Requests For Features / Re: Levers!
« on: December 12, 2008, 15:35 »
I've found that (on ITYTD and HNTR at least) the levers that flood the entire level with acid/lava are incredibly rare anyway... I believe I've seen the "in the state of Denmark..." message only one and the "that gasoline smell? Oh hell..." one once as well... On neither occasion did I pull the lever in question...

However, it turns out that the reason they don't fire around corners is because they can't actually see you. As such, they don't charge you either. You need to give them a reason to come over, like dropping ammo on one side of the corner and waiting on the other.

Which would be so much easier if you could drop stuff in any of the nine squares around you, instead of only being able to drop it on the spot where you're standing... Maybe that could be made an option in the coming version... "d" for a regular drop as we have now and "D" for a directional drop (you'd get a "choose direction" message as you do when you press "c" whilst standing next to more than one open door or you press "f" when weilding a melee weapon)...

That way, in the situation I described previously (except that this time the door is just a gap in the wall)...

.@# . . .
. . . . . h
. .# . . .

... I wouldn't have to come out of cover to drop something into the tile below me to attract the sargeant...

EDIT: Tried another dozen odd times today and I've reached the following conclusion: I can't do it! I just can't fucking do it!!! Arghh! This is the only thing keeping me from trying Haste, Purity, D&D and Red Alert... fucking Angel of Berserk... I've beaten AoI and I've beaten AoLT but I can't even begin to make headway on Angel of Berserk... I still haven't seen the chained court once (though I made it to base level seven once today, so I might have accidentally skipped it in that case) and I'm still no closer to a solution... As far as I'm concerned, the only way I'm ever going to get to captain rank were if (and I very much think this should be done) the AoB requirements for getting the various ranks were each bumped up a rank in the next version, so that sargeant required no AoB levels, lieutenant five, captain ten and major 15... Not letting me play four challenge modes because of one challenge mode that's completely different from any of the others is not only a truly erect dick move, but it's quite possibly a big enough one to turn me off DoomRL entirely, I'm sorry to say... The game giving me a series of challenges to complete so I can unlock more content is fine, but when one of them is totally impossible, I'm more than likely to pack up and move on to something I can actually accomplish instead of continuing to bash my head against the brick wall that is Angel of Berserk...

Unless, of course, one of you knows a magical "make the mode possible" button... No? Didn't think so...

Angel of Insanity sounds like a good way to drive the player insane... I'm just... not a fan of these "mislabel everything" type challenges as they really aren't "challenges" so much as they are the Russian Roulette and I don't know about you, but for me, games of pure chance (such as both kinds of roulette) are not my idea of either challenge or fun...

125
For anyone who's interested, I just got a standard win on AoI on HNTR with about a 95% kill rate... Beat the cyberdemon by the skin of my teeth though...

Quote
You're never going to win AoB ever unless you kill stuff.

That's the thing I have been trying to kill stuff... That's the hole point of this thread, that I wanted some help playing AoB "properly", as opposed to just running past the levels as I had previously, where I managed to get to level 10, which let me unlock sargeant and lieutenant...

Humans: Sergeants you will need to ambush. Unless you can see one around a corner. Shotguns can't shoot around corners (Unlike 10mm weapons seem to be able to) so you can just wait there and he'll be forced by his AI to engage you in melee.

I see... So, basically I have to sit like a lemon mashing the "." key waiting the the sargeant to come to me, as long as it can see me but I'm in a position where it can't shoot me, correct? Sounds like a good (if tedious) idea... But how sharp does the corner in question need to be? Would either of the sargeants be able to shoot me in this situation, for example? I assume the lower one would, but what about the upper one? What if the upper one were two squares closer to me?

Gotcha, gotcha and gotcha on the former humans, imps and demons...

Lost souls: Make sure you only fight one at a time.

I guess that shouldn't be too much of a problem, considering you mostly only see them in the occasional vault early on anyway... I guess you could stand in a doorway and create a bottleneck for them as well...

More general melee tips:
*Snip*

Thanks for the tips... Not that I didn't know about strafing (I'm already using or at least trying to use it), taking off armour while berserk and so on already, but still sounds to me like sound advise... :)

Well, now that I've beaten AoI, I guess I'll give AoB another shot... tomorrow maybe...

Right... Well, anyway, this...

scenarios like a 50 level Ao100 (Ao100 + AoH)

...gave me an idea... Perhaps each combination of modes could be given its own name as well... Ao100 + AoH = Angel of 50, for example... Here's a few others I came up with...

Ao100 + AoH: Angel of 50

AoPure + AoPac: Angel of Bhuddism

AoRA + AoPac: Angel of Passive Agressive

AoRA + AoMas (or maybe AoB + AoMas): Angel of Sadomasocism

That's all I've really got so far... Actually, that's an idea, what if only some of them had names? You know, like little easter eggs or something?

Just going back for a moment to one of the challenges Malek put in his poll (where Angel of D&D and Angel of Nukes, which I can only assume later became Angel of Red Alert, won out), specifically this one...

Quote
Angel of Hallucinations
The game randomly assigns a new 'psychadellic' monkier (and new color/symbol) to every monster, weapon, special level, etc., at the beginning of the game.  You have no way of knowing what a 'monkey launcher' is until you fire it (is it the BFG or an advanced pistol?), and the 'menacing clown' (represented by a bright yellow c) might be the Cyberdemon, a Baron of Hell, or a former human.

There are two problems I can seewith this... This first is that experienced (or even relatively inexperienced) players are going to know what many monsters and items are based purely on thier location... No player in his right mind is going to mistake that BFG in the Halls of Carnage for anything else, even if it isn't called a BFG 9000 in his inventory slot, he'd just have to remember that it was called the "shit slinging uber gun" or whatever, so that he doesn't confuse it with the "uber water gun of uber uberness" that he got off the "super ninja pirate monkey" that turned out to be a former commando and is actually a plasma rifle...

The other problem (which you might have guessed from reading the above paragraph) is that it could easily get too silly... One could easily chock such a mode full of inane pop culture referrences and other facepalm enducing horrors and I'd rather not have to be constantly shutting my eyes to stop them from rolling straight out of their sockets, thanks... :)

With that out of the way, here's a couple I came up with...

Angel of hemophilia

A specail mode that brings back the bleeding mechanic from earlier incarnations of this game, just for a change of pace... Could be combined with any other challenge mode...

Angel of gemini

Select two other challenge modes and try to play under the conditions of both at once... Now, obviously, AoB and AoMr would be incompatible and both of these would be incompatible with AoPac, but they rest of the modes would be more or less compatible, though some could create bizarre (but none-the-less interesting) scenarios like a 50 level Ao100 (Ao100 + AoH)...

128
Alright, this is ridiculous...

It's getting to the point where I'm really starting to think that anyone's who's beaten this challenge is some kind of freak because for my money it's fucking impossible, even on HNTR... Trying to play this challenge seriously (as opposed to just running past everything, which got me to level 10 at one stage, which allowed me to achieve lieutenant rank), I can never get further than base level four, have only gotten to character level three a grand total of once and have never once laid eyes on the chained court (except in the game where I ran past everything)... I've tried over and over again and have failed to make progress... If I didn't just close the window after is says "you die!" but before the mortem comes up, the relevant folder would be clogged with dozens of mortems detailing just how much I suck at AoB by now... Oh sure I know about (and make use of) gift dropping, running, going diagonally in a zig-zag... all that... but is seems only to prolong the inevitable by one floor at most (and that's on a good run)...

So could somebody explain me how this is supposed to work? Could someone tell me what mystical play strategy will allow me to even get to the chainsaw (my current goal for AoB is reaching the chained court, not winning the game, then my goal after that will be to reach level 15 so I can get to captain rank), let alone defeat the cyberdemon? Will the freaks who somehow completed this challenge please come forward? I'm really stumped and frankly, my alienation with this challenge is translating into alienation with the entire game... I really like DoomRL, but AoB is just pissing me off that much...

And for those who are wondering, I don't consider myself completely hopeless... I have thus far completed a standard game on ITYTD and an angel of light travel game on HNTR (one of the other requirements for captain rank, as you know), but Angel of Berserk, thus far, seems impossible, the only conclusion I can draw from the evidence presented to me being that I must doing something wrong... So what is it? Could somebody please explain to this me? Because I... just... don't... get it...

I was under the impression that the left and right vaults could be busted open by rocket launcher, but that you needed to get lucky with a phase device to get into the middle one... Is this somewhere close to being correct?

2) A "Time left" counter for berserk, invincibility and envirosuit. Because who didn't find himself into a situation where he was rambo'ing around because he was invincible anyway, then suddenly you become vunerable again... Or you're taking a lava bath and all of the sudden your envirosuit wears off? The "Time left" counter would make you able to at least time it a little bit...

At the very least there could be some sort of warning (like in actual Doom) when it's about it's about to wear off...

Actually it's not mine, and it pisses me off. I want to go commercial someday with the name ChaosForge, and the fact that chaosforge.com is taken really annoys me. Some guy has it registered for at least 7 more years, and he didn't reply neither to e-mail nor snailmail.

I know this topic is old, but perhaps a slightly alternatve name like "thechaosforge.com" or "choasforgegames.com" is in order?

OK, first off, the game already has a mini-boss (
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
) that gives you a powerful melee weapon that provides an armor bonus... Throwable combat knives have already been discussed by others and dismissed as unworkable (for various reasons) and I'm not really a fan of the dual knives thing, but I do like the idea of a specail multi-square attack for the chainsaw... Indeed, the character from the Doom comic did something like this when he hacked three zombies apart more-or-less at once with the chainsaw...

Super Shotgun. Unique, basically the next-step-up from the double shotgun. I'm thinking it would work either identically to the SSG (only bigger) or be a sorta blend between the SSG and the combat shotty -- a 6 round mag fired 2 at a time with pump-action reloading.

I like that idea... It'd have to be a unique though as it sounds very powerful... I suppose some might argue that we already have a weapon somewhat like that (the Pancor Jackhammer), but perhaps someone with more shotgun knowledge than me should take a look at this one...

Quote
Hunting Rifle. Not sure if it should be unique or not; either way, it'd have a 1 round clip, a very slow fire rate, moderate reload rate, be very accurate (with accuracy degrading as they get closer) and deal lots of damage. 10mm ammo.

Whilst I think this could fill an interesting niche (as it is, all the weapons more or less fall under the broad categories of melee, chaingun, rocket launcher or shotgun types (pistols don't count because any dualgunner build worth its salt does the same thing as a chaingun build, that is to say, it pumps out large amounts of 10mm ammo in a short space of time), with no powerful single shot non-blast radius "sniper rifle" style weapon), I get the distinct feeling it's low ammo use would be unbalanced, unless perhaps it used multiple rounds of amunition to fire a single bullet (but then that's more or less just the chaingun in a different outfit)...

Quote
Mini-rocket Launcher. Unique (or not?), fires rockets that deal half damage of a normal one with a reduced blast radius, but has a moderate-sized clip and fires the rockets very quickly (perhaps even in a burst). Slow reload.

Interesting, though the scarceness of rockets and the fact that you can't carry very many might negate this weapon's potential somewhat...

Quote
Modulous Blade. This may or may not be pointless. I don't know if melee weapons can have mods applied to them or not; if they can't, I'm thinking this would be a weak-ish melee weapon that could have accuracy, damage, and speed mods applied to it as if it were an advanced weapon.

Meh... doesn't excite me really, but perhaps people with more AoB experience could give a more educated opinion on this one...

To all the Vista haters: if you can't keep your system stable, do not use computers. This system is not cure for every ilness, but it is not as bad as you wish it were.

I personally don't understand why some people despise Vista so much... Having used Vista for over a year now, I've been quite pleased with it... At the very worst it's no worse than XP and you've got to admit, Microsoft's vastly improved the interface... I've found it's a lot more pleasant to use than XP...

Admittedly Internet based individuals developing small megabyte sized titles like this one and Battleships Forever have fequently found that they have to retool their programmes to make them run (or at least run stably) on Vista and I've found many old titles don't run (or at least don't run properly) on Vista, but that's pretty much a given... I have games on my 98 right now that won't even run on my XP, let alone my Vista... Should we not have moved to DVDs just because DVD players can't run VHS tapes?

Seriously, why do you think some people hate Vista so much, skarczew?

Far more so, I would assume. Approximately 1% of my games on XP (Which is supported, as are the OSes you listed) crash, and none of them were inrecoverable.

I see... Well, I'll have to try it on the other computers some time then...
