeah ... I know ... I wasn't sure what I was thinking with the combat translocator, especially when I had phase devices to spare.
I know I'm not pulling insane stuff like going for Plat and Diamond badges, it just felt really, really good to complete H on my first try. And have the screenshot to prove it.
Of note, I found two assault shotguns early on, which did the vast majority of my heavy lifting through the run ... I dropped one pretty late in, and the other on level 24, knowing that it wouldn't be much use in a fight with the Cyberdemon ... not that the combat translocator was helpful ...

I want my third silver badge so I can rank up and try Ao100 ... cool, I try AoLT ... cool. Ammochain build, get lucky and find a ton of mods I have to lug around until wizkid. Early plasma rifle, sweet! Two agility and a power mod. I get my BFG, plop two bulk mods on it. I'm set to go, one level until Ammochain ... I'm at 86% experience even, bit of a rough scrap with a baron left me without armor ... I go down a set of stairs and ...

Time to give my new BFG a workout ... and pray.
I was wrong ... I was 86% towards Triggerhappy. I survived the fight ... with barely any cells left. I managed to kill an arachnotron hiding in the same level with my plasma rifle before he could get a shot off ...
Next level was hell's gate ... with enough cells for one BFG shot ... after the fight in the first room, I had 15 cells for my souped up plasma rifle. I decided to run past the bruisers. I made it past them, but the red armor I found along the way got destroyed, and the run cost me two med-packs.
I got into hell with trembling fingers, little cells left, and praying I could earn enough XP to get Ammochain. It gets better from there.
I had just gotten ammochain, yet was hurting for cells for my BFG ... and I ran into this.

Cheerful, with a regenerating supply of cells (Juggler is so nice, instantly swap to any weapon in my inventory if I have a problem). I was still having a hard time finding decent armor, finally stumbling into a set of blue armor after an eternity in green.
All the while, the RNG was inisitent on making my life miserable.

Not really gripes so much as convenience factors.
It would be nice if the drop menu 'd' had something in the header inventory menu 'i' to equip or used had something to distinguish itself, so that you don't accidentally use the Translocator that you really meant to drop.
--------------------- Inventory -----------------------
----------------------- Drop --------------------------
It is VERY convenient to view the trait menu, 'T' ... yet you can't get out of the menu if a 'grayed' trait is selected'
And finally, Is it possible to implement toggling music ')', screenshotting 'F10' and bbcode screenshotting 'F9' in any view other than the actual game view? It would be nice to screen shot or toggle music while first starting the game, or in the inventory menu, traits menu, or something else to that effect. I realize that the engine/codebase may not be easily extensible in that manner, or simply more effort than it is worth to change just for a simple convenience factor, but I figured I'd throw it out there.
Thanks for the invite to provide input on the next version.

"I do not kill with my gun. He who kills with
his gun has forgotten the face of his father.
I kill with my heart."
For you, a pistol is not a tool, a simple weapon,
it is an extension of your body. Your pistols deal an
additional point of damage for each pistol shot landed
to a maximum of twelve. Missing, reloading, taking damage
or firing any weapon other than a pistol will reset the bonus.
Requires : Son of a gun (3), Juggler (1), Eagle Eye (1)
Blocks : Hellrunner, Brute, Son of a Bitch
Note: I've modified this idea significantly, I'm including the old concept for completeness.
Old Gunslinger:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
I wanted an alternative pistol master trait ... leaning towards power pistol builds as it seems to be a popular alternative to MGK builds. I had also wanted to present a master trait that may provide an incentive to do a Non-dualgunner pistol build, although such would be tricky, I think that this might provide a minor incentive to attempt that, but I'm not really experienced enough to know the full incentives this would have on possible builds that would result from this.
Naturally, this might need to be balanced ... I especially had difficulty picking which traits to block. I wanted to follow the convention of a master trait requiring six traits, either two advanced traits + prerequisites, or some other combination (see the requirements for Blademaster).
I really hated the idea of blocking a second level trait, so I settled on blocking SoB, to block Cateye, upping the Master trait's damage bonus to compensate.
I would greatly enjoy having a master trait like this, providing versatility to the pistol game, and perhaps leaning towards a broader game allowing more weapon focus. (MGS/Shottyman, MGS/Intuition, MGS/Whizkid). Another reason I like this is that it incorporates the well loved juggler in an understandable manner, especially for single pistol builds.
I feel that blocking SoB is a bit more balanced and keeps to the 'block only basic traits' rule, SoB + Gunslinger bonus might be a tad overpowered. Why a max bonus of 12? If you're holding two unmodded pistols, you can unload one, swap, and unload the other without having to reload. Understandably, this would make bulk mods and the Beretta immensely powerful, as it would allow additional rounds fired with the maximum damage bonus ... yet dual-gunner would be hampered by this, as if the first round kills, the second will miss, resetting the bonus. It would make this master trait usable with Dualgunner, but favor a pistol build without it.
I really like this, as it gives a completely different flavor of pistol game from the 'john woo' style of pistol shooting that most pistol builds depend on, leaning more to the trick shot style of marksman that can depend on alternative weapons in a pinch, a desperado slinging out a shotgun or rocket launcher quickly if his pistols fail him.
Also, with this seccond version of the Gunslinger concept, here might be an alternative requirement:
Requires : Son of a gun (1), Juggler (1), Intuition (1)
Any thoughts?

Requests For Features / Keycards
« on: October 23, 2010, 16:35 »
One of the major mechanics in the Doom level design were the red, yellow and blue key cards with corresponding doors. Seeing this in DoomRL would add to the feel of having this.
Implementing this might be a pain, as you'd might have to ensure that the keys are not spawned beyond doors, or the doors do not block access to the exit. Alternatively, keys might carry over to other levels, and while having all three keys would negate the challenge provided by the doors, they would take up precious inventory space, and may not be an option in melee, pacifist or marksman runs. To keep from just shooting or shotgunning the doors open, they might be armored like walls, requiring rockets or other high powered weaponry (with precious ammunition expenditure) to bypass without keys.
Perhaps such doors would be associated with vaults and the like, set templates rather than being placed at random doors, blocking off access to items, or even special level exits.

I am proud to announce my first completion of any challenge, much less one involving my favorite weapon, the pistol. At last I am an Angel of Marksmanship.
My biggest challenge when starting my runs was getting through the arena. Yes, not a requirement, but I really, really wanted to get that power mod early. Some games would put me in bad spawns at the end of a round, grouping cacodemons and demons around me while I'm trying to reload, other times it was just YASD.
This run got off to a good start, hoarding ammunition early, getting a lot of good mods (a LOT of bulk mods), I had little trouble early. I entered one map, saw that 'there is something really valuable here!' and started praying for a green pistol. What I got was a Baron who just ... would not die ... I pumped endless pistol rounds until he dropped. And I found that I had worn the Cybernetic armor he was wearing down to 32%, I wish I had screenshotted it. Another frustrating thing was getting a firestorm pack ... only to find that coveted second power pack to complete my kata pistols.
The Hellgate wasn't as much of a problem as I expected. Run back to the door, and let the souls and demons funnel through one at a time, and close the door whenever you can to reload. I had dodgemaster by the time I fought the bruiser brothers, wasn't that bad.
Once I got Gun Kata ... it was pretty smooth sailing, so long as I was careful to pop around corners, and never give anything too long of a time to get a shot off at me.
My main concern in Hell was the fact that I wasn't getting much in the way of new pistol rounds, and I was worried about vile packs. My first vile pack wasn't so bad. In fact, it solved my ammunition problem in an amazing way:

Finding the Hellstaff was a lucky break, and it pulled me out of a couple pinches, I also grabbed a nuke I found, simply because I wanted the option to take down the Cyberdemon if the fight went south. I wasn't anticipating finding an invuln on level 24, but I took advantage of it anyway ...

What resulted was an excellent fight ... and I killed a LOT of barons, but I just didn't have enough armor and health to ignore the swarm and focus on the EVIL, I was running low, tried to hellstaff back for a safe reload and ... welll ...
Thanks for the read, and I hope that someone found this entertaining. I love pistol builds, and it's an honor to walk into the hallowed doors reserved for the fraternity of marksmen.
I hope to do a power build next time.

56 of those were killed.
And 9 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.
Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 13 souls claim to have killed him...
1 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
11 killed the bastard and survived.
1 showed that it can outsmart hell itself.

0.9.9.1 / [M|100%|YAAM] Pistols Kick Ass!
« on: October 16, 2010, 06:56 »
I guess I'm reaching a point where I'm no longer a newbie. I've been struggling to graduate from ITYTD to HNTR for the past few weeks. I love pistol builds, they're fast, can deal a lot of damage, but they have definite survivability and ammunition problems, having to balance survivability with damage output in your build, and you really need to ration your pistol rounds, making every one count. I've been improving with them, learning about different pistol builds including and excluding MGK. I even managed to get to L22 on an AoMr run. But to no avail, I could not break the M barrier with pistols.
I finally managed to complete HNTR with an Ammochain build, but I couldn't feel like I deserved to post the mortem. Agility mods + tech + infinite ammo + plasma rifles = a powerful combination. I was shocked to actually find the run almost easy. And aside from the first HNTR, there was nothing special about the run. I felt almost dissapointed.
Fast forward to yesterday ... I start over, never having tried a damage pistol build, stacking SoB early before going for Dualgunner, simply to give my early game shotgun some punch. The RNG was kind to me, showering me with mods ... including five tech mods before the hellgate, enough for me to get Whizkid, despite the fact that I hadn't planned it.
I had an amusing moment in the Halls of Carnage where shotty spam had blown open the door to the BFG room. I waltz in to find a Hellknight hoovering up the rockets and generally sitting on my BFG ... Why do Barons and Knights run around picking up ammo? It's not like they use it.
Fire -- Choose target... The hell knight fires! You are hit!
You pump a shell into the combat shotgun chamber.

That BFG, coupled with a bulk mod would make the Hellgate survivable, and saved my ass countless times with the late game Vile Packs. I think it was getting the Beretta that really made this run so beautiful, and if I'd found another power mod, I'd have ended up with two pistols doing 2d6 damage per shot. The past few levels were hair raising, and more than once I found myself trading BFG shots with immense amounts of incoming fire from Vile Packs ... even getting pinned against the wall ... having to carefully pick whether to fire, change armor, pop health kit or Run on level 23.
The fight with the Cyberdemon was a little less comfortable than with a MGK build, simply because without Dodgemaster sidesteping those rockets was no longer a sure thing, and actually made it a close fight.
With sweaty palms and bloodshot eyes I finally watched the bastard explode, and I was blown away in awe at the Mortem. I'll stop chattering you and show what you're all to see. I humbly admit my first YAAM, accomplished with a damage pistol build, on Hey, Not Too Rough:
I can't really credit this one completely to skill, not by a long shot ... much of what I used was learned from pouring through these boards and the Wiki ... and I received much RNG love, but I'm still happy as hell that I pulled it off.

Before him 64 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
46 of those were killed.
And 8 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.
Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 10 souls claim to have killed him...
1 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
8 killed the bastard and survived.
1 showed that it can outsmart hell itself.

I can't really credit this one completely to skill, not by a long shot ... much of what I used was learned from pouring through these boards and the Wiki ... and I received much RNG love, but I'm still happy as hell that I pulled it off.

It's funny, I was recently involved in a debate in the discussion forum on the subject of 'what are you willing to risk it all for not destroying something' I ran into a special case.
Today on a ITYTD (I know, no big deal, I'm a newbie) run with Ammochain, I was beautifully geared up, had Onyx armor in my pack, was wearing Malek's armor, had two bulk mods on my BFG, accuracy and two tech mods on my plasma rifle, and was ready to take on anything I walked into. I was also carrying a nuke. I get to level 24 and low and behold, I find an invulnerability ... with a vile reverant pack sitting on top of it. I should have just BFG'ed it all to hell, but I took my time, sniping the viles from afar, and never getting close enough so that reverant missle splash would destroy the invulnerability orb. I did manage to clear it all out, carefully ... and with the use of a homing teleport, this is what I ended up with:

Considering the difficulty level, yes, not that much of an accomplishment, but it was still exciting to see for the first time. I'm slowly working to transition to HNTR, I'm getting out to early twenties before the Mancubi get me, but I'll get there.
In retrospect, I probably should have saved that power mod for my chaingun or plasma rifle, but that combat shotty was my mainstay until I got Ammochain.

Discussion / Dualgunner pistol builds - with or without whizkid, power or bulk?
« on: October 04, 2010, 16:56 »
You have to think carefully about choosing mods. If I go whizkid, I try to get both power and bulk on my pistols (not so much agility because I LOVE my eagle eye). I feel that bulk mods are better for dual-gunner pistols if you're not going for a kata build, if you're going Gun-Kata, yeah, power mods because magazine capacity is a moot point. However, without Kata ... dual-gunner fires fast, and you'll be getting an extra 2d4*2 damage before each reload (add 2 or 3 points for SOG), rather than the 2d5 averaged over the twelve shots, statistics and probabilities isn't my strong point, and I'm sure someone could prove statistically that power mods work out better in the long run ... *shrug*.
