Title: [N!|AoMc|86%|YAVP] Longinus Diamond Badge
Post by: Tormuse on February 08, 2011, 22:16
Hi all!

I've been playing DoomRL for a while now, but the achievement of my first ever Diamond Badge prompted me to come out of lurking.  :D

I killed the Angel of Death the easy way, with lavawalking, but really, by the time I had gotten to him, between the necroarmor, my agility modded boots and 2 HR levels, I was fast enough to walk circles around him.  I probably could have taken him out in straight hand to hand combat just through virtue of my speed.  As it was, I didn't even need to use a single med pack or phase device.

As an added bonus, I was lucky enough to find my first ever Grammaton Cleric Beretta and achieve a Grammaton Cleric Cross Medal too!

32 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 18 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!
Is he immortal? 19 souls claim to have killed him...
4 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
11 killed the bastard and survived.
4 showed that it can outsmart hell itself.

Also, I must say that having a power modded plasma rifle on AoMc with level 3 SoB is fun.  Take down Barons with one round!  (Muahahaha!)

This is an awesome win!  AoMC is a nice mode to go badge hunting since the randomness is reduced muchly.

Also, welcome to the forums!  =D

I'm not completely convinced there is another (reasonable) way. Sure you could keep playing until you find a handful of invulnerability globes right before the Cathedral, but I think lava walking is the only way that doesn't require untold amounts of luck.

Well done though, I bet with a couple more runs you could probably get the Destroyer diamond.

Next version = Smarter AoD that won't walk in lava

However - The berserk bug is fixed so AoD isn't so bad

Probably means if you want to include UC (to get Conqueror Badge, for instance) you're going to have to invest toward Berserker in addition to your other traits. On N! I don't think that's unfair, it's pretty easy to hit level 10 by or on Hellgate (meaning master trait + Ber).  Before, there was little reason NOT to do UC if you had the speed for it: now it involves a some cost-cutting on levelups.

Unless melee get some godly new weapons the diamond may become imposable.

Thanks!  I've been spending an embarrassing amount of time playing this game lately, so it's about time I joined.  :)

I think it's doable if you're fast enough.  My walking speed was high enough that I got an extra move on the AoD for every five or so.  Theoretically, with enough levels in Finesse and maybe tech mods on the chainsaw, (and a lot of patience and timing) I could take out the AoD without him even touching me.

As for Destroyer Diamond...  Every time I play without Iro and TaN, I get killed horribly.  Maybe this is just a sign that I need to adjust my strategy, but I think I'm a long way away from achieving it.  :(

@Tormuse

The possibility of out-speeding AoD is possible in the new version, but the timing of actions will likely make it so that he will still hit you on occasion. AoD speed is 150% the normal rate (1.0s per action), so we're looking at ~0.67s per attack or move. HRx2 + A-modded boots is 0.64s (IIRC) and Finx2 + T-modded chainsaw would be something like 0.58s. (FYI, Fin works with melee now.) If you wanted to pull off a no-damage fight against AoD, you'd have to calculate every action you take from the beginning of map generation and compare it to the AoD's speed, then make sure that whenever you attack, you're not crossing one of those 0.67s points when the AoD can take an action. Frankly, I don't think that's worth the effort.

The best way to go about it is to max out your speed, get a couple points of EE, stock up on large med-packs as much as humanly possible, and go with a particular weapon that I can't name right now because it's a secret. When you get low on HP, run/heal, then go at it again. Because melee speed can be raised through Fin, you'll basically be attacking each other at around 1:1 ratios, which will give you (with good armor) about three hits before you need to run. With five or six med-packs and this weapon I'm thinking of, he should go down without too much of a hitch. Points in Iro would also be useful (because you'll get more breathing room per med-pack). This analysis depends on AoD not being affected by speed increases in N! (he wasn't in 0.9.9.1 but I have yet to test in 0.9.9.2).

Of course, I should be writing about this in my FAQ and not here, but since you brought it up...

Sorry, when I said "a lot of patience and timing," I guess I should have said "a *LOT* of patience and timing."  :)

New version sounds cool; I'll have to download it at some point.  (Just when I thought I was getting over my addiction to this game!)  :P

With finesse now working for melee one should be able to kill this beast.

Game Hunter, AoMC is still preferable, since angel is 1d3 + 15 with massive accurracy, correct?  so there's no worry about his boosts, and you don't need your EE.

Depends on if you think the Lost Souls will be harder that way. Demons can still (probably) be outrun in spite of their boosted speed with HRx2, but Lost Souls are freaking FAST at their N! level. Normally their damage is 2-4, but AoMC will set it to 4 automatically, and it's not unlikely that they get 2 hits to your one, even with Finesse benefits.

But yeah, I'd say AoMC is probably the easiest way to go about it. AoH is also nice because it's a fast way to do it (and guaranteed at floor 8).

For the record, only one of the lost souls successfully hit me and that's because I missed it with my chainsaw.  (2% chance after all)  For each one, I positioned myself so that they finished their moves right in front of me.  Since they only take one hit at AoMC, they never touched me.  (Except for that one guy who took 3% health, which, incidentally, was all the damage I took in the entirety of UC)
