So after I finally succeeded at Ultra-Violence, I managed to defeat the cyberdemon without taking a single hit. Partially this is because of the fact that I have a decent dodging strategy going, but it's also because I had such a huge cocktail of traits that I easily ripped through him in roughly 60 ticks (That's 6 in-game seconds, if you don't know)

Contrast "Hey, Not Too Rough", which has the hardest cybie fight. You'd be lucky to hit level 9 (Unless you YAAM it like I do occaisionally) and the fight is made a lot harder as it lasts roughly twice as long, giving him double the chances to peg you with a rocket.

The AoD doesn't suffer from this as much, because if you manage to get more kills in a UV melee than you do in a HNTR melee then you are a crazily-good meleer. As such, you'll have roughly the same stuff in both difficulties and a buff of UV AoD isn't neccesary.

JC, the final super-duper megaboss is something that I've only faced on ITYTD so I wouldn't really know how he feels on UV or even HMP, but I'm going to go ahead and assume that he isn't buffed.

So how do we make the Cybie and JC fights more of an actual challenge on UV, instead of a "You beat the first 24 levels then win"? I'm up for more suggestions, but here's a few of mine, with suggested values for each difficulty.

-Cybie AND JC: Decrease their firing and reload times (+10%, 0, -5%, -10%, -25%)
-JC: Make him immune to his own rocket launcher. (0, 0, Somewhat resistant, Immune, Immune to all NPC damage)
-Cybie: Give him more HP (0, 0, +20%, +40%, +80%)
-JC: Make him spawn better things (Knight/Baron mix, Barons, Baron/Arach Mix, Arachs, Arachs)

"Listen... uh, was it Thomas?"
"Yes. Don't forget the name, you'll be seeing it in papers some day."
"Right. Anyway, we're tired of all these weirdos joining up with the UAC. We once accepted a pacifist. We fucking let a pacifist down there."
"Hah, that pussy couldn't've even surviv-"
"He nuked level 25."
"Huh."
"So we're sick of weirdos and we want someone normal down there this time. I trust you're normal?"
"I suppose you could call me that."

So I'm monitoring the Phobos base when blah blah blah blah. I did do level 1 without taking a single bullet in my magnifecant body, however. UAC: "Don't get used to it."

As with all the thrill seekers playing manly difficulties, I find some pretty big guns early. I had a Chaingun with a damage mod by level 5! Hahaha, rip and tear, rip and tear...

I still don't do hell's arena though. That's quite possibly the quickest way to euthenase yourself these days. Chained court was fun though. You get like 800 bullets by the end, and there's nothing more satisfying than kiling Barons (God damn it I hate Barons) with a chainsaw.

The one thing I hate about being a manly man playing his manly difficulties is the sudden influx of Knights and Barons. The bastards don't drop ammo and they do rediculous amounts of damage. I had to go all whimpy and hide behind walls, shooting at them blind. It works reasonably well though and you still get to hear the bastards scream.

I found a rocket launcher just before the wall, and decided to pay it a visit.

"HEY, I'M HERE TO KICK ASS AND-"
*Arch-Vile wails*
"-FUCKING LEAVE."

Dammit, I'd killed everything up until that point. A blemish on my record of ass-kicking. I did the halls of carnage too, mainly for the heals. Oh, and the BFG. I was surprised to see my manly halls of carnage having the exact same former sergeants as the not-as-manly halls of carnage those wimps on HNTR storm through.

Plasma rifles are fun. I swear, I got two arach caves in a row and I still killed all of the damned things. Also I rifle-whipped a mancubus to death, just like I always wanted to.

Then the vaults. I don't get it. Am I supposed to have non-homing phase devices? (Like I'd drag those useless things around)
I did fire so many rockets at the middle wall I started getting experience. Hah hah.

I had a bit of an ammo crisis around level 20, and decided that I had roughly enough ammo to kill Cybie as long as I don't fire another round at anything. Gogo pro pacifist powers!

"Hello, UAC? What do you want?"
"Yo, Thomas here."
"Which Thomas? We've employed no-one but Thomas for over 2 years now."
"The one inside the base right now."
"Oh, right. How's it going down there?"
"Start getting your cash out, cause whoever bet on 'Lives and destroys the cyberdemon' is about to get a profit on his 1:50 odds."
"Hmph. You wouldn't've called just to gloat."
"Yeah, I would've actually. But I do have something to ask."
"Hm?"
"The mortuary. I'm not planning on clearing it, it's just the only stairs I can find right now. I want to know if I could run in and run out without taking too much damage."
"Oh yeah, it's pretty easy to get in to the stairs. Just mind the corpses."
"Oh, good."
*Click*
"At least, I think it is. Maybe I'm thinking of the spider's- oh he's gone. Nevermind then."

He was never heard from again.

--------------------------------------------------------------

So I'm monitoring phobos when everything goes to shit. Big whoop. That's happened like 120 times now, they put it in the job description!

Of course, what I didn't sign up for is the nukes. Aparantly they want to keep hell clean for good this time. The UAC gave me no less than 25 nukes with instructions to arm one of them for 300 seconds whenever I find a new level in the good ol' basement.

The first 15 levels go fine. I did have some close calls with a few of the nukes and used a homing phase device a bit early but hey, I'm only human (One would hope.)

I destroyed the BFG on level 13. Ah-hah-haaah. The UAC told me that they've never seen a marine blow up a BFG before.

However, I made up for it by getting the Jackhammer on level 14. That thing saw more action than any of my other weapons combined. Heck, I was going to go rapid-fire specialisation but then the Jackhammer came along and FORCED me to go shotgun specialisation just because it would be a dishonour to the weapon if I didn't.

The Jackhammer easily cleared out levels 17-21. I was taking so little damage I amassed 10 large health packs.

In level 22, I had a dialemma. I had my jackhammer, which was probably better at AoE damage than the freaking Rocket Launcher I was lugging around, and 10 large health packs. I destroyed the last BFG I saw and I never got to do the city of skulls (Not enough shells at the time). But was it enough for the mortuary? I asked the UAC, who were absolutely no help (Though I've gotten used to that by now), they just said "Of all the 120 marines that we've sent down here, none of them were stupid enough to touch that place."

That sounded like a challenge, so I ran right on in.

It was barely enough. The Arch-Viles possess some sort of primitive brain capable of at least basic tactics. They were far more interested in ressurecting the barons and arachnotrons than they were in actually directly killing me. They often did both in the same second (Bloody fast, they are) but I was up to my ass in arachnotrons and barons before I could say "iddqd".

But by then I was reloading while I moved (I'm not entirely sure why I didn't think of that up until now) and firing big clouds of fluffy death, so I still managed to clear it after using 6 of my health packs. I got this glowy armor thing (looked pretty sturdy, too) and an advanced BFG for my troubles.

Level 24 was a big surprise. The bastards were waiting for me. They'd knocked down every wall and surrounded me (They call it an "arena" or something). With the amount of arch-viles, mancubi and barons it was starting to feel a lot like deja vu. Only this time after I'd killed everything and wasted the rest of my packs, my only reward was the honour of being killed by Mr. Cybie himself.

At level 25, Cybie's little arena, I had the bright idea of using a nuke of my own (I picked up another one on the way) and setting it for 10 seconds. If I couldn't get back up the stairs in time then it'd kill both of us, but that'd still put me in the top 5 most ass-kicking marines ever.

The UAC interveined though. I tried to set up a second nuke but they simply deactivated it with a small message "Are you crazy???"

I cleared the mortuary and agreed to do the whole base under a nuke-enforced time limit, of course I'm crazy. Wait, nuke-enforced time limit?

So I find one of those huge pillars the cyberdemon was hiding behind like a girl and hid on the other side. The idiot obviously smelled my blood in the air (I was looking pretty injured at that point) but couldn't quite figure out how to get around the pillar. So we just sat there laughing maniacally and stupidly mooing for a good 5 minutes at which point the whole place blew up.

Wait a second, that can't've happened. That implies that I died in that explos-

If (Killing the boss of UD is impossible without being berserk) AND (Being berserk during the fight requries luck, and that amount of luck is rediculously high) is true THEN UD is too difficult.

That makes sense, right?

Anyway, you can't kill the boss of UD without being berserk. That's a no-brainer. Without the berserk armor he rips you to shreds (So fast that you can't even use large heath packs because he kills you in 2 actions).

So let's say you had 20 large health packs. Every odd health pack does nothing because he just rips the health right back off, but you get a free hit on him on every EVEN health pack.

So you get 10 hits with your chainsaw +9. It does an average of 12 damage, +9 from your brutish traits. That's 23 damage times 10 which is 230 damage. If you have TWENTY health packs, you wont kill him! You'll still fall short by 20 HP!

So not being berserk isn't an option. We need some berserkness here.

The problem is that being berserk reduces your movespeed to 0.5 seconds for 20 seconds (IIRC), giving you 40 moves before you go normal again.

Now, if you're anything like me, you were battling the demons in the doorway. That doorway is 20 moves away from the boss. And, of course, you'll want 4 to 8 attacks on the boss, that should be enough to kill him while berserk.

As you only have a 4% chance of going berserk on any given attack, if you go berserk with 24-28 moves to spare at the end then you had to have been over 50% lucky. That's right. Unless you can go berserk at will (Like in AoB), you will fail to kill everything in UC more than half the time.

Now complaining about luck in a roguelike is pretty petty, but I can compare this to someone stopping my ingenius way of attempting to play this game (Melee AoLT, works well up until level 16) at the halfway point, asking me to flip a coin and unplugging my machine should I get tails, so I still get to take the moral high ground.

The only way to solve this would be to put a berserk pack next to the boss (Or behind him, if you feel that'd be too easy) or add some sort of skill to the fight instead of just *slash* *slash* *slash* slash* *slash* *slash* until you die because you weren't berserk or he died because you were.

EDIT: Wait, I just tried it with a chainsaw and it turns out that all melee weapons crash the game.

EDIT AGAIN: Wait, I just tried it with a pistol and green armor and it crashed the game too.

And 1 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 1 souls claim to have killed him...
1 killed the bastard and survived.

--------------------------------------------------------------

*1 You'll have to take my word that the last 6% were all in UC.
*2 Whoops. SoaG and SoaB look so similar and are right next to eachother.
*3 TaN kicks ass. It's the new cateye. Also I didn't get trigger happy because by then I was using a plasma rifle for most of my kills and I didn't want to waste ammo.
*4 Always carry at least one.
*5 Only one in every 400 enemies spawned is an arch vile, aparantly.
*6 Most of these hit. I am so pro at blind shots.
*7 Mooost of these are melee runs and UV runs back when I was stupid and didn't like the fact that I was living past level 3.

Other general facts:

Arachnotrons killed in one plasma volley: Around 5
Arachnotrons killed in melee: 3 (When the volley leaves them "Almost dead" it just feels right to pistol whip the last of their health out of them)
Mancubi killed in melee: 1 (These bastards are a bit harder to approach. And they're rarer)
lolwut, I didn't get any stairs to the wall. I think they were overwritten by stairs to the halls of carnage.
Killing cacodemons with a no chaingun and no medpack is impossible, don't tell me otherwise. (Hence I didn't do hell's arena)

And I remember my victory dance rather well. I leant back, thrust my arms in to the air superman-style, let out the manliest "HELL YEESSS" I could muster and then jump up and down punching the air for a few seconds. It was quite the spectacle.

So what's next for me? Well, I only have 900 melee kills out of 4500. I wanted to keep it at twenty-five percent, not twenty!

Off Topic / Roguelike you may wanna check out
« on: December 31, 2007, 03:39 »
(Yeah, this totally isn't advertising. But Kornel said it was okay :P)

Chessrogue (Located here: http://chessrogue.sourceforge.net/), is a pretty decent roguelike based on... argh, I've forgotten. It was based on a board game. Anyway, the problem is that it's only just reached a playable beta release and there's absolutely no community there to help Chris test it and give him feedback. If you're interested drop by his site, play his game and see if you have ideas to help improve it.

Also, if you're living on the international date line, happy new year.

Requests For Features / Reaction time
« on: December 22, 2007, 18:29 »
This problem rarely arises late game (When you don't see imps and sergeants that much, and even if you did you can easily handle them), but is INSANELY annoying (and tends to kill a lot of my HMP games).

Consider this scenario (As this will come up probably 1-3 times in every game)

Code: [Select]
###########
.#......i.#
@+...h...h#
.#..i.....#
###########

Assume the hs are all former sergeants.
What's going to happen when you open the door? 1-2 imps blast you (5-10 damage), the closer sergeant fires (8 damage) and the further one does as well (3 damage). That's 16-21 damage all up and even if you were sitting pretty on 50% HP you're now at death's door.

With the implementation of packs (which for some reason has slightly changed the placement algorithm in early levels) this happens far too often and in a AoI/AoB game (the 2 I'm attempting to beat right now) this is absolutely devistating. In AoI you can't afford to lose 40% HP just by opening a door. In AoB, this suddenly becomes an "Oh no, run away" situation so you lose 40% HP but gain no items or XP.

Hence it seems only fair to add a reaction time and stop them from firing before you can tell that they're there. Let's say 5-10 ticks so you at least have one action (Like closing the door for example) before they start slaughtering you.

Oh, and late-game you can have this happen with cacos and barons! Unless you're on full HP when it happens that's basically going to instantly kill you!

*I have never seen this special level before...
**I love cateye now. So sue me.
***At least I had lotsa ammo.
****All thanks to cateye, and overloading PRs. Heheh.
*****See "New pre-level message".
****** HOW THE HELL CAN HE TAKE 3 OVERLOADED BFG SHOTS!?

This guy was what I like to call: A lucky b**tard.
Here are the lucky things that happened.

Surface: Got all HP packs.
Level 2: See "New pre-level message"
Level 2-9: Nothing but mazes. No hellish caves, no cities, no nothing.
Level 7: Got rocket launcher.
Level 9: Got red armour (my 3rd best game went to level 15 and never saw any)
Level 10: Got PR.
Level 14: Thermied the whole thing while invunerable. See Hell 4(19) to see why I regretted this.
Hell 1 (16): Started 7 squares away from the stairs, in a room with only me and the stairs.
Hell 2 (17): How can hellish caves in hell be lucky!? Well I started at the top (everyone says keep away from the middle) and simply went around the middle to the stairs. I only saw 3 arachs.
Hell 4 (19): I got a supercharge and a inv globe right before the stairs to the cyberdemon. I SHOULDA BROUGHT A THERMIE!!! But I didn't.

Discussion / New pre-level message!
« on: April 22, 2006, 02:17 »
I was strolling through level 2 after hearing "You smell blood in thy air!" and "You sence a passage to a place beond". Of course the 2nd one means I'm going to find hell's arena, but the 1st one affected the game really weirdly.

It went like this:
1. Go down stairs to level 2, see funny blood message.
2. Kill unusually large ammount of humans, find the stairs to hell's arena behind them.
3. Check out the rest of the map, find even more humans and a few imps.
4. Go back to hell's arena staircase. I find to my surprise the huge amount of blood has turned in to 2 chainguns! Man that makes the cacos in HA a lot easier.

EDIT: Good thing I found them, HA's being a bi*** surrounding me with 4 enemies as I start.
EDIT THE SECOND: Just finished HA, I haven't used a medpack, I have a large medpack thanks to the blood item message, and I just hit level 3 in both distance and XP. Man this game's going well. (This is the last edit, because after this everything will not be related to this and I may as well post my post-mortem.)

Poll: wading through dangerous stuff

I picked cells/rockets, anything worse than that and I wouldn't bother.
