If Hell's Arena is going to be fixed to a dungeon level I'd vote for level 3. Speaking as a fairly new player myself, hell's arena is the place where I first figured out the basics of cornershooting and it's good to let the new player get at least a small trait advantage to help them out as they learn this "advanced" skill. It definitely doesn't need to be a "hard" special level as it is the first one we see in the game. Does it really deserve to be the defining moment of every game of DoomRL? Save the real challenges for later levels. The special levels that the player sees the least often should be the hardest, so that they'll also be the most interesting and memorable - the "climaxes" of the game.

As for the specific case of Angel of Berserk, one little change that would go a long way in making the early game and hell's arena survivable would be to make brute's accuracy bonus also improve the throwing accuracy of combat knives. Right now their accuracy without eagle eye is 50% at point blank and probably 25% at full range. If this was boosted to 91% and 75% by a couple ranks of brute then you could reliably chip away at the health of demons and cacodemons before they reach you and end up saving lots of health in the long run. I don't think this is against the spirit of the challenge as thowing knives are a melee weapon, they have a very limited range and damage potential, and brute already improves the damage of thrown knives anyway.

Another thing that could be clarified is the effect that running has on melee damage. I've often found that I can kill a demon in the same number of turns when I'm running as when I'm not. If melee damage is being penalized in some kind of unintuitive way, why not just remove the penalty entirely?

This isn't the game that should have won, as nothing really went as well as it did in the two YASD's above. I had to give up on 100% kills when I was forced to chicken out of City of Skulls. I had neither the huge health supply of my first game or the speed advantage of my second (with Butcher's Cleaver). I was hoping to regain that speed advantage by making a ripper but I didn't get the whizkid level or the necessary mods in time (no P mods spawned in the entire game). Even after running to the corner of the level so I couldn't be surrounded, and running in place so a few more lost soul attacks would miss, I just didn't have the supplies to endure. That also led me to abandon my ambition to clear the Mortuary as without any skulls my odds weren't great. I skipped the spider's lair this time as there weren't any lucky invulnerability globes near the entrance, and I finally had to chicken out of the lava pits when I ran out of health there too.

This is my first full win but I'm not counting it. The last level of hell had two nukes and an invulnerability sphere next to the downstairs. Firing off both nukes before the powerup ran out was a no-brainer.

One thing that I've gotten out of these Angel of Berserk games, though, is I'm getting better at taking advantage of everything at my disposal. I never thought I'd throw as many combat knives as I have now, and the arena master's staff is actually pretty handy if you remember to use it.

How is demolition ammo for actual combat? It'd probably be slightly better if you could use a combat pistol as a base.

I'll just stick this mortem in this thread because it's basically the same game and ridiculous death all over again. I think the problem is that I'm just not giving acid its proper respect. (Note to self: acid barrels don't do fire damage.) This is an even more tragic loss as I found Butcher's Cleaver honestly just two steps from where I spawned on level 2. That was fun while it lasted.

There isn't really anything special about the mortem. I think I just want to talk about Malicious Blades. It really isn't an offensive trait, is it? I found a load of mods this game and was able to make what I consider to be the ultimate pair of blades: two piercing combat knives (4d6) (B). (You have to add the P mod before the A or else they'll be 4d5.) Even with the doubled brute damage bonus (from having two attacks every turn) my DPS was still the same as when I just used the Longinus spear, and lower than when I used the ripper. The only reason to take MMB right now is for the passive resistances. I think I'd be a lot more excited about Malicious Blades if the trait description read like this:

"Knives, knives, knives! You can now attack with a blade in your off hand at the same time as any other melee attack! You also parry 75% melee damage and deflect 50% bullet and shrapnel damage!"

Powerful? Yes, but other melee masters will still do more raw damage in most cases thanks to their easy access to berserk. Also, note that I'm willing to give up fire resistance for this.

The fact that you can't even unequip nanofiber skin amour (so you have no option of switching to something with better move speed or melee resist) makes it fair, I think. And yeah, I've never seen the energy-shielded vest.

Army of the Dead is like a sub-challenge on top of the Angel of Shotgunnery challenge. I'm used to loading everything with mods and focusing on active defence traits, so it took some lateral thinking to make the most of basic assemblies and passive defence. I think buying berserker was a good move; I didn't know that when you take a big hit with berserker, the berserk resistance kicks in before damage is calculated. Going berserk and taking just one damage when a rocket hits you makes the cyberdemon a joke. The ranks of ironman that I got at the end might actually have been detrimental, since higher max health means berserker kicks in less often.

The first part of the game didn't feel too different than normal, as I always tend to go pretty heavy on the shotguns. Things started to change with chained court - I had to trap the arena master against a wall and chip away at him with a double shotgun while 'zerked. Phobos anomaly went well as I found an invulnerability sphere close to the stairs to it. I got lucky and was able to corner shoot the bruiser brothers without taking damage even after invulnerability wore off.

In Deimos, I left the medical powerarmor where it spawned as I've just never found a good use for it. I mostly used tactical armour and common armours instead. I found an onyx armour pack in the Armory which I saved for lava boots so I'd have more route options in hell levels. I beat Halls of Carnage because I knew it would be easy - same goes for City of Skulls, which spawned a hatred skull. An invulnerability sphere spawned close to the stairs to the Spider's Lair so I decided to tackle that too, though it got scary after the sphere ran out. Luckily, a combat shotgun with MAD does a decent amount of damage even beyond sight range, so I radar-shot my way to victory.

I was foolish enough to enter the mortuary. I used the hatred skull and a fire skull that I got from City of Skulls pretty much right away. Even while 'zerked I burned through every red armour and supercharge in the right half of the level, and when my 'zerk ran out on my way back to the left side I started to worry. Luckily, it seemed that I'd already managed to kill every vile in my all-consuming rage, so I just had to radar- and corner-shoot from the centre structure until everything was properly dead. The damage was done, though - I only had a stack and a half of shells left, which left me on a pretty tight schedule for the rest of the game. For some reason I went into the lava pits anyway, and wasted even more shells killing most monsters from out of sight range. I only had about thirty shells left leaving that level, so I knew that my one chance left was to nuke the last level of hell, wasting a nuke and lava element I was thinking about spending elsewhere, and then spend those last shells on the mastermind. I equipped the shielded armour and lured the mastermind into melee range so I could chip her health away with point-blank double shotgun blasts while she feebly scratched me. She died. The end!

After about a million failed experiments with pistol builds on different challenges and difficulties, I finally won something. The thread title is a crude onomatopoeic rendering of the soundtrack of this run: chipping away at yet another archvile with an energy pistol.

My strategy is to never plan on getting exotics/uniques, but to take advantage of them once they do show up. And man, did they show up. Finding the lava armor on level 20 won the game for me right then and there - it's such an amazing piece of gear that I was able to carelessly tank as much damage as I wanted afterwards. It also helps that I found an onyx armor pack early on. I made a pair of lava boots to help charge my armor, and I ended up wearing them for most of the game. I also made tactical and antigrav boots, but they mostly sat in my pack as it gets annoying having to constantly switch to protective boots in the lava-jammed hell levels.

Even with all the pistol builds I've been playing lately I've still never once unlocked "dualgunner." Sharpshooters all the way! MSs just seems like a better trait to me - it's more accurate, more ammo efficient, and you spend less time reloading. Plus, you get to experiment with oddball pistol assemblies without worrying about whether your pistols match. I started off with a regular T-modded pistol until I was finally able to find enough B mods to turn it into a storm bolter. This is, as far as I know, the best pistol you can get without any exotic drops, and it served me well through most of the game. Once I found a combat pistol I turned it into an energy pistol, so that I'd be able to make good use of more than just one ammo type. This turned out to be very wise as there were occasional dry spells where bullets or cells wouldn't spawn. I found a second combat pistol fairly late in the game and decided to just mod it up. Overall, the P3 combat pistol was stronger than the energy pistol, but it took 3 shots to kill a revenant where the energy pistol only took 2. I was hoping to find a second sniper mod so I could play around with killing viles from across the map but only one ever turned up, not that I can really complain.

For shotguns, I went from a plain shotty to a lightly modded combat shotgun to a heavily modded assault shotgun. I finally dropped the latter when I found the Jackhammer, which I mostly just kept as a souvenir (though I did bust it out in a few nightmare demon caves). For rocket launchers, I went from a plain RL to a lightly modded missile launcher, which I eventually dropped when I had the idea of making a nanomanufacture napalm launcher. I was very happy to find the second nano pack I needed. A nanomachic napalm launcher is definitely one of the more ridiculous things you can assemble in this game, and since I already had lava boots I could blanket entire levels in lava without any real consequence. I also wanted to see if I could make a nuclear biggest fucking gun but no F mods ever spawned (though I easily could have destroyed a few with the aforementioned napalm launcher).

@bullet htting tile it wasn't aimed at - to be honest I saw it a few times myself, in ASCII mode. It's really, really rare and I can't seem to notice any reason why it is happening but it's there. It's actually pretty noticable since the bullet seems to go waaay off the route it should go.

I've also seen this. My impression was that, even though monsters can't dodge, sometimes when a bullet is calculated to miss its target its trajectory is shown on screen as if that monster dodged it (ie. the bullet flies toward the monster's last location instead of its current one).

I've noticed that mancubi are able to fire from out of LOS sometimes. I thought this was a bug.

I think I would like the DoomRL mancubus better if it was easier to dodge its fire completely. It's no fun dodging the centre shot just to take a direct hit from one of the peripheral projectiles. Maybe these outer shots could be fired at a larger angle from centre so that they wouldn't ever hit the player directly but would still cause a lot of chaos. Or, maybe the mancubus could fire only two shots at a time so that the player can dodge them all with a left-right-left movement pattern (like in Doom).

That is also not necessarily true.  If you play in graphics mode and hit the 'f' key to bring up the target selection, move the mouse around your field of view when you're cornershooting.  There are spaces in your vision that enemies can't shoot you from (you'll see the X turn red over those).

So that's what that means! This should probably be mentioned in the manual or somewhere.

Unless you're playing Angel of Marksmanship, what you're doing wrong is not carrying a chaingun and a shotgun or two. Every weapon type has its advantages, and having a "build" doesn't mean you're only allowed to use that one thing.
