Somebody said that while Master Traits was a good idea, it kind of shoehorns people in to one of 7 builds. I'll admit, I can't remember that last time I did a run without getting a master trait.

So I was thinking, and I figured that master traits in itself was not the problem, the problem was that there were only master traits for 1-2 builds per weapon. For example, if you want to play Shotgun Active, you're in a spot of bother because Shotgun Passive has a master trait that blows DM SM out of the water.

For those not in the know, Active is "Dodge a lot", Passive is "Have lots of armour/HP" and Tactical is "Don't let enemies see you"

So one solution is to make master traits more general and apply to numerous builds at once but I'm not sure that this is possible. A solution I perfer would be to make more master traits, until every build is possible from Rapidfire Active to Shotgun Tactical.

For example:
Run 'n' gun: DM TH, allows movement during chain-firing, but the game will only fire at your last target or a random one if you have no last target. (Turns off TaN)
Anticipation: DM SM, enemy accuracy always behaves as though you're at max range.
Hard as a Rock: TaN 3 Wiz, gives 1 extra armour if you spend the last move firing a weapon, 2 while chainfiring. (Turns off SoB)
Fireangel: Change it to something more accessable, like HR 2 Fin 2 Iro 2.

What they block off isn't really important unless I've put it in brackets.

This covers pretty much every possible shotgun/rapidfire build, and puts us at a nice even 10 master traits.

Now that 0.9.9 is imminent (4 days or so, people) and everyone feeling particularly gluttonous for spoilers already knows about the new challenges AND master traits, I suggest this addendum to the post-mortem title convention:

AoMC - Angel of Max Carnage, duh
AoSg - Angel of Shotgunnery, duh

However, now that master traits basically DEFINE the build you have chosen and you can only get one, I also suggest adding this to the convention:

MBm: Master Trait Blademaster
MVp: Master Trait Vampyre
MAD: Master Trait Army of the Dead
MFa: Master Trait Fireangel
MGK: Master Trait Gun Kata
MAc: Master Trait Ammochain
MCe: Master Trait Cateye
NMT: No master trait.

Guess what, cateye is now a master trait. Requires Triggerhappy and Intuition, turns off TaN and Reloader.

It kicks neverending amounts of ass on AoMC and AoMs. (If you've forgotten, AoMC makes all damage rolls return maximum damage, for both you and enemies)

Also yeah, I'm playing 0.9.9. Jealous? We just need to make sure it's got no bugs.

Requests For Features / New weapon class - Exotic Weapons

In the beta, uniques have undergone a few changes. For starters, there's a lot more of them. I think we managed to double the amount, but don't quote me on that. Also, the uniques that aren't too outlandish (eg. Minigun counts, trigun and nuclear BFG probably wouldn't) can now be modded.

I suggest adding a new class of weapon (I like "Exotic Weapons") that are slightly better than common weapons, on par with advanced weapons. They start with more specialised stats than their common counterparts and can only be modded once no matter how much whizkid you have, much like the "semi-uniques" of 0.9.9 RC1.

Many uniques of 0.9.9 RC1 could be turned in to exotic weapons, like the minigun and plasma shotgun. Both are barely better than their common counterparts, they're just more specialised. Plasma shotgun is the shotgun for people that aren't doing a shotgun run, minigun is the chaingun for people that either have too much ammo or too much EE.

Exotic weapons are weirdly (You could even say exotically) coloured as to stand out, but do not make a level message. They're more common than uniques and advanced weapons, you'll see about 6-8 per run (You might get 2 of the same exotic weapon, but it's highly unlikely). Unlike uniques, they have a minimum level, so you wont get exotic plasma weaponry until after level 10.


This is to both cut down on the amount of uniques (and possibly make room for EVEN MORE) and give players a bit more variety in their runs. I don't think uniques are doing the job as effectively as they could right now, because you only get 1-2 and it's either "Hey this is exactly the one I wanted" or "Oh, I'll pick that up to tally it then immediately drop it". Exotic weapons are good enough where they'll make you consider changing your trait build a little bit, or if they're totally useless to you, maybe one of the next 4 will be better.

Requests For Features / Spicing up Ao100

I mentioned on the IRC (irc.quakenet.org:6667-6669, #chaosforge) that the beta badges I was going to skip would probably be the centurial ones because I find Ao100 tedious. This led to a bit of a discussion about how we could make Ao100 more of a unique and exciting experience. We came up with a few ideas...

Add in the special levels, but more spread out. Near the end (Level 70+ or so) you get Ao100-only special levels, which are incredibly challenging.

Add in Ao100-only special levels. My favourite was the mini-mortuary, a vile spin on classic arenas.

Make Ao100-only enemies. Someone suggested (possibly as a joke) AoD caves, where there's a whole bunch of demons/lost souls... and the AoD. You can shoot at him, of course, but that doesn't stop him from being twice as fast as a lost soul and having as much HP as the cyberdemon.

So what are your suggestions for it? Make them as excruciatingly difficult as you like, Ao100 is supposed to be the hardest challenge. Besides, you're dealing with level 16 marines with 5+ uniques here, they need a challenge.

Beta 4, among other cool new things, introduces badges. There's about 90 of them, split in to 5 ranks:
Bronze: Anyone can get these, really.
Silver: Reasonably easy. Usually "Beat X challenge on any difficulty"
Gold: Somewhat difficult. Kornel said "The average player should strive to get all golds"
Platinum: Very very hard. Kornel said "The average player will only get a few platinums, in his 'field of expertise'"
Diamond: Absolutely god damn crazy, like "Beat Ao100 in an hour or less... on nightmare."

So in this I get a medal and 2 badges.
Malicious Knives: I dunno. Either kill lots of stuff with knives or just kill the cyberdemon with a knife.
Gold Berserker: Beat AoB on any difficulty.
Platinum Strongman: Beat AoB. You aren't allowed any one-of-a-kind weapons, like the LS, uniques or even the chainsaw!

Requests For Features / [Balance] The BFG - Too Awesome to Use

I've noticed that in my runs, I never use the BFG unless I'm fighting the cyberdemon (and even then, I'm usually not playing rapidfire so I might use the LS or a shotgun). In my most recent Nightmare! shotgun game, I decided that maybe my shotguns weren't going to be enough for this level and that I had cells to spare, so I might as well fire off a couple of hundred cells and just take out the cyberdemon with my shotgun.

So I go up to the nearest 10 Revenant + 2 Vile pack (I had Iro 3, TaN 3 and red armour) and start shooting. I realise about 2 BFG shots in that I had accomplished little other than getting them all to 30% HP and destroying my reloading cover. With no phase devices, I died shortly thereafter.

It was a brutal reminder (I was on level 24) of why I never use the BFG, because it MIGHT kill everything but it DEFINITELY destroys all of your cover.

I suggest making the chance for a BFG to destroy walls MUCH lower, but keep the item destruction rate about the same as it is now.

Or change it so that the BFG has 2 explosion radiuses, one for full enemy damage and high wall destruction chance, one for half enemy damage and no wall destruction chance. The first explosion would be as large as a normal rocket, the second would be anything that you can see, no matter how far away it is.

Alrighty, I've basically finished everything about my DoomRL mod except for actually making it. So I got some questions about the features I'm not sure if I'll have to program in or if it's already there.

1. If you give an enemy a "move <direction>" command, but the player is in the way, does it automatically melee attack the player?
2. Is it possible to make a special level that has white stairs and red stairs? (i.e allow the player to choose if he wants to do a series of special levels or just the first one)
3. Is it possible to check if the player has any HP packs, and destroy one or more if they do? (Hahaha)
4. Is it possible to destroy all items on the level? The walls must remain unharmed though.
5. Do items give you points on use? If so, is it possible to change the point value of an INDIVIDUAL item without changing the rest of that particular item type?
6. Does the game distinguish between dodging something with a sidestep and just having the enemy miss? Is it possible to keep a tally of "sidestep dodges" and "lucky dodges"?
7. Is it possible to make a special level with 2 different possible layouts? Is it possible to bias the RNG towards one of the possibilities?
8. Is it possible to change the messages the game gives you in the top two rows depending on difficulty? (Okay that's pretty obvious but whatever)
9. Is it possible to give an enemy "Move to this co-ordinate" command?
10. Does the game track when an enemy refuses to move because it was blocked by a wall/lava/whatever? (If it doesn't, that'd be a good AI upgrade for the current getting-trapped-by-lava-while-you-shoot-them-from-far-away AI)

Not pictured: Malek's Armour (Aparantly the cyberdemon can shoot it faster than it can regenerate, who'da thunk it!) and the 6 HP packs I used while fighting him.

The (un)official DoomRL strategy guide! It will teach you how to shoot things until they die, and how to avoid being shot until you die!

Reworded some stuff with a vengeance.
Added all the new stuff from 0.9.9.3 and some of the stuff I missed in 0.9.9.2.
Added a couple of new strategies to the weapons section, and made my AoHu strategy 'fuller' (now that I've actually won AoHu and all)
Added some notes for AoRA (because aparantly my guide hasn't had any since I started it. Who knew?)
Gave finesse a more positive opinion, now that I've realised Finesse 2 and a Combat Shotgun is about as handy as Ammochain and a Plasma Rifle.
Put in at least 3 instances of praise for the tactical shotgun, stopping only barely short of telling people playing AoMr to get it.

*** A new master trait, if you haven't seen Malek's run. It heavily increases shotgun damage (It's very noticeable at long ranges) but closes off hellrunner AND finesse.
**** Never fired once, I assure you. If I didn't fire it when I was on 9 HP and staring down a cyberdemon, I probably wouldn't fire it anywhere else anyway.
***** Killing these with a shotgun is unbearable. You need assault shotgun shenanigans just to take 20% or less damage.
*6 Why did I go here? No-one knows! It's the mystery of the run.
*7 Cybie's melee attack is incredibly powerful and almost never misses. So basically when I was right next to him on 9 HP, his chance of killing me was 99% unless I ran the hell away. I dodged the rocket he fired instead, somewhat luckily.

Hurr hurr I won a shotgun game on hard.

ASSAULT SHOTGUN SHENANIGANS:
Its reach is longer than your sight radius, allowing you to costantly fire it at someone beyond your sight radius. You should always roll above 10 damage, so they get knocked back every turn.

With acid and napalm barrels, pushing an arachnotron in to melty floor is hilariously easy.

It can be fired around corners, just like the chaingun. Except it never misses.

My sixth or so attempt at a speedrun, first that actually won. I make a ludicrous amount of mistakes that end up costing me lots and lots of time, so it's not really that fast yet. I clocked in at about 27:40, from choosing my first trait to the big explosion at the end.

My big mistakes are:
Going to hell's arena (But it probably saved a bit of time thanks to the rocket launcher, so I might go here in my "Real" speedrun.)
Picking up FAR too much 10mm ammo
Going to hell's armory
Only skipping a few levels, even when I had enough equipment to win the rest of the game.
Over-valuing experience. All the time I spent farming monsters was basically wasted.

Oh, and the mortem... I guess.

And I'm gonna brainstorm ideas for a little while to make DoomRL feel more like DooM and DooM 2 now that it's fresh in my mind.

It's been suggested so much before, but ministuns.
My idea for it is that chainguns make them stall for 0.1 seconds per hit, shotguns make them lose all progress unless you barely nick them (So they have to start the delay over again) and the chainsaw completely paralyses them, unless they're a boss or Arch-Vile.

A debriefing screen for each level? Gives kill count, item count and secret count (Levers pulled). Also how long the level took you in in-game seconds and minutes.

Have a small chance for the room with stairs to be specially made:
  • Only one doorway in or out.
  • Has a demon pack or a similar "Suprise, fucker!" enemy inside, like a pain elemental.
  • Stairs are either square in the middle (If it's a big exit room) or up against the wall opposite the doorway (If it's a small exit room)
  • Doorway is not brown (Possibly dark green?), says "Door - EXIT" when examined, and can't be shot down.

I'm pretty sure the sounds aren't the same in DoomRL and DooM 2. Revanent idle is different, for example.

The rocket launcher in DooM 2 is much more powerful than DoomRL's, at the expense of being very easy to kill yourself with.
I'm not quite sure how you could bring a "Dangerous to the user" element in to a roguelike though, considering you can think before firing.

Alt-Fire for plasma gun: Choose 3 targets to randomly split the shots between. DooM 2 quickly burned this technique in to my mind as a good emergency move.

Alternative to current shotguns:
Shotgun. If you pass a +1 accuracy roll, damage dropoff is reduced by 80%. This only applies to enemies that are on your green aiming line.
Combat Shotgun. If you pass a +3 accuracy roll, damage dropoff is nulled. This only applies to enemies that are on your green aiming line.
Double Shotgun. If you pass a -2 accuracy roll, damage dropoff is halved. This only applies to enemies that are on your green aiming line.

This makes shotguns a good alternative to the chaingun (Which they are, even at medium range in DooM 2), but keeps their AoE damage as low as it is right now.
However, this also makes Eagle Eye a staple trait for every single weapon (bar BFG), so I'd suggest removing it and making accuracy rise by 0.5 on levelup instead.
