Century Lounge / Re: [M|ArchAo666|29%|YAVP] Pop goes the Apostle!
« on: February 10, 2021, 10:31 »Any slog through 666 levels deserves some congratulations, so... congrats! :D I suggest you spoiler-tag the part about the conditions for wielding Dragonslayer. I know this game doesn't get much attention any more, but Kornel did request that people do that after that information became public knowledge.
Thanks! And already, tried to do so now.
Once you've got DS and have a permanent 60% boost to all resistances, I'd say it kind of doesn't matter what armour you're using any more. :P (Though I suppose having 95% to all resistances could be an interesting novelty) :)
Certainly any more than 35% resistance would be overkill that wouldn't actually count (if I'm getting it right, it's capped at 95%), though of course the most important trait would be raw Protection.
I do think I had a bunch of resistances that were less than 95% in the Berserker Armor, would COULD account for getting more damage than in super-Cerberus gear but even that seems dubious with the BA having more Protection.
Nukes go off instantly without a countdown if you drop them in acid or lava. That must've been what happened.Oh I see, I didn't realise that was a thing. That's almost certainly what happened then. Hard to make out terrain with the combination of the red-filter making it hard to see what anything is and Cerberus Boots that stopped me taking damage from any of it.
This is really interesting to me. Uniques aren't supposed to appear again once you've picked them up, (which is why it's a good idea to always pick up Uniques, even if they're ones that are useless, since it increases the chances that the next Unique you find will be one you want) but what you're saying suggests that if you use the Hellwave Pack directly from the ground, that gets around that. Huh...
That seems to be what it suggest, assuming I noticed/remembered it right and didn't get mixed up, of course.
Yeah, it looks like the Devteam never actually tested the Apostle to make sure it works properly. :P It consistently gives an error message when you kill him. That's probably not going to be fixed for a long time, if at all, since they're all working on Jupiter Hell now.
That would make sense, I wouldn't expect too much active playtesting with how obscure and tricky it is to get to him. Just glad it didn't crash the game or invalidate my save and such.

That definitely makes sense, I could see how Hellrunner first would be good. I had been going Intuition first for the sake of seeing where powerups to heal and sometimes maps where but that's obvious a bit chance-y on whether it'd work out.
For Red Alert, I was definitely thinking a Master that would mesh with Hellrunner, like Blademaster, Gun Kata, Fireangel or so on.
For Pacifist, definitely going Masterless, Hellrunner/Dodgermaster, Tough as Nails and Ironman seeming to be solid choices for obvious reasons (plus probably still Intuition.
Also maybe a strange note but for the latter I had a thought of sometimes visiting special levels just since I'd know exactly where the stairs are even without stair-sense.
Confidence/Overconfidence, I was thinking it should be a skill line that "takes off" quickly since there are fewer levels to gain. And not using a Pistol or Melee build (due to how those tend to have a weaker start and in the latter case I can't get the Chainsaw).

Discussion / Re: How Dead is this Game?

Indeed, Jupiter Hell is taking the attention now, particularly since that's in active development and changing quite a bit.
I occasionally pop in here sometimes, though obviously less often now.
One thing I'd like to mention is that the Jupiter Hell Discord has a channel for this game. Not a very active one, but it's there at least.

I was actually kind of struggling to get into the game a little bit, starting and struggling on Medium, I switched down to Easy and checked out a bunch of guides and it made me feel better about the whole thing.
I feel pretty good about my trait choice but I feel like I was playing dumb with my tactics and being clumsy, also had an overflowing inventory much of the time. I can definitely get better. Army of Darkness is great though, which is funny since I'm not fond of its DoomRL equivalent.

Century Lounge / [M|ArchAo666|29%|YAVP] Pop goes the Apostle!
« on: January 24, 2021, 00:41 »
For some backstory, I've actually had some thoughts now of taking a break from this game, now I've bought Jupiter Hell and I'm likely to switch to that for at least a bit I figure.
...But this is something I really wanted to do: Try Archangel of 666, finally use the Dragonslayer + Berserker Armor, hit max level and take out the Apostle. So I thought I'd cross that off my list before switching to Jupiter Hell.
Build choice seemed obvious: I gotta be a Scout for easy stairdiving and I gotta have a melee Master since I'll be stuck with the Dragonslayer so Blademaster it is! Hellrunner came first since I wouldn't be going straight into melee (though I did get into Chainswording people earlier than might be strictly justifiable and it seemed to work out). After the Master, Finesse into Whizkid, Dodgemaster and Juggler seemed obvious. Of course after a while, I started picking up whatever seemed helpful since I was running out of things to pick. My very last level I grabbed Eagle Eye over Reloader since the former could be possibly helpful maybe, while the latter would be 100% pointless. I mean, Juggler obviously stopped being useful after I got stuck with the Dragonslayer but I can't say I was dearly missing an extra level of Eagle Eye.
I re-assembled the Chainsword after Whizkid so I could P-mod it, I think I had a fliud-related mishap that destroyed my first Tactical Boots so I had to rebuild them anyway... And ended up throwing away the A-modded pair because Nyarlaptotep's Boots were even better, it seemed. For a while I was lugging around an Onyx Mod, if I didn't find the Berserker Armor somehow then I was going to see if I could do the Cybernano assembly to add it to my list. Of course, that didn't end up happening.
I almost got screwed out of picking up the Dragonslayer
For a while I was stressed, first that I might have accidentally selected Angel of 100 instead due to the character screen and fake-out level messages... Then I was worried that I might have missed the Berserker Armor thanks to the annoying Berserk screen filter making it hard to see what anything is. Thankfully that didn't turn out to be the case and I was able to snag it! It kind of disappointed me at first because I thought it was protecting less than my Cerberus Gothic, but I don't think the math holds up on that and not needing to worry about armor durability anymore was awesome! I will say I initially misunderstood the formula and the Protection worked the exact opposite way I thought it would.
When I got the respective gear I dumped out weapons and then armor, eventually Mods too. Then I stockpiled Large Medkits to be safe, plus Phase Devices to aid with stairdiving and nukes in case I got Invulnerability so I could just clear out a level and go straight to the end (weirdly when I did that to Level 616 the nuke went off immediately without a timer. O.o Thankfully I was already invincible when it did. I wonder if there was some deliberate thing happening there since that's the fake "number of the beast".)
As far as tactics, I mostly started stairdiving after getting all my gear but for a while I would seek out enemies just to make doubly sure I got to Level 25, and even to the end I often sought out healing items I saw just to make sure I was good on health. I kept picking up Uniques though, mostly just to pad my item list, though the Hell Staff was genuinely handy as a free extra phase in case I didn't like where I started. I also think I ran into two Hellwave Packs (used the first off the ground, then came across another that I picked up) but I'm pretty sure I misunderstood something unless I ran into an odd bug there.
Nightmare Arachnotrons swarming around me were the closest I came to actually dying, but my stores of medkits helped me anyway. A common annoyance later on were those multi-line messages I had to Enter-mash through to keep moving.
When I got to Level 666 there was some kind of flash or explosion or something that killed the enemy I saw and blue-texted but I looked anyway and found the Apostle! ...And got an error message (preserved in my Mortem).
But it still registered, getting me the Medals, Arch-Vile rank and a hilariously inflated score topping my scoreboard.
For as long and tedious as it was over multiple sessions, I still enjoy the accomplishment of having done this quite a bit, and I can't rule out ever doing it again either. It's just kind of neat to be so overpowered and carefree in this game, as a contrast to how I usually feel on it.

Oh yeah, it was amazing! No need for any other weapons at that point. :)
The possibility of crazy stuff like that is part of why I prefer Shottyhead over Army of the Dead - you can't really EXPECT it to happen, but it's nice to have it on the table. The other, more down-to-earth reason is that is the availability of Assemblies to help shotguns get past armor.
Of course having so much of my playstyle in this challenge rest on finding Exotics and rare Mods isn't super healthy so I can see the benefit of the more conservative and reliable option MAD gives, but in this case I prefer to try and take the risk.

I'd seen some love for Ammochain in this challenge, but I'm still definitely on your side here. No need for ammo + extra healing beats less need for ammo and maybe keeping your distance, I'd think.
Well, not a question you asked but before I address yours I want to explain that I picked up Badass 2 because I needed to get the first level and another Trait anyway, plus it's handy in cases like grabbing a Supercharge Globe and the potential to fill yourself to 200% and keep it with Vampyre.
As for why I picked Badass before Brute & Berserker... I had all that nice ammo to blow and little desire to go around stabbing people initially, so I thought it would be more beneficial to pick my more "generalist" traits first and then shore up melee (since while they might not be super beneficial, Brute doesn't help at all unless I'm hitting people, though Berserker has defensive uses still).

Anyone got any basic strategy stuff for:
• Angel of Pacifism
• Angel of Red Alert
• Angel of Confidence/Overconfidence
?
These ones aren't covered on the wiki, or I wouldn't bother you guys here.

This wasn't my first attempt, but I hadn't actually tried it many times before.
I picked a Vampyre build since it seems like the perfect for this challenge (No need for ammo + another source of healing!), though my post Master trait picks were different (on AoB I'd get Finesse into Whizkid but with the limited inventory I just stocked up on more durability).
I had some close calls but I wasn't afraid to back out of things.
Things of note:
• I abused the ammo items early on (Shell Box + Shotgun, then Chaingun + Ammo Chain) until I got going with melee... Then held onto the Chaingun and an ammo chain for a while after just in case.
• I didn't get enough Agility mods to make tactical boots, but I was drowning in Technical so I eventually say "screw it!" and build some Grappling Boots to deal with knockback.
• Hell Level 6 generated a Staff-looking Unique but I had to pass it up since it was in a really bad spot. :(
• My Angelic Armor was in bad shape by the end but I had an Invulnerability Globe near the end so I used that to nuke the Spider Mastermind with the Nuclear BFG and popped the Lava Element against JC, who went down really quick!

Post Mortem / [M|AoSh|94%|YAFW] Caution and luck = I finally beat Angel of Shotgunnery!
« on: January 16, 2021, 13:44 »
After being away for ages, I came back to DoomRL. Angel of Shotgunnery gave me way more trouble than such an easy challenge should.
I almost always went for Shottyhead (Fireangel is obviously useless for the challenge and Army of the Dead doesn't sit right with me with how it clashes with the Assemblies, I can expound if people really want to hear). I chickened out of many of the special levels but I took my chances with Deimos Lab in case I found something useful such as Assault Shotgun + Sniper Mod. No luck on either of those... But I got a Nano Mod! Because of that, I made a mental to make my next levels after Shottyhead Finesse and both Whizkids in case I found a Super Shotgun... In the last few levels I got exactly that! And I'd found a nuke so I was on track for a full win!
With Nano Super Shotgun in hand I could discard my Tactical Shotgun and shells to make room and go nuts with medkits and armor and such. I could skip the Mortuary because of my nuke but went into the Lava Pits. I didn't have an environmental suit and didn't have luck with the Phase Devices so I had to just bounce. :( ...But then the last level before Dis had an Invulnerability Globe near the exit! :)
Maybe it's a small thing but this made me really quite happy.

So I'd been doing a bunch of Angel of 100 runs as a Scavenger, primarily for the sake of building all Assemblies, every time I washed out and mostly pretty early.
Here I got in DEEP, from having managed to buid a load of awesome stuff, then nearaly halfway through I rocket-jumped with my projectile hitting a barrel and the explosions annihliated me...
I could probably pull it off again, but this feels so bad that I really want to do something else isntead.

How would you disassemble armor or melee? Because with guns it's unloading while empty.
Also found last time with a Blaster that you can scrap eligible guns as long as they're empty even if they can't be unloaded normally.

Nanofiber Skin Armor (PPN) and Cybernano Armor (PPON) are both "cursed".
According to the wiki at least, I haven't built either yet.
Can't scavengers only scrap guns and not armor though?

All sounds interesting, but I have to admit I don't understand the ASCII (I only play the full graphical version ever).
