Play-By-Forum / Scavenging
« on: April 26, 2015, 01:53 »
Dear players and dungeon masters, storytellers and other dodgy individuals,

As you may know, I like playing RPGs - proper pen&paper roll-the-dice RPGs - be it via a forum or face to face with people crowding my living room. I've also been launching multiple attempts at creating my own systems and universes, of which 1899 is a tangible result. Ish. Currently I'm working on a new pen&paper system, aiming for an effective set of rules that remains as lean as possible. I know enough people willing to help me on this part, and I have faith in succeeding (finally).

What I am in need of though, is a setting to accompany it. A lot has been done before, to varying degrees of success, and I would of course be very proud if I could devise a setting that stands out from the crowd, should 'unique' be too high a goal. It will probably amount to borrowing elements from different stories, books, settings, even movies, but that's not something I'm averse to - you need to get inspiration out of something, after all.

With a lot of people playing a lot of different games and enjoying a lot of different books and movies visiting this forum, I'd thought to launch a little topic and see what you can come up with. Anything goes. Fantasy? Sure. Sci-fi? Count me in. However, I think in the end the golden goose will be the setting that unexpectedly combines elements from different themes. The Dark Tower springs to mind (post-apocalyptic western chivalry), as do Neverwhere and Fallen London (dark victorian hidden worlds), Discworld (satirical fantasy) and the steam punk genre in general. Undoubtedly many more examples can be found. I even remember someone suggesting Knights In Space prior to me launching 1899.

Give me your best shots. If you were (ever) to partake in a game of RPG which emphasizes characters, story and setting, what scene would you be most interested in? What unlikely combinations float your boat? Or if you dislike RPGs, what stories, be they movies or books, have really triggered your imagination?

Many thanks in advance for your input. As soon as I have something worth playing, I'll definitely be sharing it through this forum.

Alright, who's been mucking about with the forum lay-out? Fess up, now...

Was trying to earn Quartermaster Gold (and Silver and Bronze), turns out MSh isn't such a surefire way of killing spidey as it was in 0996. Anyway, this is what happened after she killed me and I hit the enter key:

Haven't beaten/faced spidey on Win8 previously, so I don't know whether it's a problem with the OS or with the challenge (which I loathed - and thus didn't play - before I set my sights on Qm Gold, and loathe even more now that I know what I know).

Having discovered on my previous run how easy HMP turns out to be with a number of UV games under my belt, I've started making a wishlist for the Gold and Plat badges to take me to the rank of Lt. Colonel. On my quest for Lightfoot Gold I actually stumbled upon Azrael's Scythe, and realized Scavenger Platinum was well within reach too:

--------------------------------------------------------------

Trying to get the Scythe in itself caused me to have to go through a couple of hairy situations - an early demon cave and a level second half of Phobos in which I had to storm through both lava and acid to take care of what was on the other side - but as always things stabilized nicely once MVm was added to my trait list. Once I knew I had Scavenger Platinum down, I decided to dive into the Mortuary - or, as it turned out, Limbo - as well, not caring whether I'd win or lose anymore, but with my traits plus the nuclear BFG there was little challenge to it. I then decided to just go for the standard victory, as I didn't plan ahead past the Vaults and as such didn't bring any envirosuits or comparable measures. Then this happened:

And yes, those red stairs lead to the Lava Pits. I broke into a short sweat on Hell 7 when I realized I didn't have a nuke, but then I was reminded of the NBFG's additional capabilities and stormed straight through everything and came out well on top.

I guess HMP is the new HNTR for me - never thought I'd get this far when I started playing two years ago :)

Discussion / Item counts and Armorer badges
« on: April 27, 2014, 02:08 »
I just terminated a game of AAo666 shortly before level 300 because... well, it's AAo666. I'd achieved my main goal (Technician Diamond) and my secondaries (overall kill-count and Cyberdemon kills specifically) were doing fine. Since I was also curious as to how I was progressing towards Armorer Platinum I took note of the total number of specials I'd found so far: 330. Finding a special about once every three levels (not even counting the special mods I got from Scavenger), I figured I was doing pretty well. Then after the game I checked again: 363.

What. The. Hell.

I nearly found 33 three sets of phaseshift boots alone. I exaggerate of course, but I defnitely found more that 33 exotics/uniques. The only thing I can think of is that I've only managed to find 33 different exotics/uniques on this run, which could be true.

For Armorer Platinum, though, this makes no sense: why would finding a combat pistol on 2 different games count as '2 found', and finding six of them in a single game count only as '1 found'? Is this purposely done, or is it simply a shortcoming of the code that keeps track of item counts?

And while we're at it: in 0997, Armorer Platinum is (debatebly) much easier to get than Armorer Gold, since only encountering the DS isn't enough to have it count as 'found' anymore (like it was in 0996). It just takes a boatload of time - especially with the "broken" counting mechanism.

I'd say a little tweaking on these achievements for the next version would be in order.

Discussion / Mod me, baby!
« on: April 11, 2014, 13:45 »
(On the rare occasions that I pick up play) I play a lot of games in which Whizkid isn't too high on my priority list, leaving me restricted to basic assemblies or single mod applications. That's not really a problem, but it kinda bugs me that this generally results in me not knowing what to do with the mods I find. Here's a couple of things that I always go for:

  • Tac boots: can't go wrong with those. Since tanking isn't a viable option, a little extra speed is always good.
  • P-modded blue/red armor: for those occasions you just know are going to cause you grief.
  • B-modded blue/red armor: for those occasions you just know are going to cause you prolonged grief.
  • Tac shotgun: unless I have a challenge that prevents me from using shotguns, I still very much like using them, and the tactical variant is a true blessing.

Then there's the Gatling Gun for rapidfire builds of course, and the Elephant gun for shotgun builds (I tend to go for WK1 and the storm bolter on pistol builds), but here's the thing: I'm counting a lot of B-mods here, and even more P-mods and preciously little else. Especially on the AoSh I'm attempting at the moment, I just can't never find enough P-mods.
Sylph taught me it's always good to have a nanofiber red on hand in case all else fails, but this takes even more B and P mods ;(

So the obvious challenge-related choices (ie basic weapon assemblies for the corresponding Angels) aside, what do you tend to do with your mod packs if you're not saving them for advanced/master assemblies?

Post Mortem / [M|AoI|YAAM] Getting back in action - again
« on: April 08, 2014, 07:14 »
As for the rest, yeah, it's been surprisingly quiet lately!  Is anyone even playing DoomRL lately?  :|

Inspired by Tormuse's  not exactly inspirational words, I decided to dust of DoomRL again and tried getting back into action. After a number of lousy runs (Ao100 MSc - killed stepping into a puddle of lava on my way to the invul globe that was going to save me // AoI Scout: got splattered by an Arena Master that JUST.WOULDN'T.DIE. // AoI Scout - picked Brute instead of SoB, thereby fucking over my chances of the MCe I was aiming for) and
I decided my next victory would indeed be the elusive Angel of Impatience. The third time - right after the two abovementioned fails - was once again a charm:

I had tried this challenge on a lot of previous occasions, too, but never even got to the Anomaly before this run. Unsure which builds I did previously, but of course Cateye served its purpose beautifully. Managed to do a lot of levels with low/no damage, but unfortunately my streak remained at 48 - on level 23, 46 kills and counting, I was deposited between arachnotrons on the left, and two arch-viles with mancubus support on the right, and no spot to take a good position. Or maybe there was, in hindsight, and I just couldn't be arsed running further.

Finally crossed the 25K kill mark - also first ever Arch-Vile rank - and now only 2 Bronze short of the full set (Hunter and Quartermaster). Tempting as it is to go for these two, I really dislike both challenges, so instead I think I'm going to switch back to UV standard again, try to improve my skills. And how knows, maybe I can squeeze out a Shottyman, Marksman or Lightfoot Gold sometime soon...

Off Topic / I.M. Selim Lemouchi
« on: March 13, 2014, 13:29 »
In the night of Tuesday March 4th 2014 Selim Lemouchi, up until its disbandment end of last year the guitarist and writer for The Devil's Blood, passed away. I saw a couple of news items pass by on Facebook, shared by some of my friends, and wondered what the fuss was about. Selim turns out to have been a local musician who's been in a ton of bands, all in the rock/metal/punk scene. I didn't know him personally, but I encountered him a couple of times - years ago already - in the company of mutual friends. I now wish I had taken the chance to get to know him better. He wasn't just a very talented musician, he was one of those people who, the instant you first see them and hear them talk, strikes you as... well just plain awesome. He was friendly, respectful and funny, and now, posthumously, the more I see and read about him, the more I feel he and I had a shitload of stuff in common.

And even though it's safe to say I actually didn't know him at all, his death has struck me deeply. More so because - although nothing has been confirmed as of yet - the chances that he died by his own hand are pretty high. The feelings it evokes defy description. For such a beautiful person to see no other way to continue than this...

I can only hope he got what he wanted.

Since I respect you people as a community very much, and since I know there's a fair share of metalheads among you who might have heard this news as well, I wanted to share the impact of this story with you. Instead of sitting around moping I channeled the energy his death awakened in me into a song, serving both to pay my respects to a kindred spirit and to deal with the grief I was stricken by ever since I realized the full extent of the news I dismissed so casually at first glance.

This is Unturned. I hope at some time it can offer you the same solace I expect to find in it.

Thank you for reading.

Yes! Apart from still having to learn how to play without INT2, I've finally managed to surpass myself and struck gold - Veteran and UAC. This game took me about two weeks real time; I so much wanted this to work that I only went at it when I was feeling good about it and was free from distractions. The two and a half hours in-game seem neither particularly long nor short to me.

I still only took on the special levels I felt comfortable doing, which resulted in only the Arena and the Military Base. Since I was on a masterless rapidfire build (thanks again MaiZure) and ditched my shotgun pretty early on, I skipped the City of Skulls, which I would have probably done otherwise. I almost made the mistake of leaving Hell 1 via the UC stairs - the others were behind a patch of lava - but realized this would put YAAM firmly and definitely out of reach just in time. I ran out of cells on Hell 7, and was down to only a 1 or 2 stacks of bullets, but luckily I ran into a Vile with a band of captains which I could farm for just a little extra. Eventually, I decided not to take my chances with Spidey and just nuke the hell out of her.

I also followed up on Sylph's earlier advice and descended nearly every set of stairs wearing the (P-modded) red and wielding the rocket launcher. Mostly it didn't matter too much, and in a couple of situations I was forced to swap equipment really quickly (a cell level with barons/viles coming from both sides), but on several levels this turned out to be a great help. I walked into an arena level and rocket-jumped my way from one group of enemies to the other a couple of times. Weeeeeeeeee!

And now I'm leaving my previous highest rank behind, having made Major. And with 23939 total kills, it won't be long until the Hell Baron title will be replaced too...

P.S. This is the third game for which the RNG decided to grant me the name Total Biscuit, and each of his runs have been memorable so far. Shame I didn't plan on having any more kids, otherwise...

Requests For Features / Gameplay and Background Ideas
« on: December 02, 2013, 12:10 »
Though, while I'm on a rant here, lemme rattle off an idea (greatly inspired/stolen from an Android game called Hoplite) which would make melee fights (if those would be a thing in Jupiter Hell) more interesting: make melee attacking/defending based on the last move action the character took. Moving toward the target would be full offense. Moving away would be full defense. Moving along side would be some offense, greater chance to dodge. Standing in place would be balanced. Every time you end a move in a space adjacent to an enemy, you automatically make a melee attack (if you have a melee weapon/fists). For multiple enemies, you would be prompted to choose which. So if you moved between two enemies to reach a third, you could do a full attack on that one, while having a greater chance to dodge the sides. Or you could back away from one enemy to attack another. This would take some balancing, of course, and would probably be better in a melee-oriented game than a shooter, since it would be significantly more noticeable there.

And this, Thiebs, is how it's done :)

If the stuff you've been seeing and hearing about Jupiter Hell so far leaves you inspired in any way, feel free to share any spark on this thread. Whether it's about items, monsters, systems, levels, bits of story, just let it all out. If, like Thiebs above, you have clearly gotten your inspiration from another game/story/movie/etc, please state which.

Any idea goes, even it's in the vein of DoomRL's Horrible Ideas Thread.

Since this is probably intended, I'm not going to log a bug for it, but still: look at the list above. Earning Speedrunner Bronze through Gold in one run seems fair to me. Earning both Icarus and Compet-n medals in the same run is technically exactly to be expected, yet it's impossible to earn more than one UAC Star. Why?
