I made a nano-shrapnel super shotgun, but it was empty when I made it. As a result, I am unable to fire it with the right mouse button. But pressing f and clicking the left mouse button as a confirmation fires just fine. Attempting to fire via right mouse button has the game shouting at me that this weapon doesn't need to be reloaded.

Presumably, a way to prevent this from happening is to have the weapon loaded before assembly, but I was out of ammo. Figures, right? And it's probably not exclusive to nano-shrapnel, and probably occurs when one makes an applicable, but empty weapon with nanomanufacture ammo.

Alright, I told myself that I was going to take a break from DoomRL after that timesink of an ArchAo666. But all day today, I had an irresistible craving for some more DoomRL. Like something I still had to do. But more like it was something I really wanted to do but instead went to do ArchAo666 instead.

Basically, I played two games in a row. The first was a normal clear on AoD + AoLT. Nothing terribly special. But this one, I feel accomplished with. Arena damageless, Armory damageless, and Tower of Babel damageless, all without an invulnerability. Just good ol' dodging. And an unexpected Untouchable Badge at the end of it all. If I brought more rockets with me I probably could have pulled off a Mastermind's Brain, but that's some wishful thinking right there.

Armory gave me an O mod and a N mod, of which I put on the red armor I got from Phobos Anomaly, and later on the game was nice enough to hand me a P mod. That finished off the basic assemblies for me. Though powered red armor is a pretty sweet assembly--maybe I'll even make it more often.

I should use Cateye more. Sure, it might be the rapid-fire mastery for Scouts, but I find it useful for just about any situation. Extra vision is useful for a lot of things.

...So where do I even start with this?
I guess I'll talk about how I originally sought to get Technician Gold/Platinum/Diamond from this. After making my nanoskin phaseshift armor, I quickly realized that I mucked up any chance of doing that. I ended up missing one assembly from each tier, but after this run, those three assemblies are the only assemblies I'm missing. Maybe I'll stick to finding schematics for those, or maybe I'll make them myself. Who knows. It's hard to tell with this RNG.

Let's start with my gear.
Nanoskin phaseshift armor and antigrav phaseshift boots, both with an additional A-mod, as well as three points into Hellrunner, gave me a move speed of 0.13s/move.
Five points into Son of a Gun capped my pistol attack speed at 0.1s/shot. The two points into Finesse didn't do much for the attack speed for my other attacks, but really, I didn't need to attack with anything else aside from an energy blaster and a GCB.

So what about this other "garbage" that I apparently did not need to use but still took up nearly half my inventory? Well...

Plasma shotgun with B3N1: Forgot that the nanomanufacture ammo specifically states that it is incompatible with shotguns and BFGs. Oh well. Still nice to have something that can gib corpses over the course of a shotgun spread. I got this rather late in the run, just for giggles.

Nanomachic missile launcher: In retrospect, I would have made a nanomachic napalm launcher. Not like lava hurts me what with the phaseshift set bonus. But the self-regeneration missile launcher was mostly for early corpse disposal.

3 miniguns with B3 mods: Ammo storage. Because seriously, 439 bullets per minigun. That's almost two ammo chains, and might as well be four full 10mm stacks.

Demolition minigun with a B mod: Well, I didn't have the demolition ammo assembly so...Why not? Also more ammo storage.

Biggest fucking nuclear gun: Don't need a reason for this one. Well...I have one anyway. Taking down an agony elemental or a horde of mancubi/nightmare arachnotrons when there are nightmare viles in the same cluster gets annoying fast.

Trigun: I knew I was bound to find this eventually. I managed to keep myself from using it until the very end of the run.

My ArchAo666 run ended specifically because of Angel Arm. Yes, I committed a "stupid suicide". But that's because I spawned in a maze surrounded by arachnotrons and barons and other nasty things...when my max HP was only 10. The game literally did not let me Angel Arm anymore. So I stared at the wall closest to me and shot a rocket at close range. Run over. Freedom. Sweet, sweet freedom.

And now, traits.
In retrospect, Scavenger probably would not have hurt my DPS that much, since going pistols for the entirety of an ArchAo666 is dumb. Scavenger probably would have helped me complete my master assemblies about 200 floors earlier. I was really, really surprised that I was able to find all the F-mods and N-mods that I needed, since all of them spawned naturally. Only the last F-mod I needed for my biggest fucking (nuclear) gun spawned in a vault, but really now--by the time I finished the darn thing on floor 465, it's not much of a surprise anymore, but instead just a "oh look the RNG decided to be nice for a change".

I don't really know what master trait (or any trait build, for that matter) would keep me thoroughly entertained throughout the course of ArchAo666. The description, it does not lie. This mode is a mindless grind.

Other things of miscellaneous note
- With my A-modded phaseshift set and a berserk pack, I managed to get 0.09s/move, which led to some interesting graphical clipping when I moved.

- I found the Dragonslayer this run (as well as a Berserker Armor that I kept for the majority of the game until I found the Dragonslayer. Mucked around with it for...maybe five minutes? Then I headed for the next floor. Hehe.

Alright, now that I'm free from ArchAo666, I can do something more fun and more feasible! Like UV Ao100 playing add's elevator mod

Edit: Just remembered something. Around the time I stopped caring to progress any further, I remember that I had taken about...7.2k damage. I wasn't deliberately trying to take damage, and there were times when I got incredibly sloppy, even dropping down to 18% from constant revenant fire (and this was before the Angel Arm-ing). But even after that, with less than 200 floors left to go, unless I came across a Cyberdemon floor or something, I doubt that I would have taken enough damage to obtain an Iron Skull. And yes, I'm aware that Ao100/ArchAo666 bar players from obtaining an Iron Skull medal. But just putting things into perspective.

The 0.9.9.7 look of the victories page looks super-cluttered. Would it be possible to spruce it up?
I was thinking of something that resembled the traits screen, where you have the name of the trait and the description of it, but instead, you could highlight a mode or a challenge, and on the right, have the description of said mode, then the highest floor reached/number of wins (partial/normal/full) separated by difficulty.

I think after my AoMr + Ao100 run, I've grown fond of pistols.
Specifically, Sharpshooter. Unforuntately, I didn't have anything interesting to make, and I built a speedloader rather early on. I didn't really notice what mods I had in the beginning, and the thought of using the mods to make anything didn't come to mind either. I think I had already descended into Phobos-2 before I realized that I started with two T-mods, so having an early speedloader was out of the question.

Barring a few instances, this run was fairly uneventful...though there were certainly a lot more levels with a ton of barrels. One of them had to be a mancubus-only floor, too...Military Base was generous with 10mm ammo chains, and at one point I had five of them in my inventory at one time. Speedloaders with an ammo chain seem kinda excessive, but I don't mind it one bit.

Deimos Lab was nice with the ammo chains too. And speaking of Deimos Labs, the double shamblers! I think I've found a mostly flawless plan of attack on the double shamblers, and that is: release the shamblers, run to the double supercharges (assuming you didn't use them already), wait for the shamblers to teleport near you, and fight. Use the supercharges as needed. Deimos Lab gave me not one, but TWO onyx armors. O-modded Duelist Armor is kinda funny, and OP-modded Duelist Armor is also kinda amusing.

Cyberdemon gave me a LOT of grief. I burned through all my heals and, if I didn't O-mod my Duelist Armor, I probably would have died at Cyberdemon. I think as a rule of thumb, I should enter the Cybie battle with at least one point into Hellrunner for some dodge, since someone removed the dodge chance from tactical boots for 0.9.9.7.

Hell was uninteresting, from what I remember. Lava Pits was a bad mistake. I think I took over 200 damage on Lava Pits. It was a huge and unnecessary risk, and nothing exotic/unique even spawned. It was all normal armors. Had I not made environmental plasteel boots, I would have easily melted in the lava, due to long periods of time spent standing on lava while sniping revenants from a distance. Even then, there were a few times when I stepped in lava in tactical boots. Not fun. :(

I remember going into Lava Pits specifically for the Lava Elemental, as I had a thermo in my inventory from earlier. But as I was getting ready to descend into Dis, I decided to opt out of getting a full win, since I wasn't entirely sure if I could take on JC. If I had a decent weapon, I might have at least attempt the full win.

First standard win on Ultra-Violence, and also, unintentional platinum! Not the same platinum I got from 0.9.9.6--that one was for getting all the advanced assemblies. This is kinda nice. The run lasted as long as it did because I walked away a few times to take a break (didn't feel like saving), and I was distracted a few times. And I was being a bit cautious at times.

This run was mostly experimentation and generally derping around.
Mostly wanted to see what worthwhile pistol builds were good for just AoMr. Made a storm bolter because 10mm ammo is fairly frequently dropped (especially in crowds of former humans with viles--10mm ammo for days). There were an abundance of arachnotrons throughout this run (and I even made a VBFG at one point) so I guess I could have made an energy gun. I toyed with the idea of making demolition ammo, but then the Blaster appeared, and then a Blaster+B3P2 happened.

For some reason I completely forgot that I could have possibly made a potentially useful assembly out of the Blaster with the abundance of mods that I had, but instead I chose to throw every B and P mod I had on hand until I couldn't fit any more mods onto the thing.

About the run itself, though...
Not much to say about my trait build. Rushed Sharpshooter, got two levels into Whizkid (A-modded tactical armor, hehe), two levels into Intuition, and then more DPS, more speed, more utility. This run got noticeably easier around the time I assembled my storm bolter combat pistol, and I was fortunate to have found several hordes of former captains hanging around the viles, on several floors. I quite like having to fight bosses at the end of the run. Today I learned that the Lava Elemental makes a noise when it dies.

Having enviroboots meant I could be a complete jerkwad and cornershoot while standing on lava. Highly amusing, vastly hilarious. (Until I derped up and took a Mancubus rocket to the face.)

And now let's talk about the items.
If I wasn't playing AoMr + Ao100, I might have been able to derp around even more. I guess having AoMr paired with Ao100 actually saved me from doing something potentially dangerous, especially since I nearly died a few times after 50. Would have loved using the new weapons I found in this run. Actually, it would have been nice to have used any of the two nuclear plasma rifles, any of the four napalm launchers, the Acid Spitter, any of the two assault shotguns...the BFG...
And just for kicks, at one point I had a minigun+B3.

Oh, and Berserker Armor. That was amusing. Didn't come across the Dragonslayer. I don't know what my reaction would have been if I came across it.

I saved at around 36F to take a break, and then I came back and powered through the rest of Ao100. To the best of my memory I have cleared Ao100 twice--the first time was on 0.9.9.6 on HNTR and that took me about five hours over the course of four different sittings. So, not bad.

I was sure that this would have filled up my Hell Baron kill quota, but when I finished I was still of Hell Knight rank. Still need another 48 Baron kills.

Question, though.
While having maximum fire resist from both parts of the Inquisitor set equipped, I took a Cyberdemon rocket to the face. Of course, I took no damage, but my kill streak was reset. How does the game determine when to reset my kill streak, aside from just taking damage from damage floors or enemy attacks? It seems strange that the kill streak reset itself even though I took zero damage from an attack.

This is just something I thought over the course of a few days and decided to share. Don't take this too seriously, now.

What if DoomRL had dynamic difficulty? By that I mean, what if the difficulty automatically increased/decreased itself when certain things happened?
There could still be a base difficulty setting (ITYTD/HNTR/HMP/UV/N!), but dynamic rank could make the run even harder, for those seeking a challenge for a specific type of playstyle. Yeah, you could limit yourself with just a certain type of weapon through Angel of...whatever, but dynamic rank can gradually tweak the difficulty such that what used to be easy, turn into an unexpected hurdle that can catch players by surprise. Imagine playing a standard game on HNTR, entering a floor on Deimos where the floor is replaced with all former humans of all varieties. But with dynamic rank, the spawn pool could eliminate any spawns of former privates and replace them with sergeants, or thin out the number of former humans and add some former commandos into the mix, or for players who have unusually high rank at that point, spawn in some former elites.

A short list of what dynamic rank could potentially do

1. Rank raises when:
- Doomguy directly kills an enemy
- Doomguy's kill streak increases
- Time passes
   * By that I mean, every few minutes or so, the dynamic rank increases a little bit. For example, every 5 minutes on a standard run at ITYTD difficulty on Phobos, the rank increases a notch. On Deimos on the same difficulty, rank increases every 4 minutes. On Phobos for a standard HNTR run, rank increases every 4 minutes, or a little less.

2. Rank lowers when:
- Doomguy's health enters the red region--when you are mortally wounded or almost dead. Reward the player for living life on the edge, so to speak. Spending
more time while having lower health could lower the dynamic rank a little bit at a time, but spending too much time will also increase the rank back up again.

3. What rank does:
- Affects what enemies spawn (higher rank = tougher monsters earlier)
- Affects enemies' stats (higher rank = higher hp, damage, ac, etc)
- Rank is invisible and has no numeric representation
- Difficulty changes upon entering next floor
- Increased AI pathfinding to player and items for formers/knights/barons; maybe formers/knights spawn closer to armors

- Increase base exp as difficulty increases?

If it all sounds convoluted at the moment, it's because this is all something I thought of on the fly.

This was supposed to be "generic AoSh YAVP #9001". But let's start from the top, since there were a couple amusing points in this run.

1. Chained Court+

I normally have a huge problem with ammo conservation in AoSh runs. I also usually have a problem with Arena Master in AoSh, but on this particular run I let the Arena Master do its thing and resurrect sergeants for more ammo. Left with an inventory of a green armor, a blue armor, some mods, and full shells for whatever space I had left over.

2. Deimos Lab

There's been a few posts on the forums after 0.9.9.7's been released regarding the double Shamblers.
My two cents: F@!& the double shamblers.

3. Abyssal Plains

Deimos Lab was nice for a change and gave me a sniper mod, which I immediately placed on my double shotty.
The hell knights at the Plains gladly melted whatever armor I had with me and forced me to use the heals I had too.
After everything was cleared out, I entered the middle zone of the plains and faced the Agony Elemental. With the S-modded double shotgun, it was a free UAC gold cluster.

4. Vaults

Did HMP Vaults always have mancubi/revenants? I think I rather prefer this combination over Hell Knights/Barons, when they can run around with gothic armors and never die. At the same time, I can't imagine clearing the Vaults on AoB and still have anything survive the ICBM shit-storm afterward. But that's implying I even get the staff on AoB in the first place.

5. Limbo

Entered Limbo with two phase devices and a blood skull, figured I give Limbo a shot. I think some people have been tweaking Limbo compared to the 0.9.9.7 beta days. It was a lot different compared to what I remember about it. I'll let the screencap speak for itself. My Doomguy's suffering ended after using both the phase devices I had--the first warped me 10 feet away, and the second took me out to a lava island, at which point some nightmare cacodemons chased me down, but they died the same death that killed Cyberdemon--more on that in a moment. Used my blood skull and went up to 200%, but that did no good for me since I was being stupid at the time and shot into the dark with my tactical shotty in an attempt to take down the viles from a distance. I didn't attempt to cross the lava until the health decay had stopped. Dumb. Tried to cross the lava and died.

...No, don't ask me why I thought to enter Limbo with what I had when I didn't think of entering with a decent Malicious Blades setup.

6. Things of lesser note

- a. Cyberdemon's Head: Cybie fires rocket, I dodge, I shoot with plasmatic shrapnel double shotgun, Cybie reloads rocket launcher, Cybie fires rocket, I dodge, rinse and repeat. Wasn't invulnerable at all.

- b. Post-Fireangel build: I put two points into Finesse and a point into Ironman, but in retrospect I probably should have invested into Badass instead. Had I put a point into Badass, I probably could have survived a little longer at Limbo, but you can't counter player stupidity with traits.

- c. B2 Plasma Rifle and B2 BFG9000? Don't mind that. I thought I would have used the plasmatic shrapnel double shotty a lot more than I did. It didn't happen.

First victory for 0.9.9.7. Could have gotten Fallout Gold if I had remembered to put down one of my three nukes on Hell-7. Learned a couple things during the course of this run, such as how amusing Malicious Blades is. Ripper is inconvenient at times, with a troublesome -4 accuracy that I have to cope with. Decided to chicken out on a good number of special stages--in particular, Arena has always been a questionable choice for my AoB runs (also on Marksmanship runs). Initially I was a little upset that, by skipping out on Arena, I had already messed up a 100% kill rate run, but as I entered the Chained Court, I remembered the new 0.9.9.7 layout!

The other stages I skipped out on were: Halls of Carnage, Containment Area, Vaults, Limbo, and Lava Pits. Agony Elemental left me with 2 fire skulls and 1 hatred skull, and I had used the hatred skull at Unholy Cathedral like I normally do. Not having a berserk that I can proc from hitting things makes me uneasy to attempt UC without a hatred skull. Not having a hatred skull for Limbo made Angelic Armor not very appealing, but with two Medical Armors and a fireproof red armor for mancubi, viles and revenants, I decided to opt out of Limbo.

I skipped Lava Pits because...accident. I missed the red stairs. But even then I probably would have skipped it. Never liked attempting to get a lava element on AoB runs.

Overall quite pleased with how this run turned out.

Two questions:

1. Where is the Spider's Lair in all of this now?
2. Have bruiser brothers always been part of the "you hear a battle cry" level feeling?

I can't figure out if I favor speed or power in some of these challenges. Before I attempted this run, I was mostly aiming for Gun Kata, but I always died before I got Dodgemaster. I've heard great things about Sharpshooter, and maybe if/when I attempt UV AoMr I'll try that out, but building Bullet Dance seemed like a good idea at the time. Judging by how this turned out, I can't say that Bullet Dance was a bad choice. Having the combat pistol show up when it did helped though.

I had enough mods to dual-wield storm bolters, but then I found a combat pistol and I wasn't able to find another T mod. Wasn't too sure if I should have opted for the high power combat pistol instead of a B1P1 combat pistol. With my build I was able to go through the arch-vile only floor on floor 19 without taking a hit, so that was neat.

The 9 enemies that I missed were:
- the bruiser brothers at the anomaly
- 7 enemies on floor 15 with a primed nuke, had three minutes left and I didn't want to risk getting melted from the nuke that I didn't place, so I made a beeline for the stairs

And then I found a Trigun. And then there were two invulernability globes really close to one another. And I also had two homing phase devices with me. So I put the Trigun to good use. Almost feels like cheating, using that Trigun for that purpose.

As a small aside, I passed my 10 day mark on DoomRL. :whoo:

Some decent weapons probably would have helped too. I found a jackhammer on this run but didn't feel inclined enough to make use of it.
I made good use of a rocket launcher I found fairly early on though. I also found a napalm launcher in this run, briefly contemplated using it, but came to the conclusion that it would have made more of a hassle for myself in the long run. I've used the napalm launcher in Mortuary runs and I would always end up getting knocked into a pool of lava that I made. >_>;;

I made a few silly mistakes during my battle with the spider mastermind, including firing at the spot I originally intended moving toward.
With the BFG.
So any cover I originally planned to move toward was no longer there.
Next best thing: overloading a nuclear plasma rifle for a partial win :)

The mortem doesn't show it but I felt that there were more caves than usual--2 caco caves in Deimos and 2-3 arach caves in Hell.
I didn't mind it that much--with cave stages, typically the exit stairs are in your immediate view, even on Angel of Darkness.

And then I decided to try for Lightfoot Gold with a Blademaster build with a side of shotgun because, I love shotguns. ;)

Skipped Arena because I wanted an easy access to Chainsaw. Even if it meant walking through lava lakes to kill some more enemies. Initially I wasn't concerned about getting 100% kill rate because the requirements for Lightfoot Gold is to simply clear Angel of Light Travel on HMP. It didn't require a minimum kill rate, it didn't require a full win, just...clear AoLT.

Skipped the Wall on purpose, passed up Hell's Armory and then regretted it a floor later, left Halls of Carnage alone for some reason, and skipped City of Skulls because I didn't have Blademaster yet. If I had Blademaster I definitely would have attempted it. Probably would have came out with a few more skulls that I didn't need, and a BFG I knew I wouldn't have the room to carry. I think I typically pass up BFG if I don't have a backpack to have extra copious amounts of ammo, since that thing eats up ammo reaaaally quickly.

Ignored Spider's Lair, and then Cyberdemon. Painless.
And then...Unholy Cathedral. It had occurred to me that I had 100% kill rate when I reached the floor with Unholy Cathedral, and I had a spare hatred skull so I figured, "why not? I can probably beat the Angel of Death and walk away with an Azrael's Scythe". And oh yes, I definitely won.

The following words echoed in my mind as I left Unholy Cathedral with the scythe.
"I don't need to go out of my way to kill everything. I just need to get to Spider Mastermind and kill that, and I'll have my 11th Gold."

So from Hell-2 to Hell-7, I made a mad dash for the stairs. Occasionally I took out my tactical shotgun and gunned some enemies down, but other than that, the stairs were the only priority. Everything was fine and dandy until Hell-7. Between me and the stairs were some viles and a mancubus. I narrowly escaped into Dis with 22%. I thought, "all right, I made it. I can do this. I'll have another Gold in my record in a few minutes.

But I need to heal."

As an aside, I think this is probably the 3rd or 4th time I've played a round of Angel of Light Travel and found a Minigun. trollololol.

I should have been studying. I decided to play Ao100 instead.
I've completed Ao100 on HNTR once and that took 5 hours, over the course of about 4 sittings.
And then there have been probably 30 other failed attempts on Ao100 on HNTR, HMP, and UV.

It's still a fun mode, though. Like it a lot.

Anyway. This YASD came about me trying to avoid 2 viles and then me going into a door and finding myself standing right in front of a revenant. Here's where my brain had a bit of a "durr hurr" moment.

Now, I clearly saw that there was a barrel behind the revenant.
But I didn't want to knock back the revenant with the shotty, so I switched to my burst cannon. <-- Love this assembly. Love it. Not sure if there are better ones.

Bet you can't guess what happened afterward.

Also I'm not sure why I chose to build toward Badass. I know that I wanted to get it at some point down the line but in retrospect I would have put a point in either HR or Reloader.

(alternate title: Yet another scrub roguelike player enters the fray.)

I've been playing this version of DoomRL (actually, the only version of DoomRL that I've ever played...I'm a late bloomer.) for the last five months, with varying activity. I really like DoomRL, but man, does it irk me when I die because I don't know how to deal with commandos and arachnotrons in the early-game. Guess that just comes with experience. Though I've noticed that it's definitely easier to deal with such things with a rapid-fire weapon than the Army of the Dead + Melee build that I am desperately trying to detach from.

This run was a spur-of-the-moment attempt after one restart due to the sporadic nature of the former humans that meander around base entry...
As stated in the previous paragraph I'm trying to quit my addiction to the Army of the Dead build that I normally use for...whenever I can, actually. So this time I considered a Sharpshooter build, but then quickly opted for a masterless build. Entrenchment might have been a good idea, but I have severe ammo management issues...Maybe I should try an Ammochain build first before I try Entrenchment? Anyways.

Phobos was, for the most part, quick and painless. I wimped out on attempting the Wall, and later I was wishing that I had at least tried to clear it for that wonderful backpack. Even if I had escaped with a few kills, that would have meant a little more experience and some free inventory slots. But oh well.

I feel that this run could have been better if not for three key mistakes, as follows:

Mistake #1: I decided to attempt City of Skulls in hopes of getting a hatred skull or a blood skull. I practically rely on those to clear the Mortuary. I ended up clearing City of Skulls with minimal difficulty and medpacks, but I had a hilarious brain lapse where the agony elemental died right next to me, dropped its skulls, and spawned its pain elemental and lost souls, and then for some reason I decided to use a shockwave pack. It destroyed the skulls that dropped from the agony elemental, and I was scratching my head and wondering, why did I do that.

Mistake #2: I assembled a fire-proof red armor sometime before fighting the Cyberdemon. If I can get the mods, I always do so. Though in this run I learned that dodging Cyberdemon's shots is actually pretty easy and doable with just a suit of tactical armor. Might have been just my luck, though. But anyway. While clearing out inventory I inadvertently tossed my fire-proof red armor somewhere and was not aware of it until I was getting ready to enter the Mortuary.

Mistake #3: Entering the Mortuary has always been a bad idea for me. When the level started, I thought that I was really lucky, as two viles started in plain view from my starting position. Not wasting any time, I gunned both of them down with my burst plasma rifle. And then I wandered around, hoping to find the other viles quickly before they could resurrect the dead army of the Mortuary, but of course, I was too slow. And of course, I ran out of ammo. It just wouldn't be a YASD for me if I don't run out of ammo at least once or twice. I think what I need to learn is how to gib corpses that aren't next to the wall.

The Mortuary really has a strange sensation to it--that desperate feeling one gets when one runs out of ammo and is frantically scrounging for ammo in the corpses. 
If there was a counter that showed how many times you've died to a particular monster, the arachnotron would most likely be at the top of the list for me. Stupid things...

This run isn't my best, but it was one I felt like sharing.
